Jaunty is using a different series of drivers, I don't know if the fix
has made it into jaunty yet. The very latest update for intrepid does
have it.

2009-01-22 Thread Daniel FitzGibbons
Good news everyone! A (real) fix has been found upstream that should
free us from the if(!on) hack. It should be merged to the official
driver soon and hopefully be in the 2.6.1 release. Also, let us all
hope that this makes it into Jaunty... it's not too late to get the 2.6
driver in is it?

[Bug 310345] Re: [iGM45] Desktop becomes unresposive when using intel driver

2008-12-22 Thread Daniel FitzGibbons
I took a look at top when SSHed into the box, nothing looks out of the
ordinary. In fact, it seems that everything is still running normally.
AWN is still running, and comes and goes from the top screen, and
nothing is taking up a lot of CPU.

Interestingly, however, when I tried to unfreeze the system by
restarting X with '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' over SSH, the SSH session
froze. Last thing printed to the screen was * Stopping GNOME Display
Manager...

I cp'd a copy of the Xorg.0.log that was there when it froze to the
desktop, so I'll post that after rebooting.

[Bug 310345] [NEW] Desktop becomes unresposive when using intel driver

2008-12-21 Thread Daniel FitzGibbons
Public bug reported:

Using Jaunty, the desktop will randomly become completely unresponsive
on my Sony Vaio FW140E (uses an intel gm45 graphics card). There isn't
any one activity that seems to set this off, or any amount of time.
Once I was browsing the web after about an hour of uptime, and another
time I left the computer on overnight and woke up and it was
unresponsive.

When this happens, the mouse can move, but no keyboard inputs have any
effect and windows don't react to mouse clicks at all. I don't hear any
sounds like the fan or hard disk that would indicate that the CPU is
maxed out.

I had this same issue with Fedora 10 and Opensuse 11.1 (both of which
use the 2.5 version of the intel driver, like Jaunty). In Mandriva 2009
and Ubuntu 8.10 there doesn't seem to be an issue, so it might be an
upstream issue with the new driver?

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2008-10-29 Thread Daniel FitzGibbons
I also can confirm this bug, and same results, on the same laptop. No
distro seems to yet have a solution (fedora rawhide, suse factory,
mandriva cooker, etc.), and compiling from upstream hasn't helped
either.

Has anyone tried using a GEM enabled kernel to tap into the latest
capabilities of the driver? I haven't had the time to try it yet.
