[Bug 889885] Re: empty window in import filters

2018-11-15 Thread Frederik Elwert
For me, Thunderbird 60.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.04 now displays a message saying
that not applications were found from which data could be imported. That
seems to be sensible behaviour. So I guess the bug has been fixed then?

[Bug 1703638] Re: [snap] symlink ~/.fonts by default to $SNAP_USER_DATA

I think there’s a second issue: Now the LibreOffice snap does see the
fonts installed in ~/.fonts, but it does not see system fonts installed
in /usr/share/fonts (e.g., as a deb package). Should I open another bug
for that issue?

[Bug 1790608] [NEW] [snap] Libreoffice does not open files from thunderbird (more general: from /tmp)

2018-09-04 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

I received a document via e-mail in Thunderbird. I have the Libreoffice
snap package installed. When I want to open the document from
Thunderbird, I see the Libreoffice splash screen, and then a dialog
stating "/tmp/mozilla_0/.docx does not exist."

The same dialog appears when I navigate to the folder in Files and want
to open it.

When I copy the file to my desktop, however, I can open it without
problems.

I guess the source of the issue is confinement, that the Libreoffice
snap can only access files from $HOME. But this breaks the case where
thunderbird creates a temporary copy in /tmp.

[Bug 1785851] [NEW] [snap] "Send → E-Mail" opens email message with subject but no attachment

2018-08-07 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When I choose one of the "Send → E-Mail Document" options, an email
message (thunderbird) opens with the correct subject, but no attachment.

Correct behaviour would be to have the document attached to the message.

I assume this is a result of confinement and not sharing /tmp.

[Bug 1618314] Re: unity won't start

2016-11-27 Thread Frederik Elwert
Re #10: This is probably a graphics driver related issue. If it works
after a while, I guess one can live with it. In other cases, the
symptoms are the same as described here (starting Unity fails, goes back
to login screen), but the fixes suggested here don’t work. In that case,
uninstalling the proprietary nvidia drivers and using nouveau instead
seems to help.

# 2012 Pawel Stolowski
# 2012 Mark Tully

Now in the current version, /usr/share/unity-
scopes/texdoc/unity_texdoc_daemon.py only contains this copyright
header:

# Copyright(C) 2013 Mark Tully

While the new implementation has changed in many ways, some pieces of my
code are still in the current version (especially title extraction). I
am quite surprised to see the corresponding copyright information
removed.

[Bug 1247196] [NEW] TeXdoc scope does not open results

2013-11-01 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

The TeXdoc scope finds and lists results, and displays them with an icon
(depending on the file type) and the file name. But when one clicks on a
result, only the file name and the icon (in large) are shown, but no
actions/buttons to open the file. This makes it impossible to actually
access the result items.

[Bug 1247033] [NEW] Pandoc hangs with --bibliography option

2013-11-01 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When calling pandoc with the "--bibliography" option, it hangs (i.e., it
runs forever and does not produce output).

This issue was present in earlier pandoc packages in Ubuntu, but could
then be fixed by installing additional packages on which the
bibliography feature depends (see
http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/faqs.html#pandoc-hangs-when-i-try-to-
use---bibliography). In 13.10, it hangs despite these packages being
installed.

When installing pandoc through Haskell’s own package manager (cabal), it
works fine. So I guess that this is again a packaging issue and pandoc
does not find some required files for citation processing.

[Bug 1195483] Re: Installation, Live and Check disc do not start on Asus ZenBook Prime UX31A

2013-10-13 Thread Frederik Elwert
There is another bug report regarding the saucy black screen issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1237843

Since this bug is marked as affecting saucy and raring, I guess that it
covers two separate issues: The SecureBoot issue that also affects
raring, and the black screen issue that only affects saucy.

Given the current state of discussion, should the other bug be marked as
a duplicate, or should it be marked as affecting saucy?

Anyways, this issue will severely affect anyone with a UX31A when
upgrading to saucy. So if it is not fixed until the release, this should
probably go into the release notes?

[Bug 1237843] Re: Black screen on primary display on linux 3.11.x Asus UX31a

2013-10-12 Thread Frederik Elwert
I experienced the same bug after an upgrade from raring to saucy with
the same model. I just tested the upstream kernel, but the same bug
seems to exist there. I added the corresponding tag.

I can work around the issue by booting into the raring kernel
(3.8.0-31), which was still installed after the upgrade.

[Bug 919899] Re: There is no sequence for c-acute

2013-07-08 Thread Frederik Elwert
I just discovered a work-around that is easier than setting an
environment variable (GTK_IM_MODULE), but effectively does the same: In
the text field where you want to type, e.g. gedit, right-click and
select “Input Methods → X Input Method” from the context menu.

So this behavior seems to stem from the default input method, IBus. This
might explain why editing the files under /usr/share/X11 had no effect.
So maybe this bug is not affecting console-setup, but IBus instead? Or
does anyone know where the pre-configured IBus input method gets its
mappings from?

[Bug 1191693] [NEW] After pasting a link, cursor in compose entry box jumps to the end of the text after every keystroke

2013-06-17 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

After pasting a link into the “compose” entry box, when trying to add
text before the link, the cursor jumps to the end of the text after
every keytroke. Thus, only one character is inserted at the desired
position, while the rest is appended at the end.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Click on “Post”.
2. Add some text into the “Compose” box.
3. Paste a link, which will be shortened automatically.
4. Move the cursor in front of the link.
5. Type some text.

What I expected:

The text I type should be inserted at the cursor position between my
original text and the link.

What happens:

The first character I typed is inserted at the correct position, then
the cursor jumps to the end of the entry, after the link, and all
following keystrokes get appended at the end of the entry.

[Bug 1189382] [NEW] Misleading icons for “Keyboard” and “Keyboard Layout” in Control Center

2013-06-10 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

Control Center has two settings panels for keyboard related settings:
“Keyboard” and “Keyboard Layout”. The icons used for these panels are
misleading, as they suggest exact the opposite content:

- The “Keyboard Layout” icon depicts tree keys, two of which are connected by
an orange line. This suggest something like “keyboard shortcuts”, where you
combine two or more keys to trigger certain actions. But shortcuts are part of
the “Keyboard” panel.
- The “Keyboard” icon depicts a whole computer keyboard. This suggests that one
can configure the keyboard as a whole, i.e. its layout.

Thus, I would suggest switching the icons used for these panels.

P.S.: One could also question the categories these settings belong to:
Personally, I would expect the keyboard layout to define the “Hardware” aspect
of the keyboard, while keyboard shortcuts are more of a “Personal” setting.
P.P.S.: A related, but different bug is #883256 which suggests merging these
categories altogether.

[Bug 1175144] [NEW] nautilus-sendto does not quote e-mail display names

2013-05-01 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When sending a file using nautilus-sendto and e-mail (evolution), one
can type an e-mail address directly in the nautilus-sendto dialog. This
entry also supports completion using the local address book. When
choosing an e-mail address from the completion box with a display name
that contains a comma, this display name is not quoted.

As a consequence, the newly created e-mail contains an invalid e-mail
address.

E.g., when selecting

Doe, John

it should be quoted as

"Doe, John"

Otherwise, Evolution shows an error message when trying to send that
e-mail.

2013-04-15 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1168457] [NEW] Character limit does not respect selected services

2013-04-12 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When posting new messages, the character limit does not take the active
services into account. E.g., when having twitter disabled and only
posting to facebook, the limit of 140 characters is still applied.

Gwibber had the same bug, it is bug #522986. But in Friends this is
somehow more severe, as Gwibber allowed to post over-length entries, so
one could ignore the 140 limit for facebook-only posts. In Friends, one
cannot post entries that exceed the limit.

[Bug 1152606] Re: SideKick / ErrorListPlugin version mismatch

2013-03-11 Thread Frederik Elwert
I guess the issue is that ErrorList 2.0 and above require jedit 5.0 or
greater, while Ubuntu ships 5.0pre1. However, SideKick should not be
updated to a version requiring an ErrorList version that is not
installable. So the issue seems to be partly on jedit’s side (not smart
enough plugin depedency resolution during plugin updates), and partly on
Ubuntu’s side (shipping a pre-version).

Installing the 5.0 deb package from jedit.org fixes this issue.

For me, it helped to delete the account and re-add it in the

existing data should be handled with care. But maybe it helps.

[Bug 1102067] [NEW] Webapps do not launch when Opera is the default browser

2013-01-20 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

I am using Opera as my default browser. To use the webapps, I installed
two of them (facebook and launchpad) via Firefox. However, if I try to
launch these apps from the dash, noting happens.

When I set Firefox as my default browser in the system settings, I can
launch the webapps.

I assume that the unity-webapps-runner looks for the default browser,
since webapps are meant to work in either Chromium or Firefox. This
leads to issues when none of these two is the default browser. Maybe
there should be a fallback, so that Firefox is used when neither
Chromium nor Firefox are set as default.

[Bug 354245] Re: rubber crashed with OSError in getmtime()

2013-01-04 Thread Frederik Elwert
I am not exactly sure if it is the same bug that I stumbled upon: The
effects were the same, but I thought it was caused by spaces in the file
path.

However, attached is a patch (against 1.1-2.4ubuntu1 from Ubuntu 12.04)
that quotes the environment variables. The same thing had been done for
filenames earlier, but I experienced this issue with the TEXINPUT
environment variable, which rubber sets to the directory of the main
file.

[Bug 782953] Re: Software Center doesn't detect changes in sources until update-apt-xapian-index is ran by cron

2012-10-13 Thread Frederik Elwert
I think a related, but slightly different issue in 11.10 and 12.04 is
Bug #863463. It seems that in newer versions, the Software Center does
not actually update the package information (apt-get update), but if one
does that manually, it finds new packages without manually calling

Um, seems I was wrong. According to compose.dir, en_US.UTF-8/Compose is
responsible for the de_DE.UTF-8 locale. In that file, cacute seems to be
defined correctly, at least I cannot find the issue. Fixing the
iso8859-15 compose file does not fix the issue in an UTF-8 environment.

So where is the faulty definition? Don’t manage to track it down …

[Bug 1016259] [NEW] dead_acute + c produces ç

2012-06-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

I am using the default German keyboard layout in a de_DE.UTF8
environment. When typing the key sequence ´ + c ( ), I am
getting ç (ccedilla), but I would expect ć (cacute).

The cause seems to be in /usr/share/X11/locale/iso8859-15/Compose, which
has these lines:

# Useful for portuguese language
 : "\307"Ccedilla
 : "\347"ccedilla

I don’t know why we should have a special case for this: We can have
ccedilla already with , and currently there is no way
to get cacute. It is really counterintuitive to use the acute on a c and
get a c with cedilla.

[Bug 1000182] [NEW] indicator-datetime shows all-day events one day too early

2012-05-16 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

In the event list, indicator-datetime shows all-day events one day too
early. In the calendar view, however, the correct days are marked as
having events (bold).

When selecting a bold date with an all-day event, the event does not
show in the list. When selecting the previous day, the event shows in
the list, but with the wrong date (one day too early).

The attached screenshot shows this.

[Bug 985809] Re: Compiz scale/exposé flicker on first activation

2012-05-11 Thread Frederik Elwert
The issue is still there. But if I am not mistaken, it’s behaviour has
changed a bit: It does not appear on the initial viewport, but only
after you switch to another viewport and trigger scale there.

I also experienced this on a second machine with an Nvidia graphics
card, so it seems not to be driver specific.

[Bug 872044] Re: Bluetooth 'Send files' returns permission denied error

2012-05-04 Thread Frederik Elwert
For me, sending files over bluetooth (both directions) also failed
despite the fix. I had to remove the saved pairing from my phone and
then re-pair my PC and phone. Peter, you might want to try that, maybe
it helps.

So it looks like the N9 camera simply does not store thumbnail data into
the images? Are those always expected or should there be a fallback
thumbnailer for images with missing EXIF thumbnails?

[Bug 986676] [NEW] Shotwell does not show thumbnails for images on "Mass Storage Camera"

2012-04-21 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When I want to import photos from my N9, which is detected as "Mass
Storage Camera", no image thumbnails are shown. Instead, a blurry "Image
missing" icon is used. However, I can import images. Not having
thumbnails just makes the selection of specific images next to
impossible.

When using Nautilus, accessing these images with thumbnails is no
problem.

[Bug 985809] [NEW] Compiz scale/exposé flicker on first activation

2012-04-19 Thread Frederik Elwert
Public bug reported:

When triggering scale or exposé (Super+W/S) for the first time after
login, there is a lot of flickering and then the windows/workspaces are
only partly shown. The view is generally unusable then. But when
activating them again, they both work fine. So it seems to be some sort
of instantiation issue.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

[Bug 980234] Re: Gourmet package does not use vector icon

2012-04-14 Thread Frederik Elwert
I am sorry, overlooked that: They seem to have added it lately, so it is
not in the version that is in Precise. You can find it in their current
trunk: http://grecipe-manager.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p
=grecipe-manager/grecipe-
manager;a=tree;f=images;h=52f565e1125db1fac6e944acbc5e57713c88e60f;hb=HEAD

In Unity 3D, 48x48 is not enough. The launcher uses 48x48 (or something
like that), but the dash seems to use larger icons, and the task
switcher definitely uses really huge icons. The switcher might be the
most visible difference to Unity 2D.

2012-04-09 Thread Frederik Elwert
I also experienced this, and I can confirm the fix from #7 works
(thanks, Konstantine).

So if this is invalid as a python bug, maybe it is a virtualenv bug?
Maybe there should be some upgrade automatism, or at least an upgrade
hint? Or are virtualenvs supposed to break on upgrades?

The issue with libevdocument3.so.3 seems to be caused by a newer version
of that library being available in Precise:

$ dpkg -S libevdocument
libevince3-3: /usr/lib/libevdocument3.so.4
libevince3-3: /usr/lib/libevdocument3.so.4.0.0

I don’t know if gnome-documents just has do be rebuilt or something, but
currently it is unusable.
