[Bug 1906173] [NEW] Screen blank when waking from suspend, have to move mouse to make login screen appear

2020-11-29 Thread Finn Bear
Public bug reported:

This is basically the same symptom, but from many years ago:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1431128

To reproduce:
1) Suspend (I do so via the dropdown menu)
2) Turn off display. (Not sure if relevant)
3) Turn on display. (Not sure if relevant, problem occurs even if this step is
after #4)
4) Wake from suspend (I do so by pressing a key on the keyboard OR the power
button)
5) Screen either stays black or flickers for a second and then goes black
6) Press any key on the keyboard
7) Login screen appears (as if it was in screen-saver/lock mode before)

I'm guessing the bug is not very reproducible because you would have
noticed it already. However, I should note that (aside from a few days
after I installed the OS) the problem happens 100% of the times I wake
from sleep

Some unique details about my setup:
1) The default 20.04 installation failed to a bug installing the packaged
Nvidia drivers, but skipping that and doing it after installation worked in all
respects that I can see
2) My computer is custom, not OEM.
3) I do have VMWare Workstation installed
4) I used to use 18.04 and 19.10, neither had the issue

[Bug 1854892] [NEW] Opening external drive in disks shows wrong disk

2019-12-02 Thread Finn Bear
Public bug reported:

When I navigate to the directory of my "Data" internal drive, right
click, choose properties, and click "open in disks," the disk
application opens to the wrong disk (the first one in the list, my nvme
boot ssd). Additionally, I don't see the drive in the side bar (like
18.04).

If I had tried to do this with a flash drive I was planning to reformat,
I might have accidentally formatted my boot drive.

Yeah, my pleasure. I updated a server with your packages yesterday and
have been testing since, including having a loop run overnight. I've
yet to see it get stuck in the sched_yield() loop. So far everything

We have the following packages installed that match the ones you updated
so I will just be installing your updates to these:

[dfinn@ps-backup-db05 PS SERVER 0 ~]$ dpkg -l|grep -i ruby2
ii libruby2.3:amd64 2.3.1-2~16.04.12
amd64Libraries necessary to run Ruby 2.3
ii ruby2.3 2.3.1-2~16.04.12
amd64Interpreter of object-oriented scripting language Ruby
ii ruby2.3-dev:amd64 2.3.1-2~16.04.12
amd64Header files for compiling extension modules for the Ruby 2.3

I was able to get it to happen twice in somewhere around 100 tries so
this isn't a great test but I'm going to update one system and
continually run it on there.

OK, I'm playing with that ruby script mentioned above now. I've run it
several times across several servers and it's only crashed one, leaving
a hung process using 100% CPU. I'm trying to get a feel for how often
it does this before I patch a test system.

[Bug 1834072] [NEW] Puppet agent using 100% CPU, in sched_yield() loop. Looks like an issue with ruby2.3 which has been fixed but not yet made it into Ubuntu.

2019-06-24 Thread DAN FINN
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 16.04
ruby 2.3.1-2~16.04.12
kernel 4.4.0-148-generic

We've noticed an issue across multiple servers where puppet agent will
seem to get stuck and consume 100% CPU for days or weeks on end until
manually killed.

root@ps-prod-jenkins-qa-ui02:~# ps aux|grep -i puppe[t]
root 1412 0.0 0.2 143716 38680 ?Ssl Jun11 0:39 /usr/bin/ruby

root 128479 54.8 0.3 286744 53596 ?Rs 10:30 250:17 puppet agent:

Strace shows it in a sched_yield() loop:

root@ps-prod-jenkins-qa-ui02:~# strace -p 34884 -c

^Cstrace: Process 34884 detached

-- --- --- - -
100.000.002130123189 total

Some googling shows this is a common issue which was supposedly
fixed/backported to ruby 2.3:

https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PA-1743
https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/13794
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=876377

The following open Ubuntu bugs look to be having the same issue and
suggest that this fix made it into Debian but never made it into Ubuntu:

file be detected as Targa at a higher priority, thus taking precedence
over being what it actually is. See the below lines as examples using
clips from http://hubblesource.stsci.edu/sources/video/clips/ as
examples:

$ file -k /home/piratefinn/Downloads/hst_2.mpg
/home/piratefinn/Downloads/hst_2.mpg: Targa image data - Map 63635 x 65536 x 1
+268 +60928 - 11-bit alpha - top - right - four way interleave MPEG sequence,
v2, program multiplex (Lepton 3.x), scale 0-0, spot sensor temperature
0.00, unit celsius, color scheme 0, calibration: offset 0.00, slope
0.00\012- data

Note that this appears to only affect MPEG-2 (and possibly higher) as
MPEG-1 is detected corretly.

$ file -k /home/piratefinn/Downloads/hst_1.mpg
/home/piratefinn/Downloads/hst_1.mpg: MPEG sequence, v1, progressive Y'CbCr
4:2:0 video, 320x240, 4:3, 29.97 fps (Lepton 2.x), scale 1-2, spot sensor
temperature 0.00, unit celsius, color scheme 0, show spot sensor, show
scale bar, maximum point enabled, calibration: offset 586.228088, slope
-411899156202779801569722368.00\012- data
file -k /home/piratefinn/Downloads/hst_1.mpg

This appears to not be an issue in 1:5.25 used in 16.04, however looking
through the github it appears since then in possible 5.26 (or above)
changes as seen in
https://github.com/file/file/commit/aee048a020badb5f36008f6d11e7d5b32834bcb2
affected this.

[Bug 1591476] [NEW] Desktop vs. home directory

2016-06-11 Thread finn
Public bug reported:

On the desktop there is the entry "open terminal" in the context menu,
but I expected "open terminal here". Therefore the terminal will be
opened with the home directory as its working directory. For me this
behavior seems to be utterly illogical. I would rather like it to be
opened with the desktop directory as its working directory.

If someone wants the home directory, there are already
some options:
* add a terminal starter to the starters bar
* use CTRL+ALT+t
* open the file manager (home), then "open terminal here"
* Dash "ter"

Ubuntu 16.04 (after upgrading from 14.04)

suggests downloading the 3 libnl-* on another machine and with a USB-

And the problem with that is that VLC requires libebml4 to work, or update or
some thing for me so I don't know what to do.
sudo apt-get install -f comes up with the same error, only when I have VLC
installed though, as with it uninstalled the dependency on libebml4 is not
there and so no broken package.

[Bug 1111329] [NEW] ccsm crashed with SIGSEGV

2013-01-31 Thread Finn Årup Nielsen
Public bug reported:

1) Start ccsm
2) Press composite
3) Disable Enable Composite
4) Segmentation fault.

bug 1041523 mentions /usr/lib/compizconfig/backends/libkconfig4.so
However I get reported:

$ ls /usr/lib/compizconfig/backends
libgconf.so libini.so

As far as I can determine it is not the same as bug 872976. Furthermore,
I do not see g_main_context_prepare as in bug 126308.

[Bug 1100308] Re: gnome-control-center segment error during selection of image

2013-01-17 Thread Finn Årup Nielsen

[Bug 1100308] Re: gnome-control-center segment error during selection of image

2013-01-17 Thread Finn Årup Nielsen
This issue is reproducible and seems to be related to the user number. I
had a user number in the /etc/passwd set to 300 and something. Now
changing that to 1000 and with appropriate sudo chown -R myusername
/home/myusername and sudo chgrp -R myusername /home/myusername I no
longer get the error: the username is shown in lightdm, the username is
shown in the upper right corner, I see my self in the User account is
system settings, and pressing the icon does not generate a crash, but
selects the icon alright.

Before that I tried minimum-uid=300 in /etc/lightdm/users.conf but I
did not get that to work.

There seems to be multiple issues (including a crash) related to a too
low user number.

[Bug 1045196] [NEW] Thunderbird menu item Move To under Message missing items

2012-09-03 Thread Finn Årup Nielsen
Public bug reported:

Just security upgrading Thunderbird (related to
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1551-1/) I no longer see the folders as
menu items in the Move To and Copy To menu items in the Message
menu item. :-(

I have see them before. I still see the folder pane on the left side and
with the mouse I am able to move emails from the inbox to the folders in
the folder pane. The menu items were convenient when moving emails with
keyboard-only interfacing.

[Bug 957449] [NEW] clockdiff fails if its pid is over 65535

2012-03-16 Thread Finn Gangstad
Public bug reported:

Clockdiff calls getpid() to get a unique id and stores it into an int
named id. This id is then stored into a 16 bit field in packets it
sends out, and when it receives replies it compares the received id with
the int id to determine if the packet should be discarded or not.

If getpid() returns a pid higher than 65535, all packets are discarded.

I fixed it with a patch like this:

diff --git a/clockdiff.c b/clockdiff.c

I had previously created a new kernel. I suspect that the existence of

[Bug 671789] Re: Shotwell rotates images incorrectly

2011-07-09 Thread Finn
I can reproduce this bug:

Have shotwell open and a potrait picture with orientation tag in the EXIF data
in your library. Now edit the picture with jhead:
jhead -autorot pic.jpg (This will rotate the image according to the
orientation tag.)
Shotwell now displays the image as in the screenshot.

Restarting shotwell solves the problem.

[Bug 524437] Re: missing status icon

2011-04-26 Thread finn
Same here on my Thinkpad T400 running Ubuntu Maverick. After startup it shows
up but then it disappears after little time. If Bluetooth is turned on over the
Fn key combination it comes back but as the key also switches the wlan module
it always produces a wlan disconnect.
Any Suggestions? Is there a Option to control this behaviour?

[Bug 669076] Re: When my system tries to boot into the NEW install

2010-12-25 Thread George H Finn
I do not see a classification of solved or I would have changed it to
that. I still consider what I went through, a bug in the program, and I
will try to explain why. Final determination: The install package does
not correctly setup the hard drive, even when making the selection to
use the entire drive. I cannot begin to tell you how many attempts at
installing I went through; but tracing the history of this bug report
will give an indication of how long it has taken me. If I had recorded
yesterdays event I could at least accurately describe in the
documentation to new users, which I am one, how to manually go through
the steps of 'prepping' the hard drive. The clue was in the boot process
when it continually displayed Please append a correct 'root=' option
and made comment to there not being a legit file system. So yesterday,
the big eve, I had Ubuntu check my drive for errors, it took the entire
day. I then formatted the drive and chose a '/' as the mount point. I
have no idea if that is the correct choice, there is no help provided in
that area as to what to chose and the difference in the choices. Long
story short, it is installed and I am recording these comments from
within Ubuntu. So it was the hard drive setup that caused all my
problems.

Is there a layman's description to dealing with this issue, such as not
having to do some coding and recompiling to get this system installed?

2010-12-06 Thread Finn Årup Nielsen
Thanks, I see that it is not really a bug.

 import sys
 i, o, e = sys.stdin, sys.stdout, sys.stderr
 reload(sys)
 print(1)
 sys.stdout = o
 print(2)

I will change the status.

Re: [Bug 669076] Re: When my system tries to boot into the NEW install

2010-12-04 Thread George H Finn
No, I just gave up trying to install the system. I do not have the knowledge
to figure out what is wrong with the generic install options to be of any
help. The system runs fine from the cd; but will not boot into the system
after what appears to be a good install. I'm not sure if the pictures of
most of the screens during the failed boot are still out there with the
posting or not. I have been wanting to leave the MS arena for some time; but
can't get linux installed where I can use it.

Thanks

This was changed from 'Incomplete' to 'New' since all the requested

the start of the list of bugs (I think it is the same bug repeating) and
another that shows the end of the list just before the screen goes into
total darkness. Please forgive the emails that include the one being
replied to. I am new to this and will try to adhere to some site

Re: [Bug 669076] Re: When my system tries to boot into the NEW install

2010-10-31 Thread George H Finn
Wow, couldn't believe someone already replied to me. Thanks. First off, do
they keep a list of submissions via email addresses? I submitted the onset
of this with the msg not sure its a bug about a day ago. That was done
while running from the cd and it grabbed my system info with the
submittal.(doesn't seem to be a word)

I am trying to load ubuntu on this system so I can FLEE the windows
environment, not having much luck so I end up having to reinsert my windows
drive back into its slot to continue. I will open this email from the
running of ubuntu from the cd and see if I can get my system info again.

Thanks

 Hi George,
OK, that shouldn't happen. We do need more information however to help.
Can you add details here of what machine exactly you are using (model,
amount of memory etc). If you can get a screenshot of the bug messages
(e.g. with a digital camera) you could also attach that.

If you can boot the same machine into 10.04 then please run

 apport-collect 669076

which should add a load of information about your machine to this bug.

[Bug 669076] Re: When my system tries to boot into the NEW install

2010-10-31 Thread George H Finn
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

During the boot load process, I see repeatedly BUG : Bad Page map in process
khelper with pte: #'s pmd : hex code following it. The system then hangs.
The system I am trying to install on a bare drive is 10.10, I tried the 32
bit and the AMD 64 bit versions, neither works.
It is the 32bit version I get the BUG echo with - the 64 bit version just
hangs
The operating system runs fine from the cd, too bad I cant just image that to
my hard drive.

  thanks

Re: [Bug 669076] Re: When my system tries to boot into the NEW install

2010-10-31 Thread George H Finn
I ran apport-collect 669076 while booted into the cd, I mounted the hard
drive that the install is on in hopes of getting someone with remote access
to maybe look at the install and see if there is something obvious that
non-users know nothing about.

Thanks

 Hi George,
OK, that shouldn't happen.

The numbers start low and climb until they hit 511.something and then after
awhile the screen goes black and freezes.
