[Bug 346907] Re: [jaunty] Shutdown, Restart, Etc. (Leave Functions) Not Found on "System" Sub-Menu

2009-07-01 Thread Craig Huffstetler
I don't feel that is on topic with the usability bug at hand. We are
talking about a GUI aspect of the "System" menu (found beside:
Applications, Places...) in Gnome Window Manager.

People can always forcefully reboot using CTRL + ALT + DEL, or shutdown using:
shutdown -h
halt
poweroff
Or even reboot using:
reboot

But, again, we are trying to make this user friendly and usability sane.
Why make someone go to a terminal to reboot? Or tap ALT + F2 and type in
a command? Or to put the shutdown/reboot/logout commands back on their
SYSTEM menu (what this thread is about) REMOVE the Fast User Switcher
Applet from the far right which comes in Gnome by default?

Again, we compared this to "removing life vests from a small ship" or on
a larger scale "removing life boats and life vests and all hopes of
being rescued from a larger vessel" then guess what -- the rescue boat
magically appears out of thin air when you remove the life vests, etc.

Because this is the concept: How would a user know to remove the life
vests in a sinking vessel and a rescue boat appears?

In this case how does the user know to remove the Fast User Switcher
Applet and then the Shutdown/Reboot/Logout functions appear normally in
the System menu again? It makes absolutely no sense (in any, well, sense
of the word).

[Bug 374560] Re: AR5212 (Atheros Card) no longer functions since upgrade to Jaunty

2009-06-20 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Greetings Leann,

I installed:

linux-backports-modules-jaunty

Awhile back. It did correct this problem for me after I:

disabled & re-enabled the "Atheros" driver in the Restricted Drivers
panel.

Again, this solved the problem for me.

I know the "Atheros problem" exists for quite a few others (when doing a
simple bug search). I've seen the problem reported quite a bit since
beta and final release in Jaunty. I've been following them when I touch
each of them. I'm not sure if this will fix the issue for the other bugs
or not, but either way I'd like a usability sane way (like in Jaunty &
Intrepid) to "just make the wireless cards work" upon install.

If I can do anything else to assist you -- please let me know.

Sincerely,

Craig

[Bug 374560] [NEW] AR5212 (Atheros Card) no longer functions since upgrade to Jaunty

2009-05-10 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Public bug reported:

My Atheros 5212 on my IBM Z60m no longer functions after upgrading from
Intrepid Ibex to Jaunty.

It functioned in the last two previous versions of Ubuntu just fine;
however, no matter what I do (using MadWifi drivers, enabling the
restricted driver, disabling the restricted driver, etc.) it will not
function correctly.

This is what it does:

- It will find networks (WiFi),
- However, it will *sometimes* connect to the networks briefly (WPA, WEP, no
security at all),
- But then it will immediately disconnect after connecting.

I do not understand why it is doing this, but I do know this issue did
not exist at all during Intrepid or Hardy.

I have tried everything (above) to get it to work, however nothing
worked.

This was the same for both of the following scenarios:
- Upgrade from Intrepid; and
- Clean install of Jaunty on said machine.

No matter what the WiFi connection does not function as intended (or as
it did before the installation OR upgrade of Jaunty).

2009-04-28 Thread Craig Huffstetler
I really think this comes down to a usability issue.

Users should not have to go to extra steps to get things to work. The
goal of Intrepid Ibex alone was improving Wifi Usability. I believe this
is still a goal. The upgrade-manager/upgrade broke what was already
working. This should not have occurred.

It does work with compiling the proprietary drivers from Creative since
Jaunty Alpha 3, I believe. However, there are a few small glitches as
Susan has pointed out.

I can't wait until I don't have to use the proprietary drivers. The
other problem is, as usual, every time there is a kernel upgrade you
must reinstall the drivers; however, this is to be expected.

bug is "where it's at." This is where a) the ideas are, b) the Answers

[Bug 358017] Re: Answer doesn't allow you to remove replies

2009-04-09 Thread Craig Huffstetler
I agree, it is a valid concern around certain sections of Launchpad.

A "timer" could be initiated for submitted content, say 1 minute. I've
seen this on other sites (AJAX-y) where you are allowed to edit your
content or even delete it for X amount of time after you have submitted
it.

This would be a nice feature to have in Bugs and in Answers. I am not
very familiar with the other Launchpad Foundation systems, and their
interworkings, but I at least know they do apply to Launchpad Bug
Comments and Launchpad Answers ("Comments," "Answers," "Information
Requests").

Also, a user provided quite a bit of information to me on this as well in LP

It does seem only to exist in Jaunty, as we all seemed to have confirmed

I'm pretty convinced that this is not only a problem with usb-creator
current, at this point, but also with the lpia hd-media kernel.

[Bug 272802] Re: pidgin does not load / start

2009-04-02 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Jngoi and Ken,

In a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) can you both run
this command:

pidgin -d > pidgin -d

You will find the file "pidgin -d" in your directory where the terminal
was when you started it (most likely ~/ , which is short for your home
directory).

This is simply starting pigdin in debugging mode and listing what is
going on for us. Hopefully it will give us some insight into what is
happening.

Thanks,

Craig

[Bug 259990] Re: Brasero does not copy multisession CD:s properly

2009-03-31 Thread Craig Huffstetler
This is still a problem in Jaunty Beta.

Brasero will not make a 1:1 copy of a CD. It claims it is "done" and
empties the /tmp folder so you can not even restart using the /tmp files
it supposed has copied. It just burns one disk and stops on the first
session.

This really needs to be addressed.

[Bug 337775] Re: no "usability sane" way to reboot jaunty without mouse

2009-03-31 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Users do not expect such behavior to exist. I would not remove my only
way to shutdown/logoff/etc. either.

And what if some users want both to exist? I think they should have the
option. I think the name of the "Fast User Switcher Applet" says for
itself its "purpose." We shouldn't dictate the "rules" to them for their
menu systems.

Overall, I think it's poor user interface design and should be
corrected.

[Bug 346907] Re: [jaunty] Shutdown, Restart, Etc. (Leave Functions) Not Found on "System" Sub-Menu

2009-03-27 Thread Craig Huffstetler
** Description changed:

In Jaunty the System > Leave function was taken off of the menu. I
believe this is a usability and accessibility mistake.

The only way to access this now the less-than-vital fast-user-switch-
applet. The fast-user-switch-applet is not accessible except by mouse.
This poses accessibility problems for users with disabilities and users
that simply want to user their keyboards. As far as usability is
concerned, or simply users who do not want the fast-user-switch-applet

[Bug 6270] Re: [i855] no support for TV-Out on 8xx chipsets

2009-03-26 Thread Craig Huffstetler
@Jason

I'm sorry if I was unclear and you thought I was referencing just the
810. I was referencing a possible solution for the 855 series that
people are reporting problems with.

One case I am referring to (that is attached to this bug report) can be found
here:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+question/65430

The card I am referencing is an Intel 855 GM/E. Apparently this bug also
affects Intel 855s (GM/GME). Some users have attempted to roll-back
their drivers to the i810 drivers in an effort just to use their S-Video
/TV-Out signal with no success.

See:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=849994&highlight=855gm+svideo
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=849994&highlight=855gm+svideo
He posted his conf file here: http://paste.ubuntuusers.de/389739/
Apparently, it worked for him. But it only works for select users. I obviously
do not know why, if I did we may have a solution.

Sorry to be unclear.

[Bug 6270] Re: [i855] no support for TV-Out on 8xx chipsets

2009-03-26 Thread Craig Huffstetler
It's definitely going to be up to the community.

There are many questions on this, many work-arounds that may or may not
work for users in the forums, the Answers community and ubuntu-users
list, and this has been since 2005? I could barely believe it when I
found this bug when trying to help another user just get the S-Video/TV
Out to work. Now the i810 "work around" doesn't work because the driver
is no longer available, easily at least, from the repositories in 8.10.

And in any since it can be a dead-end because only limited users
reported success with using the i810 driver.

I really think this should have a priority higher than "Wishlist."

[Bug 122031] Re: Cannot make copy of audio CD

2009-03-24 Thread Craig Huffstetler
I have come across this three times in the past month in Launchpad
Answers and on the Ubuntu-Users list.

I have encouraged these users to file bug reports; however, it seems the
outcome for most of these people is to simply change to another
application (because it is the easiest course of action).

The only bug that I can see in Gnome's bug tracking system, upstream, is
the bug linked above. However, is anyone working on this upstream
definitively or is more information needed? It seems like there is a
lack of information.

[Bug 346907] [NEW] [jaunty] Shutdown, Restart, Etc. (Leave Funtions) Not Found on "System" Sub-Menu

2009-03-22 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Public bug reported:

In Jaunty the System > Leave function was taken off of the menu. I
believe this is a usability and accessibility mistake.

The only way to access this now the less-than-vital fast-user-switch-
applet. The fast-user-switch-applet is not accessible except by mouse.
This poses accessibility problems for users with disabilities and users
that simply want to user their keyboards. As far as usability is
concerned, or simply users who do not want the fast-user-switch-applet
installed, I find this of far greater concern.

I believe logically and for user interface reasons, for usability and
accessibility, the System > Leave Function (for shutdown, restart,
suspend, hibernate, or whatever the function may be) should be place

[Bug 337775] Re: no "usability sane" way to reboot jaunty without mouse

2009-03-22 Thread Craig Huffstetler
I myself think "Leave" functions, specially shutdown/reboot, etc.,
should be added back under the system menu as this is simple usability.
I can not believe it was taken out.

It should not have to exist in a panel that users may or may not want in
their panel. It is also an accessibility mistake if this panel is not
accessible via keyboard.

[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV

2009-03-21 Thread Craig Huffstetler
A user on the Answers system, ziggy1194, using Ubuntu live cd 8.10 i386
is having the exact same problem and getting the error:

init: rc- default main process( 5304) terminated with status 255

Which leaves me to believe that this is not directly related to the
video card, however something else. I wish there were more details in
the error. Given that it does not contain "SEGV" it leads me to
conclusion these are not the same bugs, however they are linked for the
time being as they have the same affect -- no installation and full stop
/hang-up of the system. But, as I said it does not seem like the video
card is causing the issue.

We are attempting installation using other methods. We will see what
happens. - CH

[Bug 342345] [NEW] [Jaunty] plasma-widget-weather does not allow addition of multiple locations

Public bug reported:

When attempting to add multiple weather locations, the Plasmoid Weather

only one is allowed per Plasmoid? If so, the language needs to be
clearer in the Plasmoid.

[Bug 284288] Re: mencoder crashed with SIGSEGV in avcodec_close()

2009-03-06 Thread Craig Huffstetler
Mencoder causes a crash when using commas to write a menu system
(however, I can pipe separate the values) and it will not crash.

Another option, as the above bug reported pointed out, is to select the
"use optimizations for multiple core processors" option. This will
ensure that mencoder does not crash even if I am comma separating the
values to be written. I just retested it.

It wrote all the way through to an .ISO file without any problem. We
also both have NVidia cards. I, however, am running Jaunty A5.
