[Bug 1772746] Re: After upgrade to 18.04, all pip and pip3 commands fail

2019-06-08 Thread Cormac Long
Any further moves on this?

I have an 18.04 LTS system which I got into a right tangle due to updating apt
installed pip using
pip install -U pip
(I needed pip > 10). It took some fussing to sort out (sadness).

[Bug 1803476] Re: After reboot, snap-confine has elevated permissions and is not confined but should be

2019-04-16 Thread Cormac Long
One reason why apparmor may need to be disabled:

Issue:
Apparmor prevents
docker container stop
from working - it blocks the signalling init process. From dmesg, we see
[156522.040461] audit: type=1400 audit(1555422697.325:338):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="signal" profile="docker-default" pid=19232
comm="runc" requested_mask="receive" denied_mask="receive" signal=kill
peer="unconfined"

We can shutdown apparmor for now
(https://forums.docker.com/t/can-not-stop-docker-container-permission-denied-error/41142/7):
Check status:
sudo aa-status

Shutdown and prevent it from restarting:
sudo systemctl disable apparmor.service --now

Unload AppArmor profiles:
sudo service apparmor teardown

Check status:
sudo aa-status

[Bug 1555608] Re: Bluetooth "Connection timed out" during a longer call

2016-05-09 Thread Cormac
This exact bug happens all the time for me on calls for more than around 2min.
The Bluetooth connection fail also happens during dialling - often on the first
call after a connection is established.

The only way to re-establish a connection is to disable bluetooth and
then re-enable it, and the fastest way to ensure it works is to put the
phone in flight mode and then turn that off again.

OK so my initial optimism with r21 expressed in #15 has been tempered.
I still get a lot of dropped calls.
To activate audio for music or podcasts through the bluetooth I have to
connect then toggle the bluetooth off and on again.. I've tried all sorts of
other methods but this is the only way.

[Bug 1447169] [NEW] Swipe to remove phone notifications should not use Delete

2015-04-22 Thread Cormac
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu phone notifications 14.10 (r21)

When you swipe right to remove a notification it indicates a dustbin
icon and says delete - this is confusing as you think it may delete
the message or email. You don't really talk of deleting notifications.

It should say Clear like it does for the Clear All below the notifications,
because all you are doing is clearing the notification.
The icon should also be changed from a dustbin to a check mark of some sort.

[Bug 1435040] Re: Ubuntu Phone (BQ E4.5) does not connect to car-bluetooth

2015-04-20 Thread Cormac
I am very happy since the update to r21, on all the issues I mentioned in the
original post.
I haven't dropped a call on bluetooth since the update.
The bluetooth remains connected on completion of a call and the phone mostly
reconnects automatically to my bluetooth devices.
Sometimes I have to toggle the bluetooth connection to get sound to play via
the bluetooth device an not via the phone speaker, however this is not
consistent and a lot of time I don't have to do this.

The bluetooth indicator works as expected and toggling the bluetooth
connection also works as expected.

[Bug 1439377] Re: Bluetooth dies upon switching to bluetooth settings.

2015-04-17 Thread Cormac
Ubuntu 14.10 (r20, 24.03.15) on BQ Aquaris 4.5 UE

Connecting to:
Car Headset (Skoda 2013 model - works perfectly with Nexus 5 on Android 4.4+ up
to 5.1)
Cheap BT Headphones (PSYC - works perfectly with Nexus 5 on Android 4.4+ up to
5.1)

These are the similar issues that I have found:
1. Bluetooth will initially connect to a device.

2. If connection either fails or I disconnect from the device I cannot
reconnect to the device. A phone reboot is required to reconnect but
the phone usually requires a hard reset to reboot (no power menu, I
have to hold power button for 20 seconds)

3. Bluetooth often crashes/disconnects during a phone call but always
crashes after a phone call.

[Bug 1408015] Re: [sdk] Confirmation in the header bar confusing

2015-04-15 Thread Cormac
My 2 cents on the Header Bar (for all applications):
Whenever there is a BACK button on the Header Bar then that is all the header
bar should be used for - going back to the previous page.
You can then expand the area of the Header Bar used to activate this go back
to include the Header Bar text.
For a right handed person using their thumb to reach the BACK button is
difficult enough on a 4.5 inch screen and requires a total hand shift to reach
on a 5 inch screen - expanding the touch area to go back makes this a lot
easier.

[Bug 1435040] Re: Ubuntu Phone (BQ E4.5) does not connect to car-bluetooth

2015-04-09 Thread Cormac
Bluetooth is a big issue for me, with the following issues I have noticed so
far:
1) I can pair my bq Aquaris with my Skoda Octavia (2013), I think it is a
Bolero radio BUT the connection is very flakey, connection often drops and then
it cannot be restored without a phone reboot. Phone call cannot last more than
about 5 minutes before a connection is lost.
2) The bluetooth icon often looks like it is still connected to something but
in the settings page it says Not Discoverable and there are no components
connected.
3) I then cannot turn bluetooth off or on - the toggle indicator just reverts
back to where it was unless I reboot the phone.
4) I have connected to a cheap set of bluetooth headphones (PSYC) but after
terminating a connection I was unable to reconnect and no. 2 above happens
again

[Bug 1134030] Re: Skype crash with proprietary nvidia drivers

2013-03-22 Thread Cormac
Thanks for the fix - I have added comments of what I believe you are
doing with the fix for a better understanding for those of us who are
not so smart, please correct me if I am wrong:

(move the current skype run script to a new file skype-bin)
mv /usr/bin/skype /usr/bin/skype-bin

(make a new skype run script)
gedit /usr/bin/skype

(copy this so that skype will preload libGL.so.1 before running the original
run script, which is now skype-bin)
#!/bin/sh
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1
exec skype-bin

(update permissions to allow the user to run the script)
## save and close and then:
chmod 0755 /usr/bin/skype

(can anyone explain why libGL.so.1 is needed?)

Thanks

v3.4-precise (and various rc* versions) - not sure if problem solved because
the nvidia driver will not install and my screen balloons to an unmanageable
resolution that I have had to remove the kernel

[Bug 991977] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on shutdown

2012-05-23 Thread Cormac
Stopping the unity-files-daemon from system monitor allows my system
to reboot/shutdown - hoping that this is no longer necessary when I
update the kernel (just struggling with getting the nVidia display
driver to install when I update the kernel)

[Bug 1002824] [NEW] Ubuntu shutdown/restart failure

2012-05-22 Thread Cormac
Public bug reported:

Bug reported as per instructions from Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch)

Shutdown and Reboot failure on Dell XPS/nVidia 295.49/Ubuntu 12.04

Sometimes sudo reboot -h now works, sometime not.

Had the same problem on 11.10 so I didn't install nVidia driver on a
clean 12.04 install but problem was still there. Installed the nVidia
driver because it didn't make a difference.

Tried stopping various unity processes using system monitor before a reboot
(sudo reboot -h now) and this seems to work but it is terribly inefficient
The unity processes stopped:
unity-files-daemon
unity-applications-daemon

I then tried it using the ubuntu shutdown button after stopping the
same processes and it also seems to have worked

[Bug 1002824] Re: Ubuntu shutdown/restart failure

2012-05-22 Thread Cormac
Update:

I tried the following and then tried sudo reboot -h now - which failed
to shutdown/restart the computer

I stopped the following unity process: unity-applications-daemon and
I did not stop unity-files-daemon

I am carrying out these tasks remotely so I will have to wait to get
home and manually restart the computer to try out the opposite actions,
i.e. stop unity-files-daemon and not unity-applications-daemon

Re: [Bug 241196] Re: offline messages not available

2008-12-16 Thread Cormac Reynolds
The nature of the bug seems to have changed slight in tbird 2.0.0.18.
Now I find that instead of random old messages being unavailable,
every message older than a certain date becomes unavailable when
offline. As before, when I look in my thunderbird profile with a text
editor (or another mail reader such as alpine), I can see that the
message has been downloaded, but thunderbird claims it can't find it.
I'm pretty sure this is not the same bug as #223241

I don't know what additional information I can give on recreating it.
I simply use thunderbird to access my gmail 'All Mail' folder. This is
a very large folder (2 GB), which I think is important - I don't see
this problem with small folders. I have it marked for offline use.
When I go offline (after downloading the folder) thunderbird claims
that many old messages have not been downloaded for offline use,
though they clearly have.

thanks for looking into this,

Cormac.

2008/12/5 John Vivirito gnomefr...@gmail.com:
Is this still a problem in tbird 2.0.0.18. I am unable to reproduce this
with the info given. Can you please list step by step on how to
 reproduce this?

Status in thunderbird source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: thunderbird

 ubuntu version: Ubuntu 8.04
 package version: 2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

I use thunderbird to access my gmail account with IMAP. I have one folder
that I have marked for offline use. When I go offline, I tell thunderbird to
download messages for offline use, which it appears to do. However, when I go
to look for old messages in that folder, some of them are unavailable, and
 give just the message:

The body of this message has not been downloaded from the server for reading
 offline, etc.,

while other messages of a similar age are available offline. The strange
thing is that if I use a text editor to examine the offline folder in my
thunderbird profile, I can find the messages that thunderbird claims are not
available offline. The full text of the message is available in the folder
and I can read it with my text editor. So the message was correctly
downloaded, but for some reason, thunderbird cannot find it in its own
folder. As soon as I go back online, thunderbird can find all messages
 correctly again.

The folder that I mark to download is *very* big - almost 2 GB (it is my
 gmail, 'All Mail' folder).

 thanks in advance,
 Cormac.
