[Bug 293012] Re: glxinfo badRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)

2012-05-16 Thread David Watson
I had a similar problem which I solved by reistalling my graphics drivers. I'm
running an AMD card on ubuntu 64. I followed the guide here.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
I hope this helps

Re: [Bug 849255] Re: package vsftpd 2.3.2-3ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2011-09-15 Thread David Watson
Hi Serge ..

I was able to get this package to work using a work around .. The issue
seems to be that there is already a group for ftp (106) which has been
assigned to gdm .. hence it will not complete the install process ..

The workaround I used was to create an ftp group gid: 123 and then call
the install process again ..

This may not be the best fix, but it did seem to get around the install
issue ..

Cheers

Dave W.

[Bug 674534] Re: Update-notifier incorrectly reports security updates (including on login)

2011-01-07 Thread David Watson
Whilst investigating another problem I've just realized that the
behaviour described above for apt-get --simulate update appears to be
caused by the ordering of repos in /etc/apt/sources.list. If the
lucid/karmic security repo is listed first, apt-get --simulate update
reports that there are a mix of security and non-essential updates
required. If the lucid/karmic updates repo is listed first (and the
security updates repo is second), apt-get --simulate update reports that
there are no security updates available but the same number of non-
essential security updates. Altering the repo order will change the
behaviour of apt-get update.

Whether this is a design issue in apt-get, or a race condition, it seems
to be this that causes the disparity between apt-get and update-notifier
(and which will also break Nagios checks using the Ubuntu bundled
nagios-check-apt-updates script for pending security updates, or any
other similar tools that attempt to hook the same reporting mechanism).

[Bug 670015] Re: Scponly-full preventing rsync due to "-e" option

2010-11-02 Thread David Watson
Current Lucid rsync client:

da...@ubuntu:~$ rsync --version
rsync version 3.0.7 protocol version 30

I'm not 100% clear on the exact implications of doing this, but it
appears that forcing the rsync client to downgrade to the older version
29 rsync protocol does enable scponly-full chrooted rsync.

Verbose client output:

This may be a potential workaround.

The last release of an rsync with version 29 protocol was 4 years ago:

http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/src/rsync-2.6.9-NEWS

And version 30 was introduced here:

http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/src/rsync-3.0.0-NEWS

There may be some features added or bugs addressed since version 29 that
may make this impractical.

[Bug 670015] [NEW] Scponly-full preventing rsync due to "-e" option

2010-11-02 Thread David Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scponly

Binary package hint: scponly-full

The package scponly-full that allows chrooted scponly access prevents
rsync from being used to transfer files, due to the presence of a "-e"
option.

Versions

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04

$ apt-cache policy scponly-full
scponly-full:
  Installed: 4.8-4
  Candidate: 4.8-4
  Version table:
 *** 4.8-4 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

da...@ubuntu:~$ apt-cache policy rsync
rsync:
  Installed: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.7-1ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Steps To Reproduce

Install clean VM of Lucid server, patch, install latest scponly-full and
then create a test scponly user. Unfortunately there is a bug in the
current Lucid scponly-full package that prevents this from working out
of the box, so had to follow the process and workaround documented in
bug 668366:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scponly/+bug/668366

Once scponly-full is working correctly, create some test content and try
copying the data to the scponly user's incoming directory:

cd ~
mkdir dir1
echo hello > dir1/file1
rsync -rv dir1 scponly-patc...@localhost:/incoming

Client output:

rsync -rv dir1 scponly-patc...@localhost:/incoming
FILE_STRUCT_LEN=24, EXTRA_LEN=4
cmd= machine=localhost user=scponly-patched path=/incoming
cmd[0]=ssh cmd[1]=-l cmd[2]=scponly-patched cmd[3]=localhost cmd[4]=rsync
cmd[5]=--server cmd[6]=-vre.iLsf cmd[7]=. cmd[8]=/incoming
opening connection using: ssh -l scponly-patched localhost rsync --server
-vre.iLsf . /incoming
note: iconv_open("UTF-8", "UTF-8") succeeded.

Tailing server auth.log shows:

Nov 2 09:24:59 ubuntu sshd[1427]: Accepted password for scponly-patched from
::1 port 36359 ssh2
Nov 2 09:24:59 ubuntu sshd[1427]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for

Enable more verbose debugging on the server:

echo 2 > /etc/scponly/debuglevel

[Bug 668366] [NEW] Scponly-full broken on default Lucid install?

2010-10-29 Thread David Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scponly-full

The package scponly-full that allows chrooted scponly access appears to
be broken on Lucid server.

Versions

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04

$ apt-cache policy scponly-full
scponly-full:
  Installed: 4.8-4
  Candidate: 4.8-4
  Version table:
 *** 4.8-4 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Steps To Reproduce

1) Download ubuntu-10.04-server-amd64.iso

2) Install vanilla installation using VM Workstation hands off
installation / manual process

3) Log in and update to latest patches (sudo aptitude update ; sudo
aptitude upgrade)

4) Install scponly-full package (sudo aptitude install scponly-full)

5) Set package up:

cd /usr/share/doc/scponly-full/setup_chroot
sudo gunzip setup_chroot.sh.gz
sudo chmod +x setup_chroot.sh

6) Create chrooted scp user:

sudo ./setup_chroot.sh

and select default options (username = "scponly", path="/home/scponly",
incoming directory="incoming" ie just hit return each time)

set a password

7) Attempt to scp a file into the newly created chrooted scponly user's
incoming directory:

scp testfile scpo...@vmaddress:/incoming

receive this error:

$ scp testfile scpo...@192.168.0.238:/incoming
scpo...@192.168.0.238's password:
unknown user 1001
lost connection

The above steps work as expected on Karmic with the latest patches if
you build from the lucid source package:

sudo vi /etc/apt/sources

# Lucid sources for scponly-full
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid main restricted universe
multiverse

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get build-dep scponly-full
sudo apt-get -b source -t lucid scponly-full
sudo aptitude purge scponly
sudo rm -rf /usr/share/doc/scponly
sudo dpkg -i scponly-full_4.8-4_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow scponly-full
cd /usr/share/doc/scponly-full/setup_chroot
sudo gunzip setup_chroot.sh.gz
sudo chmod +x setup_chroot.sh
sudo ./setup_chroot.sh

Supporting Detail

Repeating step 7 whilst tailing /var/log/auth.log:

[Bug 236171] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon and Evolution cause 100% CPU usage

2008-06-02 Thread David Watson
I am including stack trace from my system, a Dell Latitude D630 with
dual core, 2GB RAM, and 120 GB disk. I am running evolution on hardy
against Microsoft Exchange. The 100% CPU occurs when composing a new
message. Simply click the new message button and the CPU spikes at 100%
and never returns to normal until evolution is closed. I don't have a
non-exchange connected evolution to test the exchange-only theory. I
only use evolution to solve the exchange client problem on linux.
Exchange-storage may also be implicated, as I saw it consuming
significant amounts of CPU along with the aforementioned gnome-keyring-
daemon and evoluation itself. This bug renders evolution effectively
useless when talking to exchange servers.

[Bug 149370] mythvideo can't find video files on local hard disk

2007-10-05 Thread David Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythvideo

I have gutsy with the latest updates as of Oct. 4, 2007. I have
mythvideo installed along with mythtv. I have had these installed since
my previous install of feisty which this machine (a dell poweredge) was
upgraded from. I have had various video files (avi, mpg, etc.) in
/var/lib/mythtv/videos and mythtv is configured to use that directory.
As of a recent update, mythvideo can't see any of these files and
reports "no videos found" when I select any of the following options:

browse videos
video list
video gallery
video manager

Thus, mythvideo is essentially dead in the water.

[Bug 141394] Re: gutsy: wireless non-functional after update

2007-09-20 Thread David Watson
I have a similar problem. I have an acer aspire 5570 2067. Wireless was
working fine with ndiswrapper on the atheros chipset on gutsy, but as of
the update this evening 9/20/2007, the wireless shows one orange bar
signal strength and refuses to connect when I know my WAP is working
fine.

I noted also that restricted driver manager shows atheros Hardware
Access Layer as enabled but with a red dot signifying "not in use". This
state is maintained even after disabling and re-enabling the driver and
rebooting.

[Bug 133259] Re: [FEISTY] firefox crashed

2007-08-19 Thread David Watson
Hilario,

I've tested this on a dell poweredge that I have (which ostensibly does
not have a synaptics touchpad) and indeed, the crash does not occur.
This suggests to me that your suspicions are correct with respect to the
synaptics being involved here. I'm also a bit suspicious about the sheer
size of the graphic embedded in that page when you scroll. BTW, if that
item has expired on ebay, follow any of the new items that look the
same, they all crash the same way.

[Bug 133259] Re: [FEISTY] firefox crashed

2007-08-19 Thread David Watson
Hi Hilario,

When this crash occurs, there's nothing written to /var/crash. I
followed the procedure in [1], but gdb spits a message that about 486
symbols and I suspect those are not correct for my athlon? Nevertheless,
I'm attaching the report so that you can see that I get no stack on "bt
full". Let me know if there's something I can do to get better
backtrace.

Thanks,
David

[Bug 133259] Firefox crashes on vertical scroll event

2007-08-17 Thread David Watson
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu Feisty with the latest updates on an emachines m5310
laptop, Athlon, 512MB, synaptics touchpad.

Firefox crashes when I access this page and try to scroll vertically by
holding down the left mouse button on the scrollbar and dragging on the
synaptics touch pad. It is easily reproducible and fails everytime in
the same way. Firefox just disappears from the screen with no crash
report, and there is nothing in /var/crash following the crash.

The page that causes the failure is here:

http://item.express.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ExpressItem&item=130141224199&FROM_MERCHANDISING=1&mode=0&placeid=5

I have reported this before, but it was closed due to lack of debug
information. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the old bug that I had
reported. Please let me know how to get debug information and I will try
to dig it up. Thanks.

Re: [Bug 116823] Re: firefox crashed

2007-05-27 Thread David Watson
Hilario,

I can reproduce the crash consistently, every time. The report in /var/crash
is indeed 36Kb. But a new report is not written when firefox crashes. In
fact, firefox just disappears from the screen on the vertical scroll down
event. I have the web developer extension installed. I guess I should try
those instructions that you referred to earlier.

Thanks,
David

Try to play an m4a file in mythtv/music. I know the proper codecs are
installed on my mythtv system because I can play the file successfully

it can't play. It would be great if it could play m4a just like banshee.
