Public bug reported: Was using both a cifs share and a nfs share at the moment of the crash, both network filesystems get mounted by automount, seems that the bug happened at the cifs automatic umount. I think it is something in the packaging. 384.90 was working fine until last update, and now it is no longer working. Sorry, I didn't had time to do a fresh install to test, but with my
current computer, the modem still not working without the proper udev
rules - the modem still not recognized as a modem device, just a USB disk.
I think the package reponsable for this detection is modemmanager, but
I'm not sure. The udev rule /lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-ericsson-mbm.rules
do this when the modem is connected: ENV{ID_MM_ERICSSON_MBM}=1 maybe
some other package must read this, but i don't really know. I did a env
| grep ID_MM_ERICSSON_MBM, but this returns nothing (I don't know much
about udev, so maybe this is the correct behavior and this ENV is not
system env).
About the selection of band (2G, 3G or mixed mode), I read that the
developers of Network Manager are working on this.

I think this it not a bug itself. When the Sony Ericsson MD300 is
inserted, its not recognized as a 3g modem, just as a block devide. To
make it to work i need to create the file
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-md300modem.rules with the contents:
ACTION!=add, GOTO=3G_End
BUS==usb, SYSFS{idProduct}==d0cf, SYSFS{idVendor}==0fce,
PROGRAM=/bin/sh -c 'echo 3 /sys/%p/device/bConfigurationValue'
LABEL=3G_End
Then, i just need to restart udev and the modem are correctly recognized.
(i take this trick from the site http://laudecioliveira.org/blog/?p=70).
I don't know if i need to open a new bug, but the network manager only
activate this modem in the 'auto' mode, where it choice the band (2G or
3G) automatically, and i can't set it to work only with 3G (i can do
this sending the command AT+CFUN=6 to the modem, but NM cannot permit to
the user change the modem init strings.
System: i only tested this with ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10 (i386 and amd64).

I think this it not a bug itself. When the Sony Ericsson MD300 is
inserted, its not recognized as a 3g modem, just as a block devide. To
make it to work i need to create the file
/etc/udev/rules.d/50-md300modem.rules with the contents:
ACTION!=add, GOTO=3G_End
BUS==usb, SYSFS{idProduct}==d0cf, SYSFS{idVendor}==0fce,
PROGRAM=/bin/sh -c 'echo 3 /sys/%p/device/bConfigurationValue'
LABEL=3G_End
Then, i just need to restart udev and the modem are correctly recognized.
(i take this trick from the site http://laudecioliveira.org/blog/?p=70).
I don't know if i need to open a new bug, but the network manager only
activate this modem in the 'auto' mode, where it choice the band (2G or
3G) automatically, and i can't set it to work only with 3G (i can do
this sending the command AT+CFUN=6 to the modem, but NM cannot permit to
the user change the modem init strings.
System: i only tested this with ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10 (i386 and amd64).

This is really a gksu or sudo bug. My system is up to date. If i put in a terminal gksu any_comand_here, nothing happens. If i try the su mode (with -w), they asks for the password of root.
