[Bug 2065791] Re: incorrect screen resolution in wayland session

2024-06-07 Thread Chris Hermansen
Just to mention that the Wayland session continues to work with that
changed mentioned above and I am using mostly full time now, except for
one application (OnlyOffice). Working on their user forum to try to
sort this out.

[Bug 2065791] Re: incorrect screen resolution in wayland session

2024-05-27 Thread Chris Hermansen
John Kizer:

I installed libnvidia-egl-wayland1 versuib 1:1.1.13-1build1 from the
repositories, and not only does Settings now work, but I can also change
the screen resolution from the low-res 3840 X 1080 to the high-res value
5120 X 1440, and all seems to work just fine.

Thanks for sharing your theory!

If I see anything amiss I will report back.

[Bug 2060268] Re: Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver

2024-05-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
On 24.04 with NVIDIA GTX 3060 and Samsung 5120 X 1440 monitor, running
libnvidia 535.171.04-0ubuntu2

Following Per Overgaard's excellent instructive, the

> GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash
initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init”

solution works for me to eliminate the "ghost monitor".

[Bug 2065791] Re: incorrect screen resolution in wayland session

2024-05-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
Daniel:

Thanks for linking to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060268. Solved
my "ghost monitor" problem; I will report my experience on that bug.

Relative to the screen resolution - when I added the boot flag mentioned
there to /etc/default/grub, rebooted and logged into an X (not Wayland)
session, my screen was back to 3840 x 1080. However, when I went into
Settings and changed the resolution to 5120 X 1440, this time the screen
blanked briefly, then returned in the higher resolution and asked if I
wanted to keep the setting. I selected "yes" and I continue to have the
desired resolution as long I as I am using X.

However, logging into a Wayland session, my screen resolution is back to
3840 X 1080, and I still cannot run the Settings to try to change the
resolution (the Settings icon appears briefly in the dock, then
vanishes, and no apport is offered).

Another observation: looking at the GNOME login screen, I'm pretty sure
it's in 3840 X 1080 mode as well (or at least, not in the higher
resolution supported by this monitor), as the info on the screen appears
larger than I recall it from April in 23.10.

[Bug 2065791] Re: incorrect screen resolution in wayland session

2024-05-15 Thread Chris Hermansen
I thought to try adding a new user which would have fresh configuration
files. This new user experienced the same or very similar problems
(xorg session screen resolution seems fine, wayland session screen
resolution is ? X 1080).

On first login (which was an xorg session) the screen resolution was set
to 3840 x 1080. I used the Settings application to change it to 5120 X
1440. The resolution did not change at that point, but when I logged
out and logged back in again, it was at that point 5120 X 1440.

So I infer from this (perhaps wrongly) that the problem is not caused by
some crufty old configuration file.

Also, the Settings app reports two monitors for both users, when only
one is connected. Not sure why.

[Bug 2065791] [NEW] incorrect screen resolution in wayland session

2024-05-15 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

Running a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.06 (ie not an upgrade from 23.10).
Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 3060 with 5120 X 1440 Samsung
monitor. Configuration behaves as expected on xorg but switching to
Wayland on login gives display resolution at ? X 1080. Settings
application crashes under Wayland.

Until release of 24.06 this machine was running 23.10 which did not
exhibit this problem.

[Bug 1919255] Re: tracker-store crashed with signal 5

2021-07-22 Thread Chris Hermansen
This week I moved the contents of my ~/Music directory to a different
directory on a different physical drive mounted on /work, and I no
longer get this behaviour.

From that I surmise, perhaps incorrectly, that there was some situation
in my music files (almost all FLAC, a few MP3s) that was causing this
problem.

[Bug 1919255] Re: tracker-store crashed with signal 5

2021-04-28 Thread Chris Hermansen
More on this problem: as an attempted workaround, I have tried removing
.cache/tracker which does not seem to solve it.

I have considered removing the files in ~/.local/share/tracker/data but
haven't yet tried that.

2021-04-14 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

Today a Firefox update was pushed out for 21.04. Not sure if this
problem occurred with the update or before, but I just noticed it after
the update.

Using the Firefox hamburger menu, then selecting Customize toolbar... I
arrive at a tab titled Customize Firefox. In the lower left corner of
the screen is a checkbox for Titlebar.

If that checkbox is checked, the titlebar appears at the top of the
window, and below it are all the tabs.

If that checkbox is NOT checked, the titlebar remains visible but now
the window controls are duplicated on the tabs line (in my case to the
left as I have the window control position set to the left).

In previous versions of Firefox, it was nice to be able to turn off the
titlebar and have the controls move to the tabs line. And in any case,
two sets of active window controls, one beneath the other, is not
particularly useful.

Re: [Bug 1923390] Re: NVidia driver 460 doesn't work after updating to proposed kernel 5.11.0-14.15-generic

2021-04-13 Thread Chris Hermansen
Not at present. The problem went away immediately after running the apt
purge and then rebooting, and has not reoccurred since. So I'm not
suffering at all at this point. I reported it in case my situation
provided useful information for others.

Re: [Bug 1923390] Re: NVidia driver 460 doesn't work after updating to proposed kernel 5.11.0-14.15-generic

2021-04-13 Thread Chris Hermansen
Sorry I forgot to mention that...

After the boot where the screen resolution was messed up, I tried:

1. The recovery boot (nothing improved)
2. Installing the NVidia driver manually (terminated with error, no
improvement)
3. Apt purge (resolution back to 1920 x 1080, seemingly ok)

So just to be completely clear, the failed install of the NVidia driver
was an attempt to repair the problem that had already happened.

Again sorry for the confusion!

[Bug 1923390] Re: NVidia driver updates installed "manually" by system did not recognize my RTX 3060

2021-04-11 Thread Chris Hermansen
Daniel, I rebooted into 5.11.0-13.14 as you requested and everything
seems OK, display-wise at least. I also fired up Additional Drivers and
that seems to be in order (ie the official NVidia driver).

Anything else I can try for you?

[Bug 1923390] [NEW] NVidia driver updates installed "manually" by system did not recognize my RTX 3060

2021-04-11 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

Saturday night at about 03:00 UTC I noticed that an update to my system
(Hirsute / 21.04) would no longer properly work with my NVidia RTX 3060;
I was left in very low resolution mode. When I ran Additional Drivers,
the screen indicated that I had manually installed graphics drivers and
I could not select the official and tested NVidia drivers. I am
assuming these "manually" installed drivers were a part of a system
update as I did nothing to install any drivers on my own.

I found a suggestion to run "apt purge nvdia-\*", which I did. When I
rebooted, I was able to select the "Using NVIDIA driver metapackage from
nvidia-driver-460 (proprietary, tested), and my screen resolution and
general behaviour seemed fine from that point on.

In case it doesn't come through in the uploaded files, here are the
lines from /var/log/dpkg.log relating to my purge:

[Bug 1875994] Re: python syntax errors in __init__.py, core.py, temporal_algebra.py

2020-05-02 Thread Chris Hermansen
I looked at description of fixes at

https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/pull/540

and I don't see anything referring to the warnings.

However, looking at the first warning .../__init__.py:75, on my
computer, the offending line is

if value is '':

whereas the version on GitHub is

if value == '':

which I suppose would correct the warning, and surely must be the
intended code.

So let's hope the backport arrives soon!

Thanks to upstream for being all over this!

And please pardon my ignorance, but given that this appears to be
getting fixed in version 4.6, how will (or will) that make its way back

[Bug 1831928] [NEW] gnome planner crashes when resizing task description or editing task

2019-06-06 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

Using planner in Ubuntu 19.04 (first time in this release IIRC). The
application appears to start fine and allows many different kinds of
interaction (e.g. editing calendar, editing project properties) but
attempting to resize a task description or to use Edit>Task to enter a
task description crashes the application immediately.

Starting from the command line, here is a typical session:

clh@marseille:~$ planner

** (planner:5626): CRITICAL **: 10:43:02.915: mrp_time2_add_seconds: assertion

**
GLib-GObject:ERROR:../../../gobject/gobject.c:4453:g_weak_ref_set: assertion

Aborted
clh@marseille:~$

When I first started trying this earlier today, I also received a
message about missing libcanberra-gtk-module, so I installed that, which
required the installation of libcanberra-gtk0.

Note that libcanberra-gtk3-module and libcanberra-gtk3-0 were already
installed (perhaps by default?).

Finally, as best as I can recall, I had no such problems in 18.10 or
earlier. I can test on 18.04 if that helps.

Re: [Bug 1779907] Re: Object St.BoxLayout has been already deallocated - impossible to connect to signal.

2018-07-03 Thread Chris Hermansen
I don't have a problem with reporting this to the authors of the
openweather extension, but I guess I'm surprised the extension can cause
hundreds of error messages to be written to the syslog - seems like that
might be some sign of weakness in Gnome Shell... but I'm certainly no
expert.

[Bug 1779907] [NEW] Object St.BoxLayout has been already deallocated - impossible to connect to signal.

2018-07-03 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

On system boot, syslog is filled with messages of the form:

Object St.BoxLayout (0x55736a43df40), has been already deallocated -
impossible to connect to signal. This might be caused by the fact that
the object has been destroyed from C code using something such as
destroy(), dispose(), or remove() vfuncs

Object St.Label (0x55736a684930), has been already finalized. Impossible
to set any property to it.

followed by stack traces

followed by more messages of the form

Object St.Label (0x55736a684930), has been already finalized. Impossible
to set any property to it.

These seem to relate to specific resource:///... extensions such as
ubuntu-doc, openweather-extension, and so on.

There are also assertions that fail of the form

clutter_layout_manager_get_child_meta: assertion
'CLUTTER_IS_LAYOUT_MANAGER (manager)' failed

2017-10-19 Thread Chris Hermansen
I reported this separately as 1725030 but it is apparently a duplicate
of this.

I'm a bit surprised at that because this problem never occurred in 17.04
but did so the first time I plugged my phone into 17.10.

Anyway if anyone here needs more info, I'm your person.

Sorry pushed enter too soon. I can make the problem go away by changing
the line in mate-panel.rc from

class "GtkScrollbar"  style "murrine-scrollbar"

to

class "GtkScrollbar"  style "scrollbar"

which is what is shown e.g. here

[Bug 1687351] Re: Making GNOME really pleasant to use

2017-05-01 Thread Chris Hermansen
One of the main irritations I find with Gnome3 is that it takes up more
vertical space on a short/wide monitor than necessary, lessening the
amount of space I have to view my code or documents.

Unity does this nice thing where the top bar on the window hosts the
application menu; or when the application is maximized, the top panel on
the screen hosts the application menu as well as the identification
string. I consider this to be very graceful design, fully cognizant of
the vertical limitations of the short screen and considerate of the
user's need to see as much of their work as possible.

Gnome3 is not as considerate. The default (I guess, Adwaita theme?) is
to show a thick window top bar which provides little value for the space
it consumes. There are plugins that try to address this problem, by
(for example) hiding the top panel unless the mouse is near, merging the
menu with the top panel when the application is maximized, and moving
away from the traditional menu bar completely to a set of controls,
often placed at the upper right side of the screen.

If anyone who is bothered by the same "vertical waste" could offer their
solutions I think that would be great.

[Bug 1687351] Re: Making GNOME really pleasant to use

2017-05-01 Thread Chris Hermansen
I would like to offer a suggestion: perhaps people who are trying out
Gnome3 shell and finding it wanting in some respect could state briefly:

1. what task is to be accomplished;
2. how that is accomplished in Unity;
3. what seems to be missing or clunkier in Gnome3 shell;
4. what Gnome3 shell plugin(s) was(were) involved, if any.

I don't know if this bug report is the right place to be addressing this
kind of thing but accepting for the moment that it is...

For example @colin-law says he misses the HUD. I guess this means that
he misses pressing the "Ubuntu" key and seeing the files, applications
etc come up (although the same thing happens in Gnome3, more or less) or
the "search" bar (although IIRC there is a search function in Gnome3
shell). But these are just guesses and I'm not able to determine
whether I can help Colin with an alternative unless I know a bit more
about what he is trying to do with the HUD.

(Colin, by the way this is no criticism!)

Just getting ready to try out your kernel test. During the dpkg -i

dpkg: warning: downgrading linux-headers-4.10.0-20 from 4.10.0-20.22 to

and

Not updating initrd symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled

Among others. In any case, I'm proceeding with the testing now...

2017-04-21 Thread Chris Hermansen
@Ken Haase, here is what I do:

1. make sure you aren't running any proprietary drivers and if you are
and you can back them out (use the Software > Alternative Drivers tool
for this)

2. look back at the kernels @Joseph Salisbury has requested we test

https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-

files I used

3. Basically what I do is:
  a. download the relevant group of kernel files (above)
  b. into a subdirectory that contains nothing else
  c. install as sudo dpkg -i *.deb
  d. reboot with my finger on the left shift key to bring up the grub menu
  e. select the advanced options to get the kernel I want to test
  f. when booted check with uname -a
  g. run my tests

For what it's worth I confirm that the bug exists in 16.10 and the
patches described here work there as well.

[Bug 1633979] [NEW] gnome-terminal appears in launcher twice when running

2016-10-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.10, I have gnome-terminal in my launcher. When I start it,
I see two terminals in the launcher - one representing the running
terminal(s), one that allows me to open another terminal. No other
application seems to behave this way. I don't believe this behaviour
was evident in 16.04.

FWIW I have Ubuntu Tweak Tool also installed and I have selected
minimize single window applications on click (which works). Also this
was an upgrade from 16.04.

[Bug 1633162] Re: Files application throws an error 'Oops! Something went wrong' when clicked on 'Recents'

2016-10-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
My steps are similar to #4 above but the problem occurs when I am logged
in as regular user (me).

Seems to be no workaround.

FWIW my 16.10 is upgraded from 16.04 and not a fresh install.

[Bug 1514254] [NEW] Icon location in gtimelog.desktop incorrect

2015-11-08 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

The /usr/share/applications/gtimelog.desktop contains the following
line:

Icon=/usr/share/pyshared/gtimelog/gtimelog.png

The actual location of the gtimelog.png is
/usr/share/pixmaps/gtimelog.png and I confirm that there is no such
gtimelog/ subdirectory in /usr/share/pyshared

I don't know if this is a problem in the build script or the package.

I should mention that this is on a system upgraded from 15.04 to 15.10,
with gtimelog installed in 15.04

[Bug 1499746] Re: Early Syslinux Boot Error in pendrive made with the Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator

2015-09-25 Thread Chris Hermansen
I am the "another user" Nio mentions above. To confirm, in my case the
bug appeared two days ago when attempting a 64 bit 15.10 startup disk
under 64 bit 15.04. I attempted this process on three different USB
devices: a Transcend 16Gb, a SanDisk Cruzer 4Gb and a Lexar USB Card
Reader with a Transcend 4Gb Micro SDHC card in it.

There were no error messages during the usb-creator-gtk session, just an
unbootable USB stick as a result.

I should mention that I had to erase the sticks with the Ubuntu "disks"
utility as the "erase disk" function in usb-creator-gtk would not clear
the drive for me, giving me the message:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Python.GLib.Error: Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/dbus/service.py", line 707, in
_message_cb
retval = candidate_method(self, *args, **keywords)
File "/usr/share/usb-creator/usb-creator-helper", line 275, in Format
block.call_format_sync('vfat', GLib.Variant('a{sv}', {'label':
GLib.Variant('s', '')}), None)
GLib.Error: udisks-error-quark:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Error.Failed: Error synchronizing after
initial wipe: Timed out waiting for object (0)

The "disks" utility has no problem formatting my usb sticks; usb-
creator-gtk shows no errors (as I noted above) installing the system on
the drive so formatted.

Also I was able to create a working boot disk on the Transcend 16Gb
using unetbootin.

[Bug 1499746] Re: Early Syslinux Boot Error in pendrive made with the Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator

2015-09-25 Thread Chris Hermansen
One more comment.

I *CAN* make a working ie bootable 15.04 USB stick with usb-creator on
the same platform. It seems that the problem, for me at least, is in
creating a working 15.10 USB stick.

[Bug 1495136] Re: System hard froze, kernel bug reported in syslog

2015-09-18 Thread Chris Hermansen
Christopher, good afternoon and thank you for your testing instructions.

Since the crash reported in this bug, I have not had another such
problem. I cannot find similar error messages in the syslog file.

So I am wondering what to do. I can certainly test the kernels as you
suggest, but since the problem does not regularly occur (6 days since
the last occurrence, computer under heavy and similar use all of those
days), I'm not sure what to do.

Any suggestions?

I won't be able to respond to comments until 20 Sep as I am
travelling...

[Bug 1444110]

2015-05-11 Thread Chris Hermansen
(In reply to Eike Rathke from comment #7)
 @Chris:
I did what you described, sorting only on entire selected column U.

Thanks, @Eike. I look forward to testing the patch.

[Bug 1422004] Re: pkservice.py crashed with AttributeError in __init__(): 'module' object has no attribute 'MainLoop'

2015-05-08 Thread Chris Hermansen
Thanks to all for getting this patch in place.

The bug appears to be resolved.

A few comments:

I installed hplip-3.15.4.run as per the conversation above with
TomasHynk. When this fix was released, I wanted to uninstall what
hplip-3.15.4 installed and revert to the standard Ubuntu stack.

This http://hplipopensource.com/node/188 explains how to uninstall.

I followed it exactly and then reinstalled hplip via synaptic. However
it seems that the files in /usr/share/hplip and /etc/hp were removed by
the uninstall process given above and not re-installed by synaptic.

So I reinstalled hplip-3.15.4, made sure everything was working, then
deleted my two printers, uninstalled it again as per the instructions
above EXCEPT I did not do the sudo rm's, and then installed hplip via
apt-get. But hp-setup does report that it is ver. 3.15.2 so I am most
of the way there.

As I said, things now seem to be working, though I'm not completely
convinced I have fully reverted!

Thanks again to Till and others who got the show back on the road.

TomasHynk, more on that last:

After a reboot I can successfully add that M1212nf printer... hmm.

However, when I log in I still get the error associated with this bug,
even though hp-setup run from the command line seems fine.

[Bug 1422004] Re: pkservice.py crashed with AttributeError in __init__(): 'module' object has no attribute 'MainLoop'

2015-05-03 Thread Chris Hermansen
TomasHynk, thanks for the suggestion.

I have run that file hplip-3.15.4.run and it appears to install OK (no
error messages).

As well it manages to set up my HP 1102w.

However it fails to setup my HP M1212nf MFP with the following message:

error: Printer queue setup failed. Error : successful-ok-ignored-or-
substituted-attributes

So I guess you can say it's a partial work-around...

I have filed a question on the HPLIP launchpad project about that.

[Bug 1444110]

2015-04-30 Thread Chris Hermansen
Hi Eike,

I'm the person who reported the bug.

Would you be so kind as to confirm that when you say I tried on Fedora
21 with master dbgutil build and current 4-4 (to be 4.4.4) and 4.4.3,
but could not reproduce you mean using the file I uploaded and sorted
only on column U?

The reason I ask is that when I originally reported this on Launchpad,
the person triaging bugs could not reproduce it until I sent the actual
data and instructions.

Thanks very much! And my apologies in advance if this is a dumb
question!

[Bug 1444110] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in ScDocShell::AdjustRowHeight()

2015-04-17 Thread Chris Hermansen
Good morning, Christopher Penalver,

I just confirmed that I can cause this problem at will. Here are the
steps:

Open Libre Office Calc.

Select the file I included, NEWMAST_core_5e_crashed_sort.ods, from
Recent Documents

FileRecent DocumentsNEWMAST_core_5e_crashed_sort.ods

The file appears to open just fine.

Select column U by clicking in the U column header; in the status panel
at the bottom of Libre Calc you should see

Selected 1048576 rows, 1 column

Sort the column itself

DataSort...

Up comes a panel that suggests you can extend the selection or use the
current selection. Click Current Selection.

Up comes a panel that offers various sorting options; leave as is and
click Ok.

Libre Calc crashes. This can be confirmed by restarting Libre Calc
which offers to recover from a crash on that document, and it recovers
successfully.

Apport is automatically triggered which filed this bug report in the
first instance.

Note that normally one would want to sort the entire sheet by one or
more columns, but in this application I am just sorting the column to
look for non-blank data and I will Undo the sort subsequently.

[Bug 1444110] [NEW] soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in ScDocShell::AdjustRowHeight()

2015-04-14 Thread Chris Hermansen
Public bug reported:

I had a large spreadsheet (33663 rows X 33 columns) loaded and wanted to
sort one of the columns that I suspected was all blank. I selected the
column, did a sort just on it. When I came back later, scalc had
disappeared and apport was up.

The spreadsheet recovered automatically.

[Bug 1422004] Re: pkservice.py crashed with AttributeError in __init__(): 'module' object has no attribute 'MainLoop'

2015-03-31 Thread Chris Hermansen
Denys, the info at the link you provide seems to relate more to running
the gui hp-setup; or am I missing something?

This bug affects me as something - cups? I dunno - is running hp-
setup automagically and behind the scenes.

I have tried running hp-setup -i from the command line. When I use it
to attempt to install my laserjet P1102w, I get as far as starting the
download for the plugin, and then this happens:

Creating directory plugin_tmp
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing HPLIP 3.15.2 Plugin Self Extracting
Archive...
Error importing HPLIP modules. Is HPLIP installed?
error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed

Done.

The same thing appears to happen when I try to install my other
laserjet, an M1212nf_MFP.

I have looked for the string error: Python gobject/dbus may be not
installed on Google. It seems that this may arise when Python 3 is the
default, but running python -V from the command line tells me that the
default on my system is 2.7.9.

This link https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600360
suggests that I may be missing package python-gobject.

Looking in Synaptic, I see I have both python-gobject and python-
gobject2 installed.

Is it possible that somehow the new Python3 gobject is interfering with
hp-setup? I don't feel great about the idea of removing python-gobject
to find out...

Willing to experiment here if anyone has any ideas... and as Shahar Or
mentions, there is no printing happening here at this time...

[Bug 1401609] Re: gmusicbrowser crashed with SIGSEGV in emission_find()

2015-03-30 Thread Chris Hermansen
Apparently this is the same bug as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gmusicbrowser/+bug/1401609
which I find a bit odd because the latter occurs in a different place in
the code than this one. But anyway...

I have been using gmusicbrowser a bit today and I haven't had the crash.

I *think* I may have caused it by double-clicking the (X) button.

[Bug 1325801] Re: failed to boot from USB disk with error: gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R Image boot:

2014-10-25 Thread Chris Hermansen
Ahem sorry to all I did not read the last ten or so comments.

Having more carefully read through them, and having re-read the earlier
notes, I have (I believe) a more useful question.

Would it not be reasonable to mention on the release notes and related
pages that it may be possible to use usb-creator-gtk on a 14.04 system
to make a 14.10 bootable usb stick provided that the user is prepared to
type live when informed that gfxboot.c32 is not bootable, or is
prepared to copy the gfxboot.32 file from the 14.04 system onto the usb
stick prior to use?

2014-10-24 Thread Chris Hermansen
Sorry I should mention that I created the bootable USB on a 14.04
system.

The workaround, that is typing live into the boot prompt, eventually
yields a live session.

This is Ubuntu 14.10 downloaded today from the regular release page.

[Bug 1295961] Re: Need updated stable nvidia drivers landing

2014-10-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
This is an even worse issue in 14.10 FCS. Nouveau doesn't work well for
my 750, giving me only 1024 X 768 resolution. And worse, during
install, I get such a low resolution I cannot see the full installation
window, nor the settings window, so I don't know what that resolution
is... but I bet it's not more than 640 X 480.

And even worse than that is I cannot get 334.21 to install under
14.10 The NVidia script fails in various places depending on the
options I select for the installation.

I see System76 is shipping computers with this graphics adapter; I guess
they have solved the problem in a roundabout way.

[Bug 1325801] Re: failed to boot from USB disk with error: gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R Image boot:

2014-10-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
Regarding #51: in today's 14.10 daily I was affected by the same
problem. I copied /usr/lib/syslinux/gfxboot.c32 from my 14.04 system
into the usb /syslinux and it now boots fine.

This is 14.10 Ubuntu 64. The boot disk was created on a 14.04 Ubuntu 64
system, up to date, with usb-creator-gtk.

[Bug 1295961] Re: Need updated stable nvidia drivers landing

2014-10-16 Thread Chris Hermansen
An update to my earlier comment.

Nouveau in 14.10 continues to be unsatisfactory (1024 X 768 on NVidia
GTX750 and a 1920 X 1080 monitor).

However, the really grossly disgusting low resolution seen on the live
image was fixed by replacing the gfxboot.c32 which was a workaround to a
boot problem as reported in 1325801.

Also, more good news... I used the ppa mentioned above in #3 to install
nvidia-graphics-drivers-343 and it works just fine.

Still, there are lots of newer NVidia cards out there that need some of
these newer drivers, or a more up-to-date nouveau...

Re: [Bug 1234429] Re: 1002:5975 [Dell Inspiron 1501] vertical coloured lines / herringbone pattern on startup

2014-05-09 Thread Chris Hermansen
Hi Tony and others,

I had planned to file an upstream bug but my inspiron (because of this
problem and a problem with the Broadcomm wireless) is very awkward to
test... So I have not - yet anyway - done that.

Regards, Chris Hermansen
On May 9, 2014 9:10 PM, Anthony Matt tonym...@gmail.com wrote:

I have display problems with a Dell Vostro 1000 (2.4.1 BIOS, similar
hardware to Inspiron 1501) on Lubuntu 14.04. Vertical lines on boot,
whether with LiveCD (USB stick) or installed on hard drive. No
 herringbones or purple screens.

 Observations:
 1. Nomodeset works (albeit stuck in 1024 x 768) because it causes driver
'radeon' to unload, and X falls back to the vesa driver (per Xorg.0.log).
 2. External VGA monitor (ViewSonic VA912b) always works in cloned display
mode, but when attached does not appear to change the laptop screen
 behavior.
 3. Return after 'Switch off display' or 'Put display to sleep' (in Xfce
Power Manager) sometimes restores display, other times results in blank
laptop screen (no image, no lines) or vertical lines; display that is set
to lower resolution shows only part of desktop (crops rather than shrinks
 to fit entire desktop).
 4. Laptop lid behavior: Lock Screen option does not fix vertical lines,
does not break normal screen; Suspend sometimes fixes vertical lines.
 5. Changing LVDS monitor resolution or refresh rate (in Monitor Settings
GUI) always causes LVDS to display vertical lines. Turning LVDS off, then
on sometimes restores screen from vertical line state.
 6. Behaviors in 3-5 appear to be time/temperature dependent - restoring
the screen works consistently for ~1 hour (from first boot of the day),
then works less frequently until not at all.
 7. Errors (probably unrelated) on screen displayed when returning from
Suspend: ata1: softreset failed (device not ready)
 8. No monitors.xml in ~/.config; no xorg.conf.
 9. xrandr reports various LVDS resolutions from 640 x 480 up to 1280 x 800.

Was an upstream bug ever filed for this issue?
I'm willing to supply logs etc to help resolve this bug.

 Thanks,
 Tony

[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-05-05 Thread Chris Hermansen
Neil Rodgers' workaround above (#48) eliminates, or at least drastically
reduces, this problem for me. Neil, thanks!

For reference, I am running 14.04 64bit up to date on an older Dell
Optiplex;using NVidia drivers 3.34.21 on a GeForce GTX 750/PCIe/SSE2
because Nouveau doesn't yet support this card.

[Bug 1270572] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 should have gnome-tweak-tool installed by default because of many settings that are missed gnome-control-center

2014-04-09 Thread Chris Hermansen
But really, gnome-tweak-tool does not look right running under Unity, at
least not today.

The UI is messed up, shading in the wrong place, etc. I managed to use
it to swap CTRL and CAPS LOCK but its visual flaws did not give me
confidence in its operation.

Besides, it tweaks a whole bunch of things unrelated to Unity settings
(quite reasonable) - so how can this be a solution for setting things in
Unity?

[Bug 1256874] Re: warning colour needed when the entire disk will be used

2013-12-02 Thread Chris Hermansen
This is a great point to think clearly about the contents of the
message.

The prospective user needs to understand clearly that the erase and
install option leaves no chance of returning to the previous state
unless there is a separate backup.

I can easily believe that the inexperienced or untutored prospective
user would read Erase disk and install Lubuntu and not realize there
is some hidden copy of Windows somewhere that can be magically
reinstalled. At the same time there cannot be pages and pages of
instructions.

So I suggest:

Delete Windows and all your data from the computer forever and install
Lubuntu in its place

In something contrasty and obvious as Nio suggests.

If there is room for a bit more explanation / fine print below then
something like:

if you have a backup of Windows or install media, you can re-install
it

and:

Once Lubuntu is installed, you can retrieve your data from your most
recent backup.
