I checked this issue again. However, I failed to reach the same result. In windows the sidebar is getting shorter as the firefox window smaller. But in Ubuntu 8.10 the width of the sidebar is fixed regardless of the size of firefox window size. I found the reason. This occurred when I connected the both of D-BUS and DVI cable to monitor. XV works with D-BUS and doesn't work with DVI. I don't know this situation is meant to be or not. When playing video using xvideo, I can see only black screen. Totem or mplayer does not print any failure messages but just show black screen. I verified it using gstreamer-properties.
