[Bug 1270844] Re: Marvell 88SE9485 SAS/SATA 6Gb/s controller patch

2014-11-25 Thread HansHook
I have a related issue.

There is also a 88SE9485 controller on the
ASUS P9A-I/C2550/SAS/4L (Intel Avoton) Server Motherboard also.

lspci ->

01:00.0 RAID bus controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9485 SAS/SATA
6Gb/s controller (rev c3)
02:00.0 RAID bus controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9485 SAS/SATA
6Gb/s controller (rev c3)

In kernel 3.13.0-40-generic moduel mvsas is not loaded.
Also if mvsas is loded with modprobe -v mvsas no disks are identified by the
system.
(Applying the patch above makes no difference.)

Is this a new bug report?

[Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

2013-03-22 Thread HansHook
Hi,

I can also verify that the nomachine "free" NX server is not crashing
KDE with the proposed repo enabled in 12.04.

Unfortunately the FreeNX server from the ppa:freenx-team/ppa does not.

[Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

2013-03-11 Thread HansHook
Dave:

I do not know the answer to your question.
What I did do was (as agenkin) install the libxrandr2 packages from Raring.

# dpkg -l | grep libxra
ii libxrandr-dev 2:1.4.0-1ubuntu1
X11 RandR extension library (development headers)
ii libxrandr2 2:1.4.0-1ubuntu1
X11 RandR extension library
ii libxrandr2:i3862:1.4.0-1ubuntu1

X11 RandR extension library (debug package)
ii libxrandr2-dbg:i3862:1.4.0-1ubuntu1
X11 RandR extension library (debug package)

This (unfortuanately) does not prevent freeNX from freenx-team PPA ftom
crashing with KDE.

How do I apply the patch you are referring to?

Timo:

# apt-cache policy libxrandr2

I am a bit confused here
test _without_ the backport stack ...

What am I missing out on?
How do I get the fixed libs into my 64bit Ubuntu 12.04?

It seems I am *very* close to getting this working and since NX has been one of
my best friends
and I've been using it since before Ubuntu 6.06 ... without any major issues, I
am indeed grateful
for any help!

2013-03-06 Thread HansHook
Unfortunately still unable to make NX server work with kde in 12.04 :-(

I have tired the libxrandr2 packages from Ringtale without success.

What would probably work is to find the correct spot for adding:
-extension XFIXES
to nx scripts since X2go works quite well.

Has anyone been able to successfully add '-extension XFIXES' to nx
scripts and in that case where and how?

[Bug 1024313] Re: More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze

2012-08-01 Thread HansHook
I can now confirm that reverting to the old NFS v3 on the client
resolves the freezing issues.

Still this does not allow us to upgrade 10.04 to 12.04 since in practice
v4 is needed.

I sure hope we receive some attention to this bug. NFS is a cornerstone in
Linux/UNIX and
has been for ages.

[Bug 1024313] Re: More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze

2012-07-17 Thread HansHook
I can also confirm the substantial extra waiting time when bootwait is added -
which is needed for a
home directory.

Also anyone, that likes to go the nfs v3 way, may save some time not making my
mistake
In /etc/fstab an nfs3 mount needs the '/export' prefix on the mounts

For example with nfs v4:
1.2.3.4:/share/mountpointnfs4 bootwait,nfsvers=4 0 0
In order to use nfs v3 change it to:
1.2.3.4:/export/share/mountpointnfs bootwait,nfsvers=3 0 0

I have not yet been able to test how my setup performes with v3 though.

[Bug 1024313] Re: More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze

2012-07-16 Thread HansHook
I have also found the infromation that NFSV3 does work.
However I do not really like the word "fixed".
We have been using V4 since around 2009 (with 8.04 and 10.04) for a reason.
NFS3 does not allow for an elaborate use of groups, and does not support acls
either I belive.

It is like if ext3 and 4 was brooken using ext2 would not be an
acceptable solution.

I can only agree that this bug actually makes 12.04 clients unusable in a
corporate environment
including NFS.

I sincerly hope the community does not find that acceptable.

[Bug 1024313] [NEW] More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze

2012-07-13 Thread HansHook
Public bug reported:

Setup:

2 similar company sites with one server and 5-10 clients.
Bug is preventing uppgrade of well working 10.04 system to 12.04
Problem is becoming a real big issue since it is at the heart of company IT
infrastructure.

Server:
Ubuntu 10.04 server amd64 running kernels 2.6.35-32-server or 3.0.0-22-server.
Not tested with standard/original kernel.
Servers have a 6TB raid array and exports home and archive directories to
clients and virtual servers using nfsv4.
Services running on server: OpenLDAP, NFS, SAMBA, NTP, DHCP, DNS and KVM (with
about 12 guests).

Clients:
Several Ubuntu 10.04.4 clients with kernels 3.0.0-22 in the process of
uppgrading (currently dual booting) to 12.04 (and in one case 11.10).
All clients authenticates via LDAP and mounts home directories usig nfsv4
(static fstab mounts - no automounter).

Setup with any number of 10.04 client and maximum of one 11.10 or 12.04
client is working perfectly - thus we passed initial 12.04 evaluation
with flying collors..

Bug description:
When booting two or more 12.04 or 11.10 clients all 12.04 (or 11.10) clients
will freeze at login of any two (random) users.
This will often occurr instantly but at times after a short delay.
All 10.04 clients work well all the time - they are mounting the same shares
but are not affected.
Somtimes reboot from console is possibel on a frozen client but most often hard
reset (poweroff on the button) is required.
After turing off the second 12.04 client the first one will be accesible again.

As long as therie is only a single 11.10 or 12.04 client booted it will
works as well as any 10.04...

Have tried with tcp or udp, sync or async and all kinds of frame sizes etc - no
change.
Have replaced NICs to intel...
Kubuntuo or Ubuntu does not matter
Found nothing usefull (!!?) in the logs this far...

Network performance is very good with about 90 MB/s read/write speeds on
nfs directories.

(Only previous unsolved problem noted on 10.04 clients are bzr repos on
nfs that will cause a freeze.)

System seup is tradional and has been working for some 8 years and goes back
before Ubuntu...
(Still have some 8.04 clients that works exceptionally fine.)

The funny thing is that we use kernel 3.0.0 on our 10.04 clients - same as the
11.10 client that is affected.
Does this suggests it might not be a kernel issue after all?

We will provide any assistance we are able to that is needed in order to
solve this issue.

Hans Höök

[Bug 275451] Re: nfs mounts specified in fstab is not mounted on boot.

2011-04-16 Thread HansHook
Thanks MxxCon - your suggestion would have been much simpler.

Unfortunately it did not work for us.

We are not experiencing this problem so often on servers, only on
clients (about 9 out of 12 client boxes).

On servers we use static IP:s on clients we use DHCP.
Changing a client to a static IP did fix the NFS upstart problem!!!
When we investigated that clue we turned a lot of stones (even replacing our
managed switches with dumb once) but we could not find a problem related
to DHCP in our setup.

Most of our clients are clones - therefore it is amazing that the problem is
consistent
on one box and not on another.
If it is a timing problem related to how fast the hardware is it might make
sense though.
(We have tried with flushing all DHCP leases records in order to rule out
"unlucky" NIC)

On a private (MPD) server I have also had this problem,
In such cases, when there are services depending on NFS shares being mounted
the
upstart script emits the event 'nfsshares-mounted',
This saves the day - allowing me to wait with starting these depending services.

[Bug 275451] Re: nfs mounts specified in fstab is not mounted on boot.

2011-04-15 Thread HansHook
A FIX for the problem
=

We have also noticed that for some hosts, more often with multiple cpu
cores in our experience, NFS shares are not mounted in time during
upstart.

We have tried NFS v3 and v4 with Ubuntu 8.04 servers and Ubuntu 10.04
clients.

If /home is an NFS share this will cause a lot of trouble since a login without
a home catalog will result in a locked up gnome session that requires sudo
rights and some command line skills to resolve.
(Not the kind of situation you would like your users to find themselves in...)

It is a shame that this problem still persists – we have suffered from
its consequences since 10.04 was released and not been able to find its
root cause. To help others in the same condition we have decided to
publish our fix – even thought it is quite ugly it works and removes the
symptoms.

(Most likely the problem is related to DHCP assigned network interfaces
not being up when mountall expects them to. This will cause a time out
condition that is only resolved after a considerable amount of time and
sometimes not at all, I.e the NFS shares remain unmounted when the user
logs in.)

The following fix will provide peace of mind and happy users:

1. In /etc/fstab make sure all NFS mounts have the flag “noauto” set like:
10.0.0.250:/home/homenfs4 noauto 0 0

2. Add the attached upstart script /etc/init/nfs-upstart-fixer.
If you use NFS v4, that uses idmapd, uncomment:
'start on (net-device-up and started idmapd)
'
If you use NFS v3, that does not depend on idmapd, uncomment:
'start on (net-device-up)
'

3. Add the attached script /sbin/ensure-nfsshares-mounted.

4. Above will take care of most situations but if you are using gdm and are
quick when logging in there is still a chance that the home share may not be
mounted.
To be sure add the following line to the script /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default:
/sbin/ensure-nfsshares-mounted

This will act as a guard.
(Read instructions in /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.sample if ther is no
/etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default
in your system.)

Note 1:
The “magic” time constant of 8 seconds /etc/init/nfs-upstart-fixer is empiric.
It works on all hosts I have seen this far. If it is too small there will be a
time out condition which will cause the time between entering password and
until the login is completed by quite a long time.
If this happens try with 10, 12, 14 until this does not happen.

Note 2:
For non gdm users there is probably a “hook” corresponding to
/etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.

Note 3.
If you have NFS shares in /etc/fstab that are truly intended to be “noauto” the
above solution will
have to be modified a bit.

Hope you may now also enjoy swift boot up and NFS mounted home shares in
Ubuntu even though this embarrassing bug remains unfixed!

Best regards
