[Bug 380077] [NEW] vlc ignores subtitle font setting

2009-05-24 Thread Chris Roddy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

VLC ignores my font selection for rendering subtitles. It will briefly
display the filename in my selected font at the start of playback, but
for the text of subtitles (from, for example, an externally loaded srt
file or from embedded srt subtitles) always uses the same font. I'm not
entirely sure but it appears to be Verdana or Bitstream Vera Sans.

I thought that perhaps I was just having a miserably bad day
distinguishing fonts, so I tried a serif font -- again, the file name
was displayed in my selected font and VLC immediately reverted to
displaying the actual subtitles in the mystery sans serif font.

As far as I know, there is no facility for specifying a font in SRT
format, and at any rate, I've read over the entire file and there don't
appear to be any references to other fonts, so I am pretty sure that VLC
is simply ignoring the setting.

Here is the relevant section of my vlcrc:

[freetype] # Freetype2 font renderer

# string (Font)
freetype-font=/usr/local/share/fonts/Droid/DroidSans-Bold.ttf

# integer (Font size in pixels)
freetype-fontsize=24

# integer (Opacity)
#freetype-opacity=255

# integer (Text default color)
#freetype-color=16777215

# integer (Relative font size)
#freetype-rel-fontsize=16

# integer (Font Effect)
freetype-effect=3

# boolean (Use YUVP renderer)
#freetype-yuvp=0

The file I have described exists and is readable:
$ ls -l /usr/local/share/fonts/Droid/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 148484 2009-04-19 21:59
/usr/local/share/fonts/Droid/DroidSans-Bold.ttf

(again, at the start of playback, VLC displays the video filename in
Droid Sans Bold, so it's not that VLC can't open the file for reading)

I have tried nuking ~/.config/vlc and recreating my settings again; the
result is the same.

These are the versions of packages on my system:

[Bug 367019] [NEW] cut and paste operations affect unselected tracks

2009-04-25 Thread Chris Roddy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacity

cut and paste operations appear to be affecting unselected tracks. for
example, if i have a project with four tracks and i select part of the
first one only and then cut that selected audio (using ctrl+x or the
menu), the same timespan is cut from the other three tracks. if i copy a
selection of audio from one project and paste it at the beginning of an
empty track in another project, a silence of length equal to the
clipboard is inserted at the beginning of all the other tracks.

i have not seen this behavior in any build of audacity before, going
back at least five years. although there are undesirable workarounds for
some aspects of the bug (such as using "split cut" instead of "cut" and
then manually realigning the region), this behavior makes editing multi-
track projects in any nontrivial way essentially impossible.

i am able to reproduce the same behavior regardless of whether i am
using pulseaudio or addressing the ALSA driver directly. i am able to
reproduce the same behavior after moving all ~/.audacity* out of the way
and allowing audacity to create them anew.

[Bug 264977] Re: Filenames in ~/.Private are not encrypted

I understand that there are challenges to implementing encryption of the
file names, but as it stands now I would describe these tools as
unreleasable. I encourage the maintainers to withdraw this package from
the distribution until this glaring design defect can be corrected.

An encrypted directory that leaks the names, directory structure, and
file sizes in plain text is almost completely useless, and is in many
ways worse than simply trying to hide them with dotfiles and
misdirection -- at least in that case, I'm not waving a gigantic red
flag that says "hey! here's all my secret shit! here's how i keep it
organized, what i call it, and how big each file is!"

[Bug 228351] [NEW] popups disappear instantly when message is filtered

2008-05-08 Thread Chris Roddy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mail-notification

When using mail-notification with Evolution accounts, the popups
disappear instantly from the popup stack when a message is moved to
another folder by a filter. Since the popup disappears instantly, and
the message is simultaneously moved out of the account's inbox, this
leaves me knowing only that I have a new message *somewhere*, and I have
to manually plow through many folders to find what it might have been.

The popup disappears instantly whether or not I have configured mail-
notification to override the desktop default for popup expiration, and
even when I have configured popups to never expire. The behavior for a
message popup should be that it remains until the configured or default
expiration time arrives. I would not even mind if the "open" and "mark
as read" buttons failed in this scenario, but the instantaneous
disappearance of the message popups is almost maddening.

This almost certainly related to bug #66517 but if it reads as a
duplicate I have been unclear in my report.

I think displayconfig-gtk is broken in some deeper way at the moment. It
was writing Virtual directives for a resolution larger than my display

resolution in its GUI (1680x1050). The actual result was very bizarre:
the X server would display a 1680x1050 area, stretched slightly both
horizontally and vertically so the contents spilled offscreen and the
mouse pointer had to be moved to the edge to bring them on. I'd estimate
that about 5-10% of the width and height were offscreen at all times.
Altering the Virtual directive and removing all references to 1920x1200
in xorg.conf had no effect.

I finally got it to work properly by writing an xorg.conf using nvidia-
settings.

[Bug 215283] [NEW] rhythmbox restarts after exit

2008-04-10 Thread Chris Roddy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I first filed this as a question, as I am only able to reproduce it on
one of my two Ubuntu systems. I am using version 0.11.5-0ubuntu2.

When I exit Rhythmbox, it restarts itself (or something else restarts
it) immediately, with a new process id. It does respond to SIGTERM
however, and does not respawn itself after being terminated. pstree
shows it as a child process of init, which doesn't tell me much.

I can reproduce this behavior regardless of how I start Rhythmbox. It
still restarts itself at exit if I start it from the GNOME Applications
menu, or simply running "rhythmbox" from a terminal. The new process is
not attached to the old controlling terminal in the latter case.

I can reproduce this behavior regardless of how I exit Rhythmbox. It
still restarts itself if I exit by selecting Music -> Quit from the menu
bar, close the main window, or select Quit from the notification area
icon.

It does not appear to be in my GNOME session at all. When it is running,
it appears in gnome-session-properties as style "Normal", and if I
remove it, it simply starts itself again.

I am using a fully updated Hardy beta system. I cannot reproduce this
problem at all on my other Hardy system. This problem first appeared a
couple of weeks ago; I had already upgraded from Gutsy and I'd used
Rhythmbox a great deal before this issue appeared.

[Bug 204566] Re: Rhythmbox keeps trying to install codecs

2008-03-22 Thread Chris Roddy
additionally this error is very annoying for those of us that store
things in our music libraries that are in codecs that are unsupportable
at the moment. it's the right place to keep those music files, but the
codec search is never going to succeed. at the least there ought to be a
way to suppress this permanently.

[Bug 201510] [NEW] Last.fm plugin does not scrobble songs played from remote DAAP share

2008-03-12 Thread Chris Roddy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The Last.fm plugin for Rhythmbox does not appear to submit information
to the Audioscrobbler web services site for songs played from a remote
DAAP share. This is unfortunate since I do around half of my listening
from remote clients and those songs are not submitted.

[Bug 186999] Re: Dell OEM ATI graphics chip not recognised by Restricted Drivers Manager

2008-01-29 Thread Chris Roddy
i have this same system -- in my experience the VESA driver does not
even work acceptably, leaving a badly scrambled color palette after
switching back from a VT or after any change in screen resolution. as
far as i know the only solution at the moment is to install the fglrx
driver using ATI's installer. restricted-manager correctly detects that
the hardware is unsupported by the current fglrx packages, but exits
with a misleading error message. this bug should probably be moved to
one of the fglrx packages.
