[Bug 1093270] Re: Sync oss4 (universe) 4.2-build2007-2 from Debian unstable (main)

2013-01-05 Thread Dave Lentz
AFAICT, this is the extent of the Ubuntu-specific changes:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50923111/oss4_4.2-build2002-3_4.2-build2002-3ubuntu1.diff.gz

In other words, they contribute to bug 969733, are unneeded, and all of
that is fixed in the Debian package. If there are other Ubuntu-specific
changes, please point them out to me (I can't seem to find a specific
diff file of the Ubuntu changes).

[Bug 1096283] Re: Installing Nautilus in Xubuntu 12.10 pulls in Redundant Packages as Dependencies

2013-01-04 Thread Dave Lentz
Can you post the output of this command? (Make sure you press 'N' to cancel
installation if the packages are still unacceptable to you):
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends nautilus

Note that Synaptic has a setting to not pull 'Recommends' packages by
default (the equivalent of the --no-install-recommends argument passed
to apt in the command above). While I personally prefer modularity,
integrating apps (like brasero in nautilus) seems to be all the rage
among bigger desktops (KDE/Gnome) right now.

[Bug 1093013] Re: sensors-detect doesn't find fans on HP ProBook 6560b

2012-12-23 Thread Dave Lentz
sensors-detect is not going to find your fan, as it is controlled
through BIOS/ACPI and is not manually configurable by using PWM like a
fan attached to a desktop motherboard fan header.

The real issue here is that your system is running so hot (which causes
the fan to run full speed to prevent hardware damage). My educated guess
is that the opensource radeon driver is causing your GPU (and
subsequently, the CPU and other internals) to heat up. Try using the
proprietary AMD fglrx/Catalyst driver and see if the temps come down.

2012-12-04 Thread Dave Lentz
@Kim, one solution would be installing a newer kernel (precise has
backported 3.5.x quantal kernel in the repo), since ALSA userspace is
already version 1.0.25

Since you are using a HDA device, another solution would be using David
Henningsson's PPA: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

[Bug 1022128] Re: [2007CZ2, Analog Devices AD1981, Green Line Out, Left] No sound at all

2012-12-02 Thread Dave Lentz
Marking Incomplete since OP has modified alsa-base.conf file.
@Eugenio: please remove the 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' line from
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and restart your system. If you still do not
have sound, then attach the updated information with the following command:
apport-collect 1022128

If you get sound back or are no longer experiencing the issue, then no response
is necessary, and this bug report will automatically expire.
Thanks.

[Bug 1082403] Re: please update to the latest stable version !

2012-11-24 Thread Dave Lentz
Martin, it will probably not be updated in precise/quantal repos unless
it has a critical flaw. The procedure for getting a pacakge updated in
an already released version of Ubuntu is here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

You would be far better off using a ppa or building your own package.

The URL's are for a 3rd-party PPA, so I wouldn't consider this a bug
with Ubuntu. The only packages the ppa contains are google-docs-fs and
python-gdata. The PPA has not been updated with versions for quantal, so
you should remove it from your sources.

[Bug 1033222] Re: check alternate X.org ABI dependencies

2012-11-18 Thread Dave Lentz
@Adam Niedling: from another bug report, I can see that you have
Optimus/hybrid graphics, so the behavior you report is correct. You
should NOT see nvidia drivers offered on your system. Installing nvidia
drivers directly would break at least the 3D (and maybe black screen X).
If you want to install nvidia drivers, you should do it through
Bumblebee: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

[Bug 675062] Re: Sysinfo for 1024mb ram shows 1001 mb ram

2012-11-14 Thread Dave Lentz
Does the behavior still occur on modern versions of Ubuntu and/or modern
kernels? It's much more likely your mobo reserving space for hardware
addressing or a kernel bug. If 'free' command reports the same, then
this bug should be assigned to a different package.

Marking Incomplete until someone confirms it's still an issue and
confirms what free command reports.

[Bug 1077804] Re: xorg

2012-11-11 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal

2012-11-05 Thread Dave Lentz
@Christopher Penalver: We've already gone over this. AMD's website often
leaves out pertinent information and is not an infallible source of
information. I've asked nicely before, but it appears I need to be more
forceful: STOP UNDOING MY COMMENTS/EDITS.

Thanks for your understanding...

** Description changed:

Following the AMD decision to change to a new driver support model for
Radeon™ HD 4000, HD 3000 and HD 2000 series cards as per
  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-
  radeon_linux.aspx , fglrx-installer installs non-working drivers.
+
+ NOTE: All AMD cards based on R(V)6x0 and R(V)7x0 chips are affected.
+ This includes some FirePro/FireGL/FireStream products as well as certain
+ RadeonHD5x00 mobility parts which are rebadged RadeonHD4x00 parts. If unsure,
please consult
+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD
legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base
  for use with these cards.

[Bug 1075081] Re: lib64ncurses5 cannot be installed on 12.04 64 bit

2012-11-05 Thread Dave Lentz
If you have a 64-bit system, then lib64ncurses5 is really just
libncurses5. The lib64ncurses5 package is for installing the 64-bit
version on a 32-bit system.

If you install the 32-bit version, the 32-bit program should run:
sudo apt-get install libncurses5:i386

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal

2012-11-05 Thread Dave Lentz
@Christopher Penalver: The Firestream 9250 is based on an RV770
(RadeonHD 4x00 series) chip, so it is included in this bug report. I've
tried to update the description to be more concise. If you're unsure,
consult
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

@Sean Fitzpatrick: I've marked your bug a duplicate of this one.

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal

2012-11-05 Thread Dave Lentz

If
+ unsure, please consult
+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

I suggest the addition of an fglrx-legacy package to install the AMD
legacy drivers for users with older cards or patch the current code base
  for use with these cards.

[Bug 1074803] Re: [, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2012-11-04 Thread Dave Lentz
Can you clarify which sound device you're trying to use (the topic says
HDMI, but then you mention headphone jack)?

If you're trying to use the HDMI audio, you should add "radeon.audio=1"
to your kernel boot line in /etc/default/grub (and then run sudo update-
grub).

[Bug 1074831] Re: Ubuntu bugs

2012-11-04 Thread Dave Lentz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description
didn't include enough information.
Thanks!
