[Bug 194308] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.9 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-03-07 Thread David Mills
From looking at your TerminalLog, it appears that your problem is
python, not update-manager.

These lines appear each time a package is to be installed:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1593, in module
main()
File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1587, in main

vinfo = parse_versions(vstring)
  File /usr/share/pycentral-data/pyversions.py, line 58, in parse_versions
raise ValueError, 'error parsing Python-Version attribute'
ValueError: error parsing Python-Version attribute

This problem appears for python-apt as well as the update manager packages.

Also:
Preparing to replace python-central 0.5.15ubuntu3 (using
.../python-central_0.5.50ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement python-central ...

Appears just before the problems start. I think what we have here is a
python-central bug

Nop, Intel, driver intel not i810.

This might also be related to the screensaver, since it appears to have

since I disabled the screensaver, everything seems to be OK. I can't

[Bug 161150] Compiz locks screen randomly on ubuntu gutsy

2007-11-09 Thread David Mills
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When running compiz on ubuntu Gutsy, the screen stops accepting input
(keyboard or mouse) randomly (once or twice a day).

When the screen is blocked, the cursor still moves around the screen,
and keeps it's shape (arror, I ...).

It is possible to recover the screen using ctrlaltsysR then
ctrlaltf5 to get to a usable console, and killing compiz.real from
this console.

Note: I tried to run xkill from the console (using export DISPLAY=:0)
but I was told that it couldn't grab the cursor.

[Bug 115406] Ubiquity doesn't handle the case of /boot being on a different partition from /

2007-05-18 Thread David Mills
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When I installed ubuntu 7.04 on a laptop, I made /boot a seperate
partition, to get arround a possible cylinder 1024 bug.

The install finished fine, but grub wasn't configured correctly, the
entries for Ubuntu referenced my / partition, using /boot/... instead of
referencing my boot partition, using the path /vmlinuz...

fixing /boot/grub/menu.lst but only for an experienced user.

[Bug 115407] Ubiquity partition manager mounts partitions before it's finished checking them.

[Bug 58424] Re: Can't calculate the upgrade with unofficial mesa/compiz packages

2006-10-24 Thread David Mills
OK, I'll just add my grain of salt to the xorg bug.

After upgrading, my nvidia drivers wouldn't load (normal, since I'd
installed the beta 9xxx drivers from nzone), so I edited my xorg.conf to
use the nv driver.

On restarting xorg, it didn't (restart). I unfortunately don't have the
logs (I re-installed from edgy beta and upgraded to current) but they
mentioned version incompatibilities between the xorg binary and the
modules, which meant that said modules refused to load.

2006-10-23 Thread David Mills
I'll second that, the upgrade worked, just my system didn't...

The xorg problem persisted with all drivers, but that's another issue
(probably made worse by my use of beta nvidia drivers, compiz and all)

Great job, and thanks again

On my laptop (compaq presario 1200, celeron 500, trident cyberblade i1

lspci gives the following information about id 00:07.4:

btw I didn't mention that this is using a edgy beta 2 alternate install,
and using update manager to bring it up to head.
