Lose window 'title bar' on startups

Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
 Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: compiz

First, I'm not sure this is an issue with compiz. I would be surprised if
this bug isn't a duplicate.
Whenever I boot my system, everything is fine but when I open any
application or window, it appears, usually, in the upper-left hand side of
my display and lacks a title bar (so no title, close, minimize, maximize
buttons). Transparency seems to work find, but I am also unable to switch
windows with alt+tab and am unable to switch to different workplaces either
through ctrl+alt+[arrow] or through the workplace applet on my gnome panel.

I've been able to work around this by opening a terminal via the
gnome-panel menu and running 'compiz'. This gives me my menu bars back
and all my previous functions (that I've noticed). It would seem that
I am unable to adjust the 'level' of my Visual Effects (through
SystemPreferencesAppearance). I can select Normal level, and I get
the usual flickering and the alert asking me if I want to keep these
settings, but this appears to have no effect and compiz behaves as if
I had not made the change. When I go back to check my Visual Effect
settings I see that the radio is on None and not Normal.

[Bug 742028] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompWindow::id()

2011-04-01 Thread Brewster Malevich
I can easily reproduce this by running 'grass' from the command line,
which produces a compiz crash report.

[Bug 743237] [NEW] Firefox does not remember whether Add-on Bar is closed

2011-03-26 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Close your Add-on Bar (can be via the little x on the bar).
Now, 'quit' firefox.
Open up firefox, again. Note that the Add-on Bar is back up (grrr).

This may only be when there are add-on that can appear in the bar (e.g.
Zotero)??

[Bug 689731] Re: Workspace switcher launcher icon does not preview open applications or allow single click to new workspace

2011-03-26 Thread Brewster Malevich
I can live without the single-click feature, but it not being able to
see windows in other workspaces can be a bit of a pain (IMHO). This is
especially the case when the Unity bar/strip/launcher/whatever shows
applications open in all workspaces.

[Bug 737003] [NEW] Unity launcher files and applications start two programs with keyboad entry

2011-03-17 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Hit ctrl-a to bring up Unity's application menu (or whatever you call it).
Now type in the name of a program that will be in your 'Most frequently used',
in my case I might do type 'update' and I see that the update-manager appears
selected, both in 'Most frequently used', and 'Installed'.
Now, if I hit 'enter' on my keyboard to launch the update-manager, I get two
instances of the same application. I would expect only one.

I would expect Unity to highlight a single program, most likely from the list
of those frequently used, until that list has no matches, at which point I
would expect Unity to highlight an app from the installed list.
In other words, I would like to be able to type in my program name and just hit
enter to get [a single instance of] my program.

Same goes for the Folder+files menu... I cannot test this because I have
another bug, at the moment.

EDIT- Nevermind... now it's not doing it.

[Bug 732412] [NEW] LibreOffice Writer has no icon in Unity and is labeled LibreOffice Small Device Format Importer

2011-03-09 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

With lowriter version 1:3.3.1-1ubuntu5.

In natty (AMD64), if I start LibreOffice Writer (through any means),
with Unity, the icon for the process in Unity is a question mark which
is labeled LibreOffice Small Device Format Importer in the Unity
mouse-over widget.

I would expect the usual LibreOffice Writer icon to appear (instead of
the generic question mark), and for this to be labeled LibreOffice
Writer.

Hey Scott,

Yeah, I'm on Sun Java.
I have no error when I open Arduino after installing the package from your PPA.

P.S. Thanks for getting on this so quickly. Nice work!

[Bug 554561] Re: ubuntuone-syncdaemon crashed with AttributeError in _upgrade_metadata_3()

2010-09-30 Thread Brewster Malevich
I got this error after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 RC x86. I hadn't
clicked on anything relating to U1. Just logged into my account and then
this crash. I had upgraded to 10.10 amd64 previously on my laptop for
the beta test (which is linked to my U1 account) although I have had no
problem there.

Is there any way for me to remove this package manually without relying
on dpkg, apt-get etc?

Even if I were to gut the directories from 'dpkg -L preview-latex-style'

[Bug 565527] [NEW] Lose window 'title bar' on startups

2010-04-17 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

First, I'm not sure this is an issue with compiz. I would be surprised if this
bug isn't a duplicate.
Whenever I boot my system, everything is fine but when I open any application
or window, it appears, usually, in the upper-left hand side of my display and
lacks a title bar (so no title, close, minimize, maximize buttons).
Transparency seems to work find, but I am also unable to switch windows with
alt+tab and am unable to switch to different workplaces either through
ctrl+alt+[arrow] or through the workplace applet on my gnome panel.

I've been able to work around this by opening a terminal via the gnome-
panel menu and running 'compiz'. This gives me my menu bars back and all
my previous functions (that I've noticed). It would seem that I am
unable to adjust the 'level' of my Visual Effects (through
SystemPreferencesAppearance). I can select Normal level, and I get
the usual flickering and the alert asking me if I want to keep these
settings, but this appears to have no effect and compiz behaves as if I
had not made the change. When I go back to check my Visual Effect
settings I see that the radio is on None and not Normal.

[Bug 563942] [NEW] WISHLIST: Put flower themed desktop wallpaper in shifting wallpaper set like 'Cosmos'

2010-04-15 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-wallpapers

I love the new wallpapers you guys put in the recent update. I noticed
that there a several flower-themed wallpapers. I was thinking it might
be a good idea to put them all together in a single, rotating wallpaper
set like the cosmos wallpapers are.

As you know, it's just a matter of a simple XML file. This is the XML
file used for the cosmos wallpaper:
/usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos/background-1.xml

[Bug 555301] [NEW] unable to delete or remove parent directories from User Defined Folders through Nautilus or U1 webUI

2010-04-04 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Right click on any folder and select 'Synchronize on Ubuntu One from
the context menu. This folder will then appear under User Defined
Folders in the U1 webUI. However, there is no way to delete or remove
this folder from U1. Selecting any folders within this folder in the
webUI cases a little trash-can icon to appear beside it, and you are
able to delete the folder this way, but there is no way to delete or
remove the parent directory. Ideally, it would be nice if we could do
this, both through the webUI and through Nautilus via a context menu
(perhaps it would also be nice to show that this directory was synced in
the first place, with a U1 emblem or something).

[Bug 545268] Re: Context menu's Synchronize on Ubuntu One appears to do nothing

2010-03-31 Thread Brewster Malevich
Chris,
I see that my folder is synced (I don't think there is a way to delete or
unsync it, from nautilus or webUI, but that's a dif bug report) but I see
nothing through nautilus that indicates that is ~has~ been synced or ~is~ being
synced. Shouldn't the directory have an emblem to show it's status?

[Bug 552292] [NEW] Icon for tomboy in notification area is different from icon for tomboy applet

2010-03-30 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

I recently noticed that the notification area icon for Tomboy has become back
and white to match Ubuntu's look. However, the icon for the Tomboy panel applet
remains the classic legal-pad-yellow that it has always been. It would be great
if the Tomboy panel applet could share the same new (sexy) icon with the
notification area.

[Bug 549309] [NEW] Nautilus 'file-action' notification icon looks unsexy out of place

2010-03-26 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

Nautilus' 'file-action' notification icon stands at odds with the other
notification icons. You can see this icon in a number of situations, for
example, try to copy your music library to your desktop and you will see
it pop up (I'll attach a screenshot, the icon in question is second from
the left). Something with softer edges and perhaps more grey/white would
be a nice start :-)

suppose I would expect to see a copy of that directory in my U1 directory,

No.
I see 'Broadcast' and 'Skype' (I made my own .desktop for this). That is
it. If I have evolution running, I see the usual mail boxes, Contacts
and Compose new message, but still no Evolution icon.

[Bug 542432] [NEW] Empathy and Evolution are missing from indicator-applet menu

2010-03-19 Thread Brewster Malevich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

After upgrading from alpha3 to beta1, as my summary suggests, Empathy
and Evolution have gone missing from the indicator-applet menu. Both
programs are still installed and appear to run fine. On a similar note,
I've noticed that Evolution appears under the main menu (via gnome-
panel) but empathy does not have an icon there.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Brewster Malevich
I was sceptical of this change at first. But having only used lucid since the
alpha 3 release, I've grown quite fond of the current button position, on the
left hand side of the screen.
I would encourage users to be patient and to give lucid (now beta 1) some
solid, rigorous use (not 5 minutes as virtualized install) before making a
decision and voicing an opinion.
While I understand that many people have put forth this effort and continue to
disagree with this design choice, I have been surprised with the large number
of knee-jerk reactions to this change.

[Bug 173855] Re: Rhythmbox does not remember selected item from Library

2010-03-16 Thread Brewster Malevich
I was thinking of filing a bug about RB not remembering the state of
side panes before it quits

(ex: if I roll-up the 'stores' section, quit RB, and then start the
program again, the 'stores' section will be 'rolled-down' and not rolled
up as I had originally selected)

Would that be covered under this bug report? I can see a common solution
to both of these problems.

gvfs was not installed. It was uninstalled after an update just after I

was an 'impossible situation' due to 'unmet dependencies' (I copied the

[Bug 537686] Re: Tomboy sync with U1 server gives 504 error

If this is just a 504... perhaps there is a more graceful way for this to be
handled, either in the web ui (in which case this should go to U1 server as a
wishlist) or in Tomboy (then take it to tomboy).
Just a thought. :-)
