[Bug 837681] Re: Automatic partitioning corrupts GUID partition table (GPT)

2011-08-31 Thread Chad A. Davis
Even before installing the second system, simply doing a manual partitioning
results in an odd partition table. The partition table generated when selecting
'use the entire disk' puts the GPT partition at the beginning. This shows up in
gparted as the bios_grub partition.
When I manually partition and create one swap and one ext4 root partition, I'd
figure the GPT partition would go at the end. Both fdisk and sfdisk show sda1
as being a GPT partition, however. And gparted doesn't see any bios_grub
partition at all. Somehow the system boots but it seems that the partition
table is inconsistent. That might explain why later resizing partitions to
install another system fails.
I'm attaching the logs from a single installation using manual partitioning.

[Bug 837681] [NEW] Automatic partitioning corrupts GUID partition table (GPT)

2011-08-30 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

With a functioning Oneiric installation on a MacBookPro6,2 I installed
Oneiric again and chose the automatic partition resize option. This
corrupted the partition table, preventing booting of either operating
system. It also doesn't appear possible to repair the system, as no
tools can read the partition table to mount / fix the situation.

TEST CASE
Install Oneiric on a GPT machine (e.g. a Mac) with an empty partition table.
Start by creating a swap partition of the size of the RAM. Then create an ext4
(the default) partition for the remaining space, but leave ~1MB for the GPT /
bios_grub partition. The installer (partman-efi?) will place the GPT /
bios_grub partition in this free space. This system boots correctly.

Now install a second instance of Oneiric and select automatic resize of
existing partitions, leaving the default settings (50% of space
allocated to each system)

That resulted in this partition table (from sfdisk -l) :

Disk /dev/sda: 38913 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot Start End #cyls#blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 0+497-498- 400+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
start: (c,h,s) expected (0,0,35) found (1023,254,63)
end: (c,h,s) expected (497,249,43) found (1023,254,63)
/dev/sda2 *497+ 20035- 19538- 156933594 83 Linux
start: (c,h,s) expected (497,249,44) found (1023,254,63)
/dev/sda3 20035+ 20035- 1- 977 ee GPT
/dev/sda4 20035+ 38408- 18374- 147583008 83 Linux

palimsest reports that the disk is unpartitioned.

gparted reports erros on the two ext4 partitions:

e2label: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda2
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
dumpe2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
dumpe2fs: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda2

gparted reports for the bios_grub partition:

Unable to detect file system! Possible reasons are:
- The file system is damaged
- The file system is unknown to GParted
- There is no filesystem available (unformatted)
- The device entry /dev/sda3 is missing

The problem is not the result of having two systems installed. If you
install a system with the partitioning option to use the entire disk and
then install another system that automatically resizes existing
partitions, then both systems boot correctly.

I don't think there was too little space left from my manual
partitioning of the initial system, because the initial operating system
booted fine.

Maybe the problem is having the GPT / bios_grub partition at the end of
the partition table, since the default is to place it at the beginning
of the partition table (when installing with the partitioning option to
use the entire disk).

Unfortunately, I can no longer access the logs, as I cannot mount the
partitions.

I don't believe the Invalid UTF-8 user name from bug 834137 is relate
to this bug here, because that bug there occurs even in an English
desktop session. Updated the description to remove that point. This bug
here is about the garbled text in the dash that occurs in a German
desktop session (no other languages tested yet).

[Bug 558728] Re: cdimage_resource script in checkbox fails to read casper.log

2011-07-21 Thread Chad A. Davis
Verfied.
After removing LTS from /var/log/installer/{media-info,casper.log} the test
case behaves as described
This allowed 0.91. to create ~/.cache/checkbox/text_report.txt
Removing media-info prevented 0.9.1 from creating text_report.txt
Installing 0.9.2 allowed creation of text_report.txt again.

Can this be marked as verification-done or is that now dependent on bug
814085 ?

[Bug 352740] Re: checkbox-backend 0.7 doesn't run

2011-07-20 Thread Chad A. Davis
I also started from Ubuntu 10.04.2 (checkbox 0.9.1), so I don't have
checkbox-backend.

I verified that without -proposed, installing checkbox 0.9.1 does not
install checkbox-gtk (nor -cli)

With -proposed, installing checkbox 0.9.2 also does not install
checkbox-gtk nor checkbox-cli (neither with apt-get, nor with software-
center).

However, apt-get does install 'Recommends' by default. I tested on
aislerot, which is recommended by ubuntu-desktop:

sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop aisleriot
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-cache show ubuntu-desktop | grep -o 'Recommends: .* aisleriot,'

Perhaps the behavior of software center has changed in new releases, but
this was a fresh install of 10.04.2

[Bug 702283] Re: usb-creator doesn't create EFI-bootable USB sticks

2011-07-20 Thread Chad A. Davis
The issue remains with the oneiric daily ISOs from 2011-07-19 (post-
alpha 2)

I am trying to boot a MacBookPro 6,2

In each case I used usb-creator-gtk 0.2.30 on a host system (amd64) also
running Oneiric dev branch (up-to-date as of 2011-07-20)

I tried
oneiric-desktop-amd64+mac.iso
oneiric-alternate-amd64+mac.iso
oneiric-desktop-amd64.iso

In the last case case, the system boots, but because it's the wrong
hardware (amd64 image on amd64+mac hardware), the display ultimately
freezes (the desktop login sound is played, but the boot splash never
disappears). The boot process appears to work up to that point. It seems
to simply not able to switch the video mode.

I also tried creating the USB stick from the MacBookPro itself (also
running Oneiric dev branch and up-to-date). There was no difference.

[Bug 812738] Re: Tell user when sudo required to collect data

2011-07-20 Thread Chad A. Davis
That's a fair point. Call this a request to improve the error message in
that case.

** Summary changed:

- No permission to /var/log/installer/casper.log
+ Tell user when sudo required to collect data

** Description changed:

Expected: File a bug against oem-config, as non-root user
- Got: ubuntu-bug does not have permission to collect
/var/log/installer/casper.log, unless under sudo
+ Got: Cannot connect to crash database, please check your internet
connection. [Errno 13] No permission: /var/log/installer/casper.log
+
+ I.e. ubuntu-bug does not have permission to collect
+ /var/log/installer/casper.log, unless under sudo, but the error message
+ is misdirected here. Because I know what is stored in
+ /var/log/installer, I assume that running under sudo would resolve the
+ issue, but that it not clear from the error message. If the data
+ collection doesn't have permission for some file, one could suggest that
+ the user run ubuntu-bug under sudo.

[Bug 813056] [NEW] OEM install: incomplete language support shown twice

2011-07-19 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

ISO tesing of ubuntu/lucid-desktop-i386.iso from 2011-07-19

Expected: incomplete language support to be shown when 'oem' user logs
in, before doing oem-config-prepare.

Actual: incomplete language support is shown for the 'oem' user. It
gets installed. However, after oem-config-prepare and a reboot, the new
user also sees the warning. Running the suggested action, shows that the
packages were already installed. I.e. the warning is unnecessary and
confusing for the end user.

[Bug 813144] [NEW] Clock indicator too narrrow: shift other indicators at 10:00

2011-07-19 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Expected: toolbar indicator icons to not flicker or move unnecessarily
Actual: When the time changes from 9:59 to 10:00 the icons to the left of the
clock are shifted to the left.

TEST CASE:
sudo date -s 9:59
I found that the toolbar is not automatically redrawn. In that case, lock the
screen (Ctrl-Alt-L) and unlock it to see the toolbar redrawn to 9:59 before it
changes to 10:00

I imagine this would also effect the 19:59 to 20:00 transition but I
cannot set the clock to 24-hour to test that.

The toolbar is correct both before and after, but the movement is
noticeable. Video attached.

[Bug 352740] Re: checkbox-backend 0.7 doesn't run

2011-07-19 Thread Chad A. Davis
Either I do not follow the test care, or the verification fails.
I removed checkbox and checkbox-gtk and checkbox-cli
Enabling proposed and installing checkbox 0.9.2 only installs checkbox, because
it only 'suggests' checkbox-cli and checkbox-gtk.
Should checkbox rather 'recommends' checkbox-cli and checkbox-gtk if they are
to be installed by default?

[Bug 812235] Re: Lucid: d-i : Swap smaller than RAM on entire-disk install

2011-07-18 Thread Chad A. Davis
I believe this is distinct from bug 760336 because this was a default,
entire-disk install here. With bug 760336 the swap was probably shrunk
because there was not enough space, since /home was a separate
partition.

[Bug 808274] [NEW] dconf-editor windows too small to edit

2011-07-10 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
dconf-tools 0.7.5-3
Expected: to be able to see settings in all categories in dconf-editor
Got: Some categories display the Name/Value list window so small that the
values are impossible to view/edit

The list of Name/Value pairs is a different size depending on the
current category. Some are plenty large. Others are so small that
viewing the values or editing them is impossible, because the list
window is shorter than a single item. Screenshot attached.

[Bug 807979] [NEW] deja-dup should depend on ubuntuone-couch

2011-07-09 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Test case:
Install deja-dup
Select Ubuntu One as the backup destination
Start a backup
= crashes looking for couch.auth

Work around:
sudo apt-get install ubuntuone-couch

Ubuntu One is provided as a possible (not default) backup destination
but the backup crashes looking for couch.auth which is provided by
ubuntuone-couch.

The crash is a bug, but just adding the dependency is only my opinion.
One might:

1) make deja-dep depend on ubuntuone-couch (easy, but not strictly necessary
since U1 isn't the default)
2) prompt the user to install ubuntuone-couch when selecting U1 as destination
(more complex)
3) make a dummy package deja-dup-ubuntuone that depends on ubuntuone-couch
(requires the user to know what to install)

[Bug 782507] Re: Installation creates a new swap partition

2011-07-06 Thread Chad A. Davis
My statement regarding hibernation was wrong. It *is* possible to
hibernate one OS while using another and then later resume back into the
first OS, as long each uses a separate swap partition. Whether this use
case is common enough to justify having a separate swap partition for
each OS may be a matter of opinion.

To be clear, the original bug is that when installing over an existing
Ubuntu, an extra swap is created without deleting/reusing the original
swap, leaving one OS and two swap partitions.

[Bug 805851] [NEW] Wording of OSD notification not useful when no notification icon

2011-07-05 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Oneiric dev branch, live DVD

On first login, jockey provides an OSD notification that Restricted
drivers are available and then says something along the lines of Non-
free drivers can improve the function of your computer. or so. The
message does not tell the user what to do to get these drivers, however.
Neither a notification icon nor a launcher show how to proceed.

Before Unity, there was a notification icon in the system tray. I'm not
sure if that was intentionally removed, or if it is currently not
working. Either the bug is that no icon/launcher is shown or the bug is
that the notification text should explain what the user needs to do to
launch jockey-gtk (Additional drivers).

[Bug 805906] Re: [iso testing] system won't shutdown

2011-07-05 Thread Chad A. Davis
Thank you for reporting this bug. It sounds similar to something that
I'm seeing. Can you try one thing to confirm this:

Boot the live DVD, select restart, wait until the hard drive activity
stops (or just wait a good minute or two), then press the enter key and
see if the system reboots.

That is the behavior I'm seeing. I simply see the desktop background,
which seems to suggest that's it's not hanging, but rather that plymouth
is simply not drawing the shutdown splash correctly.

[Bug 805972] [NEW] No mouse scrolling in 'By Category' list

2011-07-05 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Oneiric dev branch iso testing (kubuntu-alternate-amd64+mac.iso on
2011-07-05)

Mouse wheel scrolling (here with two-finger scrolling on the touchpad)
results in jittering/flickering in the 'By Category' list. If the
pointer is on the scroll bar, this doesn't occur (screencast attached).
It seems that the pointer moving in the list and simultaneously
scrolling in the list is causing a conflict of some kind.

Problem does not occur using an external mouse with an actual scroll
wheel.

[Bug 782507] Re: Installation creates a new swap partition

2011-07-05 Thread Chad A. Davis
This also occurs with the 'Guided - resize' installation option. I
installed once with the 'entire disk' option, which creates an extended
partition containing the swap partition. The following install resizes
the ext4 primary partition, then creates a new ext4 logical partition in
the extended partition (makes sense so far), but then also adds another
swap partition into the extended partition (leaving two logical swap
partitions). Screen shot of partition layout attached.

Each system only uses one swap partition. They should probably share a
single swap partition, because it's contents are only persistent during
a hibernate, and it's not possible to leave one OS hibernated and boot
into another OS.

This is with the oneiric dev branch (ubuntu-alternate-amd64.iso from
2011-07-05)

[Bug 804397] [NEW] xdg-open depends on gnome-open, but it's not on the CD

2011-07-01 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

I discovered this while running checkbox from the Oneiric live CD (daily
ISO 2011-07-01), because it uses xdg-open, which in turn requires gnome-
open, to launch the application associated with a certain file type.

ubuntu@ubuntu:/usr/share/checkbox/data/images$ xdg-open *png
/usr/bin/xdg-open: 563: gnome-open: not found

gnome-open is currently available in libgnome2-0 but I imagine that is
not supposed to be included on the CD. Will there be a Gnome3
replacement for gnome-open? I.e. is this a Gnome bug or a xdg-utils bug?

[Bug 778729] Re: Unity's launcher doesn't dodge the scale plugin

2011-06-21 Thread Chad A. Davis
Thank you for answering the question. I understand the design decision.
This was not the original bug report, however. Given that the launcher
should not hide when scale is activated, the bug is that the launcher
obscures windows in scale mode, as shown in the original screenshot. In
order to allow the launcher to remain visible, the scale plugin should
probably subtract the width of the launcher from the width of the usable
desktop to avoid drawing scaled windows underneath the launcher.

[Bug 778729] Re: Unity's launcher doesn't dodge the scale plugin

2011-05-29 Thread Chad A. Davis
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: unity

The launcher is set to 'Dodge Window' (the default). Activating the
scale plugin with two open windows draws the one window under the
launcher. I.e. the launcher does not correctly dodge the scaled windows
(screenshot). This happens whether the launcher is visible just before
activating scale or not. This also occurs with a single maximized
window. The launcher is hidden (whether in dodge or autohide mode), but
reveals itself as soon as scale is activated, which also covers the left
edge of the scaled window below it.

- I noted that the launcher also displays itself when expo is activated,
- even if it is not currently displayed. I cannot tell if this is by
- design, but I would imagine that scale and expo would both want to hide
- the chrome. Please correct me if this behavior is by design.

[Bug 742257] Re: Natty Narwhal 64-bit for Mac: macbook pro runs very hot - no fans can be heard

2011-05-26 Thread Chad A. Davis
So, this doesn't seem to be a bug in lm-sensors. If (many) MacBooks need
to have the coretemp module automatically loaded in order to enable the
fans, can someone figure out the correct package to assign this bug to?
Is this the installer's (ubiquity) responsibility?

[Bug 771246] Re: remapping alt key loses keyboard shortcuts

2011-05-11 Thread Chad A. Davis
I can now reproduce this issue. It is not specific to any hardware
difference between MBP1,1 and MBP6,2. I can reproduce it when I use the
(default) key to summon Unity (the Super key). I generally use
Ctrl+space to summon Unity, and that is my current workaround; this
allows the remapped Alt to function normally.

[Bug 771246] Re: remapping alt key loses keyboard shortcuts

2011-05-11 Thread Chad A. Davis
This happens when running xmodmap manually or letting Gnome run it. But
I think Compiz (and Unity) loads before Gnome.

I tested this by setting Ctrl+space to summon Unity and logging in
again. Then I changed the summon key to Super and my remapped Alt still
functioned normally. I verified this by leaving it set to Super, logging
in again, verified that Alt was broken, then ran unity --replace. Since
xmodmap had already run and now Unity was running after it, the remapped
keys all do what they are supposed to do.

I.e. xmodmap after Unity will keep some holds on Super. I guess that
Unity installs a hook on Super before Gnome/xmodmap gets a chance to
remap it.

Should this be assigned to Compiz, since Unity is not the only
keymapping that Compiz manages?

(Could this have been the reason why Gnome loaded the xmodmap before
anything else, so that the user-defined keyboard shortcuts would be
relative to any remapped keys?)
