[Bug 237485] [NEW] [wishlist] Ubuntu grid

2008-06-04 Thread CristianCantoro
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I've just started using "Vinagre" Remote desktop tool and I've found it very
nice.
I was wondering: what about a system to allow people to share their own PCs
resources among them?
I mean maybe a part of my hard disk is free and so I can make it available for
every other user in the project. In the moment I'll need an extra space for
some reason I can access this "grid" and request for it.
I was thinking at something for disk space or other resources, like what BOINC
is for distributed computing (well, these are computing resources).
Note that this will be different from P2P systems: user don't share the files,
they share the disk space.
Ok, I think it's a little an utopian project... but that's it! (the idea come
from "The Grid" that is being built among universities to share resources (not
only computing resources as far as I've understood) for CERN's LHC experiments).

[Bug 237485] Re: [wishlist] Ubuntu grid

2008-06-05 Thread CristianCantoro
Yes, I agree with you.
In fact I was thinking that the best would be a little different from
this first idea. With P2P system and e-mails people can share/send files
one to each other but the problem is that in these way there can be
milion copies of the same file. So, why don't find a way to have a few
copies of a file in some computers and, if a need a specific file, I can
download it temporarily from these computers but I won't have save it
permanently on my PC. Obviusly, everybody share a little quota of their
disk space and so the system is equal for all users. The main thing is
that there are only few copies of a file.
This will be mostly suitable for files that are not intended to be
changed like PDFs, audios, videos, presentations...
This will be suitable also in a smaller scale, for example... in a
company a system like this can be adopted to share files among all
employees. I remember that some times ago in a company in which I worked
there had been some problems because there where a lot of copies of same
files (prevalently ppt presentations).
The problems could be:
* availability of the files 24h/day - 365/year
* long time to download files
* need to repeat download every time for the same file (I mean, if I
want to re-read a PDF, I'll have to download it once again): this could
be avoided with something like "my favourites" that shorten the download
time.

[Bug 237485] Re: [wishlist] Ubuntu grid

2008-06-05 Thread CristianCantoro
Yes, I know about Bittorent, but it's a P2P system, ins't it? You search
a file then download and save it to your computer.
I had in mind something slightly different, but perhaps I didn't catch
it completely.
In any case... I think you're right once again... so could you tell me
how I close this bug report, please?
Thank you for your answers.

Cristian

[Bug 806403] Re: Libreoffice basic function "cdbl" ignores decimal numbers

2012-11-04 Thread CristianCantoro
It is obviously a "localization" problem, I experience the same issue having
this environment configuration:
cristian@cristian-F5N:~$ echo $LANG
it_IT.utf8
cristian@cristian-F5N:~$ echo $LANGUAGE
it_IT:it_CH:it:en
cristian@cristian-F5N:~$ echo $LC_MESSAGES
it_IT.UTF-8

And having Italian set as default language in LibreOffice.

My LibreOffice version is 1:3.4.5-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 11.10
It seems to be a long standing bug.

[Bug 1029309] [NEW] [Wishlist] Adding search box in panel interface

2012-07-26 Thread CristianCantoro
Public bug reported:

As of version 1.8.0 clicking on the Tomboy icon on the applet in the panel
displays a menu with a "search in all notes ..." item.
An usefull feature may be to substitute that with a search field displaing the
results right below in the same menu.

Thanks for your help,

Cristian

Both:

 sudo poweroff

and

correctly shutdown the computer.

[Bug 711192] Re: tomboy sync with ubuntuone fails without any detail information

2012-10-07 Thread CristianCantoro
I got the same error on Ubuntu 11.10 with Tomboy version 1.8.0, a dialog
said that note sync failed but the "details" box was empty. Quitting
tomboy and starting it from command line, after trying to sync notes I
saw:

[ERROR 15:10:43.880] Synchronization failed with the following exception: A
note with this title already exists: Oggi: mercoledì 22 agosto 2012

So deleting the named note (after copying its content somewhere else)
solved the problem, but this messag should be in the dialog box.

[Bug 870752] [NEW] power management setting overwritten by gnome power management settings

2011-10-08 Thread CristianCantoro
Public bug reported:

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 and I have installed xfce4-session.
When closing my laptop lid it suspended so I modified the power
management preferences with xfce4-power-manager-settings. But even after
a restart the preference was not effective, i.e. closing my laptop lid
still lead my pc to suspend instead of blanking screen. So I logged in
with the default session (either GNOME, or Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D session)
and I saw that the power management said "when lid is closed" ->
"Suspend". I have changed that and now when I close my lid it blanks
screen.

Please ask for any confing files that may help.

[Bug 890456] [NEW] cups-pdf fails to produce pdf if the ~/PDF is symbolically linked

Public bug reported:

I have read that the default location where pdf file produced by cups-

my system pointing to ~/Documents/PDF. This produced the following error
in the log:

Mon Nov 14 11:55:38 2011 [ERROR] failed to set file mode for PDF file (non
fatal) (/home/cristian/PDF/Pagina_di_test.pdf)

note: "/home/cristian" is my home directory, the PDF folder and the
target directory "/home/cristian/Documents/PDF" have full rwx permission
for all users (changed on purposte to test this error).

Please note that even if the log said " PDF creation successfully
finished" no pdf file was produced.

I have renamed my symbolic link and created a new PDF folder in my home
"~/PDF" and everything works fine, but the system doesn't work with
symbolic directories.

[Bug 547141] Re: GDM broken after update

2010-03-27 Thread CristianCantoro
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 516520 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516520

Sorry to be late in my answer. I don't know if this problem is the same as bug
#516520.
I get to login screen quite normally (I get some warning while booting but this
was happening also before this problem showed up). In the login window I notice
the option "session" is missing, then after login I am in failsafe mode (but I
did not boot in failsafe mode) having only xterm. X is working, i.e. I can
launch programs normally (I even watched a video using vlc, to say... but no
sound) but the windows doesn't not have the title bar, and I can't
move/resize,minimize them. If I launch a program a window just appears in some
spot where it is doomed to stay with a definite size (this differs between
different programs, I think this depends on some predefined configuration of
said programs). So I thought it was a gdm problem. I can provide any
information you want (I can connect to the internet from terminal and use
firefox) if you can guide me I will be happy to help.
This problem seems not to be kernel-related since I tried booting another
kernel (2.6.31-14) and got the same behavior.
Tried to reinstall gdm (using aptitude) but nothing changed, please note that
my system is fully updated.

[Bug 547141] Re: GDM broken after update

2010-03-27 Thread CristianCantoro
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 516520 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516520

I have to say that besides the fact that I haven't had any login problem
I am getting most of the errors Tom is getting while running sudo
gdmsetup (see bug #516520) and I (too) can't unlock the window that
appears. So, I finally believe this is a duplicate of bug #516520

[Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop

2010-03-27 Thread CristianCantoro
Same issue for me with 2.6.32-17 kernel on a 64 bit machine with little
differences: I haven't experienced any "login loop", bu t the problem seems the
same. After an update I rebooted and now this is my situation: I get to login
screen quite normally (I get some warning while booting but this was happening
also before this problem showed up). In the login window I notice the option
"session" is missing, then after login I am in failsafe mode (but I did not
boot in failsafe mode) having only xterm. X is working, i.e. I can launch
programs normally (I even watched a video using vlc, to say... but no sound)
but the windows do not have the title bar, and I can't move/resize,minimize
them. If I launch a program a window just appears in some spot where it is
doomed to stay with a definite size (this differs between different programs, I
think this depends on some predefined configuration of said programs).

[Bug 512173] Re: gnome-screensaver-gl-helper crashed with SIGSEGV in _fini()

2010-03-29 Thread CristianCantoro
I am affected from this bug and I have an nVidia graphics card (but I haven't
enabled the driver, yet) too.
Furthermore, is this bug a duplicate of bug #550450?

[Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop

2010-03-29 Thread CristianCantoro
I tried to install kdm and, in the configure screen, I choose kdm as the
default window manager. the login changed to KDE-style and I was able to use
KDE normally. Please note that the login screen did not give me the possibility
to choose GNOME session (gdm was installed, though).
I tried to purge/install gdm swithching from version gdm 2.29.92-0ubuntu6 to
gdm 2.20 (I installed package gdm-2.20 via synaptic)m, still no luck.

Today I decided to install "ubuntu-desktop" package which requires gdm
as a dependency and /voilà/ my gdm (and GNOME desktop is back).

For that matters:
1) after logging in apport signaled me bug #418083.
2) I had graphics driver (for nVidia) disabled, I am renabling them and seeing
what happens
3) Also bugs (which may be unrelated) bug #543484 and bug #550450

[Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop

2010-03-29 Thread CristianCantoro
Can't say if it is an indipendent bug or it is related, after reboot the boot
get stucked.
A similar workaround works for me: I can change console (e.g. tty1) login and
the start gdm. For further reference you can find my syslog attached.

2010-03-31 Thread CristianCantoro
With updates the system is fully fuctional.
ii gdm 2.29.92-0ubuntu9
ii kdm 4:4.4.1-0ubuntu7
I should reconfigure to set GDM as default (now I boot with KDM). News will
follow.

[Bug 532542] Re: [lucid] flashplugin-installer doesn't work with Firefox 3.6

> Renamed link to flashplugin with lib prefix and now it works for me!

May I ask where the said link points? I have no such link in
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins (more... that dir is empty!)
Furthermore, unless I have both flashplugin-installer and flashplugin-nonfree
packages (see above) installed I can't see any significative occurence of
flashplugin or libflash in my sistem (i.e. I got package info files and so on,
but no libs it seems)

[Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop - SYSTEM BROKEN

2010-03-31 Thread CristianCantoro
@Tom: Lucid is now unstable, I think these things are quite normal when
you do beta test... at least I think you should be aware that is more
risky to use (and headache-prone), so you can always use previous stable
version instead of use other OSes ;).

Anyway, got the same behaviour after KERNEL update:
crist...@cristian-asus:~$ uname -a
Linux cristian-asus 2.6.32-18-generic #27-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 26 21:13:44 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

now I am in KDE with no possibiliuty to choose GNOME in the login
screen. Please note that during boot I got messages saying that the
nVidia driver could not be loaded, this happened the previous time, also
(i.e. I got the problem the first time after kernel upgrade and after
reboot it complained about nVidia drivers).

GDM is still at the same version as before.
crist...@cristian-asus:~$ dpkg -l gdm
[...]
ii gdm2.29.92-0ubuntu9

Another question: I am "forcing" kernel upgrades (i.e. when I apt-get
update/upgrade I saw [both times] "the following packages would not be updated"
and linux-headers ... where among them.
To install them I had to sudo apt-get install linux-headers ...
Am I doing right, I mean is "deprecated" to do such thing? (and if it is, how
much it is?)

[Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop - SYSTEM BROKEN

2010-03-31 Thread CristianCantoro
Maybe I got it!
I had to reinstall (yet again!) the ubuntu-desktop package:

Note that I had to **install** it and it wasn't saying "already install, he
just installed it has if it did not have it (and I believe it wasn't having
it)... see attachment to look at what had been installed
ii ubuntu-desktop 1.193

After rebot, no complaint about graphics card, GNOME session available.

So I believe there is something in kernel updates messing with ubuntu-desktop
package in a strange but reproducible way,
should I change the title to this bug?

Re: [Bug 516520] Re: lucid lynx - login screen stuck in a loop - SYSTEM BROKEN

2010-03-31 Thread CristianCantoro
@Tom, did you tried installing kdm (the KDE desktop manager)? That
always worked for me, anyway it seems that you are having trouble also
with authentication. Have you tried login in with single user mode?
That automatically logs you in as root if I am correct, so you can at
least avoid the first step of the problem. You just have to choose an
appropriate boot option.

I have this folder but the name in my case is /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3pre
I think this is a slightly different version.

Please note that this folder contains:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   25 2010-03-16 10:19 plugins ->
../firefox-addons/plugins
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   31 2010-03-16 10:19 searchplugins ->
../firefox-addons/searchplugins

both /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins and
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins are empty!

Also /usr/lib/firefox/plugin is empty on my system:
crist...@cristian-asus:/usr/lib/firefox/plugins$ ls -al
totale 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-02-23 12:22 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2010-01-2
8 09:31 ..

> /etc/alternatives/firefox-flashplugin
> -> /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so

I have no firefox-flashplugin under /etc/alternatives, here you can
see the only occurrences for "firefox" I can find in that folder:
crist...@cristian-asus:/etc/alternatives$ ls -l | grep firefox
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  49 2010-01-27 18:49 firefox-homepage ->
/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 2010-01-27 18:49 firefox-homepage-locales
-> /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu

> I think there is two problems with flashplugin-installer:
> 1) It places link in wrong place (or firefox is installed in wrong
> place :D)

I may add that, in my case, it even doesn't create links! (as I was
saying above I don't find nothing useful if I search "flashplugin" on
my system).

Probably this is a bug in skype... (v. 2.1.0.81-1) but it is in the

Re: [Bug 532542] Re: [lucid] flashplugin-installer doesn't work with Firefox 3.6

2010-05-12 Thread CristianCantoro
After the update four of five days ago I nticed that Firefox was now
proposing me to install flashplugin automatically (I mean clicking
"install missing plugins" and following the wizard). Previously when I
clicked on that nothing was proposed.

I tried to install the package but the system was givin me the error
that "flashplugin-install" was already installed on the system, su I
purged (via aptitude) the "flashplugin-installer" package and
reinstalled it trough the wizard in Firefox.

Now everything works.

Here the version now installed on my system:
flashplugin-installer 10.0.45.2ubunt Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

This bud is fixed for me.

[Bug 199687] Re: [Intrepid] [Hardy] Asus F5N laptop freezes on restart but will shut down

2010-02-18 Thread CristianCantoro
I tried the kexec[1] workaround on a ASUS X50N with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic
Koala), it /does/ reboot but then it warns about the fact it can't load
the graphics card driver (nVidia Geforce 7000M) and it asks to start in
low-res mode. I have the proprietary drivers enabled.
