[Bug 1653828] [NEW] Grammatical mistake in package description

2017-01-03 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

This is an excerpt from the description of the package:

The use of this driver is discouraged if your hw is new enough (ca.
2007 and newer). You can try uninstalling this driver and let the
server use it's builtin modesetting driver instead.

Obviously, "it's" should be "its"; "builtin" also should be "built-in",
and "hw" probably should be all caps ("HW").

[Bug 1068466] Re: none of the emulators start, even with ROMS

2014-06-30 Thread David Nemeskey
Same here, Ubuntu 13.10. I am writing this in the vain hope that
somebody reads it, but I don't have much hope for a fix. I don't think
there is a maintainer in Ubuntu for this package, and in Debian, 12 out
of 13 bugs opened against vice are still open. The title of one of those
is vice package maintainer not checking e-mail. :-D

I tried the package in Vice, which at least starts OK, but true disk
emulation does not work, nor do keyset joysticks. I cannot open bugs for
those issues because I cannot be sure it is not because of using a
package from a different release, so no C64 games for me. :(

[Bug 1263066] [NEW] No way to configure wallpaper placement

2013-12-20 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 13.10, there is no way to configure how the wallpaper is
placed -- i.e. whether a wallpaper with a different resolution to the
screen should be cropped, streched, centered, etc.

This option is missing from both System Settings and from the Unity
Tweak Tool. I could add the latter to the bug, but really, the option
should be in System Settings proper, which I don't know the package of.

[Bug 133103] Re: Java bug: getSystemLookAndFeelClassName() returns Metal, not GTK

2013-04-29 Thread David Nemeskey
It is still an issue in 12.04. The following program:

import javax.swing.UIManager;

public class Test {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println(System: +
UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
System.out.println(CrossPlatform: +
UIManager.getCrossPlatformLookAndFeelClassName());
for (UIManager.LookAndFeelInfo laf :
UIManager.getInstalledLookAndFeels())
System.out.println(Installed:  + laf);
}
}

prints

System: javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel
CrossPlatform: javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel
Installed: javax.swing.UIManager$LookAndFeelInfo[Metal
javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel]
Installed: javax.swing.UIManager$LookAndFeelInfo[Nimbus
com.sun.java.swing.plaf.nimbus.NimbusLookAndFeel]
Installed: javax.swing.UIManager$LookAndFeelInfo[CDE/Motif
com.sun.java.swing.plaf.motif.MotifLookAndFeel]
Installed: javax.swing.UIManager$LookAndFeelInfo[GTK+
com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel]

As you see, the system LaF is still Metal. Under Gnome, it is GTK.

I am aware that for KDE, a QtLookAndFeel would be the best match, but
since no such thing exist, UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()
should default to GTK as the closest match (especially since by default,
KDE sets the GTK style to QtCurve and the fonts to the ones used by KDE
applications).

[Bug 1114614] [NEW] Lock screen action should also turn the screen off

2013-02-03 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

If the user locks the screen via the Lock Screen action (Ctrl + Alt +
L), the screen should be turned off. What happens now is that the screen
goes black, but the backlight remains on, consuming the battery and
serving as an unnecessary light source. Only after the number of minutes
specified in the Brightness and Lock settings panel elapse is the screen
turned off.

I see no reason why this should be like this: the Turn screen off when
inactive for: X minutes setting is, I guess, there to recognize the
situation when the user forgets to log out / put the machine to sleep
when he leaves it. However, when the user locks the screen, it is, in
effect, a way to tell the OS I'll be inactive. So, it would only make
sense if the screen was turned off.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS.

[Bug 1114626] [NEW] Watching a video in Firefox counts as being inactive, so the screen turns off

2013-02-03 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

I was watching the videos here:
http://spoonyexperiment.com/2012/08/11/ultima-9-ascension-finale/ , when
the screen suddenly (albeit gradually) turned off. Apparently the number
of minutes specified in the Brighness and Lock settings panel had
elapsed, so to save power Ubuntu turned off the screen. The problem is:
watching a video IS an activity. I don't know whether it is only
Firefox, or it happens with other browsers as well. Totem is clearly not
affected by this problem.

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS. Firefox is at version 18.0.1.

[Bug 1061190] [NEW] could not mount /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 M for manual S for skip

2012-10-03 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

I get the message in the bug summary during the boot process. The boot
takes quite a long time and also, the Resources tab in the Gnome System
Monitor reports the swap is not available.

I am on 12.04, and during installation, I selected the encrypted home
option. Though it is a fresh install, I left my /home partition intact,
and it dates back to ... I don't even know, maybe 10.04? At first I
installed Kubuntu, but since then I have changed to Unity and I have
uninstalled the Kubuntu desktop.

I am aware of bug #874774, but I felt the need to open a new bug report,
since even though the fix has supposedly already been released for that
one, I still experience this problem.

[Bug 1029583] Re: Dell Inspiron 1420 without battery: processor.ignore_ppc does nothing

2012-08-04 Thread David Nemeskey
I have tested the bug with the latest 3.5 kernel:

uname -a
Linux *** 3.5.0-030500rc7-generic #201207142035 SMP Sun Jul 15 00:42:54 UTC
2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Unfortunately the problem still persists.

Actually, I have forgot to add that I experimented with the cpufreq-*
utilities and if I cpufreq-set the performance governor, the processors
will run happily at 1.8 GHz. It's when I apply the ondemand (which, of
course, is also the default) governor that I can get only 800 MHz.
Running cpufreq-info at 1 second intervals one can see how the 1.8GHz
percentage drops, regardless of CPU load:

  cpufreq stats: 1.80 GHz:10.23%, 1.80 GHz:0.00%, 1.20 GHz:0.00%, 800

[Bug 1019816] Re: dash in Unity 2D shows icons and responds to typing very slowly

2012-08-04 Thread David Nemeskey
OK, a few details to make the description more specific. The behavior
concerns the Application lense ONLY. If you bring the Dash up with
Super, or Super+F for the files, there is no problem with the speed.
It's only Super+A that's a dog.

Also, I have kubuntu-desktop installed as well, so maybe that's related?

[Bug 706089] Re: Frequency scaling doesn't work in current kernels

2012-07-26 Thread David Nemeskey
Christopher: I have just commented on this issue a few days ago, how
come it doesn't qualify as 'recent activity'?! Yes, this problem is
still very much an issue.

If you wish, I could also execute the apport command. Is it OK or do you
require the debug information from the original reporter?

[Bug 1029583] [NEW] Dell Inspiron 1420 without battery: processor.ignore_ppc does nothing

2012-07-26 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Insprion 1420 (Core 2 Duo @ 1.8GHz), and the battery has
recently died. Because of this, the CPUs have been downclocked to the
minimum frequency, 800 MHz.

I have tried the workaround described in bug #706089 (Frequency scaling doesn't
work in current kernels) and on various pages around the web, namely, adding
the processor.ignore_ppc=1 directive to grub. However, it does not have any
effect: my CPUs are still running at 800 MHz. The bios limits
(/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/bios_limit) are set to 1801000, so that should not be
a problem.

[Bug 1024663] [NEW] Custom regional formats

2012-07-14 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Regional formats should be customizable. Currently the user is capable
of selecting a locale, and that locale will determine how dates are
displayed, the first day of the week, etc. However, it is not possible
to override any of these choices -- it's a 'take it or leave it'
decision. There are several problems with that:

1. If the system language is English, and I set the RF to Hungarian, the
names of months, days will be Hungarian, while the rest of the interface
remains English, which is confusing.

2. RF settings apply to the command line too; once again, introducing a
different date format, names of days and months, which may cause scripts
to stop working. That may be a problem for developers (or for users who
download scripts from a developer's page, which, with smartphones,
Calibre, etc., is not so uncommon as someone might think). The settings
for the GUI and the command line should be distinct.

3. Very often one would like to change just one setting (A4 paper size
for printing, Monday as the first day of the week, etc.), which is
currently not possible.

I understand there was a similar bug, number 40669. However, the fix
only added the Regional Formats tab, and ignored part of the problem of
the reporter: it's impossible to configure a system that uses English
GUI strings and the rest in native format.

This functionality has been available in Windows and KDE forever. Ubuntu
has parted ways with Gnome with regard to the DE, and it would be very
welcome if we could also say goodbye to the Gnome mindset and actually
give some power to the user. After all, even smartphones, which are
definitely consumer devices, allow this type of customization.

Public bug reported:

I've found this question on askubuntu:

pressing and holding the Super key does not bring up the hint overlay in

[Bug 1019816] [NEW] dash in Unity 2D shows icons and responds to typing very slowly

2012-07-01 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1. Press Super+A to bring up the dash (applications lense)
2. Type, say, firef
3. Press ESC to clear the Search Applications field
4. Press ESC to exit the dash
5. Press Super+A to bring up the dash again

What happens:
After 1. The dash appears, the applications arranged in the grid as they
should, but without any icons. After ~5 seconds, the icons appear.
After 2. The user have to wait about 5 seconds until the application list is
filtered
After 3. The user have to wait yet another 5 seconds until the filter is
removed from the lense
After 4. Once again, it takes about 5 seconds for the dash to disappear
After 5. Starting the dash a second time, the icons show right away.

What should happen:
1-5. should happen instantaneously.

What I've described may well be the result of two separate bugs (one for
the icons, one for the rest); however, I don't think I am the one to
decide that.

2012-07-01 Thread David Nemeskey
I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 -- Core2Duo T7100 (1.8 GHz) with 2 GB RAM.
I'd be very sad if this system didn't make the cut!

Although Details in System Settings does not recognize my video card
(Driver Unknown), it's an Intel GM 965, which runs standard Unity (or
KWin, for that matter) happily. That's why I was surprised to see the
behavior described by this bug.

[Bug 730155] [NEW] ibus in Kubuntu uses the GTK gui, icons missing

2011-03-06 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ibus

What happened:
I am using ibus for Japanese input on Kubuntu 10.10. (I used uim before.) I
have configured it via im-switch. However, even though I am using KDE, the GTK
panel applet is used. This can be seen from two things:
1. the icons in the right-click menu are replaced with the generic no icon
icon (see screenshot);
2. the Preferences menu item brings up the GTK dialog, which is ugly, since it
is not even using the theme set up in System Settings.

When I first started the ibus daemon from the command line, (yet without
im-switch,) both the QT and the GTK applet were started.

What should happen:
Under KDE, the QT applet should be started.

Same thing here with on Dell Vostro 1015 with Intel graphics. Sometimes
it freezes after 5 minutes of usage if on battery. Turning on wireless
indeed seems to trigger the problem much more frequently.

I installed the 2.6.36 kernel from kernel-ppa, as well as the xorg
version from ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates, but nothing has changed: still
freezing as often as before.

[Bug 662071] [NEW] Firefox drawing problems after page up/page down with Kwin

2010-10-17 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

(Page here refers to a pageful of content displayed in the viewport,
NOT an html page)

I am using Kubuntu 10.10, and when Kwin desktop effects are enabled,
Firefox fails to draw the page content correctly after a page down/page
up command: artifacts of the previous page remain on the screen. The
extent to which the old content remains varies; it can be a few pixels-
wide line, or the whole previous page. The behavior is irrespective of
whether the paging command is activated via the keyboard or clicking on
the scrollbar. The cursor keys, or dragging the scrollbar does not seem
to trigger the problem; however, maybe it is just that it is more
difficult to spot.

The problem does not appear if Kwin compositioning is switched off.
However, even with compositioning turned on, only Firefox 3.6 shows this
kind of behavior; other applications, including Firefox 4.0 beta are
unaffected.

[Bug 601536] Re: KDE 4.5 RC: Login Manager forgets user name

2010-08-16 Thread David Nemeskey
Reinhard: thanks, that (almost) solved it. Apparently you need to
execute both commands recursively, so

sudo chgrp -R kdm kdm
sudo chmod -R g=rwx kdm

Now it works, but still it would be nicer to have a regular (automatic)
fix for it.

[Bug 601536] [NEW] KDE 4.5 RC: Login Manager forgets user name

2010-07-04 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm

I am using Kubuntu, and recently I have upgraded to the KDE 4.5 RC
packages (http://www.kubuntu.org/node/157). Aside from the upgrade
procedure being a total, albeit not luckily once-in-a-lifetime disaster,
there are some bugs that can be reproduced easily. This is one of them.

Before the update, kdm remembered the last successfully logged in user
(me), and I only had to enter my password to log in. This is not the
case anymore: I have to type in my user name as well. I am not ignorant
to the existance of the new Convenience tab in the Login Manager page
of System Settings; however, even though the Preselect User is set to
Previous, the behavior remains the same (Actually, I think it had been
already set to Previous when I checked it the first time.)

Screenshot attached.

[Bug 577595] Re: huge list of dependencies for Kile

2010-07-03 Thread David Nemeskey
I agree fully with this report. 600M/1.4G for a GUI for editing a tex(t)
file?!

I understand your concern about consistency with Debian, so maybe this bug
should be opened in their bug tracker as well? Also,
The reason some of the -doc packages are installed, is not because they are
kile recommends, but because eg. lilypond recommends lilypond-doc
That does not explain at all why lilypong itself is installed in the first
place. Along with random ttf fonts, and a bunch of stuff I could care less
about. Also note that texlive only requires 77M/217M.

So please do something about it, this is ridiculous.

[Bug 569466] Re: Firefox messes up profile, cannot click tabs

2010-05-23 Thread David Nemeskey
Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not answering earlier but it seems that
I was using the Mozilla PPA version when I experienced the problems. For
the past month, I have been using the default Ubuntu version, and I have
had no problems thus far. So I am not really sure what to do; is there a
way to assign the bug to the Mozilla PPA? If not (would be a shame,
since it begs the question what the difference between the vanilla and
Ubuntu version is in this regard), then feel free to close the bug, if
you wish to do so.

[Bug 581308] [NEW] Cannot stop file system check in kdm

2010-05-16 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm

When fsck starts during startup In Kubuntu 10.04, it is not possible to
stop it. Even though 'Press C to stop all file system checks' or sth
similar is written on the screen, it does not work. I tried pressing C,
Shift-C and Ctrl-C (the latter being the default in previous versions)
to no avail.

Furthermore, the check seems very slow and the percentage count stops at
90%. Luckily about a minute later the login screen shows up.

As mentioned before, I use Kubuntu Lucid with kdm. My home partition (I
guess that is the one that was being checked, it's not written on the
screen) is on ext4.

[Bug 576024] [NEW] Kubuntu: incomplete Karmic-Lucid upgrade (no touchpad configuration, etc)

2010-05-05 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

I am using Kubuntu, and I have just recently upgraded my system from
Karmic to Lucid. I followed the official procedure described at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades/Kubuntu.

However, the functionality of my system just does not match the release notes
(http://www.kubuntu.org/news/10.04-lts-release).
- I have no touchpad configuration section in System Settings
- I had to install kmozillahelper to get KDE file dialogs in Firefox (even
though job notification integration had been working before that too)
- I get a Nepomuk error message when I start Kontact, it seems to be missing
the RDF database. This was like this with the KDE beta packages in Karmic too,
but I expected this message to disappear with Lucid.

Right now, I have only the official Lucid repositories enabled in apt. Before
the upgrade, I had had kubuntu-ppa enabled.

...to.

OK, I have found the solution: kubuntu-desktop has not been installed by
the upgrade procedure (apparently I had removed it earlier). So, the
upgrade procedure should make sure that kubuntu-desktop is installed. I
think this was actually the case for Karmic, I think I recall it
installing kubuntu-desktop for me.

[Bug 557514] Re: [Lucid] Phonon pulseaudio support is broken

2010-05-02 Thread David Nemeskey
I completely second that. This situation is unacceptable.

What's interesting is that Amarok doesn't produce any sound at all,
while Kaffeine, Skype, etc. happily uses the sound card. Until I start
playing a flash video in Firefox, that is...

[Bug 557514] Re: [Lucid] Phonon pulseaudio support is broken

2010-04-27 Thread David Nemeskey
Daniel: this bug IS a kitten killer. I cannot get sound from two
applications at the same time! The thing is, it worked in Karmic with
pulse (obviously), but it also worked before with just ALSA! However,
now since I upgraded to Lucid, it has stopped working.

If the Kubuntu devs decide to ship a completely broken pulse, at least
tell us how to have the old (pre-pulse) back.

All I have in System Settings/Multimedia is:
- Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server (disabled)
- HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog)
- Jack Audio Connection Kit (which doesn't work either, it wasn't there before
the upgrade; I think it was pulled in by pulse)

Is there a way I can get at least ALSA mixing?

I have just updated my system to Lucid, and while I have Pulse

Is this setup change related to this bug, or should I open a new one for

[Bug 569466] [NEW] Firefox messes up profile, cannot click tabs

2010-04-24 Thread David Nemeskey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Sometimes when several tabs are open, Firefox goes nuts: it stops
loading pages, or does it very slow, and it is successful in about 10%
of the time. The tab bar stops reacting to mouse clicks, though ctrl-tab
works. Even if I close the window, the process will not stop, I have to
kill it manually. Then, if I restart Firefox, the problem does not go
away: the tabs remain unreponsive, pages do not load, etc.

As far as I know, the only cure is to create a new profile, which is a
pain.

I am using 9.10.
Package version: 3.6.2~hg20100218r33594+nobinonly-0ubuntu2~umd1~karmic.
However, it has happened with earlier versions as well.

Please let me know what additional information you need.

[Bug 243856] Re: Flash under Firefox sometimes loses keyboard events

2010-04-12 Thread David Nemeskey
Hyung JIn Han: I am using uim, and still I am experiencing this problem,
so I guess it's not scim-related. I have not tried without uim, so it is
possible that there is no problem without any IME, but I don't know.

Still, Chrome doesn't suffer from this problem, so I don't see why this

[Bug 243856] Re: Flash under Firefox sometimes loses keyboard events

2010-03-27 Thread David Nemeskey
BrianGilman, Ken: true and true. The problem is apparently know by Adobe
(https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-295), yet it's still unresolved
there. BTW: it appears on other systems as well, not just Ubuntu. Also,
the issue really does not happen (or is not so perceivable) on Chromium.
So I guess this is really a Firefox + Flash problem, which is
incidentally what I wrote in the summary description.

Maybe this problem is related to
