[Bug 1056488] Re: Messaging menu title icons are indistinct
Attached is an updated set of icons. 1. They increase contrast between the chat status color and the envelope colors. 2. They add slight spacing around the chat status to make the shapes clearer. Two other bug fixes will also improve the appearance: 3. By mistake, the previous icons were too small and a bit blurry. David Calle fixed that yesterday. 4. The Available icon appears by default even when you're offline. Ken VanDine will fix that soon, so that by default you get just the envelope. Bug 1046360 I propose that we look into these icons in more detail for 13.04 and will file and target a bug. ** Attachment added: messaging-menu-icons.zip https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-mono/+bug/1056488/+attachment/3365465/+files/messaging-menu-icons.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1056488 Title: Messaging menu title icons are indistinct To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-mono/+bug/1056488/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1060301] [NEW] Messaging menu title icons are suboptimal
Public bug reported: 1) Using 7px emblems on an already small icon needs to be reconsidered. 2) Using a single icon to indicate new messages vs chat status is a challenge. We would like to explore an icon set which is more functional in terms of communicating, and better adheres to the intended aesthetic. A couple of early ideas: - make use of the mono status icons that were used in the 10.04 (and 10.10?) Me Menu. - Experiment with bigger emblems to create a clearer overlap. Factors to consider: - accessbility shape vs colour - size - consistency between the title icons and the standalone status icons - visual style and theme of Ubuntu ** Affects: ubuntu-mono (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Matthieu James (tiheum) Status: New ** Changed in: ubuntu-mono (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Matthieu James (tiheum) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1060301 Title: Messaging menu title icons are suboptimal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-mono/+bug/1060301/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 344839] Re: Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful
This is a bug in two parts. First is the fact that the drive couldn't mount which is a technical issue of some description. Second is the error message itself which is unhelpful. I appreciate that it isn't always possible to suggest what a user might do to rectify the problem but it is necessary in order to provide a good experience even when things go wrong. As it currently stands the offline equivalent is this: I am sitting on a train on my way from Brighton to London. The announcer apologises that train has encountered a problem and is canceled. I am left standing on a platform trying to find out how to get to work. A better experience is this. I am sitting on a train on my way from Brighton to London. The announcer apologises that the train is being canceled and suggests that I go to Platform X to catch and alternative train. I am still late, but I am not standing on a platform clueless as to what to do next. ** Tags added: ux-errormessage -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344839 Title: Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 729531] Re: Button-style tabs do not fit with rest of the system and are unituitive
Thank you very much for the feedback raised in this bug report. The bug will be postponed for review in the next cycle and we will combine it with the results of the usability testing we have scheduled for April (and further rounds beyond that) in order to help inform the next phase of design. As you may have noticed, the Ubuntu One product has been undergoing quite a number of changes and many improvements to support it delivering on its potential and we have been working closely with the Ubuntu One team to work towards delivering their vision for the whole product experience. The design decision on the treatment of the tabs stands. Its future inclusion or otherwise in a toolkit remains unclear, only once we are confident that this has reached a point at which standardisation is an appropriate next step will we move to propose changes at a toolkit level. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/729531 Title: Button-style tabs do not fit with rest of the system and are unituitive -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 706899] Re: Define messages and images when info is not available
I propose that this be marked as won't fix. In the next release we should re-examine what the toolbar area is used for also, once one starts exploring this particular problem there are actually a few different layers to it. For example, in *My Folder* there is space that is indeed available to me but in any folder that is shared with me one might argue that the space is merely unused! [Bug 628087] Re: Maverick ubiquity lacks option to change computer name
The specification for the installer that was used at UDS can be found here: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfkkjjcj_101gnkrpg5v The spec describes the first Objective of the installer as: Make installation process quick with an engaging hand-off to the desktop. It goes on to describe the Problem Definition as: The Ubuntu Live CD is the first experience many new users will have of Ubuntu. The installation experience should be attractive and effortless to reassure new users that Ubuntu is the right choice. The process should feel safe and should only highlight risk when necessary (e.g. when data will be destroyed). The document goes on to list 3 types of user to consider: 1. Users with no prior knowledge of Ubuntu or understanding of the nature of an operating system 2. Users who already know they want to install Ubuntu 3. Expert Ubuntu users who have very specific configuration requirements In this context we can discuss this bug in 2 ways: a) Is the design intent the right choice for us? b) Given that the design intent has been agreed through an accepted process what do we do about the use-case presented? I propose that a discussion around a) should be left for UDS (or similar decision making forum) as design intent is often a complex decision inviting technical, user and strategic goals to be represented and cannot be adequately explored in this forum. Design intent is not a bug. Which brings us to the use-case represented. Looking at the design of the installer, it is very much geared around this new user of Ubuntu. Welcome, Where are you? , About you; the slideshow elements are all things that You can do. If we add another field (and I do like Randall's wording) we would have to add another step on the 'About you' page? In fact, it could be argued that the name of my computer doesn't belong on a page About Me in which case we would be adding complete extra page. This might not be a big deal but our intent has been described as creating an Quick, Attractive and Effortless install and I believe that we owe it to ourselves to fight the urge to add steps. Do we want to do that? Providing an auto-generated bit of the name (as per Mark's suggestion) would just add an element of uniqueness that might be helpful if, let's say, someone installed an Ubuntu box somewhere where there were lots of Ubuntu machines and then they could share music and see how lovely it is to be part of ubuntu-land, it would also mean that if you were installing Ubuntu on a lot of machines you wouldn't end up with any repeated names on your network. Now to the fact that there is no way to change the name of the machine. If that is a use-case we need to support, let's design and make the best way to do that. -- Maverick ubiquity lacks option to change computer name https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/628087 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

On the downloads page there is a delay before the music starts downloading. The current implementation gives the user no indication that something is happening and because it takes about a minute to start actually downloading the user can be forgiven for thinking that something is broken. Suggested solution would be to replace the grey progress bars with the word 'queued' and adding an animation.
