[Bug 1338973] Re: scrolling unusable, touchpad too sensitive

2017-10-24 Thread Chris Cowan
I just updated my macbook air (2013) from Ubuntu 16.04 to 17.10, and the
touchpad scrolling is way too sensitive. All instructions I find seem to
be X-specific and involving editing X config files. `xinput list`
doesn't mention any touchpads like any examples I can find online.

[Bug 1570132] [NEW] 16.04 beta Couldn't log in after today's update

2016-04-13 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04 beta had some updates today. I installed the updates,
rebooted, and logging in would never complete. When I logged in, my
desktop would appear, but the dash, launcher, and titlebar would never
appear. The problem resembled the issue reported here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/476930/ubuntu-desktop-does-not-load . I
was able to right-click on the desktop and open a terminal (which was
missing a titlebar).

I was able to work around the problem by running

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
gnome-session-quit --force

and then logging in again.

However, before I did that, I dumped all of my current dconf settings to
a text file first. I've attached the text file dump of the /org/compiz
dconf keys that caused the problem.

Here's the diff between my old problematic dconf settings and the new
ones after I reset them and logged in again. I would guess that the
problem has to do with the plugins-with-set-keys or active-plugins
settings referring to things that were removed in the update.

2016-04-02 Thread Chris Cowan
I'm unable to connect to VPNs at all because of this. They don't show up
in the VPN Connections menu. The VPN Connections menu only shows
"Configure VPN..." and the grayed out "Disconnect VPN". Clicking
"Configure VPN..." or "Edit Connections..." brings up the window showing
that my VPN connection configs do exist.

[Bug 1471634] [NEW] After suspend/resume, screen brightness can only be switched between 0 and 100%

2015-07-05 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

I have the same issue as described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1197482. I have a
macbook running Ubuntu 15.04, and if I suspend and then unsuspend, then
my screen turns off when I set the brightness to to below 85%ish (4
presses of the brightness down key from full), and it's at full
brightness when it's anywhere above that. Brightness controls work
perfectly fine after booting before I ever suspend.

[Bug 1404147] Re: Screen is stretched when using dual monitors

2015-04-26 Thread Chris Cowan
This still happens in a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04 with "NVIDIA
binary driver - version 346.59 from nvidia-346 (proprietary, tested)"
installed from the Ubuntu Additional Drivers tool.

Though I think I discovered a work-around. It seems like it only happens
later if my monitor was plugged when the login screen was open. If I
disconnect my monitor's HDMI cable, log out, log back in, and reconnect
the monitor, it seems to work fine for that session so far.

Is this being worked on? Are there any known workarounds? (Besides
switching to gnome-shell -- I ran into a bug there too!

I'm the only one I know in real life or among my online contacts that
doesn't use multiple monitors. It's especially frustrating since things
had went from working great to suddenly not working in a regular update
one day!

[Bug 1422608] [NEW] media keys don't work for several minutes

2015-02-17 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

When I log into Ubuntu, none of my media keys (volume up, down, mute,
play/pause, previous, next) work immediately. Instead, they seem to
buffer up, and after a few minutes they all trigger at once. Sometimes
this buffering behavior occurrs at random later times too.

[Bug 1401591] Re: package nvidia-331 331.113-0ubuntu0.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 8

2014-12-17 Thread Chris Cowan
On my machine (Ubuntu 14.10), dpkg's output at the end goes a bit
differently:

DEBUG:Parsing /usr/share/ubuntu-drivers-common/quirks/put_your_quirks_here
stop: Unknown job: nvidia-persistenced
userdel: user nvidia-persistenced is currently used by process 2035
dpkg: error processing package nvidia-331 (--remove):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 8
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.19-10ubuntu2.1) ...
Processing triggers for man-db (2.7.0.2-2) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 nvidia-331
Log ended: 2014-12-17 22:12:31

The difference from OP is the "stop: Unknown job: nvidia-persistenced"
line. My machine has no such job nvidia-persistenced, but it does have a
user and a process running by that name. (OP's log shows "stop: Unknown
instance: ", which indicates there was a job by that name, but it wasn't
currently running.)

The issue appears to be because of this part in nvidia-331's postrm:

# Remove the nvidia-persistenced user
if id "$NVPD_USER" > /dev/null 2>&1; then
stop nvidia-persistenced || true
userdel "$NVPD_USER"
fi

On my machine, there is no such job "nvidia-persistenced". It fails to
stop that job and continues, but my machine does have a nvidia-
persistenced process running, so the following userdel line fails and
causes the package uninstallation to abort. The correct way to stop
nvidia-persistenced appears to be "/usr/bin/stop-nvidia-persistenced",
but that file is already removed by the time that nvidia-331's postrm is
run. The "stop nvidia-persistenced || true" line should be removed, and
"/usr/bin/stop-nvidia-persistenced" should be added to prerm's remove)
section. I just tested that on my local machine and saw that change
makes removing the package work correctly.

[Bug 1388043] [NEW] /etc/mailname no longer used for outgoing message domain

2014-10-31 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

I've recently been setting up a new server using Ubuntu 14.04 to replace
a 12.04 server, and found if not a bug, then at least a breaking change
that doesn't seem to match up intuitively with the documentation.

Both servers have postfix installed. (12.04 has 2.9.6, and 14.04 has
2.11.1, as reported by postconf mail_version.) Each have a hostname
unrelated to their FQDN. On the 12.04 server, sending mail with the
`mail` utility sends the messages as $user@$fqdn correctly. On the 14.04
server, sending mail with the `mail` utility sends the messages as
$user@$hostname instead. There don't appear to be any differences in how
they're configured. Even if I copy the whole /etc/postfix folder from
the 12.04 server to the 14.04 server and restart postfix, the issue
persists.

To make sure I'm not crazy, I tested against new 12.04 and 14.04 VMs
(using vagrant, which made it quick to test). Here are my notes. Please
tell me if there's something I'm doing wrong or overlooking.

#For 12.04
vagrant init hashicorp/precise64
#For 14.04 instead
vagrant init ubuntu/trusty64

# Connect to the new VM
vagrant up
vagrant ssh

# Now inside the VM
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install postfix mailutils
# Pick option when presented
# Enter the fqdn of "blahblah.org"

# Note that the following has the machine's original hostname:
hostname
# and this has "blahblah.org":
cat /etc/mailname

# Run
echo a | mail a...@example.com

# Now check the logs to see who the email was sent as.
# On 12.04, this will give results as expected:
sudo fgrep "$u...@blahblah.org" /var/log/syslog
# On 14.04, this one will give results instead:
sudo fgrep "$USER@$(hostname)" /var/log/syslog

[Bug 30378] Re: Joystick activity does not stop the screensaver

2013-09-26 Thread Chris Cowan
I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, and each of the Steam for Linux games I've played
that support gamepads don't seem to inhibit the screensaver themselves.
I don't know if it's realistic to expect them to all patch to deal with
this themselves, and I'm not sure the responsibility should be on them.

[Bug 876273] [NEW] Banshee won't sync my music with my Sansa Clip+

2011-10-17 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to 11.10 the other day, and decided to try out the Banshee
media player as it seems to be the default. (Used to use Rhythmbox,
which worked pretty well.) When I plug in my Sansa Clip+, Nautilus opens
it up like a flash drive as it usually does (with the media player
icon), and it's detected by Banshee as "Rockbox Device". I have Rockbox
on it, however, Rockbox currently doesn't support USB mode on the Clip+,
so I always have it booted in the original Clip+ firmware when I have it
hooked to my computer.

Banshee lets me see the music I have on it, and I can play music from it
fine, however if I set it so I sync my entire music collection to it,
and then hit sync, a little progress bar appears at the bottom right of
the screen going back and forth, never accomplishing anything. There's a
red X button near the progress bar, and if I hit it, I get "This
operation is still performing work. Would you like to stop it?" with
Continue and Stop buttons. If I hit stop, it will say "Stopping..."
above the progress bar, and the red X will become greyed out, but
nothing ever changes after that. I can hit the disconnect button to
eject my media player, and that works successfully, but the progress bar
still sits there saying "Stopping...".

If I try to close Banshee while the progress bar is still going back and
forth, I get this window: http://i.imgur.com/XNyOJ.png

2010-08-29 Thread Chris Cowan
(10.04) I'm having a similar bug with a PPTP VPN. It works fine until I
try to set it to be Available to all users. I assume this is because the
password isn't in the connection's file under /etc/NetworkManager
/system-connections, and it's only in my user's keyring. Adding
"password=xxx" or "pass=xxx" to the connection's file didn't work, only
got me an error saying those parameters are unsupported.

[Bug 569292] [NEW] opiepasswd does not always generate valid seeds

2010-04-23 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

After installing the opie-client, opie-server, and libopie-pam packages,
and making the apparently needed edits to /etc/ssh/sshd_config and
/etc/pam.d/ssh, I go on to set it up for my user.

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Adding chris:
You need the response from an OTP generator.
New secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 499 co5482
Response: YEA ORE GIRL GLIB MOS BOIL

ID chris OTP key is 499 co5482
YEA ORE GIRL GLIB MOS BOIL

I test it, and it works fine for ssh. Great! But I used a lame
passphrase, and figure I want to change to a stronger one.

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Updating chris:
You need the response from an OTP generator.
Old secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 497 co5482 ext
Response: CRUD TEAM COL WENT WAKE LEA
New secret pass phrase:
otp-md5 499 co54
Response:

Er, that seed doesn't look very good or original. And it doesn't work
for opiekey/otp-md5:

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ otp-md5 499 co54
Using the MD5 algorithm to compute response.
Seeds must be greater than 5 characters long.

Trying to change my opie password again has the same thing happen. I
have to use the -s option to set a longer seed manually to fix this.

I've repeated this process several times (running "opiepasswd" after
setting a new one), and the new seed is always the old one truncated
(co, co1, co14, etc), or sometimes it even seems to fail at truncating
the old seed, and tries to reuse the old seed, causing it to give an
error:

ch...@cowan-laptop:~$ opiepasswd
Updating chris:
You must use a different seed for the new OTP sequence.

[Bug 258935] Re: program freezes when changing the volume with multimedia keys.. also once it loses the audio control it is horrible at reclaiming it

2009-12-19 Thread Chris Cowan
I'm suddenly having major issues with this bug. Rhythmbox is completely
unusable with this. It freezes for about 30 seconds at a time when I use
my volume controls, and about half of my open windows freeze with it. I
just logged out, logged in, tested with rhythmbox being the only thing
running, and it still does this.

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, amd64, with rhythmbox 0.12.5 (and its dbg packages).
I've attached the resulting file after I ran "rhythmbox -d 2>&1 | tee
rhythmbox-freeze.txt" (and removed the thousands of lines where it
decided to list every single one of my songs). At the top of the file, I
noted the four times that rhythmbox stopped responding (it's pretty much
every time the log skips more than 10 seconds).

The line

[0xa01040] [window_focus_cb] rb-mmkeys-plugin.c:142: window got
focus, re-grabbing media keys

is always the last thing that shows up on the terminal when rhythmbox
freezes. The line appears every time I press a media key (including the
volume key), but doesn't always cause rhythmbox to freeze.

[Bug 32457] Re: gnome-screensaver activates while playing SDL games

2009-09-22 Thread Chris Cowan
I just noticed today that this problem also shows up while using
KVM/QEMU (current kvm package from ubuntu reps). While running a
virtualized system that has control of the mouse, the screensaver
doesn't notice any keypresses or mouse input as long as the mouse is
grabbed by KVM's SDL window, and starts after 5 minutes. It at least
detaches the mouse at the same time properly, so if you move the mouse
quickly you can cancel it and click back to KVM. Pretty annoying,
especially if I'm in the middle of a task in the VM.

[Bug 304958] Re: Network manager handles teredo interface inappropriately

2009-09-03 Thread Chris Cowan
Pedro: I don't think that would help. This bug is a problem with Miredo
(missing automatic reloading when the network is changed) and is solved
as far as I can tell by the script I've posted in post #9.
NetworkManager is not at fault here.

This bug is set to expire soon, some action needs to be done. I think
all that's left is to just integrate the script to the upstream debian
package and get it to the ubuntu package too. Should a bug report be
posted there along with a link to here and the script?

[Bug 32457] Re: gnome-screensaver activates while playing SDL games with compiz enabled

2009-08-19 Thread Chris Cowan
I've noticed a similar problem lately (it's not a new problem, just
quantified it now) with other games (besides UT2k4 as I mentioned).
UT2k4 never likes to let go of the mouse, but several other games I've
played (Quake 3, zdoom; both open source) will release the mouse on
certain events it doesn't need it, like when the game's console is open.
With these games, instead of the keys not responding temporarily and the
mouse getting screwed up by gnome-screensaver after some time (like
UT2k4), the mouse simply detaches from the game (Zdoom even detects this
and pauses the game for you, presumably because it notices it has lost
focus). Click on the game window does not fix it and reattach mouse
control. I have to click a different window (or my desktop background;
If I'm in fullscreen, I'm out of luck, and I have to ctrl-alt-f1, log
in, and kill the game). And selecting a different window doesn't even
work the first time, I have to click several times before it does, then
I can click back to the game to make it active again.

Bugs like this (and the lack of a fix) make me feel like the only gamer who has
touched Ubuntu with anything shorter than a 10 ft pole sometimes. This bug and
the inability to use volume controls while a game has mouse control are
literally the only two major problems I have with Ubuntu.

[Bug 304958] Re: Network manager handles teredo interface inappropriately

2009-08-18 Thread Chris Cowan
Oh, I hadn't stopped to think that an IPv6 interface could trigger the
reload script. (Could the interface that miredo brings up trigger it?
Would that cause it to go down and up again? I'd assume not as my system
has been pretty stable, but is still worrying.)

I've attached a new version of the script that does not reload miredo
when it is an ipv6 interface coming up, which works fine.

[Bug 397184] [NEW] KVM title bar reads as "QEMU" instead of "QEMU/QEMU" even with hw support

2009-07-08 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

I'm running KVM, and many tutorials I see mention that if the hardware
virtualization features and the kvm module are used, the title bar
should read "QEMU/KVM" instead of just "QEMU".

Running "egrep -o '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo" outputs "vmx" twice.
Running "groups" shows that I am in the kvm group. In my BIOS,
virtualization processor extensions are enabled.

If I remove my user from the kvm group (and log out / back in) or
disable the virtualization extensions in the BIOS, kvm runs noticeably
slower, so I'm convinced that it normally is using the hardware
features, but the title bar still reads as just "QEMU".

Is the title bar not supposed to change? And are there any other ways to
check that it really is using the hardware virtualization features?

I'm in Ubuntu 9.04, using kvm version 0.9.1 (kvm-84) from the repository.

[Bug 366699] Re: LG cell phone mass storage connection hangs usb (it worked great in intrepid)

2009-06-30 Thread Chris Cowan
I just got a voyager, which shows up in lsusb as "LG Electronics, Inc.
VX4400/VX6000 Cellphone", that doesn't show up otherwise in Jaunty when
connected.

[Bug 338489] Re: AllowDeactivateGrabs is broken

2009-06-21 Thread Chris Cowan
I've been trying to find a way to allow the mouse to be released from a
program (UT2004) so that way I could do other things (answer IMs, browse
internet) and switch back to the game later without exiting it. I heard
this feature could let me do this easily, but then I find that the
feature has been removed.

[Bug 32457] Re: gnome-screensaver activates while playing SDL games with compiz enabled

2009-06-20 Thread Chris Cowan
I've had this problem since 8.04 (maybe as far back as 7.10, fuzzy on
memory) with UT2004 and other games, exactly as ToastyX and others
described. Still have this problem in 9.04.

I found if I use Metacity instead while playing, I have no problems
(alt-f2, "metacity --replace").

Is there any progress on this being fixed?

[Bug 388197] [NEW] -net socket,listen... segfaults

2009-06-16 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

I'm trying to get two virtual machines on the same vlan, looking at directions
from http://www.gnome.org/~markmc/qemu-networking.html .
When I use this command:
"kvm -cdrom ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso -net nic -net socket,listen=:8010"
I just get "Segmentation fault".

If I try to make it listen on a port that's in use or a privileged port, I get
a sensible error instead as expected:
 bind: Permission denied
 Could not initialize device 'socket'

I'm using kvm package version 1:84+dfsg-0ubuntu12 in Ubuntu 9.04.

[Bug 304958] Re: Network manager handles teredo interface inappropriately

2009-05-22 Thread Chris Cowan
Here's a script which fixes the problem, by reloading miredo automatically
whenever a network interface comes up. Just placing it inside
/etc/network/if-up.d does the trick. I think it would be good to include this
in the miredo package.
The script is based off of the script used by OpenSSH, with a small work-around
added so it can work with a glitch in NetworkManager.

** Attachment added: "Reload Miredo automatically. Should go in
/etc/network/if-up.d/"

[Bug 304958] Re: Network manager handles teredo interface inappropriately

2009-05-22 Thread Chris Cowan
Miredo should restart whenever the networking interface comes up. The
OpenSSH-server package does this by putting a script inside
"/etc/network/if-up.d", and I believe doing the same thing for Miredo
would make Miredo restart as needed automatically.

[Bug 350743] [NEW] url escape codes not recognized correctly in host

2009-03-28 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox version 3.0.8

EDIT: Shorter version.
If you click this link: http://%E2%9E%A1.ws/%E3%AD%8E : Firefox will say it
couldn't find the server. If you click in the address bar, and press enter, it
will load the page correctly.

ORIGINAL:
I've got a short unicode-heavy URL - http://➡.ws/㭎 . (This URL was generated by
http://www.tinyarro.ws - it's a similar idea to tinyurls.com, just a lot
shorter. Btw this one just links to a funny article at TheOnion.)

I noticed when I linked to it, if I highlighted it and viewed the
selection source, it would say href="http://%E2%9E%A1.ws/%E3%AD%8E";. But
if I simply right-clicked anywhere else and viewed page source, it would
be href="http://➡.ws/㭎"; as it was originally.

I noticed if you copy+pasted "http://%E2%9E%A1.ws/%E3%AD%8E"; into the
address bar, Firefox would say that the URL wasn't found. Pressing enter
a second time would bring you to the page correctly.

That doesn't seem like a serious problem, but then I tried making the
original URL a link on a WordPress website. Apparently WordPress parsed
the link before serving Firefox the html - when I viewed the page
source, it would say href="http://%e2%9e%a1.ws/%E3%AD%8E";. If I clicked
the link, I'd have the same problem as I had before when I copy-pasted
the escaped code into the URL. It would only recognize it the second
time.

[Bug 347083] [NEW] Routine Check of Drives message does not go away until system is booted up

2009-03-22 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

During boot-up, my machine did the "Routine check of drives: /dev/sdb1,
press ESC to skip" thing. The main boot progress bar stopped while it
did this step as it should. When it seemed the routine check finished,
and the boot-up bar continued, the "Routine check of drives:... press
ESC to skip" message still remained there erroneously.

[Bug 313085] Re: Screen lock goes away if flash drive plugged in

2009-01-03 Thread Chris Cowan
I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit, with the latest updates
(backports, proposted, etc are all enabled too). I also use Extra Effects
in System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects.

I'm suddenly having trouble reproducing this, so figuring this out
again...

Ok, I have some steps that seem to work every time for me. There might
be some unnecessary steps that I haven't tested enough to tell that they
aren't necessary, but there are also a few odd things that seem to be
required to get this to work. The order of these steps are important and
need to be repeated exactly.

1. Log out if you're already logged in. Log back in.
2. Start Firefox. Maximize it if its not already maximized.
3. Click Places>Computer.
4. Click on Firefox to bring it to focus.
5. Press ctrl+alt+L to lock the screen and do screensaver.
6. Press a button exit to the screensaver and show the password dialog.
7. Insert flash drive and wait about 5 seconds.
8. If nothing happens, type in your password and unlock the screen.
9. Close the newly opened window showing the flash drive's contents.
10. Go to the Computer window, right-click on the flash drive, and unmount it.
It's icon will change once its unmounted. Remove the flash drive from the
computer.
11. Click on Firefox again to bring it to focus.
12. Press ctrl+alt+L to lock the screen and do screensaver.
13. Press a button to exit the screensaver and show the password dialog.
14. Insert flash drive and wait about 5 seconds.
15. The bug I described should happen.

[Bug 313085] [NEW] Screen lock goes away if flash drive plugged in

2009-01-01 Thread Chris Cowan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Normally when I plug in my flash drive, nautilus opens it in a window.
If my screen is locked when I plug in my flash drive, the screen lock
disappears completely, showing my session as if it was unlocked, with the new
nautilus window on the task bar highlighted waiting to be clicked.

Except that the system doesn't respond to any normal inputs. I can't
click on anything or use my keyboard on any of the shown programs. I
have to either ctrl+alt+backspace, or ctrl+alt+f1, log in, and killall
gnome-screensaver to get the computer to do anything.

[Bug 37350] Re: Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver

2009-01-01 Thread Chris Cowan
If I press the power button while the screen is locked, the "Shutdown
the computer" menu comes up (but behind the screen lock - I have to
unlock the screen to see it). The bad part is that it informs me it will
log me off in 60 seconds, so that means that someone could log me off
right from the lock screen.

[Bug 191041] Re: [hardy] gnome-screensaver blocks multimedia keys

[Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2008-12-30 Thread Chris Cowan
This effects me in Intrepid with backports updates enabled. I'll be in
an online game, and suddenly I start lagging completely; its as if my
wireless stopped uploading - I can't move or talk, but I can still see
the game playing on without me for a bit of time. I'm not able to
reconnect, or browse the internet for some time when this happens,
unless I click the NetworkManager icon, and click my wireless network to
reconnect to it (it still thinks I'm connected to it though).

[Bug 264977] Re: Filenames in ~/.Private are not encrypted

2008-11-16 Thread Chris Cowan
Would a solution to this (I'd assume an implementation of a "one-user
crypted directory" like mentioned above) also encrypt directory names,
and directory structures? The organization and names of folders could be
stored inside a single encrypted file (that could even look no different
than other files in the ~/.Private directory).
