Ok. This would appear to be a ld bug. In a partially built tree, I get:

`std::__cxx11::basic_string, std::allocator
>::_M_create(unsigned long&, unsigned long)@GLIBCXX_3.4.21'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

This symbol, with correct version, is defined in libstdc++.so.6:
objdump -T -C /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 | rg
"std::__cxx11::basic_string, std::allocator
>::_M_create"
00146910 w DF .text 005c GLIBCXX_3.4.21
std::__cxx11::basic_string, std::allocator
>::_M_create(unsigned long&, unsigned long)

Adding -fuse-ld=gold or -fuse-ld=lld to the command line results in a
successful link.

It doesn't seem to be a problem of the /usr/bin/c++ driver failing to
add libstdc++ to the link args, as manually adding -lstdc++ to the end
of the command doesn't change the output.

[Bug 1957094] Re: on-demand mode doesn't work with nvidia-390

2022-02-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
For the nvidia-settings upload, the new wording looks somewhat strange:

++ " in on-demand mode (only if nvidia version >=
450; "
++ "otherwise, the behavior will approach to "
++ "performance mode). This option is applied
after "
++   "a system restart.");

Perhaps better wording would be something along the lines of “(only
using nvidia driver versions >= 450. On earlier drivers this behaves the
same as performance mode)”?

Also: is this a translatable string?

Alternatively: how hard would it be to *detect* the driver version, as
ubuntu-drivers-common does, and grey out the option?

[Bug 1957094] Re: on-demand mode doesn't work with nvidia-390

2022-02-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello jeremyszu, or anyone else affected,

Accepted ubuntu-drivers-common into focal-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-drivers-
common/1:0.9.0~0.20.04.5 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

I've accepted this, but have amended the test plan to try and ensure
this doesn't change the behaviour on the -450 series drivers.

I'm not entirely sure what the "" check
should be. @Alberto, @Jeremy: Could you please replace that part of the
test-plan with the steps required to check that on-demand still works
for -450?

** Changed in: ubuntu-drivers-common (Ubuntu Impish)
   Status: Triaged => Fix Committed

** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-impish

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * In any Ubuntu series, if user using a old GPU (which supported by
nvidia-390 only) then issuing glxinfo will get "Error: couldn't find RGB
GLX visual or fbconfig". Which mean the Xorg doesn't load dri driver
  correctly.

  [Test Plan]

   * install nvidia-390 on nvidia-390 supported system.
   * prime-select on-demand
   * reboot
   * glxinfo
   * after applying this patch, it will fall back to "ON" mode after reboot.

+ * install nvidia-450 on nvidia-450 supported system.
+ * prime-select on-demand
+ *
+
  [Where problems could occur]
   * Since nvidia-390 doesn't support on-demand mode (RTD3 either). If a user
stays in on-demand mode with 390 without problem, the after upgrading u-d-c and
reboot. The mode will fall back to "ON" mode.
   * From my point of view, it's fine because nvidia-390 doesn't support RTD3.
Thus, the nvidia will always stay in "Active" stage no matter which mode it is.
  * While there is no way to inform the user about this change, changing to the
only supported default will avoid breaking GLX.
-

  ---

  The regression from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
  drivers-common/+bug/1942789.

It impacts Jammy and Impish so far.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Find a GPU supports nvidia-390
  2. ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:390
  3. prime-select on-demand
  4. glxinfo

  [Expected result]
Shows intel or nvidia drives monitor

  [Actual result]
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Since we are all agree "on-demand" mode as default mode.
Pre-talk with Alberto, on-demand doesn't support with nvidia-390 (no matter
RTD3).
We could consider to make it as performance mode and leave a note on
nvidia-settings.
  I'll prepare some test packages.

[Bug 1958620] Re: Flickering white/black screen once KMS comes up

2022-01-24 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
There is no scanout hardware connected to the AMD GPU, so if there is
any involvement by amdgpu it is purely by making i915 misbehave.

This is also not a GNOME bug - the display corrupts as soon as the KMS
driver is loaded, which, since I've got an encrypted rootfs, is early in
the initramfs. The same behaviour is observed regardless of the kernel
commandline options, too, so it's not plymouth doing something weird, or
vthandoff. It also happens with break=mount.

[Bug 1958806] [NEW] Fails to include libgcc, resulting in cryptsetup failures

2022-01-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

I recently rebooted my laptop, and couldn't unlock my (cryptsetup-
managed) root filesystem; after entering my passphrase, the plymouth
prompt would always say “unable to unlock /dev/nvme0n1p3_crypt”.

Dropping to text mode, I can see that cryptsetup is failing with a message like:
"libgcc_s: missing library, needed for pthread_exit”.

Indeed, in the recovery console cryptsetup will immediately crash with
that message.

I note that initramfs-tools already has some logic for detecting when
libgcc_s is needed but isn't in DT_NEEDED, but this seems to have gone
out of date.

Adding an initramfs hook to manually add libgcc_s to the initramfs
results in a bootable system again.

I don't reboot this laptop often, so I unfortunately can't narrow down
*when* this started failing better than “sometime in the last 2 months”.

[Bug 1958620] [NEW] Flickering white/black screen once KMS comes up

2022-01-20 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

This looks like a regression from the 5.13.0-20-generic kernel to the
5.15.0-17-generic kernel. The display works fine under efifb, but as
soon as the DRM drivers are loaded and KMS kicks in the display is
replaced by black with flickering white (apparently when what would be
on the output changes).

[Bug 1958235] Re: auto-synced transition to 0.29.0.gfm.2-1 left various packages behind broken

2022-01-18 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Huh.

Looks like cmark-gfm has already migrated out of jammy-proposed. I don't
think we can roll back anymore, and will need to go forward instead.

I think the way forward would be to upload a
0.29.0.gfm.2.really.0.29.0.gfm.0-like package containing the old
package, to build a working libcmark-gfm0, and *then* upload (or sync) a
package with a proper transition.

Maybe the unbreaking package should be versioned
0.29.0.gfm.2-1ubuntu.really.0.29.0.gfm.0 so that versioning can stay in
sync with a fixed Debian package?

[Bug 1952421] Re: Issue on sshd finds correct private key for a certificate when using ssh-agent

2022-01-04 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
For SRU verification we require that the actual package from the
-proposed archive is tested. This is to avoid the chance that the patch
is mis-applied in the package uploaded to the archive, or that the
archive build environment differs in a way that affects the patch.

We'll also need this to be verified for Hirsute and Impish before we can
release it for Focal, to ensure that upgrades do not regress this bug.

[Bug 1942789] Re: On-demand and RTD3 need to be separated

So, I think the next step here is to work out how to answer the question
“what happens with -390”, and to commit to *testing* what happens with
-390 as a part of the test plan.

[Bug 1948764] Re: Fail to pass suspend/resume test

2021-12-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I think we're talking past each other again.

I believe you when you say that this update will not cause a regression
for users of the Xilinx desktop image who have not edited the
configuration in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

The issue we, on the SRU team, are concerned about are the two caveats there:
1) Users of the *Xilinx desktop image*, and
2) Who haven't edited the configuration.

The xf86-video-armsoc-endlessm package is in the Ubuntu archive, not
just the Xilinx images, and the guarantees we try to provide for
packages in the archive is that updates will not break anything that
currently works.

My understanding is that, currently, a user of a Xilinx board could have
built their own images from packages in the Ubuntu archive and not
include the metapackage containing the /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
configuration, and this would work.

Also, a user of the Xilinx image who chose to edit
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config and remove “needs_root_rights = yes” would
currently have a working system.

My understanding is that this update would result in both of the above
cases failing to work. *This* is what we are concerned about.

It's possible that we need a dedicated policy for volatile hardware-
enablement packages like this, both so that we can process them more
quickly for you and so that users are made aware that these specific
packages do not have the usual stability guarantees associated with the
Ubuntu archive. If that seems like a good idea, the next step on that
would probably be to start a discussion on ubuntu-devel@.

[Bug 1948764] Re: Fail to pass suspend/resume test

2021-12-02 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
It seems to me that there's no reason why a user of this package couldn't have
either:
a) changed the configuration in /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config to not require root -
my understanding is that with the current package that would work, or
b) Built a custom image using this package that did not contain the
/etc/X11/Xwrapper.conf

If either of those are plausible, then when they pull updates and
upgrade to this new package, their systems will break.

Is there any ballpark estimate for how hard it would be to fix the
suspend issue *without* regressing the run-as-not-root case?

Checking
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/877172e07ed9f86b0674cd458a5aaf24b37fb01e
I see that there are no reports of this for 1:15.0+dfsg1-1ubuntu2.1 in
Impish and, reassuringly, no reports of this for 1:15.0+dfsg1-1ubuntu3
in Jammy, either.

I think that's sufficient to mark this as verified.

[Bug 1952083] Re: Add support for Beige Goby

2021-11-25 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted mesa into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/21.0.3-0ubuntu0.3~20.04.5 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

[Bug 1951033] Re: 20.04 SRU

2021-11-25 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Expanding on (5): we've had problems in the past with glibc and
graphical snaps on core due to the way the host's userspace drivers are
mapped into the snap environment, and so are loaded with the snap's
glibc. We should check that runs successfully with
the core20 built from focal-proposed, on mesa-supported hardware, an
NVIDIA system, (and maybe an AMD system with the proprietary stack
installed? I don't know how supported we claim that is). We *might* want
to test running using the focal-proposed core20 on
all supported drivers and all supported releases (so, 18.04, 20.04,
21.10).

[Bug 1949553] Re: Backport packages for 20.04.4 HWE stack

2021-11-23 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
@Timo: I notice the libdrm backport drops the valgrind integration. I
know it's disabled in (at least) impish, but is there any particular
reason for it to be disabled in the focal backport?

It seems pretty unlikely that anyone would notice, but the diff required
to keep the valgrind annotations enabled also looks small, so maybe we
should?

[Bug 1946096] Re: Support manual firmware upgrading for Foxconn and Quectel modems.

2021-10-26 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Ok. For clarity, my understanding of these patches are that they do the
following things:
1) Add a feature to ModemManager to support uploading firmware to these modems
2) Increase a timeout that was found to be insufficient when doing a firmware
update
3) Add a bunch of mappings from SIM->Carrier

And then in response to potential concerns:
(1) is a straight feature addition, and the associated code will only be called
if an external component connects to modemmanager requesting a firmware upload.
This is not expected to change any existing behaviours.
(2) is low-risk

It's not clear to me whether (3) is expected to change existing
behaviours at all.

Is this understanding correct?

Assuming (3) is not expected to change existing behaviour this looks
like it would be acceptable under the hardware-enablement SRU policy.

[Bug 1662620] Re: "ip addr add" permits illegal labels

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hm. It's not clear what the actual user impact of this is?

Reading from the original description, it seems that if a user uses an
invalid label to set one address and *also* uses a valid label to set
another address *then* tools can be confused?

“Our parser is actually more lenient than the manpage states” on its own
is definitely not SRU-worthy, but if it breaks other tools then maybe?

On the other hand, from the bug it looks like if you *don't* mix valid
and invalid labels then everything actually works? So this would
potentially be breaking currently working setups?

I think we need more information before determining whether this should
be accepted as an SRU.

[Bug 1782984] Re: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed with multiple applications

2021-10-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Has anyone tried PCManFM or Inkscape on focal? It seems that this update
doesn't fix GNOME Shell on focal, but *maybe* that's because Shell is
hitting a different bug?

If this can be verified to fix PCManFM, Inkscape, or something on focal
we can release it and open a new bug for GNOME Shell on Focal.

If this *doesn't* fix something on focal, we need to work out why -
maybe it needs more changes backported, like bionic did?

If FCManFM & Inkscape don't hang on focal *without* this update then I
think we can release the bionic update and close the focal task.

[Bug 1898601] Re: 'ubuntu-drivers --gpgpu install' installs a lot of unnecessary packages, including a full desktop environment on Ubuntu Server

2021-09-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I see there is a new upload of ubuntu-drivers-common fixing this bug in
bionic-unapproved. The last version sat in bionic-proposed for 105 days
without being verified for release into bionic-updates.

The package in bionic-unapproved looks fine to accept, but is there
someone in charge of organising testing for it?

[Bug 1782984] Re: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed with multiple applications

2021-09-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
That seems like we should be able to extract a verification from the
errors.ubuntu.com results. Is it possible to query crashes with a
specific dependency version? Seeing no crash reports with libx11
2:1.6.9-2ubuntu1.3 would suggest this is fixed.

On the other hand,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libx11/+bug/1782984/comments/110
suggests that this may *not* be fixed in focal.

[Bug 1940485] Re: thermald often limits CPU frequency while on AC

2021-09-13 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I've run that debugging script. Unfortunately, Launchpad currently
OOPSes when I try to attach the output to the bug. I'll keep trying
every now and then.

The throttling did not occur during that test, and doesn't seem to have
occurred while running the build of thermald from git, but this does not
necessarily mean the bug doesn't still occur.

I'll continue running the build of thermald from git. Should I catch it
in the bug-state, I'll re-collect the output of that script.
