[Bug 1825754] Re: Popping in headphones when no sound is playing after upgrade to ubuntu 19.04

2019-06-26 Thread Burt P.
I had already downgraded and couldn't try the suggested workaround from
#15. I've upgraded to disco again and the popping is still there, but
the workaround quiets it.

It does not seem possible to run `apport-collect 1497149` in this
environment. There is no terminal, and there are no virtual terminals
available. There is nothing but the install window, and if that is
minimized, then there is nothing at all. THAT IS THE BUG.

I spoke too soon, the lock screen is still 640x480, but when unlocked it
returns to 1920x1080. I can live with this, but something is still wrong
with the driver.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-12 Thread Burt P.
Regarding #43, #44, #51, here is what I did:
* Reset the grub config file
* Removed all nvidia* packages
* Reverted everything to the standard bionic as described here:
https://askubuntu.com/a/229663
* Removed all the old package information using: dpkg --purge `dpkg
--get-selections | grep deinstall | cut -f1`
* Installed nvidia-driver-390: apt-get install nvidia-driver-390
* Restarted

Everything seems to work.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-10 Thread Burt P.
Regarding my comment #43:
The solution suggested in #46 doesn't work. While it does force 1920x1080, even
after login, the nvidia driver is not working.

lspci -v does show "Kernel driver in use: nvidia" for the card, but
nvidia-settings behaves as if the driver is not loaded and glxinfo shows
llvmpipe as the OpenGL renderer.

everything works, but in only 640x480.

dmesg looks like nvidia is loaded, but it ends up using llvmpipe anyway.

object types, bitrate modes, channel layouts, and sample rates cause a
crash, for example AAC-LC/VBR mode 5/96kHz [1]. It was patched by the
maintainer [2], Debian has packaged it [3] and it just needs to be

[Bug 1310282] Re: gsmartcontrol doesn't report ATA/SATA version correctly

2014-05-27 Thread Burt P.
Version is '0' because the program tries to make an integer out of the
value. Matching /ATA Version/ also matched "SATA Version" and caused the
two instances of "ATA Version: 0" to appear. The attached change fixes
those problems.

[Bug 1289917] [NEW] Selecting an output device in sound settings doesn't work

2014-03-08 Thread Burt P.
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04
In System Settings -> Sound, select an output device doesn't change the output
device or even show different settings on the right side.

In the attached screengrab, notice that "Analog Output/Amplifier/SB
Audigy" is selected, but the right side still shows the HDMI output
settings.

This control panel is completely unusable.

[Bug 1283580] Re: Unable to switch between users, system hangs on logout

2014-02-27 Thread Burt P.
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu 13.10, Unity, lightdm, nVidia drivers.

I added a second user account, after the first time switching between users,
user switching just stopped working.
If I use the menu and just select another user, most often nothing at all
happens.
If the screen is locked and I push the switch user button, it looks like it
tries to go back to the login screen, but ends up coming back to the lock
screen.
For a while I could log out of one user, then log in as another but now that
isn't working either. Selecting logout from the menu will bring up the little
logout or shutdown thing, then after I select logout nothing seems to happen.
If I open a terminal and type gnome-session-quit it says something about how
its not in a running state.

I currently have to restart the computer to switch users, which is
  really frustrating.
+
+ 27 Feb 2014:
+ It gets stranger. I got stuck at the lock screen again and selected switch
user, with no result. I tried to use Alt-Ctrl-F1 to go to a different terminal,
and I got screen corruption at the top with a kindof mangled blinking curser,
but if I typed it andded mangled text-mode text at the top, but it also still
showed in the lock screen password text box. If I entered my password it
unlocked back to my session.
+
+ None of dmesg, Xorg.0.log, or lightdm.log seem to show any errors, but
+ I'll upload lightdm.log.

[Bug 596661] Re: In gnome-exe-thumbnailer the wine icon is too big and the exe icon is too small

2011-01-13 Thread Burt P.
I don't think it is true that _most_ icons cases are missing a 48x48
icon. In your showcase, 8/11 with icons have 48px icons. I think it is
actually the reverse, that most apps released after Windows XP (ten
years ago) do have 48x48 icons. Anyway, the point of an icon is to
identify the program very quickly, so that you can look through the
files in a folder and find the executable you want to run. Also, I like
having the version number there, but showing on top of the icon makes it
even harder to use the icon for its purpose. I think the actual icon
should be the largest, stretched if necessary, and the wine icon small
and at the top right, and the version number where it is. At least an
option for that, please. In the few folders of windows apps, I don't
care if it is ugly, as long as it is easier to use.

[Bug 696392] [NEW] Desktop background chooser back button looks like a forward button

2011-01-01 Thread Burt P.
Public bug reported:

In the Background tab of the Appearance Preferences dialog, a stack of
background images has back and forward buttons below it. The back button
looks the same as the forward button. The back button does actually go
backwards. See attached screenshot.

[Bug 641357] [NEW] Required method to remove rhythmbox from soundmenu does not exist or is not obvious enough

2010-09-17 Thread Burt P.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

>From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu ...
"A compliant player should not insert itself into the menu merely because it is
installed, but should insert itself as soon as you start actively using it
(e.g. playing something with it for the first time, or adding music to its
library). The player’s own settings interface should also have a checkbox for
whether to integrate the player into the sound menu"

Rhythmbox 0.13.1 included in Ubuntu 10.10 does not comply.

[Bug 641155] Re: New experimental multiboot version of memtest86+ only sees 640K of memory

2010-09-17 Thread Burt P.
If I choose (C) configure -> (3) Memory Sizing -> (2) Probe, it will see the
full 2GB of memory.
I tried using the official memtest booted directly from a disk, and it worked
with (1) BIOS - Std, so this is only happening with this multiboot version.

[Bug 641155] [NEW] New experimental multiboot version of memtest86+ only sees 640K of memory

2010-09-17 Thread Burt P.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: memtest86+

The two new memtest86+ options added in the maverick beta load memtest but only
see 640K of memory.
This is on a system that has this problem too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/memtest86+/+bug/19885

Now four unusable memtest options in default grub menu.

[Bug 19885] Re: memtest86+: does not work: wouldn't fit into memory

2010-09-17 Thread Burt P.
Still exists in Maverick. Also, maverick adds two more memtest options
to grub, experimental multiboot, that are also broken, but in a
different way; they only see 640K of memory. Anyway, regular memtest
still fails to load, new memtest loads but only sees 640K. Now four
broken options in default grub menu.

[Bug 621508] [NEW] Volume buttons don't work after screensaver becomes active

2010-08-20 Thread Burt P.
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 10.04 it is impossible to change volume by using the hardware
volume buttons once the computer goes to screensaver.

For example, you're listening to music at night on your USB headphones
with a great volume control thing on the cord, and you need to adjust
the volume slightly, first you must get up and log in again, just to
push the volume button, and the light from your monitor kills your eyes.

Or maybe someone leaves his music on too loud on his laptop and then
leaves, and you want to turn it down, but you don't know the password,
so the only thing you can do is turn the whole thing off.

Anyway, hardware volume buttons need to work in screensaver/lock screen.
