[Bug 663229] Re: libsane does not detect Epson Stylus Office BX300F scanner

2016-09-06 Thread Dave Neary
Why was this bug report marked incomplete? Not only did I find and fully
describe the issue, I also included a workaround/fix in the bug report.
That seems pretty complete to me.

[Bug 884751]

2013-02-26 Thread Dave Neary
(In reply to comment #8)
> This is done by mmeeks work in current releases, for the rest: The
> description of this bug is still very vague => NEEDINFO

Hi Bjorn,

Can you explain to me how the report is vague, please? It is difficult
to change text to a custom colour which is not already in the LO
palette. Also background colours, and everywhere else that colours
appear in the user interface.

The natural place for a preference like this seems to me to be as a text
property in Format->Character (but you are the experts).

Thanks,
Dave.

[Bug 123500] Re: [upstream] Alt-key behavior doesn't match the rest of Ubuntu

2011-01-27 Thread Dave Neary
Perhaps I can re-explain the bug if you don't understand it, Chris? It's
quite simple. When you hit Alt and release it in OpenOffice.org or
LibreOffice, the File menu is activated (same as if you hit Alt-F). This
doesn't match every other GNOME or KDE application, and (importantly)
prevents StickyKeys from working properly.

StickyKeys allows people who can't chord on the keyboard (say, people
with babies on their knees, or with one arm, or with stiffness in their
fingers) to still be able to do things like Ctrl-C or Alt-Tab, because
they can hit the Alt key, and it's "sticky" until the next key is hit -
so they first hit Alt, then hit Tab, and they switch applications.

Vish: The bug has already been reported upstream in OOo:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=80604 Isn't that good
enough?

[Bug 123500] Re: [upstream] Alt-key behavior doesn't match the rest of Ubuntu

2011-01-27 Thread Dave Neary
And just to document the workaround for sticky keys here: hitting Alt
twice dismisses the file menu, and locks Alt for sticky keys (until Alt
is pressed a third time), so to switch windows you can do Alt-Alt-Tab-
Alt (in that order) to achieve the same effect as Alt-Tab.

[Bug 663229] [NEW] libsane does not detect Epson Stylus Office BX300F scanner

2010-10-19 Thread Dave Neary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsane

I have an Epson Stylus Office BX300F USB all-in-one printer/scanner/fax,
which is documented on the sane website as being supported by the epson2
driver.

However, the printer is not detected when plugged in and requires some
additional tweaking. Two small tweaks are sufficient:

1. Ensure that the device ID is being claimed by the correct driver: Edit
/etc/sane.d/epson2.conf and add the line:
usb 0x4b8 0x848
2. Ensure that the USB node's permissions are correctly set to allow
unprivileged users to scan: add the following lines to
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules:
#Epson Office BX300F
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0848", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

I don't know if this is the Right Way to do it, or if there's a better
way in the epson2 source code itself, but it'd be great if this
scanner/printer could be detected automatically in future releases.

[Bug 663226] [NEW] "Scanning" page doesn't explain how to manually add a scanner which is supported by a driver, but undetected

2010-10-19 Thread Dave Neary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The Scanning page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/printing/C/scanning.html has improved over
the past few releases, but still was not helpful for me in solving this
problem, which a quick search of the forums shows is quite common:

1. No scanner detected
2. Visit http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html and find that the
scanner is listed as well supported (in my case, the scanner is an Epson Stylus
Office BX300F printer/scanner/fax, supported by the epson2 driver:
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html#Z-EPSON):
Stylus Office BX300FUSB 0x04b8/0x0848 Goodall-in-one
3. Ensure that the device ID is being claimed by the correct driver: Edit
/etc/sane.d/epson2.conf and add the line:
usb 0x4b8 0x848
4. Ensure that the USB node's permissions are correctly set to allow
unprivileged users to scan: add the following lines to
/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules:
#Epson Office BX300F
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0848", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

These two steps seem to be required for a large number of printers - it
might be worth including them in the official docs.

Is this packaged in 9.10? I can't find it in Universe.

General Launchpad feedback: It'd be really nice to have the date opened,

distro when the bug was released. I had to look quite hard to see the
"Opened by..." grey text on top right, and there's no indication of when
this bug was fixed upstream in the summary.

There's a warning on that website - "please don't use SVN except for

Any ideas what change might have introduced this regression?

I also have this problem with a Logitech E 3500 - listed everywhere as

I do get video at a very small resolution, but trying to change the
resolution, or trying to access any resolution over 176x144, results in
the application blocking up. Even taking photos with Cheese, for
example, blocks the desktop and is quite unusable.

Tomasz, where can I get this 262 SVN revision you speak of? On the

that uvcvideo has been part of the kernel since 2.6.24.

[Bug 285407] [NEW] Pressing Alt with Sticky Keys active activates the File manu in OpenOffice

2008-10-18 Thread Dave Neary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When Sticky Keys is active, pressing Alt should not do anything, since
doing so affects Sticky Keys chording. In OpenOffice, pressing and
releasing Alt opens the File menu, and hitting Tab afterwards does not
change applications, because of the open menu.

To reproduce:
1. Open an OpenOffice.org presentation and another window (say Nautilus - Home
Folder)
2. Activate Sticky Keys in the keyboard accessibility preferences
3. Hit Alt, and release
4. Hit Tab, and release

Expected result: Active application switches to Nautilus window as if
user hit Alt-Tab

Actual result: Alt opens File menu of OpenOffice.org, and Tab doesn't
appear to do anything - the open menu steals focus.

Suggested fix: Hitting & releasing Alt should not open the menu on Linux
in GNOME.

Work-around: Hitting Alt a second time closes the menu, and Alt is
locked in Sticky keys, which allows you to cycle through apps with Tab,
and select a new application with Alt again.

[Bug 226594] Re: F5 takes you out of presentation mode if you're in it

2008-10-13 Thread Dave Neary
I have come across the same problem. Pressing F5 in OOo will put you in
presentation mode if you're not there, but pressing it again will not
take you out of it.

Since the Kensington pointers send F5 with the laser button, I end up
exiting presentation mode every time I want to use my laser pointer.
It'd be nice if (1) I could configure Evince to behave the same way as
OOo (and, presumably, MS Office) or (2) I could set another keycode to
go into presentation mode, and have the Kensington thing send that
instead. It seems like the second solution will be nigh on impossible.

The easiest thing to do to allow me to use the laser pointer on my
remote is to have F5 not exit presentation mode, as Pedro asked.

Martin: No I don't.

I did run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg which appears to have fixed this
and other issues I was having - the problem was that I had modified
xorg.conf in 6.06 or 6.10 (can't remember which I installed on this
laptop) to get around the video bios issue (the i915 hack), and the
modified xorg.conf had been carried silently forward through repeated
upgrades, even though it is now almost unnecessary. Once the video
driver was updated, the waking of the screen on suspend/resume (and all
of the xrandr stuff which had also stopped working in 7.10) works much
better.

You can close this one. But the upgrade issues represent real problems
for me.

[Bug 223848] Re: suspend/resume doesn't work on 8.04 on my Dell D420

2008-04-30 Thread Dave Neary
After a few tries, it appears that everything except suspending after
closing the lid is working. The on/off button and the Suspend from the
Quit menu entry appear to be working fine now.

I did a recursive reset of gpm config values, changing only three
settings to my preferred values (shutting the lid suspends when on AC
and on battery, and don't dim the screen when idle and on battery).

There must be something special happening (or not happening) when I
close the lid, compared to hitting the "Sleep" button. I have no idea
what that might be, or how to find out.

[Bug 223848] Re: suspend/resume doesn't work on 8.04 on my Dell D420

2008-04-30 Thread Dave Neary
I've been following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager

When I do the following things, the computer suspends & resumes as expected:
$ pm-suspend
$ dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.Hal"
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Suspend int32:0

Hitting the "Sleep" button

However, with the following, the backlight doesn't turn on after resume:

Closing the lid (configured in GPM to suspend)
Selecting "Quit" then "Suspend"

I don't know yet whether being on A/C or not makes a difference, or
whether hitting the on/off button & choosing "Suspend" works.

It seems like the problem is in GPM then.

I will attach the HAL events generated by these combinations (but, as
I'm sure you understand, deliberately doing something which you know
requires a reboot afterwards isn't in my list of priorities).

In the meantime, I'll attach the gconf values for GPM.

[Bug 223848] [NEW] suspend/resume doesn't work on 8.04 on my Dell D420

2008-04-28 Thread Dave Neary
Public bug reported:

On my Dell Latitude D420, Suspend/resume has worked perfectly from 6.10,
when I first installed the laptop. After upgrading to 7.04, I had some
issues, occasionally the laptop didn't suspend when I shut the lid, but
worked otherwise.

Since upgrading to 8.40 today, resume does not work at all. The system
wakes fine, but the screen stays off. I can reboot the machine by
navigating blind, entering my password to unlock the screen and shutting
down with a shortcut, but the screen does not wake at all.

I'd like a workaround for a start, if one exists. Someone on an IRC
channel talked about an FDI file? But really it'd be cool if I could
avoid regressions like this when upgrading - if something worked fine in
6.10 or 6.06, I don't understand how things could get worse through 7.10
and 8.04.

Along with the other bugs I've come across (help menu item doesn't work,
manual which is installed doesn't correspond to the interface, crash

[Bug 185462] Re: rhythmbox crashes: assertion failed

2008-03-19 Thread Dave Neary
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 105190 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105190

I found the original bug against the GStreamer Fluendo MP3 plug-in:
https://core.fluendo.com/gstreamer/trac/ticket/18

The solution is to remove that mp3 plug-in and use another, or upgrade
to the 0.10.7 version of the plug-in which I compiled for Gutsy and
attached to the referenced bug, or which is already included in Hardy.

[Bug 85828] Re: Rhythmbox crashes while playing MP3

2008-03-18 Thread Dave Neary
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 105190 ***

I compiled 0.10.7 of the MP3 plug-in for Gutsy, and it fixes the
problem. Attaching the .deb here (you'll have to trust me).

Here's a Gusty build of the mp3 plug-in from Hardy, which has the fix.

[Bug 96690] Re: rhythmbox crashes during playback of a mp3

2008-03-18 Thread Dave Neary
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 105190 ***

Any idea when 0.10.6 might be available in Gutsy?

What needs doing? Perhaps I can help...

[Bug 185462] Re: rhythmbox crashes: assertion failed

2008-03-18 Thread Dave Neary
Since this "crash" is an abort triggered by a failed assert, there is no
.crash generated. I have reproduced this with another song. Rhythmbox is
version 0.11.2. I don't know what version gstreamer is.

[Bug 137813] Re: dasher crashes when changing language to german

2008-03-07 Thread Dave Neary
I have the same bug with the French dictionary, and also bug #147083.

The combination of the two makes Dasher unusable, which is a shame,
because it's one of my favourite apps to show people.

It's a pity you've closed the pug, particularly given the number of
people reporting it. I just sent in a crash report which will hopefully
get dealt with.

[Bug 102408] Re: Evince opens ALSA library

2008-02-25 Thread Dave Neary
Also happens for me - both on Feisty and Gutsy. I usually open up pdfs
as attachments to mail messages in Thunderbird, these also sometimes
block the sound card.

[Bug 135562] Re: [gutsy] wengophone doesen't find the line

2007-10-12 Thread Dave Neary
There is a problem also building the WengoPhone with Boost 1.33 and GCC
4.1 - this combination causes lots of problems because of a Boost bug
(fixed in 1.34) in signals and slots.

If this combination is used for building the Gutsy version, there will
be lots of problems. Recommended set-up is GCC 4.0 and Boost 1.33.

[Bug 150854] ghelp:gnome-feedback doesn't work in Feisty

2007-10-09 Thread Dave Neary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

>From the Help pages of the "Network Settings" tool, I clicked on the
"GNOME feedback page" link in the "About this Document" page. The link's
URI is "ghelp:gnome-feedback". When I clicked on it, I get an error
dialog saying "Could not load document: The Uniform Resource Identifier
‘ghelp:gnome-feedback’ is invalid or does not point to an actual file."

I imagine this is a Yelp bug, but I really don't know.

[Bug 48867] Re: Ctrl-Shift-A does not select thread in Thunderbird on PPC

Very much so. It is also an issue on Dapper on x86. I have also confirmed with
some other people that this is an issue for them.

I'm using Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 now.
