I have had more time to test this on another computer. Both R7** and R8** both suffer from tearing with fglrx proprietary drivers. After further investigation, it appears as though this affects the Live CD only. The alternate install works perfectly with RAID array creation even when Ubuntu is installed. In compiz I have tried changing the settings such as the frequency slider and Sync to vblank but they make no difference. In the effects off I mean in System Preferences Appearance.
