[Bug 1463120] Re: Failure to boot if fstab disk mounts fail
I work for a major educational system that utilizes Ubuntu Server (14.04, 16.04 LTS) instances on the Amazon Web Services cloud for critical infrastructure. This bug has come up a few times, where an admin has a typo or other error in /etc/fstab, pertaining to a non-OS filesystem (like an EFS data volume), and as a result, the system fails to boot. On a physical machine, this wouldn't be a big deal: press "S" to skip that mountpoint, and keep booting; or if that doesn't work, boot from live media and fix fstab. However, a cloud instance doesn't grant you those options: it hangs forever, and you have no physical keyboard, USB port, or optical drive with which to workaround the problem. I normally wouldn't suggest a certain priority on a bug, but this is a severe liability for anyone running Ubuntu in a cloud computing environment. Therefore, I must respectfully request that this bug be elevated to "Major" or "Critical" status. [Bug 1532097] Re: Upgrade from 14.04 to 15.04 failed due to ubuntu-desktop not being installed
Odd. I originally titled this bug report with the error message I got, regarding a file having been modified in /etc; but I never edited that file (hadn't heard of it until the error message). I would think that the solution in such an instance might be to simply overwrite the file, unless doing so is likely to cause problems for the user's data or installed (still-compatible) programs. I'm sorry to report that I did a clean installation before realizing that I would need to provide further details about the possible bug. (I was on a time crunch to get the machine updated.) [Bug 146367] Re: An extra 'executable' bit is seen when POSIX ACL is used by Samba
Sorry to revive an old bug, but I've recently run into this problem. Using the following in smb.conf, when I create a file as a remote user, the Owner's permissions are always set to executable on files (rwxrw- rw-), whereas they should be rw-rw-rw-. [DnD Public] path = "/mnt/PERSONAL/Dane/RPGs/DnD Public" comment = Players can put stuff in here writeable = yes guest ok = yes guest only = yes force create mode = 0666 force directory mode = 0777 I've tried it with "force user = dane" in there (since that's my local login, which is set-up in samba's database), but keep getting the same result. Since this is a security problem, depending on the context, and since there's already a patch released upstream, at the link above, I was hoping this could get fixed in a security release sometime soon. (The patch was posted to that page in 2006--if this is, indeed, the same bug.) I might end up patching and compiling Samba, myself, but I'd really rather not dump a pile of "make install" into my filesystem tree (and that wouldn't fix the bug in the repository, besides). [Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj
Notable correction: I should have written 3Gbit/s SATA, not 3GB/s. This amounts to a maximum transfer rate of around 45MB/s. Correction to the information request above: please run badblocks BEFORE any of the other steps, including looking in Disk Utility or running smarctl. (You may have to install smartmontools [spelling?] to have that command available when the time comes.) If you run badblocks first, it will ensure that all sector replacements made from reserved blocks to compensate for read errors during the badblocks test (which reads every block on the drive) will get logged, and thereby provide a more accurate picture of whether bad sectors exist, but have been replaced and hidden/disabled by SMART. This is especially relevant if SMART wasn't already enabled in BIOS, as it will need an opportunity to start gathering data for the log that you will be checking later via Disk Utility and smartctl. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267913 Title: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. [Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj
I've just determined that my Windows 7 hard drive (750GB, NTFS, /dev/sdb) was faulty. It had around 100 bad sectors reported in the SMART logs, according to the Disk Utility (System > Administration > Disk Utility [in Natty]), and I discovered that the huge amount of I/O wait occurred only when I was accessing this drive, especially for a long data transfer (copy/move, etc.). Notably, after the first few hundred MB at around 45MB/s, it slowed abruptly to a crawl of about 5MB/s via 3GB/s SATA. It seemed to make little difference whether I had it mounted read-only (which is faster for NTFS on Linux), or r/w, and was equally slow in Windows 7 and in Linux (Ubuntu Natty). I've since replaced the drive with a new 1TB SATA HD after testing it for bad sectors (using 'sudo badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx'), and have noticed a dramatic speed increase. I've not yet checked whether the dmesg logs report this same error message as before, but I'll check when I get around to it. So, here's my request for information from those experiencing this bug: -Please ensure that SMART monitoring is enabled for all your drives, in BIOS. -Open System > Administration > Disk Utility. Click on each of your drives, in turn, and click on the button for its SMART status. Please copy and paste any error entries you see, as well as anything that stands out to you. -Please run the following command on each of your hard drives. You can do this on multiple drives at once, although I recommend not running many more instances than you have CPU cores. It's OK (and safe) to run this on mounted drives, even while data is being written to them. 'sudo badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx' (Replace "sdx" with the device name for the hard drive you intend to test. Use only one drive per command, and DO NOT include the partition number--i.e. type "/dev/sda", and NOT "/dev/sda1".) Post all output from these commands to this thread. If any bad sectors at all are found--which will be noted by their block number--then your drive is bad, and should be replaced. This can usually be done under warranty, via the manufacturer's (Seagate, Western Digital, etc.--not Best Buy or similar). [Bug 195630] Re: Can't change permissions on a folder with nautilus.
Thanks for posting, alexsimps. Indeed, I have found the umask=022 option to be very useful on NTFS filesystems in the past. Unfortunately, it's with my '/' partition, which is ext4 that I'm noticing the problem. I haven't been able to change any permissions on my NTFS partition using Nautilus, either, but the real problem is with not being able to change user-owned files on my '/' partition (partitularly in /home/dane/blahblahblah). I don't really need to mess with NTFS permissions in Linux very often, so that's not such a big problem. I see that this bug was first reported in 2008. Depending on how many people are affected, does anybody think it should be marked as "high" priority? (Not trying to be impatient, but I do think this is quite a problem for the systems/users affected.) [Bug 285063] Re: dmraid mirror in 8.04.1 shows up as three entries in Removable Media - should only show as one
Update (again): I have just tried taking the entry for /media/PERSONAL out of my /etc/fstab (by commenting it out with a '#'), and the erroneous drive entry has disappeared! It would seem that this is a problem with whatever software provides entries for the "Places" menu not cross- checking its own generated data (however it does that--I'm not a developer...) with /etc/fstab entries. This would seem to indicate that (unless there's some way that I don't know of), one cannot statically mount a non-system partition (like "/" or swap) without this bug cropping up. Do any of you know a work-around for this? Is it possible (feasible) to fix this bug without too much trouble? [Bug 285063] Re: dmraid mirror in 8.04.1 shows up as three entries in Removable Media - should only show as one
Update: I have just upgraded from 9.10 (amd64) to 10.04, and immediately thereafter, to 10.10. I have reconfigured my drives so that the mirror is no longer in any kind of array (dm, or otherwise), but so that there are now 2 separate partitions (one on each drive), labeled "PERSONAL" and "PERSONAL2", respectively. I have removed mdadm and dmraid from my system using 'aptitude remove ...', and the odd drive entry still appears in the "Places" menu. PERSONAL2 does not show up as 2 drives; there is only one "Places" entry for it. I have attached a screenshot for illustration. The erroneous entry is positioned to the left of the mouse cursor, and looks like a "smooth" hard drive. Here is my current /etc/fstab file: [code] # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier # for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name # devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5). # # proc/proc procdefaults0 0 # / was on /dev/sda1 during installation UUID=6730efad-369b-40ff-ac3d-85295772bd13 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation UUID=a8e4b372-85bf-452f-b51b-c7a53f2c9e23 noneswapsw 0 0 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0 /dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto,exec,sync,utf8 0 0 UUID=00e41414-2b88-47cd-9916-698606d5b2d1 /media/PERSONAL ext3 rw,user,defaults0 2 [/code] It may be worth noting that in /etc/fstab there is an entry for /media/PERSONAL, but not for /media/PERSONAL2. PERSONAL2 is my rdiff- backup "mirror" drive (not a mirror in the RAID sense), and has the same formatting, but a different UUID, and slightly different directory structure. I hope this helps. [Bug 195630] Re: Can't change permissions on a folder with nautilus.
I just upgraded from 9.10 (amd64) to 10.04, and then immediately from 10.04 to 10.10. I have this same problem: When I go to Places > Home Folder > right-click on Public > Permissions tab and try to change any of the "File Access" drop-downs, they all immediately revert to "---". I have tried using 'chmod dane:dane /home/dane/Public -R' and 'chown a+rwx /home/dane/Public -R' with no effect. I have also tried running nautilus with 'sudo nautilus /home/dane', and have not been able to change the file permissions. The "Allow executing file as program" box is highlighted (solid orange color), but cannot be checked or un-checked. I will try to attach a screenshot of this. As a result of this, I think, I am unable to use any nautilus-share functionality that requires a change in permissions, such as "Allow others to create and delete files in this folder" and "Guest access (for people without a user account)". Whenever I try to use such an option, nautilus entirely crashes (desktop icons flicker and then come back, and all folder windows close). I have tried purging (sudo aptitude purge ...) and re-installing samba, samba-common, samba-common-bin, nautilus- share, nautilus-gksu, nautilus-open-terminal, nautilus-sendto, and nautilus-sendto-empathy; as well as purging, killing nautilus (killall nautilus), starting nautilus, and trying to change permissions without reinstalling those packages. None of this has worked. I have also tried reinstalling (sudo aptitude reinstall ...) nautilus, nautilus-data, nautilus-actions, and nautilus-scripts-manager (then killing and restarting nautilus), but none of this has worked, either. I have checked my fstab configuration, and my / partition (on which /home/dane resides) does not have any unusual mount options. I'll attach this as well. I would REALLY like to get this functionality back (which I had in 9.10). Any suggestions? Need any more information? Thanks for the continued interest in this bug. The computer that I'm writing about is my wife's school laptop; as such, I can't reload a new operating system on it during the semester (which ends in late December). Do you think it would be sufficient/helpful for me to test it using a live CD or USB drive? I'm pretty sure I can get it to boot and run a test, but I'd first like to know if this method of testing would be helpful. [Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port
Excellent post! Thanks for making the how-to, Shane. You may want to consider posting this to the Ubuntu wiki, with a title something like, "Making NFS work with Ubuntu-CE-Firewall". That would make it a little easier to find. -- need way to specify the lockd port https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port
I found this while searching the mountd man pages: -P portnum or --port portnum Makes mountd listen on port portnum instead of some random port. By default, mountd will listen on the mount/udp port specified in /etc/services, or, if that is undefined, on some arbitrary port number below 1024. (note the CAPITAL "P") I looked in /etc/services (on jaunty) and saw this: sunrpc 111/tcp portmapper # RPC 4.0 portmapper sunrpc 111/udp portmapper ... nfs 2049/tcp# Network File System nfs 2049/udp# Network File System Do you think it would wok if you were to open those ports in the firewall (assuming you haven't already)? I think that once the connection is established, the random port number becomes an established/related connection. I could be wrong. It's been a long time since I've messed with all this. -- need way to specify the lockd port https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port

[Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port
ack...AleksanderAdamowski already posted on this. modprobe.conf *should* work, but /etc/modprobe.d/options is probably a better choice. Anyway, I agree that there should be something done about this as per Shane Rice's suggestion. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 303601 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303601 Additional note: I work at a local computer store, and I've remembered to try Alt+Sysrq+k on about 4-5 machines that are booted onto the Hardy live CD at work. (We use that disk for some of our work.) On all of the various machines that I tested (different ages, makes, and models), that key combination works as expected in the TTYs, but not in X. This includes trying Alt+Sysrq+k in both the GDM login screen (after logging out), and in the Gnome session. I will take another look at this. I recall that when I went to install 8.10 (64-bit) on this system (after a motherboard upgrade, but the drive configuration is constant), I could not install at all from a CD. I don't recall the details of the problem (I'll look into it again), but I ended up having to make a live USB drive to install from instead. [Bug 303601] Re: REISUB is broken
Hello. I made this post on a duplicate bug; I thought it might be useful to post it to this one as well. I have only tried it on my home Desktop computer, a Core 2 Duo machine with an nVidia 9600GT (by Asus) graphics card, using the proprietary nVidia driver; a logitech Cordless Desktop keyboard and (optical) mouse (model Y-RAJ56A, with sysrq on the prtscr key); running Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates (but no backports). I have also tried using the right alt key as "altgr" instead of the prtscr/sysrq key, as suggested at some sites (which I don't remember what the addresses were or how I got there...). Additionally, I have tried a number of other key combinations, such as leftalt+shift+prtscr/sysrq+k, to no avail. I should note, however, that my TTYs are all functional (F1-F6), and respond as expected to alt+sysrq+R/E/I/S/U/B and alt+sysrq+K. It's only in the Gnome GUI that there is no affect, other than asking the user whether to save a screenshot. :-p I have also tried setting different keyboard models (us105, Logitech Cordless Desktop [and "alternate"], and Logitech Cordless Desktop Optical), different combinations of "alt/win key behavior" and "compose key position" (in system>preferences>keyboard), mapping "print screen/screen shot" to different key combinations (in system>preferences>keyboard shortcuts), and lots of various button mashing. :-) Please let me/us (Michael et al) know if there's any further information that may be of assistance in solving this problem. With ctrl+alt+backspace disappearing in the next release, I think it's going to be important to get this resolved as soon as is reasonably possible. (Please note that I don't mean to put undue pressure on anybody by saying this.) [Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open
It seems in Hardy that it's not possible to drag the icon from Computer to the Destkop. It gives me this error (in "details" of the error window): Can't open mountable file. Incidentally, when I went to mount a floppy, the icon in Computer changed to a generic removable drive icon, and the name changed to "DP" (which is the label of the disk), then the icon changed back to the floppy icon, as one might expect. Oddly enough, though, the icon and the name stayed as the generic icon, and the label stayed "DP" when the volume was unmounted through the GUI (right-click). This may or may not be a related bug... [Bug 220349] [NEW] Hardy - nvidia mcp51 ata controller: slow access to SATA and PATA drives
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source I have a MSI P7N-SLI Platinum motherboard. It has an nVidia MCP51 IDE controller, according to `lspci`. This controller, according to google (and the solution I found) is actually 2 controllers: nVidia 430 (MCP) and JMicron JMB363. See this for more details: http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/msi_p7n_platinum/index.shtml Symptoms: -extremely slow optical disk burning -it takes forever to copy, delete, or create large files -tracker is REALLY slow, to the point of being practically useless. I am using Hardy Heron Beta, fully updated, as of April 21, 2008, AMD64 edition, on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have several drives attached directly to the 2 PATA controllers on the motherboard: -primary master: 250GB HD -primary slave: 18X DVDRW drive -sec. master: removable HD bay (various older HDs) -sec. slave: 16X DVDRW drive I have 1 SATA drive connected to the motherboard at SATA channel 2: a 320GB drive. I also have installed a Promise Ultra133 TX2 PATA controller card with 2 PATA channels. Only channel 1 has connected drives: -master: 40GB hard drive -slave: 80GB hard drive The larger drives (250 PATA and 320 SATA) are pretty new; the rest are not, but all drives pass `badblocks -c 4096 -svnb 4096 /dev/xxx` with no errors. Here's the workaround I manged to find: -compile my own kernel based on `apt-get source linux-source-2.6.24`, using the "old debian method" from the WIKI. Attached are the old (NOT working) config from /boot/, and the new (working) config that I made using `make menuconfig` in the kernel source directory. Note that the sound drivers were, for some reason not set up properly in the original .config (as far as I could tell), but oddly enough, worked out-of-the- box. -blacklist the module, "ata_generic" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. (Added "blacklist ata_generic" to the last line.) Please let me know if you need some more info, and I'll do my best to give it to you. Thanks for your attention to this bug. It's been a while, so I don't have any details to give you about the boot-up at that time, but I do recall that it did boot properly. The main problem (as far as I've figured it out) is that my Promise Ultra133TX2 PCI ATA133 card and my nVidia CK804 rev. f3 SATA controller keep getting their attached hard drives mixed-up. In the blkid information in my April 4th, 2007 post, the aforementioned drives are as follows: /dev/sdc1: LABEL="PERSONAL" UUID="88813472-f156-4ee6-b8e9-41540ff07486" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sdb1: TYPE="ntfs" /dev/sda1: LABEL="PERSONAL" UUID="88813472-f156-4ee6-b8e9-41540ff07486" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sdb5: LABEL="BACKUP" UUID="438E-1221" TYPE="vfat" To my recollection, I have not changed any drive configurations since then, although I have switched to a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 7.04 on /dev/hdc1 (via a reinstall). My hardware (cables, jumpers, etc.) has not changed at all. You may also note that the UUIDs of my various partitions (except for hdc) have not changed, as I have not since reformatted or moved them. As for the contradictory mount points, I have configured them to how they (as far as I can tell) should be, which is how they show up in my fully-updated Gentoo installation (as of a week or so ago), which I installed about 1.5 years ago. If I am not mistaken, sda should be my first SCSI/SATA device, which is on my onboard nVidia SATA controller. sdb and sdc should be my first and second drives on my PCI IDE (PATA) card, respectively. [Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open
OK. I've installed Ubuntu 7.04 onto my laptop, and followed the above reproduction instructions. The bug is still there. It's not as much of an issue, since the floppy icon is now created on the desktop when media is inserted, but still, I find it annoying that the custom-made icon doesn't work. It simply says, "unable to mount volume" when double- clicked, with or without the media already mounted. [Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open
I am using Dapper Drake. I still have this problem, though it has changed somewhat since I made this report. Now when I insert a floppy into the USB drive, it will automount and open it, which is very nice. However, when I go to open it again (having first closed the window that came up showing the files) using the icon I created on the desktop (not the one that it auto-created), it gives me this error: Unable to mount the selected floppy drive. error: /dev/sda is already mounted to /media/floppy error: could not execute pmount If I click on the auto-created icon it works fine, but if I unmount ("eject") the volume and then click on the icon that I made, it will mount it again, creating another icon, and then not open a window with the files on the drive. Repeated clicking on the homemade icon produces the error above. Clicking on the auto-created icon opens up a window showing the files. Since an icon is now created on the desktop when a floppy is inserted, this is not such a problem for me; it's really just an annoyance that I can't have a floppy icon always on the desktop for mounting/unmounting the volume at will instead of having to remove/insert the disk.
