[Bug 1498544] Re: Autologin not correctly enabled on 15.10 installations

2016-02-10 Thread David Biesack
I have a new 15.10 install (XUbuntu) and auto-login is not working for
me.

How can I check if I have this fix or not? I've done all system updates.

My /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.d/99_autologin.conf contain:

[greeter]
background=/etc/lightdm/wallpaper.png

[SeatDefaults]
user-session=xfce
autologin-user=myuserid
autologin-user-timeout=0
autologin-user-session=xfce

the wallpaper shows up so I know this conf is picked up, but autologin
does not work.

[Bug 899878] Re: Software center have hardcoded colors and shows white font on white bg

2015-06-11 Thread David Biesack
keying a fix for this general problem to a specific theme seems like the
wrong solution. The proper fix is to just honor the theme's
foreground/background colors, whether it is Adwaita or some thing
different.

It turns out that chrome fails to play the videos when they are served
from a SharePoint server (on our intranet). If I download the videos, I
can Ctrl-O Open them in Chrome and view them. Same if I move them to a
web server instead of a document folder in SharePoint. (Note that
Firefox can view the files in the SharePoint folder)

[Bug 991758] Re: Chromium web browser not showing mp4 videos

2015-04-29 Thread David Biesack
I'm running chromium-browser Version 41.0.2272.76 Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit)
and installed the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-
extra but I still can't play mp4/H.264 videos in the browser. I get a
black window with a play button, an empty progress bar, 0:00 and a
disabled audio button, but no video frame or playback.

The same video plays in Firefox.

VLC reports Stream 0 is Video, H264 - MPEG AVC (part 10) (avc1), decoded
format Planar 4:2:0 YUV; Stream 1 is audio MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a1)

I believe I've installed these correctly:

[Bug 1001035] Re: lightdm uses a hardcoded path to .xsession-errors, please make it configurable

2013-07-25 Thread David Biesack
I log onto a couple different machines using my common network account (i.e. a
shared HOME).
I really need a way to set my .xsession-errors file to be host specific, so
that my concurrent
sessions don't stomp on each other.

I recommend a boolean configuration option for lightdm.config to use a
$HOME/.xsession-errors.$HOST if it exists.

also, for those of us who have a shared network home directory, logging onto

Someone suggested we argue upstream so I've done that:

[Bug 1199049] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center displays light text on light background when using dark theme

2013-07-08 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

Migrating https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/913933
to current release.
I installed GnomishDark theme from
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/GnomishDark?content=147290
because I strongly prefer dark background.
I used gnome-tweak-tool to set my window and GTK theme to GnomishDark
Now Ubuntu Software Center appears with light text and a light foreground.

See the screenshot at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/software-center/+bug/913933/+attachment/2664871/+files/software-
center.png

It appears to take the text foreground color from the GTK theme, but
ignored the theme background color.

I first encountered and reported this in 11.04 but it is still in 13.04
(Xubuntu 13.04)
but the original bug was closed as Invalid as oneiric have reached EOL

[Bug 913933] Re: Ubuntu Software Center displays light text on light background when using dark theme

2013-07-01 Thread David Biesack
Is there a patch that I can apply to the UI to fix this? I've been able
to fix similar problems in meld and other tools, since many are
distributed as python or other scripting languages and are amenable to
source patching. software-center is a python script, and there is a lot
of python in /usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter but I don't where
to find these color or theme settings.

[Bug 1043118] Re: Shows Error while adding the file monitor.

2013-06-20 Thread David Biesack
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1003185 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1003185

Is there a workaround or preference which can disable this? I don't even
know what shutter is trying to do or what the file monitor is. I'm just
trying to capture a window

shutter --window --active --exit_after_capture --output=screenshot.png

and this dialog gets in the way. I have to dismiss it three times - very
annoying.

I'm running XUbuntu. The files are on my network mounted home directory.

(My workaround was to edit /sudo:r...@d77781.na.sas.com:/usr/bin/X11/shutter
and simply comment out all the calls to
fct_add_file_monitor($searchkey);
as I don't need this feature, whatever it is.

[Bug 1112568] Re: lynx -dump fails if filename is not *.html

2013-02-04 Thread David Biesack
Thanks for the tip, Thomas.

I still find the behavior confusing; i.e. that the name is important rather
than the content.
-dump dumps the formatted output of the default document
implies the document is HTML, does not mention other possible interpretations
or file formats,
and does not mention -force_html or the *.html convention or why there is
a need for -force_html.

If you do not wish to change the behavior, please consider updating the man page
to document the conventions/assumptions that lynx -dump makes.

[Bug 1112568] [NEW] lynx -dump fails if filename is not *.html

2013-02-01 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

lynx -dump url is supposed to strip out the HTML markup and format the text,
but it is not working; it is just echoing the output.

The input is simple HTML:

$ echo | curl.out EOF
html
bodypSome text/p/body
/html
EOF

but when I do

$ lynx -d curl.out

lynx just echos the HTML markup.

It works if I do:

  $ mv curl.out test.html
  $ lynx -d test.html

I.e. it appears the command requires the file name to end in .html

I can use

  $ lynx -dump -stdin  curl.out

as a workaround but the default should work.

(This is in the context of another script which fetches a web resource
via curl, then looks at the file content and does different thing based
on the contents; it is not always html, so that is why my file name is curl.out)

I'm on Ubuntu using:

$ lynx --version
Lynx Version 2.8.8dev.9 (12 Jun 2011)
libwww-FM 2.14, SSL-MM 1.4.1, GNUTLS 2.10.5, ncurses 5.9.20110404(wide)

[Bug 1034594] [NEW] zenity --question --timeout returns 5 when click yes

2012-08-08 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

The man page says:

For example, zenity --question will return either 0, 1 or 5, depending
on whether the user pressed OK, Cancel or timeout has been reached.
zenity --entry will output on standard output what the user typed into
the text entry field.

however, for the following

$ zenity --question --title=Title --text=Click yes --timeout=6
$ echo $?
5

one can see that zenity returns 5 instead of 0 if you click the Yes (OK)
button.

Without --timeout, zenity returns 0 when you click Yes.

The man page also is incorrect because the buttons are labeled No and Yes (in
that order, left to right),
not OK or Cancel.

Also, pressing ESC is typically equivalent to canceling a dialog, but in the
latter case, zenity returns 0
(as if I had selected Yes) instead of 0 (No/Cancel)

[Bug 1019364] [NEW] vinagre menu is hidden when host screen too smal

2012-06-29 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

I ran vinagre 3.4.2 on a laptop running 1280x1024 resolution to connect to a
desktop that was running on 1600x1200 dual monitors at
an effective resolution of 3200x1200. The vinagre menu that is supposed to
appear at the top center of the display appears to be centered on the virtual
desktop, and this is not visible on my physical display.

Actually, when I put the mouse at the very top right, I can see a thin white
line which is the left most pixels of the menu
and I can move over that and click to exit full screen.

This menu should be centered on the host display, not centered on the
remote (virtual) display, so that it is always visible.

Can someone describe what You need a policykit agent in your custom x session

documentation/guides on this.
'apt-get upgrade' from a console window works for me but update-manager still

Or better yet, is there a guide for missing components that one should
add in a bare xsession in order to get essential features working like
update-manager.

How does one get this fix? I get the same error message when I run
update-manager
and if I run

  sudo apt-get update

I get a list of packages downloaded but the update does not do
anything...

2012-02-13 Thread David Biesack
I guess my problem was not running Gnome3 - I was running a bare Xsession
session with openbox window manager.
I logged out, then logged in with a Gnome3 Unity session, and update-manager is
working OK for me
and downloading and applying changes. So for me the but is that update-manager
does not work in
an Xsession (when I ran it there, I never got a password prompt for the sudo
behavior).

(I still don't know why 'sudo apt-get update' failed as that should not
need any gui components)

[Bug 913933] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center displays light text on light background when using dark theme

2012-01-09 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

I am running gdm and my session is openbox-gnome (not Unity) on Ubuntu 11.10
I installed GnomishDark theme from
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/GnomishDark?content=147290
because I strongly prefer dark background.
I used gnome-tweak-tool to set my window and GTK theme to GnomishDark
Now Ubuntu Software Center appears with light text and a light foreground.

See the attached screenshot.

It appears to take the text foreground color from the GTK theme, but
ignored the theme background color.

[Bug 824514] Re: add feature: open gnome-rdp session via command line

OK. I have also jused rdesktop directly, since it's simpler and does
what I want (I don't need all the chrome that remmina provides)

[Bug 824514] [NEW] add feature: open gnome-rdp session via command line

2011-08-11 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

gnome-rdp should have a way to open a named connection via the command line
(like remmina -c file.remmina does, etc.).
This will allow adding shortcuts to command scripts, the Ubuntu start menu,
keyboard hot keys, etc.

I.e. if I have a rdp connection named MyLaptop then I should be able
to run

gnome-rdp --connect MyLaptop

or something similar.

[Bug 824587] [NEW] dialog with X errors pops up upon closing rdp session

2011-08-11 Thread David Biesack
Public bug reported:

I added a RDP connection to a Windows 7 laptop. Works great.
When I close the rdesktop gnome-rdp pops up a dialog with some X errors.

NOT IMPLEMENTED: System pointer message 0x7f00
X Error of failed request: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 23 (X_GetSelectionOwner)
Atom id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 4882
Current serial number in output stream: 4882

I don't care about these; they are meaningless to me,
and I have to take an extra step to dismiss the dialog.

[Bug 454215] Re: wmctrl doesn't adjust position of terminal windows in Hardy

2011-08-11 Thread David Biesack
@ralemi when I run your script in a terminal, it does not snap left or right.
instead, it resizes the window to take up
the entire monitor. I have dual monitors - it will resize to the size of a
maximized app on the left monitor (but
the icon is still that of a normal window - i.e. not maximized - as it it is
doing -b add,maximized_vert -b add,maximized_horz).

When I use snap.sh -r it maximizes the window (both horizontal and
vertical) on my right monitor.

[Bug 454215] Re: wmctrl doesn't adjust position of terminal windows in Hardy

2011-05-20 Thread David Biesack
In Ubuntu 10.10 wmctrl (1.07) moves terminal windows fine for me.

However, there are other windows that wmctrl can't move/resize as I
want. For example, I have my X display spread across dual 1600x1200
monitors for an effective 3200x1200 desktop

wmctrl -r 'Google Chrome' -e 0,1200,0,1000,1000

will move the window to 1600 instead of 1200, although the same geometry
works for a terminal window:

wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0,1200,0,1000,1000

My window manager is compiz but I have the same issue if I run metacity.
