[Bug 1926201] Re: install.py crashed with AssertionError in __init__(): Failed to mount the target: /target

2022-03-20 Thread Chris McDonough
This symptom is back in today's daily build of 22.04 when attempting to
install to ZFS/zsys with encryption. I was able to install to ZFS/zsys
without encryption successfully.

[Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs

2021-03-14 Thread Chris McDonough
Not that it's worth much, but I will side with the folks who want to be
able to configure paths as exceptions to the hardcoded rule of "only
allow access to files in /dev, /etc, and /home" either globally or per-
snap. I cannot fathom a reason for a central authority to distrust a
local administrator to configure exceptions to this rule if they
understand the risk.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-08-31 Thread Chris McDonough
I'm updated fully as of today under 20.04 and have the same issue
described in OP with an NVIDIA M2000M in a Thinkpad P50 using the
proprietary drivers and 1 1080p monitor (the laptop panel) and 1 4k
monitor (Dell external).

#83 indicated that they changed things so that their PRIME settings were
"on demand" and that made things work for them, but my external monitor
just quits working when I change it to that.

Things work mostly as expected with the nouveau driver, but no scaling
really works under the proprietary driver. I would use the nouveau
driver but it seems very sluggish under any scaling factor.

That said, my issue isn't really about fractional scaling, FWIW. I want
to set the external display at 200% and set the internal one at 100%, a
configuration which doesn't require fractional. But doing this produces
200% on both panels reliably (and the percentage values in settings
reflect that both are set to 200%) under the proprietary drivers.

So right now I can effectively either choose from these three options:
a) use nouveau, make both displays work as I would like, but have a very
sluggish UI experience b) use proprietary and have text that's too small
to read for my old eyes on the 4K external monitor but have a usable
built-in display, or b) use proprietary to get reasonably sized text and
icons on the 4K external monitor but accept that the built-in monitor is
not very useful because its effective resolution is 960x540.

It seems that some people have gotten the combination of proprietary
NVIDIA drivers and scaling to work. I would try this on another system
to doublecheck but I don't have a machine handy with NVIDIA graphics
different than the one in my system (M2000M).

[Bug 1799994] Re: Xorg loads, no display on nvidia 390.77-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

2018-11-09 Thread Chris McDonough
For the record, I have a Lenovo P50 running Ubuntu MATE (which uses
lightdm), also in am Ultradock. It is running in "Discrete" (NVIDIA)
mode using nvidia-396 from the graphics-driver ppa, and had been working
well since at least -34.

When I upgraded to -38 (from -36), the system comes up to the greeter
screen in a low resolution, and though it works, when I log in, the low
resolution remains. When I boot to -36 again, same problem, but if I
boot to -34, strangely, it works. When I compare the xorg.log between a
"good" boot (in -34) and a "bad" boot (in -38), I can see that in the
"bad" boot, it's just not finding any nvidia drivers, while in the
"good" boot it is.

I've been booting to -34 as a workaround, but I suspect this is the same
problem as is described by the OP, and if there's anything I can do to
help, please let me know.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-04 Thread Chris McDonough
Burt P wrt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-390/+bug/1752053/comments/43, you might try this:

edit /etc/default/grub, editing:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""

And adding:

  GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080-32,auto
  GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

(you will almost certainly need to change the GRUB_GFXMODE value if your
main display is not native 1920x1080)

Then rerun sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

I had the same symptom you did a while back, because for unknown reasons
the hardware would get into a snit if the grub graphics mode didn't
match the native mode. You may not need to comment out the splash and
quiet, but I needed to in order to be able to successfully enter a
decryption passphrase.

[Bug 1752739] Re: PRIME Synchronization doesn't work with linux-kernel 4.15.

2018-03-04 Thread Chris McDonough
Given that even a PRIME switch requires a logout and a reboot isn't that much
worse,
I think it's a reasonable workaround for initial release (not far away, and
reading about the current state of affairs, probably too imminent to get PRIME
working again) to require that folks switch drivers to intel via package
management instead of PRIME. The bare minimim would be to fix this minor bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-390/+bug/175

This of course doesn't help the Wayland issue you mentioned.

[Bug 1753333] [NEW] Using "Software and Updates -> Additional Drivers" to Switch Fails

2018-03-04 Thread Chris McDonough
Public bug reported:

When you are in the initial install state, you can easily switch from
the Nouvea drivers to the Nvidia drivers by choosing the option in
"Software and Updates -> Additional Drivers". However, when you attempt
to switch back (by selecting the nouveau option and clicking Apply), and
subsequently reboot, your system will still come up using the Nvidia
drivers, and you will WTF.

And then, if you visit Additional Drivers, you will be presented with
grayed out options for both nvidia and nouvea, and the only selectable
option will be "continue using manually installed driver".

The reason for this is that the tool, when reselecting nvidia in the
GUI, uninstalls the nvidia-drivers-390 package, but because it's a
metapackage (or at least I presume this is the reason), it doesn't
uninstall its dependencies, which causes the Additional Drivers tool to
believe it's in a non-automanaged state, and the nvidia drivers never
actually get uninstalled.

You can fix it by doing an apt autoremove and rerunning the Additional
Drivers tool. But obviously there is no real way for inexperienced
users to know this.

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-02-28 Thread Chris McDonough
After having the same problem, I dist-upgraded to proposed and can
confirm that it fixed it (I did an apt-get purge nividia* before the
dist-upgrade then a apt-get install nvidia-384 after the dist-upgrade)/

One thing that this minor bug pointed out to me is that it has become
inconvenient in the current strategy to revert to an older Nvidia driver
version, as nvidia-384 is now a transitional package that depends on
nvidia-390. Even after adding the graphics-driver ppa, it was not
trivially possible to downgrade from 390. I understand the intent
(upgrade folks to the latest proprietary thing without them needing to
take extra action), but I sort of wonder whether the packages should be
renamed so they don't match the graphics-driver ppa names, such that we
could purge nvidia, then add the ppa, then do e.g. apt-get install
nvidia-387 and actually get 387 instead of 390.

[Bug 1307109] Re: Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

2017-03-04 Thread Chris McDonough
Another data point: an Aventra MyEID PKI card
(http://www.aventra.fi/webshop/index.php?route=product/product_id=53
; it's apparently a "version 4", on the invoice it's identified as SKU:
MYEID and MPN: TH#130) works fine in this Alcor reader under OpenSC on
Ubuntu. The only card that has this flapping problem with this reader
under Linux so far is the Feitian/Entersafe A22CR, and again, the
A22CR+Alcor combo doesn't flap the same way under Windows.

2017-02-17 Thread Chris McDonough
I'll also note that the A22CR card works fine (does not exhibit the
flapping behavior) in an external Feitian reader.

Interestingly, the A22CR card + Alcor combibation doesn't "flap" under
Windows either when running opensc-tool in a loop. Just under Linux.

[Bug 1307109] Re: Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

2017-02-17 Thread Chris McDonough
I have the same problem, using pcscd 1.8.14-1ubuntu1.16.04.1 on an IBM
Thinkpad P50, which has the same card reader.

However, interestingly, it only happens when I use a Feitian/Entersafe
A22CR card. I tried two of them with the same result, so it's not a
flaky card either.

When I use a PIVKey C910 card, it does not "flap" like it does with the
entersafe card. The PIVKey card works fine in the reader.

[Bug 566149] Re: Lucid: No USB after resume on Thinkpad X201, T410, T410s, T510, W510

2010-05-07 Thread Chris McDonough
@Karl Ryder: FTR, I just yesterday followed the steps at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds to install the kernel
at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/
. It fixed the USB suspend problem and it didn't cause many other
problems. I think it might have broken HDMI audio, but I didn't use
that anyway (normal audio through the internal speakers is fine). I
haven't noticed anything else broken yet, although there well may be.
But note that you can still boot to the older kernel after installing a
new one too, so I'd reconsider trying it.
