[Bug 751175] Re: Time and Date Settings don't load

2011-06-28 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
This problem has come and gone with me, mostly come in the last month or
so.

I used the ps ax | grep indicator-datetime-preferences and then kill
the first job method (i.e. proposed by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
datetime/+bug/751175/comments/19). Obviously, this is not an optimum
approach to the problem!

I think it is a pretty high bug: changing date and time is a common user
action and the solution to this at the moment is not for the people for
whom "just works" is important. These kinds of issues have a major
effect on user opinions.

[Bug 584336] Re: gwibber-accounts displays facebook authorization repeatedly

2010-06-30 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
There is pretty clearly a serious issue with Facebook and Gwibber and
with Gwibber not updating. Just Google "Gwibber Ubuntu" and you'll see
it everywhere.

This is far from "low priority." It basically makes the thing useless.

In a fresh install of Lucid, I cannot add Facebook to my broadcast
accounts. It asks for authorisation and once it has received it (I get
an email from facebook letting me know it accessed facebook), it tells
me "Success" and then does nothing. There is no facebook among my
accounts after I close the add service window.

Inside the main Gwibber (I get no notices or refreshes from the menu bar
version), it is 18 hours or more late and no amount of refreshing helps.

[Bug 572777] Re: NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant timing out when connecting wireless

2010-05-13 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
I have had the same issue since yesterday noon (MDT) on an Acer One. The
wireless card is 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications
Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

I can access my university's unsecured network, but was thrown out
suddenly from our WEP network and now can't connect either to the WEP
protected or the WPA/WPA2 protected one. We've checked that I still have
access rights and nothing has changed at the sys admin's end. With
either password protected network I am repeatedly asked for my key or
uname and passwrd, but then nothing happens.

I've gone through my apt log, and I don't see any updates or anything
from yesterday at all, so I don't know what could have changed.

[Bug 248860] Re: custom_cmd persistence doesn't seem to work.

2008-07-15 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Some additional testing. The logout dialogs are also ignoring values in
gdm.conf (and gdm.conf-custom) daemon/AllowLogoutActions. I just edited
gdm.conf-custom to add the following overrides:

[daemon]
SystemCommandsInMenu=HALT;REBOOT
AllowLogoutActions=CUSTOM_CMD;HALT;REBOOT

These should override the relevant commands in gdm.conf:
SystemCommandsInMenu=HALT;REBOOT;HIBERNATE;SUSPEND;CUSTOM_CMD
# Specify which actions are supported by QUERY_LOGOUT_ACTION, SET_LOGOUT_ACTION
# and SET_SAFE_LOGOUT_ACTION. Valid values are HALT, REBOOT, HIBERNATE, SUSPEN$
# CUSTOM_CMD separated by semicolons.
AllowLogoutActions=HALT;REBOOT;HIBERNATE;SUSPEND;CUSTOM_CMD

After reboot, the changes to SystemCommandsInMenu (i.e. the ones that
should up under Action in the greeter) work--as you might expect given
that both CUSTOM_CMD and changing the value of standard commands like
SUPEND woroked earlier.

The changes to the Logout dialogues are completely ignored.

Could Ubuntu/Debian set the logout dialogue somewhere else entirely?

[Bug 248860] [NEW] custom_cmd persistence doesn't seem to work.

2008-07-15 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

apt-cache policy gdm
gdm:
  Installed: 2.20.6-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.20.6-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.20.6-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.20.5-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

Persistence seems to be broken in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom (and of
course /etc/gdm/gdm.comf). When adding a custom command to gdm, for
example, the option customcommand/CustomCommandIsPersistentN=true (where
N is the number from 0-9 of the command) SHOULD allow the custom command
to appear in both the greeter and the various logout choices:
QUERY_LOGOUT_ACTION, SET_LOGOUT_ACTION and SET_SAFE_LOGOUT_ACTION:

from /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom.
# Custom command persistence option. Setting it to true will allow this
# command to appear outside the login manager, e.g. on the desktop through
# Log Out/Shut Down dialogs. The default value is false.

Setting this value to true has no effect on the logout/shut down dialogs
inside the Ubuntu session, however. CUSTOM_CMDs show up on the action
list in the greeter, but not on the logoutout shut down queries inside
the session desktop. (This persistence also seems to be broken for
established commands as well: to check I tried changing the command for
suspend inside gdm.conf: when I rebooted suspend did not have the new
command).

I suppose the short way of saying this is that changes that affect the
greeter menu are not showing up in the logoff dialogue boxes even if
they are labelled persistent.

[Bug 195296] Re: [gutsy] gdm (including gdmsetup) ignores or cannot access gdm.conf-custom

2008-07-15 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
I'm having what looks like the same problem noted at the top, though not
getting the error lists. This is in a Hardy machine. Changes made in
gmsetup do not look like they are "taking" when you click on apply
changes (in fact they seem to vanish immediately).

In fact, if you manually open /etc/gdm.conf-custom, you'll find that
they changes have been made. But the machine needs to be rebooted before
they will take effect. This suggests to me that the problem is that
gdmsetup is either not running something like gdmflexiserver
--command="UPDATE_CONFIG https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195296

[Bug 207446] Re: [ndiswrapper] [wg511] fails to associate

2008-06-26 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
I can confirm this with an IPN 2220 card (ndiswrapper, network manager).
The problem is not with ndiswrapper, or network manager, as far as I can
tell, as I am using the hardy versions with a gutsy setup and they work
fine.

My history with the problem:
1) upgraded from gutsy to hardy; suddenly no longer to connect to previously
working access point on wpa network.
2) clean install of hardy: wpa unable to connect
3) clean install of gutsy with ndiswrapper and network manager added from the
hardy disk: access works fine. All updates have been applied to gutsy
installation as well.

[Bug 229382] Re: [hardy] Can't connect to WPA wireless connection using nm-applet

2008-06-22 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
This is a real issue. Which I have confirmed through repeated reinstalls
and upgrades from gutsy to various versions of Hardy and derivatives
(e.g. Xubuntu, LinuxMint, Ubuntu). It may be related to the issue of the
order of modules in the Kernel discussed in the forms surrounding the
Broadcom wlan cards, but it is wider-spread. I'm using a INPROCOMM IPN
2220 card and can replicate the problem every time.

Basically the problem is this: when attempting to log onto a WPA
protected network in 8.04 and derivatives (either from network manager
or the commandline) using ndiswrapper and wpasupplicant, the connection
fails. Initial connection is made, but DHCP doesn't seem to provide any
reply. In 7.10 with the same versions of ndiswrapper, wpasupplicant, and
networkmanager (i.e. loaded from the 8.04 disk in a clean install), the
connection proceeds flawlessly.

Since I'm able to replicate the conditions for both working and non-
working connections everytime, let me know what you need. I have the
impression that this is a major issue that is not showing up in the bug
reports as often as you might expect because there is a fix of sorts for
Broadcom users and because the problem lies somewhere that is not
obvious--i.e. clearly outside of NM, ndiswrapper, and wpasupplicant.

Since sending this, the tech person at our university I asked to fixed

[Bug 158407] Ubiquity causes MBR problems; fails to install grub

2007-10-29 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When Installing 7.10 from the desktop iso on a clean (new) XP machine, I
end up consistently with a grub error 17. /boot/grub seems not to be
present. I have tried this and had the error occur on both a single new
320GB seagate ATI drive and a 20GB master/320GB slave set up. Both times
the Windows XP was a new install. The computer is an older dell
optiplex.

I have tried various options for recovering from the error or installing
without tripping it. To recover I have run fdisk -lu to check the
partition numbers, and the various bits of advice in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3658886, but it doesn't seem
relevant. I have not tried installing from the alternate disk or tried
installing 7.04 (which has always worked for me). I also tried most
options on the grub superdisk.

The second time I tried installing 7.10, fdisk showed that the linux
partition had been set to boot (rather than the ntfs). I changed that
using gparted but to no avail.

I am not sure if the problem is that the installer is wrecking the XP
MBR, or if it is that it is not installing grub. I have somebody looking
at the windows MBR to see if that's wrecked. I know it is not installing
grub.

This seems to me to be a pretty significant error. I know my research

Yes and no. Automatix adds a fair bit, for example, without real user
intervention. Increasingly we are seeing scripts--designed to make
Ubuntu easier for non-specialists to use--that automatically modify
configuration files like sources.list.

In my view this is to be applauded--the most important part of "Just
Works" is that users shouldn't have to involve themselves with
configuration files to do basic and predictable tasks.

This is a pan-Ubuntu approach--see the various discussions we've been
having about the xorg configuration file and wide-screen monitors. It is
not hard to produce a mod line and insert it in xorg.conf--but you
shouldn't have to.

It is especially important that this be done at upgrade and
installation, IMO. This is the whole point behind the automatic notice
in the upgrade manager that a new distribution is available. It is also
not hard to type apt-get dist-upgrade at a console: but we use update
manager because it is more user oriented and the task is extremely
predictable.

I don't mean this specific URL, I mean the necessity of stripping your
sources.list to the bare minimum in order to do a dist. upgrade. Using a
big button on upgrade manager for "dist. upgrade" implies that you can
press it and get your dist. upgraded. In fact, if what I'm understanding
here is correct, you actually need to reduce your sources.list to an
official minimum.

This is not a major problem for anybody with experience (though the need
to do so is not prominently documented at the same place you click on
the button or in the readme that pops up), but it is a command-line user
task that is unnecessary and might scare off novice users.

My proposal for the short term is that a prominent note be added to the
pop up window that appears after you select dist. upgrade from the
upgrade manager asking you to comment out anything but the official
repositories.

For the longer term, why not build and use a temporary sources.list for
the upgrade? This would make the whole process invisible to the user and
is well worth doing.

Should this not be added to the documentation or automated? It seems to

Re: [Bug 49205] Re: New kernel wipes out eth0 after change from Breezy to Dapper

2006-11-06 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
I don't think it is. The change in kernel fixed it. Unfortunately it was
exactly and only the kernel that shipped with the dapper disk. Given how
fast the next version came out, I think they must have caught it too. I
had no problem before the kernel that came with dapper, and no problem
after the next kernel was released.

[Bug 51921] dapper-server install hangs at "running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)"

2006-07-04 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Public bug reported:

This has happened both from a clean install from the server disk and
from a dist-upgrade from a clean install of breezy. Others have reported
similar problems
(http://www.google.ca/search?q=ubuntu+dapper+server+%22running+local+boot+scripts%22&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox&rls=org.mozilla
:en-US:unofficial)

Basically, what happens is that the reboot stalls after "starting
periodic command handler" or "Running local boot scripts". Some people
report that it may start up again after about 30 minutes. I've been
waiting 20 with no result.

In my case, the error is appearing on a Dell Optiplex G240 both with a
fresh install from the dapper server disk and with a dist-upgrade
(having replaced "breezy" with "dapper" in sources.list) from a fresh
breezy reinstall.

[Bug 50360] Manual partitioner reports error without offering solution

2006-06-19 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When you are manually partitioning a HD and have installed four primary
partitions, right clicking on the free space causes an error, because
ubiquity is trying to install a fifth partition. A warning window comes
up telling you that you can only install four partitions.

What is going on, I think, is that right clicking and choosing "new"
invokes the partitioner with "primary" (the default) already chosen.
What should happen is that after the third primary partition, Ubuiquity
should make extended the default.

At any rate, the partitioner in Breezy handled this better: when you
used up your primary partitions, it automatically started logical ones.

[Bug 50355] Dapper installer ships with buggy linux

2006-06-19 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Public bug reported:

The linux kernel originally included in the LTS release messes up
internet on some Dell computers at the very least. When you install from
the dapper disk, you get this kernel.

The problem is fixed with the previous or next kernel, but since your
internet is down, you can't get it. If you have a clean install, that
seems to be it for your machine.

The only solution is to install Breezy, and then update using Synaptic.

This is a really critical error as it makes new install Dells useless.
We need to include the newer kernel on the install ISO
