[Bug 1175708] [NEW] ia32-libs does not include lib32nss-mdns
Public bug reported: Running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, as installed on a Dell XPS 13 Sputnik 2 developer laptop. 32-bit programs such as Aurora or nightly builds of Firefox cannot look up .local mDNS addresses by default; I'd already installed the 'ia32-libs' package to get 32-bit programs working. By trial and error I found there was a lib32nss-mdns package which includes the necessary support, but was not installed by the ia32-libs package. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ia32-libs/+bug/218097 sounds similar but claims to have been fixed in 2008, so doesn't seem to match up with what I see on 12.04 and 13.04. [Bug 854045] [NEW] Unity launcher icons are all placed overlapping at same vertical position, making launcher bar unusable
Public bug reported: Never saw this until today; running 11.04 for a few months. Keeps happening after manual restart of unity via 'unity --replace' in a terminal, and after restarting the entire X session by killing Xorg and logging back in. Screenshot of the launcher toolbar attached. This is a dual-monitor configuration (2x 1920x1080 monitors on DisplayPort, using proprietary NVidia drivers). [Bug 482443] Re: jpegexiforient fails on files scaled with imagemagick
I'm also seeing jpegexiforient seemingly doing nothing on files saved from Gimp; I'm not 100% convinced it will actually add the setting to a file that doesn't already have it, but only changes it if it's already in there. Note that you can add these with the 'exif' tool as well, and it will actually add an EXIF block and the orientation setting if not already there: $ exif -c --output=portrait-rotated.jpg --ifd=0 --tag=0x0112 --set- value=8 --no-fixup portrait-raw.jpg After doing that, jpegexiforient seems to actually take effect on the resulting file. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/482443 Title: jpegexiforient fails on files scaled with imagemagick To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libjpeg6b/+bug/482443/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 764890] [NEW] Firefox language settings load Google in Cherokee translation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox I noticed that the Google home page was coming up in Cherokee language instead of English on my Natty install; going into the language preferences in Firefox I found that the only entry listed a 'chrome://' URL -- unfortunately I didn't take a screen shot and don't know the exact URL. After adding English-US moving it to top, and saving, Google now defaults to English as expected. Unfortunately the dialog no longer lists the 'chrome:' entry, but just lists English-US and English. [Bug 706646] [NEW] Synaptic prevents apt-get, Software Center from working while Synaptic is open
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synaptic Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64; synaptic 0.63.1ubuntu14. It seems that Synaptic holds a lock on /var/lib/dpkg the entire time it's open, even if you've just got it up to browse the package list. This interferes with attempts to use other package manager front-ends such as apt-get and the Ubuntu Software Center app. Attempting to use Ubuntu Software Center while Synaptic is also open appears to work fine... but when you actually start an installation, the progress bar sticks at 0% and shows this status message: Waiting for synaptic to exit Diabolically, this message is only visible if you actually click over to the 'In Progress (1)' section in the sidebar -- it's easy to assume it's simply working away and taking a while to install a big package, since everything looks normal. According to what's visible in the sidebar it claims to be in progress, and there's a spinner indicating it's working away. Attempting to use apt-get on the command line while Synaptic is open gives this error (cf bug #74134): $ sudo apt-get install banshee-community-extensions [sudo] password for brion: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? Note that the Ubuntu Software Center doesn't lock the dpkg/apt administration dirs when it's not actively working with packages, which is one of the reasons I usually use it instead of Synaptic... but not every package comes up in searches in Software Center, so I still need to fire it up sometimes. If Synaptic still needs to be shipped and installed by default, it would be very nice if it would avoid locking things while it's not actively working with them! [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10
I'm seeing this happen immediately after a fresh installation; I never explicitly chose the proprietary NVidia drivers, but did select the general option to install proprietary drivers, which leads me to suspect it did go ahead and install them. After the GRUB boot loader finishes, the screen drops into power-saving mode and can never be woken again short of a reboot, that I've found. Booting into recovery mode shows the text-mode kernel boot messages fly by, then the screen drops in the same way. I never get either a text shell or an X login screen. Ctrl+alt+F1 etc to switch VTs has no discernable effect. Running a fresh 64-bit 10.10 desktop release CD. Video is an NVIDIA Quadro® NVS 295. Using one DVI monitor connected through a Displayport-DVI adapter; I've tried both ports and double-tested with two known-good monitors. The desktop installer CD itself boots just fine. Under 10.04 this machine worked ok with stock drivers and with proprietary drivers pulled from Nvidia directly. -- Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660596 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 89937] Installer crashes on GRUB on iMac 17 Core 2 Duo
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity Trying to set up Ubuntu 6.10 AMD64 to dual-boot with Mac OS X on an iMac 17 Core 2 Duo box; 1GB memory, 250 GB hard drive. I partitioned the drive roughly in half under Mac OS X with Boot Camp Assistant, then booted with an Ubuntu 6.10 AMD-64 LiveCD. After manually editing xorg.conf to reduce the screen resolution to 1024x768 to get around a problem with screen corruption, I went through the GUI installer. I selected manually partition and removed the large second partition which Boot Camp Assistant created, replacing it with a large ext3 root partition (sda3) and a 2GB swap partition (sda4). When selecting mount points, I had to manually rename the automatically generated /media/EFI System Partition to /media/efi-system-partition for one of the Mac- related partitions (sda1). The rest of the installation took default values other than the timezone. Everything seemed to go fine until it reached GRUB installation, at which point a dialog appeared stating: Unable to install GRUB in (hd0) Executing 'grub-install (hd0)' failed. This is a fatal error. [OK] After clicking OK, a Python stack trace from the installer is shown, asking to create a new bug here and attach some log files. Will attach stack trace and log files... Bug 76786 appears to be the same issue but is missing the log data; I would attach there instead but the dialog said specifically not to attach my logs to an existing bug. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Installer crashes on GRUB on iMac 17 Core 2 Duo https://launchpad.net/bugs/89937 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 89937] Re: Installer crashes on GRUB on iMac 17 Core 2 Duo
Various forum comments I found googling imply that the problem is that grub doesn't understand the partitioning format that the Mac uses (though, annoyingly enough, the partition editor seems just fine with it and there's now warning until the entire operating system has been installed). I've worked around it by wiping the partition table with Linux fdisk and installing the machine Linux-only for the time being. -- Installer crashes on GRUB on iMac 17 Core 2 Duo https://launchpad.net/bugs/89937 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
