[Bug 1748877] [NEW] DrKonqi fails to find Debug Symbols for (at least) Dolphin

2018-02-12 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from Kubuntu 17.04 to 17.10, and on the first boot
Dolphin crashed once for each window I had open in my session. (4 of
them) but I can't report the crashes properly because apparently there
are no debug symbols, and attempting to install them from DrKonqi gives
"Could not find debug symbol packages for this application."

I have no idea if the symbols actually don't exist (so this is a
packaging bug for Dolphin or more) or if the Find Symbols button is just
not working right. Note that it does not prompt me for my (sudo)
password.

[Bug 1744722] Re: Unknown bad source brings up during 'zesty' to 'artful' upgrade and It break the process

2018-02-12 Thread David Grossberg
I can confirm that

do-release-upgrade --proposed

successfully works around this issue on the user end. I am doing the
upgrade now. (I also added -f DistUpgradeViewGtk3 to it because I assume
the KDE UI still has broken autoscrolling in the terminal)

If anything can be done to get the fix to the main repo faster, I hope
this confirmation helps.

[Bug 1360753] [NEW] Kernel hibernate fails with "PM: Swap header not found!" when multiple swap spaces are enabled (even though the resume parameter is specific)

2014-08-23 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to set up working hibernation in Linux (Which I define
as hibernation that works no matter how full my RAM and swap are) and
have found it to be impossible with any of the hibernation systems. this
bug is about the failure using the "kernel" method, which is at least a
well defined failure.

My setup is the following:
Kubuntu 14.04 amd64 with 32GiB RAM, and a 32GiB swap file, with a 32GiB swap
partition that is enabled in a /etc/pm/sleep.d/ script and disabled on thaw.
The UUID of the partition is set in both /etc/default/grub
(GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT) and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume.

when /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module has SLEEP_MODULE=kernel then I can
actually successfully hibernate and resume IF I swapoff the swap file
first, which defeats the purpose. (SLEEP_MODULE=uswsusp is another story
for another bug, and TuxOnIce has been broken for a year, which I know
is not your concern)

If I leave the swap file active then when I attempt to hibernate, here
is the relevant portion of kern.log:

[Bug 144431] Re: gethostbyname() cant resolve names starting/ending with "-"

2013-09-06 Thread David Grossberg
I must have missed an e-mail with your previous post sorry. Anyway, what
are some of these reasons that there are any number of?

I think the practical solution to deciding which domains to drop and
which to support is unfortunately that we should support at minimum any
that Windows does. It is (for now at least) the de facto client
implementation: If Windows didn't allow accessing sites with the leading
or trailing hyphens, then tumblr etc. would not expose them.

As long as we are bickering about RFCs, I would like to propose that
this situation is best covered by the first half of RFC 1958 part 3.9:

3.9 Be strict when sending and tolerant when receiving.
Implementations must follow specifications precisely when sending to
the network, and tolerate faulty input from the network.

(it goes on to say "When in doubt, discard faulty input silently", but I
disagree with that for this instance obviously, I guess it comes down to
if "faulty" means would cause problems vs merely out of spec.)

It doesn't seem sensible to not support this if There Are Sites On The Internet

Please forget the precise wording of restrictions in technical specs and
remember that this is an actual user facing issue.

[Bug 1080530] Re: v86d prevents suspend from completing

2013-01-31 Thread David Grossberg
Some of you might consider a workaround that I am now using for other
reasons, which also bypasses this bug:

Use TuxOnIce (formerly Suspend2) instead.

It requires installing a kernel from the TuxOnIce PPA (and at least for
now that means an older kernel), or compiling one yourself with the
patch (which you could also do for this bug directly of course) but at
least you get the other benefits: I am using it to suspend to a non-swap
file so that hibernation will always work no matter how much stuff is
running and using RAM+swap.

2012-07-12 Thread David Grossberg
I took a guess what package this might be. Please change it to the
correct one if wrong.

More tumblr and presumably other sites are going to be affected by this over
time. Following an old RFC that is obviously not being enforced at the server
end is Clearly the wrong behavior for the client. The sentiment behind RFC
1958 section 3.9 applies very well here:
Be strict when sending and tolerant when receiving.

I'm seeing the same as comment 15 on a *Fresh* Kubuntu Oneiric install,
except that I have yet to find a way to remove the printer; I can see it
in the http://localhost:631 interface, I just can't do anything with it
at all. Next I'll see if I can find it mentioned in in /etc/

The printer I added is physically connected to another machine on my

is my laptop.

[Bug 600348] Re: update-manager always wants to uninstall xscreensaver

2011-09-11 Thread David Grossberg
I'd just like to add that that this also affects KDE users. In my
opinion Xscreensaver is simply better in every way than both the KDE and
Gnome implementations, so if this can be fixed it would make upgrades a
bet less of an annoyance.

I know this isn't useful info, but I tried using /etc/apt/preferences
pinning on the xscreensaver package (no version, just o=Ubuntu) to a
priority of 2001, and it didn't help any, the upgrade still wants to
remove it. Seems like that should make some difference to me, but I'm
not apt.

Yup, same issue, that environment variable works.
And my conditions are exactly as described in the gnome bug: KDE4, x86_64, and
moving Banshee.NotificationArea.* out of /usr/lib/banshee-1/Extensions is
another workaround I had found but forgotten to update the bug (sorry!)

Is a backport of that patch likely in the near future? (it's not as
important since there are now workarounds - that don't need root even,
but it would be nice)

2010-12-12 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

When I try to start Banshee the window appears for a split second and
then vanishes, leaving the following terminal output:

$ banshee --sync
[Info 21:03:40.546] Running Banshee 1.8.0: [Ubuntu 10.10 (linux-gnu, x86_64) @
2010-11-26 14:10:54 UTC]
[Info 21:03:42.174] Updating web proxy from GConf
[Info 21:03:42.252] All services are started 1.336868
The program 'Banshee' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1578 error_code 8 request_code 2 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I tried using kdbg to get the backtrace mentioned and gave up due to
complications with Mono.

[Bug 651824] [NEW] Flicking display when things scroll, appear, or disappear (nVidia GeForce 6150)

2010-09-30 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The display flickers, for a frame or so showing what looks like other
parts of the screen (perhaps previously displayed images) offset,
typically along the lower half of the screen. It generally happens when
there are updates - particularly new or closed windows, menus, etc.
Typing doesn't seem to do it as often, but scrolling sometimes does, as
does switching windows.

This problem appeared as soon as I booted into the Ubuntu 10.04.1 livecd's
desktop. (which would have been using the nouveau driver) and I installed
anyway hoping it would be fixed by the proprietary nVidia drivers or other
settings. I have tried a lot to fix this, with no luck (it's still doing it as
I write this) Attempts included:
All available versions of the nVidia proprietary drivers - 96, 173, current
(195 if I recall in 10.04, 256 in 10.10)
All settings of Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects
Upgrading to 10.10 (note, currently in beta or maybe RC)
Different refresh rates.

I don't know what else to try, and this problem isn't exactly easy to search
for.
Please let me know if there are things I can try, or more info I can provide.

This issue does not occur in Windows XP on the same computer.

(Note, I only have access to this computer for a couple days every two
weeks or so. Please be patient if I can't respond right away to
suggestions or requests for info that I need to use this PC to answer.)

[Bug 310862] Re: Pidgin randomly forgets all saved statuses

2010-08-25 Thread David Grossberg
So far on Lucid (10.04) I have avoided the original issue but I notice
that periodically when pidgin starts all the saved statuses are missing
Until I open the status selector a second time. If I were to close
pidgin before doing that, then I might lose the statuses just like the
original bug. (I have not tested this theory, but might try to arrange
it when I get home.)

[Bug 589298] [NEW] Nvidia driver is making kwin crash periodically

2010-06-03 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Kwin crashed and gave me the backtrace below, the KDE crash assistant found a
duplicate bug which was closed as external, so this needs to be reported here.
This usually happens some time after I have played an OpenGL game such as Gish
or World Of Goo, and occurs with kwin compositing both off or on. Sometimes it
is triggered by closing one or more windows, this time it was opening a new tab
in Firefox.

[Bug 539160] Re: JRE: 6.0-b16 SIGSEGV in libjvm.so

2010-03-22 Thread David Grossberg
No, I can't. The crash was low-occurrence and I don't want to downgrade
a (mostly) stable app. (No crashes yet with the Sun VM) - especially
because crashes can affect the server's idea of my ratio due to missed
updates.

More importantly, If "azureus as shipped with ubuntu works fine" then
how would it help find the problem with the OpenJDK VM? Wouldn't an
using app that does crash with it be how to find where the error is?

[Bug 539160] [NEW] JRE: 6.0-b16 SIGSEGV in libjvm.so

2010-03-15 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

After many non-contiguous weeks of working fine, I discovered the
following error in the terminal from which I launch Vuze when I woke up
today:

# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x7f84ad6f7e41, pid=26403, tid=140207156459792
#
# JRE version: 6.0-b16
# Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (14.0-b16 mixed mode linux-amd64 )
# Distribution: Ubuntu 9.10, package 6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1
# Problematic frame:
# V [libjvm.so+0x256e41]
#
# An error report file with more information is saved as:
# /path/to/file/hs_err_pid26403.log
#
# If you would like to submit a bug report, please include
# instructions how to reproduce the bug and visit:
# https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6/

Note that I thought I was using the Sun VM, and am now, but the bug
seems rare enough that I wouldn't be able to repro it on demand anyway.
This report is only (hopefully) an additional datapoint to help track it
down.

[Bug 496277] [NEW] Kdevelop shortcut keys conflict and reset: F9 is ambiguous

2009-12-13 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdevelop

When I press F9 to try and launch my project, it pops up a dialog that says
"The key sequence 'F9' is ambiguous. Use 'Configure Shortcuts'
from the 'Settings' menu to solve the ambiguity.
No action will be triggered."

When I use 'Configure Shortcuts' from the 'Settings' menu to solve the
ambiguity by removing the assignment from "Show Folding Markers"
(setting it to None or something else) then I can use it to launch once.
Then it resets the assignment to Show Folding Markers back to F9. and I
would have to fix it again.

[Bug 315710] Re: Linux needs exFAT support

2009-09-19 Thread David Grossberg
Not only is it much too late, I would say there is no possibility
whatsoever that they would have chosen a system that wasn't going to be
plug-and-play on the vast majority of consumer PCs.

Anything that MS didn't write (except maybe UDF, but there's probably
some reason it wasn't feasible, perhaps a reason measured in dollars)
would require a separate driver disk to use (Imagine MS putting drivers
for an open system on Windows Update - yeah right.) So it wouldn't
really be an option.

A related issue: Given that the file system of the media needs to be
supported by all the future cameras, media players, et cetera, now that
the decision has been made, any advice to 'Just reformat' would only
work if the card is going to be only PC-to-PC.

Of course even if SDXC had gone with something else this bug would still
exist (because exFAT does), it just would not be as serious an issue.

[Bug 315710] Re: Linux needs exFAT support

2009-09-14 Thread David Grossberg
The 'solution' to any potential legal issue seems obvious to me - treat
it like libdecss and host it at Medibuntu.

Now that that's out of the way, the code has to be functional (such as write
support) before it would matter. :-)
Anyone know if someone's working on it?

[Bug 395830] Re: Bitpim crashes when communicating with phone

2009-08-03 Thread David Grossberg
This happens on my system as well: Kubuntu Jaunty ( 9.04 ) amd64
I have attached the Trouble Report that bitpim made.

I also get the same error in 1.0.7.20090722 that I compiled from SVN
using the patches from 1.0.6.dfsg.1-1ubuntu2

This error occurs with both Bluetooth and USB, and I have made sure the
permissions on both are valid.

I consider this (a total lack of functionality) to be a very serious
issue.

[Bug 220628] Re: [MASTER] firefox-3.0b5 received an X Window System error: 'BadIDChoice'

2009-03-30 Thread David Grossberg
I placed the patch in libxcb1_1.1-1ubuntu1 (Hardy) and so far it seems
to work just fine.

Before patching, this bug would be the usual mode of failure for any Firefox
session that went longer than a day or two, I have not had a chance to stress
test Firefox, but I had found another program that could produce this bug on
demand:
In the game Clonk Rage ( http://www.clonk.de/cr.php ) if I attempted to change
the screen resolution it would produce the BadIDChoice error every time. Now
after the patch it correctly changes the screen resolution and the rest of the
game is playable as well (so far as I can tell from a couple of the tutorial
levels)

My system is Kubuntu Hardy x86, and my GPU is an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100
IGP, using the proprietary drivers from the standard repositories. (The
game might act differently on other systems, in case anyone else wants
to check my results)

[Bug 315710] [NEW] Linux needs exFAT support

2009-01-09 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

The SD Association has just announced a new standard for high-capacity SD
memory cards: SDXC - and the file system for this standard will be Microsoft's
exFAT. Linux (i.e. the kernel) therefore needs to support this file system
before it becomes common for portable devices and other uses.
(Yes, this is an upstream feature request, but I'm a Kubuntu user and this is
where I can track progress for my own distro)

[Bug 310862] [NEW] Pidgin randomly forgets all saved statuses

2008-12-23 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Sometimes when I log in, pidgin has lost all of the saved statuses I had
created. If it was shutdown with one of them, it defaults to Available
in the status selector, but it is still showing the status I had set on
the entries for myself in my buddy list. This is a newish problem, it's
only been happening for the last few months, although I couldn't tell
you what version did it. Before that, I had statuses that were several
years old.

I have seen this on separate computers with different architectures (x86
and x86-64) but both are Kubuntu Hardy

I thought at first that this was only happening when Pidgin (actually
the system it's running on) crashed, but I have seen it after normal
shutdowns as well.

If there is any way I can gather more info to help, please let me know.

Kubuntu Hardy x86:

2008-12-02 Thread David Grossberg
Sorry, I just realized that I failed to update this after performing the
experiments I mentioned in the last comment - not that it matters, they
made no difference. The only thing I can think of that happened which
was unusual the first time I logged in as the new user was that I
accidentally logged it in to Gnome instead of my usual KDE. I still
don't see how that could have caused a system-wide change though.

[Bug 280579] [NEW] Xorg using 100% of a CPU and not displaying anything

2008-10-08 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

I am using apport-cli over SSH to file this, because until I reboot the
PC it is unusable. Note that programs running on the PC are still
responding, (I can see them on htop over ssh - and other network
functions work)

Previously in this session I was having trouble with xscreensaver, so I
restarted it.
Hopefully apport will attach something of value (although I don't have much
hope for that since it is running against a still-executing program)

[Bug 268849] Re: gthumb crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-10-06 Thread David Grossberg
I can't explain this, but either
  a) installing gthumb-dbgsym (libglib2-dbg was already installed, and the
dbgsym package was out of date) (may not be the precise names)
Or
  b) creating a new user
somehow caused this problem to vanish entirely. (For my regular user account
also!)

I haven't tried removing gthumb-dbgsym (since I am too glad to have back the
best of the image viewers I've seen on Linux) but I can try that temporarily
when I get home. I'll also try removing the user account I created.
There were no updated packages available between it not working and it suddenly
working.

[Bug 268849] Re: gthumb crashed with SIGSEGV

After removing .thumbnails (and .gconf/apps/gthumb and .gnome2/gthumb)
the command line output (no parameters) is as usual:

converting comment system...done.Segmentation fault (core dumped)

There was a pause of several seconds between 'done.' and 'Segmentation'

I of course have a fresh .crash file from this that I could either attach or
file a new bug with if you like.
Please let me know if there is anything I can try to help diagnose this.

[Bug 268849] Re: gthumb crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-09-26 Thread David Grossberg
When running from the command line (with or without parameters) it
simply outputs an error of the form 'Received SIGSEGV, core dumped' (I
don't have that PC in front of me to get the exact wording)

I have not yet tried removing .thumbnails but as I mentioned I did
remove all of the stored settings. I also tried purging and
reinstalling the gthumb package, and then I tried reinstalling every
installed package on the system that is backed by a repository. It
didn't make any difference.

I'll remove .thumbnails when I get home. Please let me know if you have
any other suggestions for me.

Thanks

[Bug 255774] Re: Pidgin crashed when I wasn't looking

2008-08-07 Thread David Grossberg
Hmm. What's wrong with "apport-cli -f -p pidgin -c
/var/crash/_usr_bin_pidgin.1000.crash" that it won't actually attach
anything useful?

[Bug 255774] [NEW] Pidgin crashed when I wasn't looking

2008-08-07 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

At one point I did an ls /var/crash and noticed there was one for pidgin (and
then I noticed It wasn't running anymore)
Hopefully this time it will actually include the debugging into - I just
submitted bug 255771 that failed.

[Bug 253510] [NEW] FF 3.01 Crash (no dump) on Kubuntu Hardy

2008-07-30 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Firefox 3.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2

After much very heavy usage, it crashed right on schedule but there was no core
dump - apport or otherwise. Is there a way to enable this for Firefox crashes
due to X errors on Kubuntu? (I have already enabled apport, which has caught
crashes besides this one)
Here is the final terminal output (I ran it with --sync):

The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this connection)'.
  (Details: serial 916311216 error_code 14 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:

I forgot to mention, this bug (and bug 240573 ) left Firefox using 100%
of one CPU core - which due to the process and thermal management
switching the thread around meant 25% of each of my four cores on
average.

[Bug 246163] [NEW] Another FF3 Freeze when very overloaded

2008-07-06 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

This is an apport report like bug 243664 but the crash is in a different
place and acts differently (the other one left it using 100% of one CPU
core, this one did not)

Version 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 and run with --sync
(using Tab Mix Plus to keep a very large session open)

[Bug 240573] [NEW] FF3 Freeze when very overloaded

2008-06-16 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I am a digital packrat, and using TMP I keep a very large session open
at all times. (I have enough ram for it though). Usually Firefox just
crashes with no apport dump, but this time it was hung, so hopefully
there is some data. The X error below is very often mentioned when FF
crashes on my system. I was running it --sync this time.

Version 3.0~rc2+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~fta1~hardy from
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fta/ubuntu hardy main

Final Terminal output:

The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this connection)'.
  (Details: serial 952681123 error_code 14 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:

[Bug 162604] Re: Bitpim crashes on launch

Ah, looks like I had installed the package from the bitpim homepage
before upgrading to gutsy. The (downgrade to) the official gutsy
package seems to be working now. Sorry for the bogus bug.

[Bug 114316] [apport] s2s crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2007-05-12 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: jabberd2

This problem has existed since at least Breezy. I actually have a
script set up to re-launch this process every time it fails so that I
can stay logged in to Jabber, but now that I have apport I can submit an
actual bug report with actual debug info.

Note: I suggest simply upgrading to the latest upstream version, the
current one is Very old.

If any more information is needed, please let me know.

[Bug 66752] Bitpim uses 100% CPUs and fills all memory

2006-10-18 Thread David Grossberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bitpim

Steps 1, 2 (any order) Start bitpim, connect phone by USB (In my case an
LG vx6100)

Step 3, choose Edit -> Settings and in the settings window click Browse
(for a com port)

Step 4, Watch the system grind to a halt, until one manages to kill
bitpim

Notes:
I am using Ubuntu Edgy x86 on a dual core Turion 64 x2, and installed Ubuntu's
bitpim instead of using alien (that will be my next attempt)

This does not seem to be a permissions issue because it happens with
Bitpim as root as well. Also, I know that this phone syncs correctly in
Windows or in earlier Ubuntu with the Bitpim RPM installed by alien

Also, this phone also works fine as a modem on /dev/ttyACM0, but Bitpim
can't use that port for it. It also doesn't autodetect the phone

unless Jabberd2 is Finally upgraded, because I believe it is this bug:
