2015-06-23 Thread GaryParr
Ah, it seems I miss-read the BIOS issue that was going on with this
model and then made a faulty assumption. Apparently the problem was not
the A05 version in particular, but the flashing process in general. See

[Bug 1464757] Re: Audio broken on Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140

2015-06-13 Thread GaryParr
Christopher, I haven't contacted Dell yet for a few reasons. The primary
being that I'm not quite sure I understand what to tell them. From what
I gather on the most likely related bug (1413446) the original issue was
how the BIOS presented the sound card. But... I can't tell from the
dmesg results if this is the same thing. It looks similar, but also
different.

Also, I know Dell released an A05 BIOS for this model (I'm A04) but then
pulled the BIOS after it caused problems. Because of this, and because
Dell doesn't officially support Linux on this model, I wanted to have
some idea of what to tell/ask them before I raised the issue.

[Bug 1103594] Re: Cypress Trackpad wrongly (?) detected as "PS/2 Cypress Trackpad" ("evdev *pointer* catchall") on XPS 12

2013-04-17 Thread GaryParr
I have the Sputnik PPA and last time I checked I had the Kamal kernel.
Because of this however, I just discovered I need to pay more attention
to my updates. Anyway, I'm showing the CyPS/2 trackpad with the gemeric
kernel, so I'm not sure if this confirms or denies anything.

[Bug 792251] Re: krdc vnc becomes extremely slow after a few seconds

2012-06-29 Thread GaryParr
Wanted to say I screwed up and miss-read the topic. I'm not connecting
using VNC. I'm connecting to an XP instance using RDP. That said
however, the symptoms are exactly the same as described in the original
bug report. This may mean we are dealing with two different issues,
however identical symptoms indicate they are the same underlying problem
bubbling up into two different protocols. I am able to use Remmina for
an RDP connection without experiencing this bug, so the problem seems
isolated to krdc.

[Bug 792251] Re: krdc vnc becomes extremely slow after a few seconds

2012-06-16 Thread GaryParr
I see the same behaviour in Kubuntu 12.04 after switching over from
Ubuntu 11.04 in an attempt to get away from Unity. The only additional
information I can provide is that my session appears to work fine until
I launch IE on the remote machine. At this point, the only workable
solution is to disconnect the session, re-connect and immediately close
IE. After that, the session is fine again. There may be other
applications that cause this behavior but I have not stumbled upon any
yet.

[Bug 574815] Re: clock 2.30.0 on ubuntu 10.04 amd64 does not update; times on locations do.

2010-09-03 Thread GaryParr
This has to be related to other bugs... just not sure which one. If you
search for "frozen clock" you will get a few hits.

I have this same issue on 10.04, 64 bit, but can add a little more
information. Everything in the indicator applet seems to "hang"
visually at the same time, but still works fine otherwise. The clock
will get stuck (meaning the time/date does not change) but a left-click
will bring up the calendar correctly. The account status icon will not
change (available/away/etc) however you can left-click and see that the
correct status is selected. Volume indicator is the same... you can
change the volume level but the indicator will not reflect the change.
I believe the network status indicator is included in that list, but can
not swear to it.

For me, this seems to happen randomly. Sometimes at boot and sometimes
after logging out/in. Sometimes after I've been in a session for days.

What seems to "un-stick" the display is anything forcing a re-draw of
the applet. Changing from 12 to 24 hour time will do it. Changing
themes will do it. Etc.

I do have three items in the indicator applet that never seem to be
affected by this... DavMail, Skype and the message indicator (the one
with chat, evolution, etc). These three items continue working correctly
when everything else does not. I can only assume the difference is the
manner in which these elements are re-drawn. Or perhaps the way they
are notified that they have to be redrawn? FWIW I have a Thunderbird
add-on that updates the message indicator so I may be seeing different
behavior here than someone without that add-on.

Changing a user ID or group ID from the Users and Groups administration

1) Create a new user
2) Complain that you can't pick a UID while creating that user
3) Select the newly created user and click Advanced Settings

[Bug 453966] Re: dell xps m1330 regression, integrated digital microphone no longer working [karmic koala]

2009-12-02 Thread GaryParr
@Daniel T Chen

This is what happens when you have 5 different bug reports open trying
to track down the one most relevant... you sometimes post incomplete
information in the wrong thread.

However, since I'm here I would like to add that I installed linux-
backports-modules-alsa-karmix-generic in my first attempt to get my
external mix working on my clean install last month. This did enable the
external mic but disabled the internal one. It was only after removing
the backport module that I discovered the trick of switching the digital
input. So, perhaps I posted in the wrong place but the symptoms are the
same/similar so make of it what you will.

2009-12-02 Thread GaryParr
Same issue with precision M4400. The internal mic worked on a clean
9.10 install but external mic would not. The only way to get the
external mic working is to run alsamixer and change the digital input to
analog. To revert to the internal mic I have to run alsamixer and set
the digital input to digital mic.

[Bug 342324] Re: [jaunty][alpha6]X-Server restart randomly

2009-06-05 Thread GaryParr
I recently spent some time "tinkering" with Compiz and Emerald and I
haven't had the problem since. I have no idea what really changed since
I ended up back where I started with both Compiz and Emerald enabled and
the same set of Compiz options.

Don't you just love a consistent problem?

I would say that I was going to "tinker" again and see if I could try to
zero in on some sort of cause for this issue, but to be honest... I
think I'd much prefer having a stable system for a little while :-)

[Bug 342324] Re: [jaunty][alpha6]X-Server restart randomly

2009-05-11 Thread GaryParr
No AccelMethod in my xorg.conf file and yet I get the random
gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error.

Running 32 bit Jaunty release on an IBM R60 with ATI X1400 and open
source driver. Using Emerald and Compiz. Have experienced this when
starting VirtualBox guests, when opening a NetBeans project, and when
just surfing the web on FireFox. There does not seem to be a common
thread that ties them all together.

Did not have this issue on Hardy with proprietary ATI driver. Did I
have other issues then? Yes, but nothing that killed my X session and
caused me to lose data in running apps.

So, what's the "Fix" that was "Commited" on this bug? Did I miss
something in the above posts?

[Bug 32389] Re: [upstream] nvidia-glx doesn't restore state on NV35/NV36 cards. Causes random mess on screen or system hang.

2008-06-11 Thread GaryParr
No change for me with a fresh Hardy install. Same ugly mess.

2008-02-08 Thread GaryParr
I finally got Gutsy stable... I think Hardy can wait a while. I did
install the 169.09 nvidia drivers in Gutsy though and no change. Laptop
LCD shows random noise during logout and shutdown as well as in a
virtual console while an externally attached LCD is fine.

2007-12-19 Thread GaryParr
I'm not sure how these bugs are tracked, but this is assigned to
restricted module 2.6.17. Can this be re-assigned/attached to version
2.6.22.x since it is still happening? Also the nvidia-new 100.14.23
drivers have not resolved the issue.

2007-11-14 Thread GaryParr
Additional tidbit of information. A display connected through a docking
station works fine with the "nvidia" driver but fails miserably when
using the "nv" driver. When the laptop display gets the noise on
shutdown, the external display does not and will show the splash screen
(or shutdown scripts if splash is disabled) correctly. I no next to
nothing about hardware and this may or may not be of any benefit but I
thought I'd throw it out there.

2007-11-13 Thread GaryParr
Problem exists on gutsy with GeForce Go 6200 and 100.14.19 glx-new
drivers. Removing usplash did not help. Neither did changing vga boot
settings. Only option seems to be to remove the nvidia drivers.

[Bug 84566] Re: package: lm-sensor / sensord not working on i2c-i801 (VAIO VGN FE 11 S/H/M)

2007-07-18 Thread GaryParr
I have a Sony Vaio VGN running Feisty Fawn. My sensors-detect is exactly
the same as the original post with the exact same "no sensors" result
after following the how-to found at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2780
