This bug also affects me (Ubuntu 11-10, 64-bit). It's sporadic -- sometimes Unity will show the menu bar for the main pidgin window when it has focus, and sometimes it will not. Sometimes killing the pidgin process and restarting will make the menu appear, and sometimes it won't. I cannot find any reliable pattern to reproduce the bug, but it does occur frequently. This bug affects me as well. Sometimes moving the pointer gently to the right side of my primary display restores the pointer completely, and sometimes it restores it to a slight scrambled version. [Bug 907349] [NEW] Mouse movement horizontally compressed on second display after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: I'm using the proprietary fglrx display driver with Ubuntu 11-10 on a 64-bit system. I'm using two displays: 1. the laptop screen 2. an external monitor connected via HDMI After suspend/resume, both displays still render correctly, and the mouse works properly on the first (laptop) display, but on the second display, its horizontal movement is compressed to about the left 20% of the screen. Disconnecting and reconnecting the second display does not help the mouse (though it continues to render correctly). If I log out, so that the system reverts to mirror mode, then log back in, the mouse works correctly again. I see the same problem with Maverick amd64 and the ATI fglrx driver: text and graphical elements inside windows are badly distorted, to the point that they're unusable. Great suggestion, Mathieu -- unfortunately, NM overwrote all the 127.0.0.n lines (not just 127.0.0.1), so back to the drawing board. I can't think of any way to do this without setting up a full DNS server just for my laptop. I'm betting there are a lot of other people doing web development who will discover the same problem. [Bug 659872] [NEW] Aliases in /etc/hosts overwritten
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager I develop several web sites on my laptop, and each one is a different virtual host through Apache. Until Lucid, I was able to alias these hosts in /etc/hosts, like this 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain myhost1.localdomain myhost2.localdomain myhost3.localdomain Starting with Maverick, however, NetworkManager overwrites the 127.0.0.1 line every time it initiates a new network connection, so these aliases are lost. It is fair to argue that aliasing 127.0.0.1 isn't ideal, but as far as I can find, NetworkManager doesn't offer any alternative for aliasing the bound IP address. For example, if I connect to WiFi, it adds a line like 192.168.0.101 snape There seems to be no way to get it to do 192.168.0.101 snape myhost1.localdomain myhost2.localdomain myhost3.localdomain NetworkManager should not overwrite the 127.0.0.1 line in /etc/hosts until there is an alternative method available for aliasing on the local machine, without setting up an entire local DNS server. As I mentioned earlier, this is a big usability problem because it often prevents a file from opening at startup, and switching to the low-latency kernel is a pretty extreme solution (especially since it kills battery life on a notebook). Fortunately, there's a much easier work-around. Go to Settings -> Configure Rosegarden... -> Sequencer -> Synchronisation and change the timer setting from "(auto)" to "system timer", and the warning will disappear. You can also try "rtc timer" if you have the snd-rtctimer module loaded and need 1ms resolution instead of 4ms resolution (I don't). Does someone plan to implement that in gutsy in the next four weeks, or is there already a feature freeze? The first time you run X after a clean install of gutsy, it tells you that you can enable restricted drivers for better functionality and offers a dialog to do so -- every new user with an nvidia card will see that, and most will probably choose it. As soon as you do that and reboot, compiz will start causing problems; if you don't do that, you can't use 3D apps with nvidia. If you want to use 3D apps, you have to figure out on your own (no automatic prompts) to go to the System/Preferences/Appearance dialog, choose the "Desktop" tab, and check the "No effects" radio button. That's not intuitive. I agree that this problem will affect only a minority of Ubuntu users -- probably less than 20% -- and that it's nvidia's fault rather than compiz's, but what benefits do we get from defaulting to compiz to offset that problem? Why not make gutsy stable for those users as well? You're not really doing anything useful for the other 80% anyway, aside from a bit of eye candy. Reversing the logic doesn't work, because in one configuration, gutsy will won't work out of the box for a lot of people, while in the second configuration, it will. Why not wait until there are fixed nvidia drivers in gutsy to make compiz the default? BTW, search for "compiz freeze" to find people with the other problem -- you don't need *everyone* to be having the problem, just a significant number, for Ubuntu to start losing its excellent reputation as the distro that actually works out of the box. Stacked up against all this, what real benefits do we get from forcing compiz in before the distro is stable with it? Cute window animations? [Bug 130325] Re: [nvidia-glx] Don't enable compiz by default for gutsy
I'm an experienced user (Linux since 1993, Minix before that), but I lost several hours before I realized that glxgears and FlightGear were crashing X due to compiz. I *strongly* recommend disabling compiz by default in gutsy, since it provides nothing but eye candy, and having it running means that 3D apps will crash X by default in gutsy for all boxes running new NVIDIA cards -- it's easy enough to enable in the GUI for people who want it. Functionality should always win over flash. Even when I'm not trying to run 3D apps, compiz seems very awkward on my new HP TX1220 compared with metacity -- there are sometimes freezes of several seconds, for example, especially when I'm trying to edit in OpenOffice. It may be cute, but it's not practical. -- [nvidia-glx] 3D GL apps crash X when using compiz due to unmaked ABI change (gutsy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130325 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 67568] Re: error when opening Rosegarden program: "System timer resolution is too low"
A couple of releases ago, at least, the problem wasn't that the warning appears, but that the warning dialog would often trigger a bug and prevent a file from loading (race condition?) when RoseGarden was launched with a file argument. I'm not sure if that is fixed now or not, because I haven't used RoseGarden much recently. For the program itself, though, it would be nice to add an option to disable the warning dialog. The system timer affects only the quality of playback, not of score editing, MIDI generation, etc., so a lot of users just won't care and don't need to see the warning every time they launch. That's an upstream issue, though. -- error when opening Rosegarden program: "System timer resolution is too low" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67568 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: flightgear With today's update, FlightGear crashes on startup with an uncaught sg_throwable right after trying to load scenery tiles. [Bug 67568] Re: error when opening Rosegarden program
This happens because the system timer in the kernel is set to only 250HZ. I think it goes back and forth, because I wasn't seeing this error for a while, and now I'm seeing it again in Edgy. ** Changed in: rosegarden (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- error when opening Rosegarden program https://launchpad.net/bugs/67568 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is actually a kernel problem, not (primarily) a Rosegarden problem, so the bug should be assigned to linux-image-generic or something similar. -- error when opening Rosegarden program https://launchpad.net/bugs/67568 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 68591] Edgy: subpixel smoothing does not work in OpenOffice
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org With subpixel smoothing, fonts are rendered very poorly in OpenOffice. 1. Start with a fresh user directory. 2. Enable subpixel smoothing in the System/Preferences/Font desktop dropdown menu. 3. Launch OpenOffice writer. Fonts are rendered very irregularly when subpixel smoothing is enabled, but are acceptable (not ideal) when best shapes are enabled. OpenOffice seems to be doing its own font rendering, rather than using the system engine. No changes made in OpenOffice view preferences fix the problem, though they do result in different kinds of ugliness. Fonts are fine in all other applications tested. ** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Edgy: subpixel smoothing does not work in OpenOffice https://launchpad.net/bugs/68591 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
