If we want to stop Compiz being turned on by default we need to make some
noise. I see no sign that Canonical is watching this thread with interest.

Regarding my comment above: I'm not sure that the repackaged Xorg had
anything to do with the strange behaviour I was seeing, and all is
running fine again. Oh except, that it's still broken, as we all know.

2007-09-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Okay, so installing xserver-xorg-core-dbg was dumb. Now I've tried
xserver-xorg-core and I'm in real trouble. It lost the screen resolution
and keymap setting (dk). I reinstalled the original xserver-xorg-core
package and put X11's backup (xorg.conf.broken) back in place as
xorg.conf. I still have a resolution of 640xsomething and a broken
keymap. Can someone help me re run the original config script to make my
desktop usable again? Attached is my current xorf.conf file.

[Bug 120733] Re: Rotation options should not be in a submenu

2007-09-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
I just want to say that I support this RFE. I use this feature often and
don't understand why the extra submenu is needed. Rather than ask
should we move it just because there's space the developers could have
asked earlier should we move it to a submenu, we have space to leave it
in 'Image'.

[Bug 139963] [gThumb] need a progress bar for long processes

2007-09-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

After I reported bug #138311 I've had a change of heart and think we
should solve a usability issue before I can follow up on that other bug
(it turns out partial files were in fact created, but I didn't realise
gThumb was still working, I thought it had hung.)

So, now my RFE is for a progress bar for longer processes, with a cancel
button of course.

I think an application like gThumb will be used more and more to make
PDFs with large groups of images as people discover gnome's PDF printer.
This will often create very long processes and users need to see what's
happening so they don't kill the app thinking it's hung.

2007-09-12 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Dave: I think you're the only person getting this message for region

bridge :00:1something. So maybe the Express 54 slot is some thing

m4z: you're the only person who has reported that your machine doesn't

[Bug 139224] install hangs at configuring hardware, ruins GRUB

2007-09-12 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Gutsy Daily live CD 12 Sept

Installer hangs on 120%(!) while doing 'configuring hardware'. No HDD
activity.

No unusual setup, and it messed up GRUB which I thought was odd. GRUB
complained about Error 12 (Invalid Device Requested) which was odd
because it was installed on MBR so should have been able to find the
windows and Ubuntu Feisty installs OK.

I have full access to the partition I was trying to install to, but none
of the logs say anything interesting.

The last three lines of scrollkeeper.log are:
Sep 12 22:34:34 scrollkeeper-update: Registering
/usr/share/omf/gnome-netstatus/gnome-netstatus-zh_HK.omf
Sep 12 22:34:34 scrollkeeper-update: Registering

Sep 12 22:34:34 scrollkeeper-update: Registering
/usr/share/omf/gcalctool/gcalctool-zh_HK.omf

The last three lines of dpkg.log are:
2007-09-12 06:53:44 status installed initramfs-tools 0.85eubuntu19
2007-09-12 06:53:44 status half-configured libc6 2.6.1-1ubuntu4
2007-09-12 06:53:45 status installed libc6 2.6.1-1ubuntu4

The last three lines of bootstrap.log are:
Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...

lastlog and faillog can't be opened, dmesg.log and boot.log are
empty like everything else.

(I've installed GAG to recover my system)

[Bug 138311] Re: can't print large multiple selection to printer 'PDF'

2007-09-10 Thread Duncan Lithgow
gthumb version 2.10.6 in Gutsy.

This bug might just be a case of the file being too big for something in
the workflow to handle. It's created from a directory of 147 images
which gives a 318MB PDF. I know that's large, but so what - it should
just take longer, or tell me what's wrong - right?

[Bug 138279] selecting 'include filename' adds files full path

2007-09-08 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

In gthumb 2.10.6 (and earlier) if I select all and then go into 'Edit
Print' I have the option to 'include filename' but if I select this
option I instead get the image file's full path (which in my case is
very long and takes up a fair bit of space).

In order for GNU/Linux to make effective use of vfat partitions, which
are a critical componant of boot environments shared with windows,

[Bug 134454] [gutsy] nautilus icon view is unpredictable

2007-08-24 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.10 and still I can't work out how to make
the icon view work on demand.

Sometimes it just works.

Sometimes it works if I just go into nautilus 'Edit Preferences
Preview' and set 'Only for files smaller than' to something higher. But
sometimes that doesn't seem to work.

Always I get the icons if I open the directory with gThumb, but that
should not be needed.

So I don't know what's wrong/weak but something isn't working.

[Bug 132081] Re: [feisty] Evolution: migration-assistant migrates mail accounts but nothing else

  Binary package hint: migration-assistant

fresh install of feisty on same hard disk as debian sid, the user
migration happens but just mail accounts are transfered from sid
evolution (2.10.3-1) to feisty evolution (2.10.1-0ubuntu2). no mail
messages, mail filters for local account, contacts or calendars.

at debian's evolution i have a local and a remote calendar, also local
contacts and ldap addressbook, a few email filters for my local account.

i guess this one goes to wishlist. it would be nice to have a full
replica of my debian's evolution here in ubuntu.

[Bug 134041] Sound-Juicer to issue system sound

2007-08-22 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

This should be set as 'wishlist'.
I would like Sound-Juicer to have an option for issuing a system sound when a
CD is finished ripping. Often I rip a lot of CD's in one go when I'm not using
the computer for anything else so this system bell would tell me to walk back
to the machine and throw the next CD in.

Of course I have constructed many set-ups so that the opening of the CD
tray hits something to make a noise, and if you don't implement this RFE
I will post pictures of these strange construction! (joke)

[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation

2007-08-20 Thread Duncan Lithgow
h3: the message you are getting: no nvidia card found is not what this
bug report is about. You need to look for or make another bug report.
This bug report is about the message Desktop effects could not be be
enabled which you should never see in Gutsy as it seems to have been
removed.

[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation

2007-08-20 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Assuming this is not going to be fixed in Feisty, shall we just mark it
a duplicate of bug #89697 which is more relevant to Gutsy now that the
restricted driver installer system seems to be working well?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: desktop-effects

- I couldn't find a list of supported graphic cards for compiz anywhere -
- but for the record it doesn't work with my GeForce Go 7400. It just
- thinks for a while and then says Desktop effects could not be be
- enabled
+ Description updated Aug 20th '07

- I understand (now) that it only works with the nvidia-glx driver.
- desktop-effects should check for the presence of supported drivers and
- if it's missing it should display some text, perhaps: Desktop effects
- does not support the graphics driver you have installed. To enable
- desktop effects you will need to install one of the drivers listed at
- http://blah.com;
+ = Running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) =
+ If Desktop Effects fails it gives the message Desktop effects could not be
be enabled
+
+ For users of nVidia Graphics Cards this can be because the machine needs
+ the binary driver from nVidia which is not installed by default (nvidia-
+ glx). But the message doesn't mention any of this so the user doesn't
+ know what to do.
+
+ = Running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) =
+ In 7.10 the system offers to install the nVidia binary driver and if this
works will enable Desktop Effects. But it doesn't let you know how well your
graphics card is supported. This problem is explained in bug #89697

[Bug 133609] 'Desktop Effects' fail with nVidia GeForce Go 7400

2007-08-20 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Is this the correct package? I have not installed any extra windows
management packages, just the default 'Desktop Effects'.

Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) with nVidia GeForce Go 7400

If I enable 'Normal Effects' everything seems to be fine with nvidia-glx
enabled. The desktop 'blinks' and everything works fine.
If I then enable 'Extra Effects it still looks fine and works great (no crashes
yet).

But when I reboot the machine while 'Normal Effects' is enabled, the desktop
comes up with no windows borders. To get the borders back I have to switch to '
No Effects'. From there I can go through the whole process again.

To me this looks like my card is supported but something is not being
loaded during boot-up?

[Bug 133290] [gutsy regression] ipw3945 wireless not activated

2007-08-18 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Kernel: 2.6.22-9-generic

This has just happened with the latest updates (August 18th). It may
just come back, so I'm not going to play with it for now. I've seen
before that if I boot into Feisty and have it running there and then
boot back into Gutsy it works - but that's hardly a fix.

[Bug 133290] Re: [gutsy regression] ipw3945 wireless not activated

2007-08-18 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Sorry, it just came back after installing nvidia-glx

It looks like I need to turn it on at a quite specific moment during the
boot for it to be seen and configured. By chance something threw the
bootup back to text mode and I noticed the kill switch on line so
quickly pressed the kill switch to turn it off. The contents of the
original description of course includes me checking each thing twice
pressing the button in between tries.
