[Bug 550910] [NEW] Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-03-29 Thread Brent N.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netbook-launcher

I am using lucid-beta-1, with all updates, on an Acer Aspire One
netbook.

The netbook-launcher fonts have become white blocks after the last
update. Up until that point they looked great.

The blocks are different sizes, according to the character, but not even
close to readable. Each character is just a single white rectangle,
approximately the size of the letter.

(note, I have adjusted my default font size to 8pt, but changing this
back to 10pt only makes the blocks bigger)

[Bug 581926] Re: the cd is not erased

2010-09-02 Thread Brent N.
This issue appears to have coincided with the removal of "unmount" from
the nautilus right-click menu. Could they be related?

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-04-12 Thread Brent N.
The beta2 USB image appears to work fine when I boot from USB.

Therefore it must be something in the local configuration - but what? It is
apparently NOT user-specific, since I created a new user, who had the same
problem.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-04-13 Thread Brent N.
No different languages, but I have changed the theme now and then.

The theme is now Ambient, and the font, sans.

However, since a brand new user also experiences the problem, it has
to be something in the system-wide configuration

Are there launcher settings in gconf-editor that could affect this?

If you look at the screenshot, it's almost as if the letters are
there, but super boldfaced, and perhaps cropped at the letter
boundaries.

No other applications appear to be affected however.

Perhaps this is unrelated, but i'll mention it in case...

I have also noticed that you can't add widgets to the default panel In
the 3d launcher. Works fine inthe 2d, but in the 3d no matter where
you right-click, there is never an "add to panel" option.

I'm not concerned about it however - unless it's related.

Brent :)

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-04-13 Thread Brent N.
New info,

I tried turning off Desktop Effects, and it DID NOT resolve the issue, nor
did it switch to the 2D launcher session. At least everything on the screen
stayed the same. When I choose the 2D session from GDM, all fonts are
readable, but the icons are much bigger, and the toolbar is just the one
from the standard (non-netbook) desktop. Turning off Desktop Effects from
the 3D launcher did not exhibit any of those.

Also remember, the 3D launcher was working beautifully for me until the day
I submitted this ticket. - and it works from a live USB key.

So I don't think it's un-solvable.

Oh, ok, well that's good to know. What did you update FROM? (is there any
way I can roll that part back for myself?)

I'm not sure how to fill a bug upstream and link there.

Wonderful, I will try that.

Are you able to tell me what version of clutter you upgraded from and to on

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-04-11 Thread Brent N.
I tried manually reverting the font size, with no effect.

I cannot use the live session CD as it is a netbook, without a CD drive.
:(

I can confirm that the 2d launcher (when selected from GDM) works fine.
FYI - this system was upgraded from Karmic, in the normal way - it is not a
fresh install.

Would a screenshot help?

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Latest update makes fonts unreadable

2010-04-11 Thread Brent N.
With one user, the guest session isn't offered (at least not in the shutdown
menu).

Therefore I created a new user, and Nebook Launcher displayed exactly the
same (unreadable). At this point there WAS a guest session in the menu, so
I tried it, but it uses the regular gnome menu, not the netbook launcher, so
it wasn't a great test.

I will try making a bootable USB stick, and report back.

Thank you.

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Fonts are unreadable on some hardware

2010-05-02 Thread Brent N.
Okay, I think I have this diagnosed and solved (as much as I can do)

This problem seems to arise from having an old version of
ubuntu-netbook-remix installed, (perhaps even from Jaunty), which doesn't
get removed when the newer version is installed.

The problem seems to stem from one package:
libgl1-mesa-glx

This cannot be removed by itself, but *by installing libgl1-mesa-swx11*
*
*
Installing this package removes the following packages:
libgl1-mesa-glx ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-netbook ubuntu-netbook-remix
so I was worried that my netbook launcher would no longer function - but it
works fine.

After installing this package (which uninstalls the other 4), my fonts in
unr are restored to normal!!

(ps - this also affects gnome-shell, which is also fixed by this
package.)

Re: [Bug 550910] Re: Fonts are unreadable on some hardware

2010-05-03 Thread Brent N.
Ok, sorry, my earlier answer was incomplete.

After posting this I noticed that my graphics were very slow and choppy
(due, I guess, to the lack of 3d rendering) and dug a little further.

It appears that the problem stemmed from the fact that the libgl1-mesa-glx
package was not the official Ubuntu version, but rather a 3rd party version
(mediahacks, I think). I noticed this using the command dpkg -l
libgl1-mesa-glx, which listed the version string as something like like
"7.7.1-ubuntu-mediahacks" (I don't recall exactly)

After installing libgl1-mesa-swx11 (which uninstalled libgl1-mesa-glx), I
listed the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list.d, and removed the mediahacks
repository.

I then did an apt-get update, and re-installed libgl1-mesa-glx, which now
became the one from the official ubuntu repositories.

This fixed the font problem altogether.

I don't recall when or why I installed that repository, but the package
there would appear to be broken or incompatible with the new clutter.

[Bug 481104] Re: mythtranscode doesn't exit on completion

2010-04-06 Thread Brent N.
I have upgraded my mythtv system to Ubuntu 10.04 beta-1, and the problem
still exists in that version. I hope this fix is pushed out before the
final release of 10.04.

[Bug 374265] Re: [lucid regression] Acer Aspire ONE, Atheros AR5001 (168c:001c) frequently causes all AP clients to disassociate

2010-03-30 Thread Brent N.
I can confirm this probem on my AAOne running lucid beta-1. It was also
present in Karmic, but I was able to use madwifi instead, which resolved
the issue.

I have not been able to get madwifi working in lucid yet.

[Bug 449578] Re: karmic won't suspend on netbook even thou option is enabled

2010-02-17 Thread Brent N.
I am seeing the same thing with Karmic UNR on an Acer Aspire One, but it
is inconsistent.

On a fresh boot, it will suspend fine, but sometime after running awhile
(and a few successful suspend/resume cycles) it no longer suspends.

When this happens, selecting suspend from the menu or from the applet
also fail.

[Bug 520751] Re: [lucid] acer aspire one suspend broken

2010-03-06 Thread Brent N.
I also have an aspire one, and for me, suspend appears to almost complete -
screen goes black, but backlight and power light remain on.
I can successfully suspend and resume from gdm on the initial boot, but not
from the desktop. Also, if I log in and log back out, I can no longer suspend
successfully from GDM (screen freezes without going black).

[Bug 520751] Re: [lucid] acer aspire one suspend broken

2010-03-06 Thread Brent N.
Ok, It seems that suspend/resume won't work with an SD card plugged in
(at least in the left slot - haven't tried the right)

Removing the SD card, allows suspend and resume to work correctly again!

[Bug 481104] Re: mythtranscode doesn't exit on completion

2009-11-21 Thread Brent N.
Yes, I have this same problem. The non-exiting mythtranscode processes
are preventing my backend from auto-powering off. I can kill them, and
all is back to normal.

For the time being I have set up a cron job to killall mythtranscode
every evening, to allow the system to shut down, but of course, there
COULD be valid transcodes going on - and the system would be shut down
most of the day too, if these jobs exited correctly.

OK. That's just weird. I had the same problem, changed my timezone to
Berlin, and the update worked just fine. The update is in process, if
it finishes I'll try to change my timezone back. For the record, my
timezone was Indianapolis.

another. It crashes as soon as I press new-->parametric function.

[Bug 138255] Re: missing landscape.sty

2007-09-08 Thread Brent N. Stephens
Try \usepackage{lscape}, and then \begin{landscape}...\end{landscape}

I have lscape on my system (standard install). It could be that
landscape.sty has been replaced by lscape.sty

In general, when you update TeX and you think you have lost something, it's
very likely that a different package supplies the functionality you're looking
for. TUG (TeX Users Group) is a good starting point for figuring out how to do
whatever with TeX.

[Bug 179046] Re: texhash should include user's home directory

2007-12-28 Thread Brent N. Stephens
I think that's by design. On my system, if I run texhash as root, then
it updates everything but my ~/texmf directory. If I run texhash as
USER, then it updates /home/USER/texmf. That way each user can update
their own home texmf directory as they need.

[Bug 122440] Re: Tex Live is not fully tetex compliant

I had to manually install texlive-humanities. I had upgraded from
texlive 2005. I know this bug is about tetex, but it seems related
anyhow. It appears that texlive-humanities-2005 doesn't exist but
texlive-humanities-2007 does.

I hope that was helpful.

[Bug 122440] Re: Tex Live is not fully tetex compliant

2007-06-26 Thread Brent N. Stephens
Right, but texlive-humanities contains some of the files that had been
in texlive-extra. So if anyone is trying to do an upgrade from
texlive-2005 then it could very well break things. I had one particular
file that compiled fine with texlive 2005, but failed to compile with
2007 until i added texlive-humanities.

Not a big deal to me. I managed to find what I needed. I just thought
you might want the information. Now you can do whatever you want with
it. :)

[Bug 119734] synaptics touchpad eratic in gutsy

2007-06-10 Thread Brent N. Stephens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ksynaptics

My synaptics touchpad worked great in Feisty. I don't like the default
behavior so I use ksynaptics to manage the touchpad. In gutsy, with ksynaptics
0.3.3-2ubuntu1, xorg 1:7.2-3ubuntu3, and xorg-driver-fglrx
7.1.0-8.34.8+2.6.22.1-6.8 Maybe it's a problem with the xserver. I am using a
patch for fglrx found here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22/+bug/115188
I don't think the patch would affect this, but I don't really know.

I have disabled tapping, but sometimes tapping still happens. The
scroll area on the right covers 1/4 of the touchpad. The horizontal
scroll doesn't work at all.

The problem no longer occurs. I don't know why it did before. I have

should just be removed, since I posted it and I can't reproduce it.
Then again, maybe there is a quirk somewhere that makes it happen. I
don't know.
