Looking at apport-bug --help shows that there is a severe discrepancy
between what man apport-cli shows and what apport-bug will accept.

[Bug 1071930] Re: apport-bug options not mentioned in manpage synopsis

2020-03-08 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Nothing has changed up to Ubuntu 19.10 - the man pages seem to have not been
touched since 2009.
I confirm that there is a very inconspicuous mention of `man apport-cli(1)`
though.

I still have no idea what this was about - apport decided to report it.
So I am perfectly fine with leaving it to rot (unless someone else steps

[Bug 1590125] Re: Middle mouse (wheel-click) button stopped working after upgrade to 16.04

2016-06-15 Thread Guntbert Reiter
blush :-/

After not finding a kernel where it worked I finally tried on another
computer, running Windows - and it didn't work either.

So it looks like a hardware issue that possibly occured at about the
same time as the update.

Sorry to have wasted your time.

The last Ubuntu release where it worked was 15.10 .
But I am not certain if it stopped working immediately after the upgrade - it
took me some time to realize it was not only me not pressing the button
properly :-)

Christopher, thanks for doing that research for me. I upgraded the BIOS
(easy enough :-))

No improvement - the middle button is still not recognized at all.

The requested output (no idea if the "invalid entry length" lines are
important)

3707
Invalid entry length (16). Fixed up to 11.

[Bug 1581088] Re: Middle mouse (wheel-click) button stopped working after upgrade to 16.04

2016-06-05 Thread Guntbert Reiter
I don't want to hijack a bug report (see my test at #22), but I strongly
believe that this should not be offloaded to "a buggy BIOS".

I am experiencing the same behaviour on quite a different system, it is
(obviously?) a regression since it worked (on the same system) under 15.10 and
previous versions. I agree that my BIOS is rather old but the notion "well, bad
luck, you will have to buy a new motherboard to be able to use your mouse like
before" gives me the creeps. I hope I am overreacting :-)
For completeness, my BIOS-Version

Tested with 4.6.0-040600rc7-generic from the archive mentioned above.

No success: xev still only shows buttons 1 and 3, but not button 2 (the
scroll-wheel (buttons 4, 5) is registered too).

[Bug 1395310] [NEW] UI quirk in "other software" tab

2014-11-22 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Public bug reported:

When (in the "other software" tab) the window is scrolled down all the
way (see attached screenshot) and I activate/deactivate a ppa the UI
suddenly jumps and the affected line is much further down in the window
(see next screenshot). Thus the mouse pointer is now above a different
entry.

Steps to reproduce:

in software-properties/other software
* scroll all the way down
* click on the checkbox of one entry approximately in the middle of the window
* all lines will "suddenly" jump down, leaving you with the mouse pointer on a
completely different entry

oops .. I was wrong

The indicator-applet from the ppa is displayed once I have started it
manually. Then the setting "autostart on" takes and the applet stays
visible across reboots (with persistence :-)).

[Bug 1310566] Re: indicator-multiload is not displayed

2014-07-04 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Just tried it again (on a completely different system) - the indicator
is not displayed. I had troubles adding the ppa

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:~indicator-multiload/stable
Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:~indicator-multiload/stable'.
Did you mean 'ppa:indicator-multiload/stable' ?

In the end I used ppa:indicator-multiload/stable-daily.

The result is the same: indicator-mutliload is not displayed.

current version: indicator-multiload:
  Installed: 0.4-0+84~33~22~ubuntu14.04.1

sorry that I have no better news.

[Bug 1322711] [NEW] "Description" in "Technical description" doesn't show package name

2014-05-23 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Public bug reported:

The "description" in "technical description" seems to take its value
from the package's description only. Not all packages include the
package-name there.

So it is not immediately obvious how to see which package will be updated. (The
"changes" tab shows it in a very inconspicuous
way in the first line)

I suggest to include the package name as first line in the description
field.

[Bug 993499] Re: possibly arbitrary use of the tag "Candidate for deletion"

2013-06-10 Thread Guntbert Reiter
I haven't checked them against those referenced at the current "index page for
all encrypted disk and filesystem guides"
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystems, but at least the last
one (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedRootonDapperUsingLUKS) is
referenced there under "Current ubuntu release, item 3".
So I suggest they need checking but the "candidate for deletion" status is
definitely wrong and should be removed.

[Bug 1090567] [NEW] https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/installation-guide/ needs editing

2012-12-14 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Public bug reported:

1) the URL says 12.10/installation-guide/
2) the top line says: Ubuntu 12.04 > Ubuntu Installation Guide
3)the headline says: Installing Ubuntu 12.10 from the Alternate CD (while
there isn't an alternate CD for 12.10)
4) the three links lead to 12.04 docs

It looks like there has been a (too) quick updating by only replacing
"12.04" with "12.10" automatically (but only partially)

But on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades#See_Also there

[Bug 1071788] [NEW] ubuntu-bug doesn't honor -w when called via gksudo

2012-10-26 Thread Guntbert Reiter
Public bug reported:

When calling ubuntu-bug -w it shows a dialog ("After closing this message
please click on an application window to report a problem about it.") and
expects you to click on some window to determine the process/package against
which the bug should be reported.
During a running upgrade I tried that and got: "that window doesn't belong to
you" (correct, it was owned by root :-))
Calling gksudo ubuntu-bug -w results in the standard dialog ("what kind of
problem do you want to report?") instead of the one initiated by the -w.

Steps to replicate:
1) call ubuntu-bug --- see the standard dialog
2) call ubuntu-bug -w --- see the "click" dialog
3) call gksudo ubuntu-bug -w --- see the standard dialog
