[Bug 1262925] Re: xournal crash in iofclose.c when loading background.

2016-09-30 Thread Denis Auroux
This bug was fixed upstream in commit [c34acb] "Fix crash in ps/pdf bitmap
background import via ghostscript" on March 21, 2015.
https://sourceforge.net/p/xournal/code/ci/c34acb584baf71ef00086583b80d32f84e75bde0/

"Load background" for pdf's is a very poorly implemented feature and
should be removed soon from xournal or rewritten differently -- all it
does is convert the PDF to a medium-resolution PNG image to draw on top
of, rather than keep the pdf's contents. So I don't recommend ever
using it anyway, at least if you plan on exporting or printing your
annotations. Most likely, you'll obtain better results if you only ever
use "annotate PDF" in the file menu (or open a PDF, as you call it), and
use pdf manipulation tools (e.g. pdfseparate / pdfunite) to make the pdf
file you need before opening it in case you want to draw on top of
multiple PDFs in a single xournal document.

Anyway: the crash problem itself has been fixed for a while. Please ask
the Ubuntu maintainer to rebase the package on a more recent git/cvs
upstream version, or at least to incorporate the patch to src/xo-file.c
(or even simpler, change "rb" to "r" in the popen() call as reported on
bug #1275130. That and a tiny bit more is basically what the commit
listed above does).

[Bug 657783] Re: xorg 100% cpu while using xournal

2010-10-14 Thread Denis Auroux
I can reproduce the bug with your files on my system. I don't see
anything wrong with your files. Hence it's a real bug.

I believe this is caused by the pressure sensitivity option, which
causes the rendering to become much more complicated, and by issues in
the rendering libraries (libgnomecanvas and libart) used by xournal --
xournal is asking them to render several million antialiased polygonal
curves, each with its own width parameter, and they seem to become
completely overwhelmed and hog X resources in a way that's hard to
believe.

I hope that, if you stop using the pressure sensitivity option, you'll
be able to get much further (though things will eventually slow down
again as the volume of notes gets large). Due to the inefficiency of the
rendering libraries, until xournal gets completely rewritten for
performance you should probably have no more than 20-ish pages of
handwritten notes in your document, and even much less if using pressure
sensitivity.

If you e-mail me so I know how to reach you, I can send you a version of
Simmetrie.xoj with all the stroke width information removed, it loads
successfully and reasonably fast (still a bit slow, but hey it's 50
pages).

QUESTION: is this indeed a new bug for you, i.e. were you previously
able to work fine with this document and others of similar size with
variable-width strokes? If so, I'm assuming it must be an issue in
either the libraries or the X server, because absolutely nothing has
changed in xournal's rendering code in the last year or so.

[Bug 524963] Re: xournal needs the ability to customize keyboard shortcuts

2010-02-28 Thread Denis Auroux
To my knowledge, GTK+ does not provide a good standard mechanism for
making the user interface customizable (or didn't when I last looked).
On my distribution (Fedora 12 running Gnome) rhythmbox (version 0.12.6)
does not have the feature you suggest, or else I couldn't figure out how
to activate it (not a good sign).

Ctrl+P, Ctrl+E, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+V are already taken for more standard
purposes. I don't know what to assign to the tool shortcuts.

Perhaps the right thing to do would be to not have shortcuts for any of
the drawing tools except text, since after all those can't be used with
a keyboard? (Which other tools are useful enough to non-tablet users to
warrant an actual keyboard shortcut, and what shortcuts should they
have?)

I'm afraid this headed for another FFe then. It's partially Ubuntu's

[Bug 432388] Re: menu items do not react to mouse-clicks

2009-09-30 Thread Denis Auroux
The latest CVS version from sourceforge.net should fix these bugs. I'll
make an official release within a week or two. Hopefully the ubuntu
maintainers can update the package in ubuntu soon after that. In the
meantime, please test the CVS version if you have the time and know how
to compile from source.

Retrieve the code:
cvs -d:pserver:anonym...@xournal.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xournal login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonym...@xournal.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xournal co -P
xournal

Compile:
(make sure you have development packages for gtk2, libgnomecanvas and
poppler-glib installed)
./autogen.sh
make
try out the executable in src/xournal.

I'd be interested in reports on whether the CVS version works well for ubuntu
users.

[Bug 401371] Re: xournal tablet low resolution on first page

2009-09-30 Thread Denis Auroux
This is actually amazing -- I started noticing this bug myself after a
distribution update. It's an issue in libgnomecanvas (downgrading to old
versions of libgnomecanvas fixes the bug). I've reported it at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=596322 a few days ago (no
response yet).

Note that the slowdown only occurs if the vertical scrollbar is in its
topmost position (if you scroll just a little bit down the page it won't
happen anymore, at least on my system), and gets worse as you draw
closer to the bottom-right corner of the window.

[Bug 338017] Re: xournal does not save eraser options

2009-03-17 Thread Denis Auroux
Sorry about this annoying misfeature. Tools - Set as default only acts
on the currently selected tool, so you'd actually need to select the
eraser (e.g. by clicking on the eraser toolbar button) before doing Set
as default, otherwise it only saves the pen settings. Yes, this is
dumb. I'll have to rethink this whole set as default thing for a
future release.

In the meantime, it may be faster to manually edit ~/.xournal/config if
you find the set as default thing too confusing, which I would easily
understand.

[Bug 284530] Re: Writing in xournal lags or doesn't complete and selection boxes render incorrectly

2008-10-18 Thread Denis Auroux
This is actually a problem not with xournal, but with libgnomecanvas --
I'm assuming there was a faulty update to libgnomecanvas in Ubuntu. This
bug has first affected various versions of OpenSUSE, where it was first
evidenced, then fixed, then reappeared...

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425710

The immediate solution is to get the libgnomecanvas packagers for Ubuntu
to *not* include a patch called libgnomecanvas-no-tearing.diff, or to
include an updated patch that can be found attached to the latter of the
two bug-reports mentioned above.

Thanks,

[Bug 234240] Re: xournal text input fails in hardy

2008-05-28 Thread Denis Auroux
This issue probably only happens when you use the mouse (or
touchpad/trackpad) to click on a location where you want to type text
(but not if you use the tablet pen to select the location where you want
to type text), right?

If so: upgrade to xournal version 0.4.2.1 to fix the issue (which is
actually a bug in the X server causing invalid events to be generated,
but the newer xournal includes a workaround), or upgrade the X server
(if the issue has been fixed in newer versions?), or, temporarily,
uncheck the Enable XInput button in the Options menu (the price to pay
being a loss of quality when you use the stylus to write on the screen).

(Not sure if it fixes the memory consumption problem reported by bmhm on

It would also be good to package 0.4.2.1 if possible (if too late for Hardy,

[Bug 137934] Re: Please sponsor xournal 0.4.0.1

2007-09-14 Thread Denis Auroux
As the upstream developer for the software being discussed, let me say
that I'm completely astonished to hear that Gutsy is supposed to be in
upstream version freeze.

Gutsy seems to include unstable versions of various libraries (chiefly,
GTK+ 2.11), as well as recent releases of utilities whose behavior is
not backwards compatible with the standard versions (e.g., pdftoppm).
This exposes a very large number of problems in existing software, which
often requires significant upstream fixes -- at the last minute, because
until a few weeks ago GTK+ 2.11 had virtually no user base.

Now, I don't actually care which version of Xournal makes it into Gutsy,
since I'm a Fedora user, but my feeling is that Gutsy is still pretty
much broken at this point. And I'd like to mention that more than half
of the time I can spare to spend on development these days is currently
spent on diagnosing and working around oddities in the unstable or even
undocumented versions of libraries and base packages in Gutsy.

Anyway, whatever.
