[Bug 1155575] Re: Rhythmbox not reading 'year' tag

2013-11-20 Thread Danillo
I confirm it working on Rhythmbox 3.0 on Ubuntu 13.10. I guess for now
we can install the newer version from the fossfreedom PPA:
http://xpressubuntu.wordpress.com/2013/10/06/how-to-install-
rhythmbox-3-0-in-saucy/

Plugins for the newer version can be installed from another PPA:

I got the same problem but the workaround I'm using is go to input
settings, add another random keyboard layout and remove it right away.
I'll try the other one.

[Bug 1057186] Re: Modem functionality of the Huawei E173 and E3131 doesn't work

2013-10-26 Thread Danillo
Thank you Marius for updating you PPA. It's a pity the packages are
failing to build. I tried building 0.6.2.0 from source, but I've found
some errors, so I decided to workaround this bug by downgrading
modemmanager. I've found a very simple way for that:

1- Download Precise's modemmanager 0.5.2.0: wget
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/98148167/modemmanager_0.5.2.0-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
2- Remove current modemmanager: sudo apt-get remove modemmanager
3- Install the downloaded package: sudo dpkg -i
modemmanager_0.5.2.0-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

[Bug 1054282] Re: No obvious way to restrict shopping suggestions from displaying adult products

2012-09-24 Thread Danillo
You know what happens when you type penis into Google? Guess what, you get
to see lots and lots of penises. (even with strict
safe search).

Not if you type it in Google Scholar. Try it:
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=penis

There are some professionals like doctors, psychologists, social
scientists, biologists and others whose work and research involve files
with words like e.g. penis. So they shouldn't use super for quickly
finding papers on their computer if they don't wanna see lots and lots
of penises in Ubuntu's dash? And what about fuzzy matching? And what if
someones mistypes a word? It's not as simple as one might think.

[Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens

2012-09-23 Thread Danillo
I know it's very easy to just sudo apt-get purge unity-lens-shopping -
and we all should really appreciate that Canonical made it that easy to
opt out of this new feature-, but I also believe it should be opt-in and
have its own separate lens, both for avoiding adware accusations as for
cluttering the home lens.

I think it should be made obligatory that all features like this one
expose options in the Privacy Manager. Ubuntu was praised by the EFF for
advancing its privacy management, so let's handle this move properly
instead of rushing it and tainting its reputation.

(And hey, if you wanna be heard, just stop the ever-annoying I'm moving
to/recomending whatever distro threats. Things like that add nothing to
the arguments in question and make you look like spoiled adolescents.
There are good points in this thread, please don't let them become lost
amidst flame baits. When people say they rather install an almost
completely different OS than to just remove a package there's no room
left for discussing rationally.)

[Bug 1054282] Re: No obvious way to restrict shopping suggestions from displaying adult products

2012-09-23 Thread Danillo
There are lots of explicit band names like Karma Sutra, Naked Aggresion,
Rudimentary Peni, Penis Flytrap, Sex Gang Children, Sex Pistols, and The
Vibrators that could result in pornographic results on the dash.
Potentially, fuzzy matching could also cause this for less explicit
artistic names too, like mistaking Dido for dildo. I'd find it really
offensive having pornographic results on the home dash while searching
for a specific band or song, and I'm sure lots of other people would
find the same.

[Bug 1039167] Re: Apps won't Lock to last Launcher position

Yes, this is very annoying! The last locked launcher will frequently
move even two or three spaces further down instead of being locked in
place. I can never rely on a super+number shortcut for my last locked
application, and this always make me go to the wrong application window
or waste some time looking where its icon is.

in the concertina. If this behavior is implemented, only the icons below
it should collapse.

[Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-03 Thread Danillo
I noticed there's still a minor visual glitch left with the compiz-
proposed ppa. When switching a window between workspaces with
ctrl+shift+arrow, it doesn't stay in place, it trembles a little bit
and goes back to its original position, whether it is maximized or not.
Is anyone else seeing this? I'm have an Intel GM965.

[Bug 933776] Re: [regression] Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from curent workspace.

2012-05-13 Thread Danillo
I also like Unity a lot. As a matter of fact, if it wasn't for Unity I
would still be running 9.10 because not even the LTS was reason enough
for me to upgrade before Unity. I think giving us an option to Gnome
Shell and building it on top of Compiz was a wonderful decision.

These temporary problems are a necessary evil for us to move forward and
spread free software everywhere. They will be fixed, we just need to be
patient.

The cube problem is a duplicate of bug #862430 and it will be fixed
soon.

Now let's stay on topic please.

[Bug 933776] Re: Unity overrides compiz scale plugin behavior settings

2012-04-15 Thread Danillo
This is not a wanted behavior, and it could not be because of the
reasons in comment #6. If you look at http://design.canonical.com/the-
toolkit/unity-task-switching/ you'll confirm it, and if you check the
activity above, you'll see that the developers have confirmed this bug.
It just hasn't been fixed yet because its importance was set to low, as
there are even more urgent and crucial bugs at the moment. As soon as
they fix them, they'll turn to this one. We just have to be patient.

Remember what they did with the Alt-Tab: we now have a key combo for
changing windows on the current workspace only, and another one for
changing windows on all workspaces (Ctrl+Alt+Tab). I've always changed
Ctrl+Shift+Up for Super+E to have a key to scale windows from the
current workspace only and another for all windows, and it works great.
I'm guessing we'll have something like that.

Hey, Ego, since the decision to remove dodge from default Unity was made
and apparently will not be reversed, what about integrating your script
into 3rd-party applications like Ubuntu Tweak or Unsettings? They have
some extra options that not even CCSM have (like natural scrolling and
removal of global menus and overlay scrollbars), so they look like the
perfect place for non-default functionality like this one.

[Bug 931245] Re: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars

2012-03-24 Thread Danillo
Yeah, I think that's the best approach. And it doesn't necessarily need
to look like a button, it could look like an indicator. This way we
would have even more consistency with the panel. All it would need is to
separate the application name from the window title.

Here goes the same mockup but with LIM as an indicator instead of a
button.

2012-03-23 Thread Danillo
I'm having this with Firefox right now. I was trying to find out if an

windows and I never have arrows indicating open instances of it. I
reenabled every add-on I have, but the launcher and the alt-tab still
don't track Firefox.

[Bug 931245] Re: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars

2012-03-22 Thread Danillo
Hey, I've been testing LIM with the Unity Team ppa, and I'm sorry, I
know it's too early to tell how LIM is going to evolve, but I got a
suggestion.

In the design list John Lea said that, in order to avoid creating
problems with moving windows by dragging their titles, LIM would only
show when the left mouse button is released, but that solution makes
LIM's behavior inconsistent with the behavior of the rest of panel items
and of the global menu. In addition, some people were complaining that
LIM could take an extra click (which is a false impression, but
anyway...). And I was also wondering if the only change to the
decorations will be the addition of the menu icon to the left of the
window title, which sounds too subtle, it could be not very clear to
newbies.

I created a mockup suggesting an app button. It's in attached. With an
app button we could access a menu item with a single left click -
holding the left mouse button, moving it to the menu item we want and
releasing the button. This would make LIM's behavior more consistent
with the rest of Unity itens, allow accessing menu itens with a single
click, increase discoverability, and zero out any chance of interfering
with the movement of windows.

[Bug 742475] Re: Firefox does not use Ubuntu Notifications

2012-03-21 Thread Danillo
Jo-Erlend has a very good point. Unity's latest improvements made
interactive notifications redundant.

Well, since in http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/xul-ext-notify we have
the package's source code, I guess all we need is to find someone who
can update it. Any volunteers? =)

By the way, yesterday I got a Notify-OSD notification instead of the
default Firefox one. I thought it was integrated with the update to
Firefox 11, but today I'm getting the regular notifications again. I
have absolutely no clue what happened.

[Bug 829706] Re: It's difficult to select a document file from a list of document files in unity.

2012-03-17 Thread Danillo
Hey, Alan Bell created a script to add a list of running windows to the
application's launcher quicklist and set up a ppa:
http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2012/03/16/unity-window-quicklists/

If his script was implemented in Unity, we could get straight to the
window we want just by holding and releasing one right-click.

[Bug 937740] Re: Ubuntu 12.04, Expo desktop zoom out causes ugly screen flickering when dragging windows to other desktops

2012-03-10 Thread Danillo
The desktop cube had this same regression the last cycle and the fix
seems to be still being tested. It's bug #876198. Could this one be
related? If it is, an user found a workaround hack for it. It's in
comments #102 and #106 of that bug report.

Could someone see if the hack fixes this bug too? (I can't test it
because I don't have another machine other than my work laptop right
now.)

[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s

2012-03-07 Thread Danillo
I'm using Oneiric with Compiz 0.9.6 in the same computer I was having
this issue before. Yesterday I installed World of Goo, Penumbra, and
Gish and was able to play all of them in fullscreen. I tried installing
them also on a Precise live USB, but as I couldn't get them to run (due
to some other issue) I wasn't able to see if it's working in Compiz
0.9.7. Nevertheless, it seems like the problem is gone.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2012-01-09 Thread Danillo
I'm sorry, but talking about sheer, childish stubborness after a
member of the design team took the trouble of answering our questions
and giving us the reasons for the current state of the launcher is IMO
dishonest and just plain offensive and disrespectful both to the design
team as to the users who gave resonable arguments in this report for a
movable launcher. We should strive for a harmonic relationship between
all the members of this community and refrain from making such
accusations. This is not helping this discussion in any way.

[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives

2012-01-02 Thread Danillo
Hadmut, Unity will become more customizable as soon as the developers
make it more stable. That's just not possible right now with the huge
amount of work to be done. But from what you are saying, clearly what
you want is Xubuntu. It's a great spin-off, fully supported by
Canonical. Try it out. But please let's stay focused on the issue of
this bug.

Maybe when an application is maximized, the launcher could show a small
tab in the middle of the left side of the screen, and this would be the
only area where we can reveal it. In attached there's a (very
amateurish) mock-up.

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher

2012-01-02 Thread Danillo
I want to thank you John Lea for your attention and your patience in
answering questions. It's really appreciated!

People complain about the design team, but more often than not users act
almost like bosses to them. Do you think that Unity bashing will make
anyone more likely to listen to you if you say you have been using
Ubuntu ever since 6.06?

If you want to prove your point, the best way to do this is to do
usability tests, and not with the Gnome-2 power users, but with the
simple people that Ubuntu is aiming for. Get two Ubuntu computers, one
with the default left-launcher and another with the bottom-launcher from
Unity plugin rotated, and, with a similar approach to the design team,
invite users to use them and share their impressions. This way, you will
have factual data to share, collected in a more scientific manner, and
you will be able to make arguments based on something other than your
own personal opinion and workflow.

I'm someone who likes the launcher on the left but understands that lots
of people don't like it, so I voted for this bug. I know it's
frustrating that things now are not the way everyone wants, but John's
answers are very reasonable. The previous reason for the lack of
movement of the launcher was the BFB, but now that reason is gone, there
is a lack of humanpower. That's the bottom line, and it's something
totally understandable. I'm sure this issue will become a priority when
Unity becomes more stable (after 12.04) and the primary focus shifts to
the phone and tablet interfaces, as the transition between the landscape
and portrait orientations of the devices will become a challenge for the
launcher.

Until then, there's a Compiz plugin that anyone can install, and it
should really get more technical support from the community, plus an
effort to help Pavel Golikov to test and to iron out the plugin would
make its possibility of a future acceptance into the Unity main code
smoother. Focus should be turned to this.

As to left-handed people, this is an important usability issue, and
there already exists a (accidental) work in progress for fixing that:
bug #654988 is about mirroring the interface. The fix for Unity 2D was
released, and a fix for Unity 3D will be released when it is possible.
I'm sure this is not useful for RTL locales only, but would be welcomed
by the left-handed people who commented on this bug report too, so it
would be nice to vote for and comment on that bug and to ask to be able
to use this also in LTR locales.a

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2012-01-02 Thread Danillo
I'm just an Ubuntu user (been one for 3 and a half years) who believes
in the Debian's arrow and its philosophy and wants to see free
software everywhere, and I would like to add that contrarily to what
some people have been saying I am one of those who think that keeping
Compiz and going for Unity are the best things that have ever happened
to Ubuntu. Unity is the sole reason I upgraded from 9.10 to 11.04 and
keep upgrading, and it made my brother get interested in Ubuntu too.
It's not just the eye candy, they made me much more productive. I'm
really glad we didn't get stuck with Gnome Shell like the other distros
did. I love the direction Ubuntu's heading and I'm looking forward to
Precise.

I would like to comment on this subject because I find it sad that
Allison's post #81 is being ignored. Allison has a very important point
for this discussion: it's both sides of the community who need to engage
in a more healthy way, and we already got people from both sides trying
to do that.

It's easy to say that the developers should get a tougher skin, but
that's not something easy (or desirable) to do. Some unsatisfied users
are not trying to get a tougher skin in face of what they perceive as
harsh answers from the design team, so why should the developers do
that? That's not a realistic request. We need to ask for politeness, not
for tougher skins. When we are aggressive to someone, we should expect
at least the same level of aggressiveness. We're all humans who have
trouble keeping a cool head even when trying really hard to. It's naive
to expect otherwise.

We should recognize that things are getting better. The UDS decision of
focusing on power users and allowing more customizability is a huge step
forward to settle this matter. There's increased responsiveness of the
design team in some bugs, and even in this bug report we can see
progress in the answers. I really don't like the facts that one single
person can override at will decisions made by the teams if they don't
fit their personal view and that the community isn't included in the
making of these decisions, but post #110 really makes sense. Even if
they wanted to, they couldn't do everything, specially things outside
the blueprints. Sebastian's statistics do show that they do a lot for
us. The power user community needs to be more comprehensive about the
limitations of the design team and to start looking for answers to their
wontfix problems on their own because it's not even humanely viable
for the teams to do all that extra work. We can't demand that the Unity
developers go out of their way to satisfy our requests, which may be a
priority to us but not to other people. Maybe the community could go
crowdfunding in order to raise those several thousand dollars for
someone who has the hability to fix those bugs in Unity that affect a
great deal of users but Canonical can't/won't/don't want to address at
the moment?

On the other hand, there really is a great deal of users who are not
feeling included in Unity development because decisions are made and
reverted without their input and because their suggestions do not get a
proper answer, and this must be recognized and engaged. It's the lack of
communication that causes bugs like this. We know it's hard to give on
every bug answers like John Lea's, but this is something I think that
Canonical should do at least in those polemical bugs with a very high
number of affects me too. When a developer has already communicated a
position in a bug report but the report keeps growing, an update post
explaining more throughly what is the position of the design team, on
what it was based, and how they would react to a community patch is too
important to ignore. If there still is activity in a bug and there's
even people forking Unity to fix it, then the bug's not just someone's
pet peeve, it's a real problem for a lot of users. Otherwise, the
affects me too is just pointless.

For someone experienced it may seem trivial but it's not so easy for a
user to report bugs, specially for those of us who don't have english as
mother language. We have to study the problem, reproduce it, find
patterns, investigate the cause, gather info, search among thousands of
bug reports if it has not been reported already, put the ideas together,
and fill in the forms. I love when I read Thank you for taking your
time to report this bug and make Ubuntu better because it makes me feel
that this work is appreciated. Sometimes a short explanation and a link
is all that is necessary to make us understand the reasoning behind
something. I know time is short, but if a proper answer isn't going to
be given, why bother trying to answer at all?

One thing that made Ubuntu feel more human to me was videos like Amber
Graner's interviews of the developers in the UDS and the Ubuntu team in
the Nokia Lumia event. It's really nice to see and hear the people
behind Ubuntu, not just to read them. And lots of you guys and girls are
really terrific

2011-12-29 Thread Danillo
I feel that Unity 2D's launcher gives me less false positives, but it
could just be a false impression since I don't know if its behavior
really is different from Unity 3D's. If it is, starting by making 3D's
behavior more like 2D's would be great.

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2011-12-29 Thread Danillo
@marcobiscaro2112: I noticed that the Ubuntu Unity plugin rotated is
basically a fork, right? Well, I agree that's not something that we
should strive for, and I was thinking more about the possibility of
releasing a Compiz plugin that didn't need forking Unity. Is that
possible?

@everyone: Something a little similar to what Marco proposed in #58
could be implemented basically with the current Unity structure at least
for some cases. Go to CompizConfig Settings Manager Window Management
Scale plugin Shortcuts and tick the click on the desktop to show
desktop option. Now when the scale plugin gets triggered after clicking
on the launcher, another click on the application icon will minimize the
windows.

However, there are two problems with this: this only happens when we
have multiple instances of an application, and it will maximize all
windows, not just the ones for that application. Nevertheless, if you're
minimizing to see the desktop, this could be useful. If you want to use
another application instead of seeing the desktop it would require
another click on the launcher, but there's a bug related to this:
clicking on the application icon on the launcher will maximize all
windows instead of the application you want. This is bug #871801 and it
already has a fix pending. It's far from ideal, but it's an option that
already exists.

Maybe it would be easier if changes could be made to the Scale plugin
instead of Unity, making it minimize only the scaled windows?

Oh, yeah, that fixed it! I was about to report that as a bug when I saw
this bug and read the comment #8, so I rushed in to comment. Sorry about
that, everyone!

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

I think the button could toggle menu visibility in maximized windows
too. This would increase discoverability of the global menu and allow to
directly control its persistence.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-12-09 Thread Danillo
Fenryxo's code for the appmenu is here:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~janousek.jiri/+junk/jjdesktop/files/head:/src/windecor/

According to him, it's written in Vala, but Unity Window Decorator is
written in C,. Therefore, we would need someone to port it.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-12-09 Thread Danillo
Apple sells iMacs with screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1440, and the
Thunderbolt display at 2560x1440. It is not the case that a global menu bar is
not ergonomic on large screens.
So global menus are ergonomical because Apple thinks so? Because Apple does
things this way it doesn't mean that there isn't a problem with it.

I would love an Unity AppMenu (let's hope for a Compiz plugin!), but
Manny's last proposition really is the most reasonable one for this
cycle, and it could increase menu discoverability and its persistence.

I think this discussion gave us good solutions for two major problems with the
global menu:
1- An option to turn global menus on/off for non-maximized windows/always off;
2- A fourth window button to turn menu persistence on/off, which could work
both for maximized and non-maximized windows.

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-12-06 Thread Danillo
I loved the suggestion of an Oxygen-style app button menu! Fenryxo's
mock-ups are simple but wonderful. This would make Ubuntu's global/app-
menu centuries ahead of OS X's global menu.

I think this would solve almost every single issue users has with the
current global menu while retaining all of it's advantages, plus having
an increased discoverability (since it would not exactly be hidden, it
would be indicated by a window button). It could also have the option of
being customized for showing on hover or upon clicking according to
need.

By the way, there is another bug report filed to this bug. Check bug #
900418.

[Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons

2011-12-06 Thread Danillo
Well, maybe what manny is saying could be implemented by giving the dash
minimize button a real minimizing action that would be restored the next
time the dash was opened and the close button something like a reset
action. The current design, where the two buttons perform the same
action, is kind of pointless.
