[Bug 339555] Re: compiz slowmotion after Jaunty upgrade

Timo: I can reproduce slowness on 965 from a fresh user and a beta live

[Bug 339555] Re: compiz slowmotion after Jaunty upgrade

2009-03-31 Thread Chris Jones
While I can't be sure that it's the same root cause, I am also seeing a
regression from 8.10 to 9.04 in the performance of compiz effects. In my
case it seems to be particularly closely tied to system activity - the
busier the system is the worse the effects get (which stands to reason,
but the effect is very pronounced. flipping workspaces is enough to slow
the effects down).

[Bug 352547] [NEW] blank CD prompt should not always appear

2009-03-31 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

I just downloaded an ISO to my (9.04) desktop. I right clicked on it and chose
the option to burn it to CD.
I then inserted a blank CD.
Nautilus popped up the dialog asking me what I wanted to do with the blank CD.

the burn still worked, this is simply a wishlist suggesting that the
blank CD dialog should be skipped if the user has already started a CD-
writing task.

[Bug 328035] Re: X server crash: *** glibc detected *** free(): in valid next size (fast)

2009-03-24 Thread Chris Jones
Matt: if it is screensaver related, it's probably not because of some 3D parts
- I have a blank screen and am seeing this, although I've yet to find a log of
it (perhaps just because of a lack of retention of Xorg logs for very long,
which is something I filed separately a while ago as Bug #274870 ).
It's odd that it doesn't happen more repeatably though, activating the
screensaver happens every time I suspend, but I only get a crash on resume
every couple of days.

[Bug 338344] Re: Node controller sometimes crashes

2009-03-24 Thread Chris Jones
I'm less sure now that this relates to disk space. Due to unrelated hardware
issues I've moved the NC to the same machine as the CC/CLC and this is still
happening. I've nuked all of the images I had, switched from xen to kvm and
uploaded the ttylinux image and the machine has 50GB spare, so this should
have worked correctly (and the file in /var/lib/eucalyptus/bukkits is the right
size).
Still, when I try to run an instance, the image is immediately removed and the
NC appears to restart.

What more debugging information can I provide so we can figure out
what's going on?

[Bug 338344] Re: Node controller sometimes crashes

2009-03-24 Thread Chris Jones
Daniel: That does appear to be the case here, yes, itk was installed. I
didn't explicitly choose to install that, so apt must have settled on it
when attempting to satisfy the apache dependency.

Soren: Presumably we could avoid this by either having eucalyptus-nc
explicitly conflict with apache2-mpm-itk, or explicitly depend on
apache2-mpm-prefork|apache2-mpm-worker ? (I wonder if the latter might
be the best option since those are the two that are explicitly
configured by eucalyptus to only run a single child)

[Bug 344976] [NEW] Installation without disks produces a strange question

2009-03-18 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I attempted to install yesterday's jaunty daily server on a Sun X4150.
Due to some strange vendor confusion, the machine has a SATA controller, but
has SAS disks in it. Obviously this means the disks do not work. The kernel
indeed confirms that it can find no disks.

d-i did not produce an obvious error hinting at that fact, instead it
suggested that there were disks with mounted partitions, and showed an
empty list. Attached is a screenshot.

[Bug 338344] Re: Node controller doesn't report failed image downloads

2009-03-12 Thread Chris Jones
** Summary changed:

- Node controller doesn't create nodes
+ Node controller doesn't report failed image downloads

** Description changed:

This is the log from the node controller. It clearly sees that it is
supposed to be spawning an instance, and at least starts grabbing the
- images, but almost immediately just rm -rf's them. What additional
- information would be useful to debug this?
+ images, but almost immediately just rm -rf's them.
+
+ It transpires that this is due to the images being incomplete in Walrus
+ (ran out of disk space while uploading them). This suggests that some
+ internal verification is taking place and rejecting the images. The NC
+ should really log this fact, and if possible send a message back to the
+ CC so it knows the instance setup failed (atm the instance shows as
+ pending until some timeout is reached, when it is shown as terminated).

[Bug 341710] [NEW] admin user cannot configure a user without an email address

2009-03-12 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

I created some test users for myself on a local Eucalyptus instance and I
seemed to be unable to do so without it emailing user details to me.
As an admin I would expect to be able to create and activate users myself - it
may not always be useful/appropriate to involve them in the process.

(I guess this is a wishlist item really)

[Bug 341714] [NEW] handle disk space constraints more explicitly

2009-03-12 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

During some of my testing I have been operating with fairly low amounts
of disk space and in various situations I have run out of space without
Eucalyptus obviously logging that (e.g. uploading images, unpacking
images, preparing images).

I don't have exact logs of the exact situations I have hit this in,
unfortunately, but I believe it was that an image upload failed, and
then subsequently image unpacking failed.

(and I appreciate that running something like Eucalyptus in an
environment with small disks is somewhat unreasonable)

[Bug 36739] Re: MASTER Misbehaves in all sorts of ways when upgraded while running

2009-03-09 Thread Chris Jones
I think it's fair to say that the lightbulb notification is not
working well enough. It's good for people who notice this sort of thing,
but it's not something that's immediately obvious, and it doesn't scream
for attention if it's initially ignored.

IMHO there are two options for making this experience more user
friendly:

 1) Running firefox instances notice that they have been upgraded
(either by monitoring their chrome directory, or being fed some signal.
The former seems more robust in a multi-user world) and display very
stern warnings to the user that they really really should click a button
which causes firefox to restart itself as it would have if it had been
upgraded via its own internal mechanism. Obviously the chrome for this
would need to be made resistant somehow, so it wasn't wiped out when the
upgrade happens. This is either an upstream issue, or something we would
have to do. Do they ever have to care about this instance in Windows? If
firefox can be deployed as a system-wide app rather than per-user, they
must do.

2) Firefox updates should only be applied while restarting the computer
(obviously the infrastructure for doing this does not yet exist, but I
think I've seen some talk about doing more updates in this way, when
they are fundamentally incompatible with being performed while people
are logged in). This would require no effort from upstream, but would
require a pretty large change in the way Ubuntu updates work.

[Bug 338674] [NEW] uses a sub-optimal definition of a word

2009-03-06 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wdiff

Quoth the man page:

A word is anything between whitespace.

This may be mostly true in natural english, but is often deeply untrue in other
text files.
An ideal option would be to be able to specify on the command line, a series of
characters to be considered as word delimiters.

[Bug 338764] [NEW] missing /var/run/eucalyptus

2009-03-06 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

After applying the latest jaunty updates I rebooted and now eucalyptus-
nc will not start. looking through the httpd-nc_error_log this seems to
be because /var/run/eucalyptus did not exist. Creating it and chowning
eucalyptus:eucalyptus allows the NC to start.

Perhaps the postinst of eucalyptus-common should be creating it?

[Bug 338158] [NEW] g-k-d hangs, consumes CPU then segfaults

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Machine upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty

I have a keyring that should be unlocked at login. Attempting to use it
(e.g. for ssh) causes me to be prompted for the keyring password, then
the key password. It then provides authentication for a few ssh
sessions, but after a while hits 100% CPU. Trying to use it after that
causes it to segfault.

Attaching some output from running it with gdb and debugging symbols
installed. I have stripped my key/passphrase.

[Bug 164682] Re: Ejecting an ipod should tell the ipod to disconnect, like rhythmbox

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Jones
AFAIK the essential thing when unmount an ipod is that it waits to be ejected
as well. Nautilus/rhythmbox/banshee/etc. know to do this, presumably because of
its hal properties.
I assume the drive mount applet does not pay attention to this kind of thing.
If one manually umounts the ipod, it continues to claim that it is connected,
but eject(1) on the partition causes it to change its display and tell the user
it's ok to disconnect.

[Bug 338344] [NEW] Node controller doesn't create nodes

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Jones

This is the log from the node controller. It clearly sees that it is
supposed to be spawning an instance, and at least starts grabbing the
images, but almost immediately just rm -rf's them. What additional

[Bug 164682] Re: Ejecting an ipod should tell the ipod to disconnect, like rhythmbox

2009-03-05 Thread Chris Jones
The Disk Mounter does indeed only offer an Eject option, so it seems
that this is fixed. I seem to remember the old applet used to allow the
user to specify specific devices, mountpoints and icons, but the new one
seems to be entirely related to HAL, so I suspect this bug couldn't
really occur anymore.

[Bug 334982] [NEW] segfaulting with eucalyptus

2009-02-26 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

the children of apache are segfaulting when eucalyptus talks to them.
upstream appears to be aware:

[16:07] @grze_ Ng: if you are using the jaunty package there is something up
w/ the package setup that is
causing the children to die on sig 11
[16:07] Ng grze_: yep, I am
[16:07] @grze_ Ng: we are working on it -- sorry about that :(

I don't have a great deal of useful debugging output for this. I tried
stracing apache and its children and the only thing which immediately
jumped out was a call to capget() with a NULL parameter, but this didn't
appear to immediately cause the segfault.

[Bug 245437] Re: wrong aspect ratio for 1680x1050 wide screen

2009-02-25 Thread Chris Jones
Without wishing to seem overly pedantic, 1680x1050, 1365x768 (and other
increasingly common resolutions like 1440x900 and 1280x800) are 16:10, not
16:9. My laptop is 16:10 and has always shown the usplash image squashed
vertically (I have never made any attempt to configure usplash, and I'm pretty
sure that one generally shouldn't assume people will).
I'll test out the jaunty upload and see how it looks :)

(IME uplash always gets things right on 4:3 screens and 16:9 screens,
but I've not tested it beyond 1920x1080)

[Bug 334501] [NEW] Cloud controller startup time

2009-02-25 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

It seems like the cloud controller portion of Eucalyptus takes some time
to initialise itself even on modern server hardware. While this may not
directly be a bug, it can be confusing - I have been restarting it and
reading logs to try and work out why it wasn't starting, when all I
actually needed to do was wait (I don't have timing data for the first
run to know if that was longer, but it reproducibly takes around 45
seconds to finish loading and listen on port 8443 on an HP DL385G2.

I did wonder if some of this was down to error messages about not being
able to load http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd
but it doesn't get any quicker if I nullroute java.sun.com (the machine
in question is behind a firewall that would silently eat outbound
packets to internet hosts).

I think it might be useful to have the init script's start action
mention that it might be a minute or two until the service is fully
started.

[Bug 333512] [NEW] Does not make installing Java unlimited strength crypto easy

2009-02-23 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

When starting Eucalyptus for the first time, it asks you:

Your java installation misses unlimited strength crypto policy.
Read more http://eucalyptus.cs.ucsb.edu/wiki/EucalyptusAdministratorGuide
Install involves modifying jre/lib/security, you can install by hand
or we can install it for you.

The link it provides is not directly informative about this. Are we
unable to package the crypto JARs for some reason? If so, could we at
least have a page on wiki.ubuntu.com with explicit instructions for
Ubuntu users, and display that link?

I would also suggest that it not offer to do things for the user, if for
no other reason than it means it will be offered during the initial
package install. Printing appropriate information when the init script
is started would seem sufficient.

[Bug 311716] Re: The slider brightness Applet has value inverted after the last update (2.6.27-11)

2009-02-15 Thread Chris Jones
Unless there should actually be a separate bug, it seems that the most recent
comments indicate that brightness control is broken on some machines,
regressing from -9.
I can also confirm that on my Thinkpad X300.

[Bug 328093] [NEW] [jaunty] upgrade to 0.6.0 leaves a non-working libvirtd

2009-02-11 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Intrepid and later versions of libvirtd run as the group libvirtd.
The 0.6.0 upload in jaunty wants to run as libvirt, but does not do any
transition work in pre/postinst.

The resulting behavious is that the libvirtd init script claims success
in starting the daemon, but actually syslog shows that it exits almost
immediately when it is unable to find its group.

[Bug 291847] Re: xdg-open mangles mailto: urls to ///f...@bar.com

2009-02-11 Thread Chris Jones
xdg-open is a very simple shell script which appears to do nothing to
modify the URL parameter before passing it to the chosen desktop handler
(so gnome-open for Ubuntu). Indeed, running:

gnome-open mailto:c...@tenshu.net

will produce the same prefixed ///

(xdg-email also calls gnome-open)

gnome-open is even shorter than xdg-open, albeit in C. It appears to be
doing the canonicalisation with calls to GIO.

It seems as though passing a mailto: URI to a GIO function that creates a GFile
(e.g. g_file_new_for_commandline_arg() which gnome-open uses) may be slightly
destructive, to quote GIO's ChangeLog.
On the (admittedly somewhat arbitrary and potentially spurious) basis that
something called GFile has no business dealing with things that aren't files,
I've attached a naive patch to make gnome-open not feed mailto URIs through
GFile.

2009-02-11 Thread Chris Jones
(if this is not to be fixed in gnome-open, but GFile then this bug
should be moved to glib2 rather than libgnome. I've invalidated the xdg-
utils task because that seems like an entirely worse place to fix it
than gnome-open)

[Bug 324096] [NEW] Does not completely respect -t

2009-02-01 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-vm-builder

When running ubuntu-vm-builder on a machine with a very constrained /tmp I set
up a separate partition with plenty of space (20G) and passed its mount point
to ubuntu-vm-builder with -t.
It installed a disk image, but then ran out of space when it was using qemu-img
to convert the image.

Attached is the output of running u-vm-b

[Bug 324102] [NEW] unclear error message

2009-02-01 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-vm-builder

After a failed run, re-running ubuntu-vmbuilder just gives me the error
message:

2009-02-01 22:25:30,834 INFO Cleaning up
ubuntu-kvm already exists

This actually just seems to mean that there's a directory with that name
in $PWD, even though -t was specified in the failed ubuntu-vm-builder
call, so that's where everything should be, and they should have been
cleaned up after the failed run anyway.

[Bug 324096] Re: Does not completely respect -t

2009-02-01 Thread Chris Jones
It's possible that this was actually /opt/tmp which ran out of space,
but the errors didn't say, so it's kind of hard to tell. If that is the
case, then this bug should actually be ubuntu-vm-builder needs to be
more explicit with its errors

This actually seems to be because the output image is written to $PWD,
so is just an unhelpful error (maybe suggest using -d?)
