As suggested there, running

[Bug 579941] Re: Networking disabled after a failed hibernate

2010-06-09 Thread DavorCubranic
** Summary changed:

- Upgrade removes eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces
+ Networking disabled after a failed hibernate

** Description changed:

I upgraded to KUbuntu Lucid by a clean install from the CD to the root
- partition, which worked fine for a couple of days. A couple of days ago,
- after a reboot I didn't have the network connection any more. After some
- troubleshooting, I realized that /etc/network/interfaces now contained
- only the loopback interface. The only explanation I have is that a
- package install or upgrade overwrote the file, because when I added
- "iface eth0 inet dhcp" line to it *and included it as an 'auto'
- interface), the network works fine again.
+ partition (keeping the home), which worked fine for a couple of days. A
+ couple of days ago, I had to reboot after a hibernate locked up, and I
+ didn't have the network connection any more.
+
+ The network card is detected fine (see lshw output below), and I can
+ turn on the networking manually if I add "iface eth0 inet dhcp" line to
+ /etc/interfaces. I'd rather handle it through the NetworkManager because
+ of better integration (Firefox, for instance, insists on starting
+ offline this way), but NM just does not want to manage the interface.

[Bug 588808] [NEW] Rogue root 'emacs23' process

2010-06-02 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs23

On my KUbuntu Lucid desktop, I occasionally see an emacs23 process run by the
root and taking up 30% CPU or more. Here is an example with top:

2031 root 30 10 32032 15m 4904 R 33.2 0.8 0:31.23 emacs23

According to a thread in the forum

2010-05-24 Thread DavorCubranic
It may be, Ludwin. More self tests pass in the report attached in

Hein's error in comment #7 is something else, though. It mention's MySql

more similar to the one I filed as bug #578357, where the Akonadi error
was just a symptom of an underlying problem with the database.

[Bug 579941] Re: Upgrade removes eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces

2010-05-24 Thread DavorCubranic
I read a bit about the current network interface management system and
compared my setup with another Lucid install where networking works
fine. Ashutosh, you're correct: my /etc/network/interfaces should not
contain a line about eth0, Network Manager should pick up the hardware
and activate it automatically. So why doesn't it? And, if 'ifup' and
/etc/network/interfaces is the old way of doing things, what is the
correct way?

Here is the output of lshw, when the computer is started without 'eth0'
in /etc/network/interfaces:

$ sudo lshw -c network
  *-network DISABLED
   description: Ethernet interface
product: NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
   vendor: Broadcom Corporation
   physical id: 0
   bus info: p...@:02:00.0
   logical name: eth0
   version: 11
   serial: 00:30:1b:b9:70:1c
   capacity: 1GB/s
   width: 64 bits
   clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm vpd msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet
physical tp 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd 1000bt 1000bt-fd autonegotiation

driverversion=3.102 duplex=half firmware=5789-v3.29a latency=0 link=yes
multicast=yes port=twisted pair
   resources: irq:18 memory:dfef-dfef

Why would it be disabled? After I explicitly activate eth0 with 'ifup',
'lshw network' does not show it as 'DISABLED' any more. What do I need
to do to boot up enabled?

[Bug 578357] Re: Akonadi startup error with no MySql

2010-05-19 Thread DavorCubranic
Deleting both ib_logfile0 and ib_logfile1 in
~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/, and then running 'akonadictl start'
fixed the problem for me. I don't know how the log file got corrupted,
but the system should be more robust than that. I mean, deleting a
(corrupted) log file does not need to be an unrecoverable error!

It's completely reasonable in such a situation to delete it and proceed
with startup. The database should still be in a consistent state, and
the worst that could happen is that the last few transactions are
missing. Or at the very least notify the user what the real problem is.
As it is, akonadi server's output is utterly unhelpful, and it took me
forever to find mysql.err, where the problem was actually clearly
identified.

[Bug 582070] [NEW] Konqueror prints debugging output to console

2010-05-17 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

While Konqueror runs, additional debugging output is printed from time to time,
such as:
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No such
file or directory
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /home/ubuntu/.config/ibus/bus
Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.
IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon

There is no reason why debugging output should be turned on in the
public release system. Furthermore, it makes it very difficult to use
the command line when there is so much garbage dumped on the screen when
an app is run from the console.

[Bug 579941] Re: Upgrade removes eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces

2010-05-17 Thread DavorCubranic
Ashutosh, why do you think anything was done through the Network
Connections GUI?

To be clear: I did a straightforward install from a KUbuntu Lucid CD,
formatting my root partition first. Other than picking my timezone and
partitions to format, I picked installer's defaults. The network
connection then worked fine for over a week, during which I updated the
installed packages at least once. Then a few days ago it stopped
working. While trying to fix the problem, I realized that
/etc/network/interfaces only contained the definition for loopback, and
restored my network access by adding eth0 to this file. I didn't try
fixing the problem via the GUI, because I didn't know about it. At any
rate, something caused my network configuration to be lost, wherever it
is defined by default -- in the GUI or /etc/network/interfaces.

[Bug 579941] [NEW] Upgrade removes eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces

2010-05-13 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to KUbuntu Lucid by a clean install from the CD to the root
partition, which worked fine for a couple of days. A couple of days ago,
after a reboot I didn't have the network connection any more. After some
troubleshooting, I realized that /etc/network/interfaces now contained
only the loopback interface. The only explanation I have is that a
package install or upgrade overwrote the file, because when I added
"iface eth0 inet dhcp" line to it *and included it as an 'auto'
interface), the network works fine again.

[Bug 578357] [NEW] Akonadi startup error with no MySql

2010-05-10 Thread DavorCubranic

[Bug 577240] [NEW] Konqueror doesn't draw drop-down menu contents

2010-05-07 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

Konqueror sometimes draws a blank dropdown menu for an HTML 'select'
element (see attached screenshot). The contents are still present in the
menu and can be clicked on to select them, but the menu is simply a gray
rectangle. Once Konqueror gets into this state, it seems like there is

[Bug 522919] [NEW] KPackageKit does not display any dependency information

2010-02-16 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

KPackageKit shows blank panes for 'Depends on' and 'Required by' tabs,
even though 'aptitude --show ess' from the command line lists several
required and suggested packages. The dependency information is shown for
some other packages that I tried.

[Bug 522013] Re: Konqueror forgets a custom shortcut

2010-02-14 Thread DavorCubranic
It looks like I've got a reproducible test case.

1. open a new Konqueror window, and change the search shortcut
2. close the window
3. open a new Konqueror window from the K menu or Alt-F2 -- the search shortcut
is as I customized it
4. close this (and all other) Konqueror windows
5. click on a hyperlink in a message in KMail
6. a new window opens with the search shortcut back to Ctrl-S

[Bug 522013] [NEW] Konqueror forgets a custom shortcut

2010-02-14 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

I customized Konqueror's shortcut for the search bar from 'Ctrl-S' to
'Ctrl-K'. It never stays for long, however, since opening a new window
will often (but not always) revert it back to the original Ctrl-S. Any
ideas what is causing Konqueror to lose the shortcut definition?

[Bug 521182] [NEW] Exiting KMail after deleting an account causes a crash

2010-02-12 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

KMail 1.12.2 on KUbuntu 9.10 Karmic

If I delete an (IMAP) account and then exit KMail, it invariably
crashes. I don't have debug libraries installed, but it should be easily
reproducible.

[Bug 521169] Re: Cannot configure mailbox folders

2010-02-12 Thread DavorCubranic
This is what I had to do to fix the problem:

1. Create the account, and in the 'advanced' tab of the account creation dialog
delete all the namespaces that were entered by the 'reload' button and enter my
own ('mail')
2. Exit KMail without expanding the new account in the folder tree
3. Open kderc in the editor and locate the entry for the new account
3. in the account section, delete the lines '1=', '2=', and 'Namespace='
4. change the 'Namespace:mail=' to 'Namespace:mail=/'
5. save kderc and start KMail
6. now only the mail folders appear in the folder list

It looks like the namespace dialog does not produce correct config
files.

[Bug 521169] [NEW] Cannot configure mailbox folders

2010-02-12 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

KMail 1.12.2 (KDE 4.3.2, KUbuntu 9.10 Karmic)

I created a new IMAP account, and KMail insists on showing every single
file and folder in my home directory. I set up namespaces in account
settings, clicked OK, and restarted KMail, nothign changes. I then
deleted the lines for those folders from kderc and the corresponding
files in .kde/shared/apps/imap, and started KMail again. The account
briefly showed only the Inbox, but then all the other folders came back.

I don't think the problem is in the mail server, because Mac OS's
Mail.app has no problems showing only the real folders.

[Bug 454406] Re: Konqueror is missing the search bar

2009-12-01 Thread DavorCubranic
I tracked the problem down to a single line
~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc: 'CurrentEngine=locate' in the
[SearchBar] section. When running from the command line, Konqueror would
print 'findServiceByDesktopPath: searchproviders/locate.desktop not
found' to STDERR. I removed the file and let Konqueror rebuild it, and
search bar has appeared in the toolbar again.

Sounds like a bug with handling 3.5 configuration files in post-4 KDE.

[Bug 456899] Re: LMSans17 is substituted for Monospace

2009-11-02 Thread DavorCubranic
This got worse in Karmic. Any font I try to set from the command line
(with the -fn option), results in Emacs trying to use a weird serif font
(see new screenshot). Choosing from the 'Options'->'Set default font'
dialog works fine.

[Bug 456899] [NEW] LMSans17 is substituted for Monospace

2009-10-20 Thread DavorCubranic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: defoma

KUbuntu 9.04 Jaunty (amd64)

Starting up XFT-aware Emacs (23.0.91.1, available in Jaunty as package
emacs-snapshot) with the default font set to Monospace-11 (either
through the -fn command line switch or .XResources), somehow substitutes
to font named LMSans17 at 11pt. (see attached screenshot) However, there
is no reason for font substitution, as Monospace is available on the
system.

[Bug 455152] Re: System tray and clock widgets should not expand beyond what's needed

2009-10-19 Thread DavorCubranic
It's a pretty superficial solution because, unlike in 3.5, the user
doesn't have the full width of the panel (minus the clock and tray in
the corner) to arrange the remaining icons as seen fit. Instead, he has
to manually fiddle with spacers whenever he wants to leave some room
between widgets.

Honestly, I don't see a single reason why clock and systray need to
auto-expand in width, but it sounds like I should file a bug with
kde.org and see their response.

Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty (amd64)

When remove the task manager widget from the starting panel, system
tray and clock widgets both expand to take up all available space. (see
attached image) In 3.5, they would remain sized at their optimum size
and let me put them in the right corner, leaving the rest of the panel
for arranging other widgets.

This bug is not a duplicate of bug #395301. The reporter in the latter

[Bug 202164] Re: [hardy] displayconfig-restore causes X to crash

2008-06-11 Thread DavorCubranic
I ran into an identical traceback on my machine after I installed
Kubuntu 64-bit Hardy. In my case, however, I made zero customizations to
the out-of-the box drivers or xorg.conf, and my sole graphics card is
the integrated X200 that comes with ATI's Xpress200 chipset.

Interestingly, there were no errors in xorg.log, only in kdm.log.
(Probably related to the fact that I was getting the login screen, but
after I logged in, the screen would go black for a few seconds and I
would be kicked back out to the login screen.) Failsafe login worked,
and once I disabled the executable bit on displayconfig-restore regular
login to the default KDE desktop started working too. (Except that my
wide-screen Dell monitor is not recognized and the "Monitor and Display"
module in the system settings cannot load.)
