[Bug 843373] Re: Dash button on a Launcher. How to return it back to top panel?
Omer: Ok, I guess by "discoverable", you mean an interface that could be totally used without any help whatsoever. If so, firstly this does *not* stop you from adding an option for the Natty way. Secondly, a much better approach to this discoverability problem, is to include a demonstration welcome tutorial in help, and have a shortcut to this on the desktop of the LiveCD and fresh installs / new accounts. The welcome demo should include some speech talking the user around the major parts of the system, but should not include any video due to CD/download size constraints. Instead of video, the welcome demo should highlight, activate or animate parts of the interface it wants to draw attention to. This solves the discoverability problem you talk about, and would mean that you don't have to trash the interface by trying to make it totally self-documenting (if you can call it that). ** Changed in: ayatana-design Status: Invalid => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/843373 Title: Dash button on a Launcher. [Bug 849482] Re: Instant launcher reveal from top-left corner doesn't work in oneiric
Omer: Keyword is 'instant'. The Launcher does not instantly reveal in Precise like it did in Natty. [Bug 849482] Re: Instant launcher reveal from top-left corner doesn't work in oneiric
On Precise (I've been playing around with a LiveCD), setting reveal location to top left corner and setting reveal sensitivity to highest, is almost like in Natty but it is nowhere near as responsive. It requires pushing into the corner for a split-second, _then_ it starts the slide-in animation. If the mouse is in pixel (0,0) it doesn't do anything; it actually requires a push which doesn't seem to work for me over VNC. In Natty, the animation (I use fade only in CCSM) happens as the mouse moves across the Dash Home button, making it as responsive as the user wants. The faster the mouse moves, the quicker the animation. It just makes so much sense, and it has a nice feel as it kind of 'clicks' into the corner. Natty also worked fine over VNC and was also usable on a touchscreen such as a SmartBoard or the Wacom screen on my ThinkPad X60 Tablet due to the Dash Home button on the panel/menubar. Having a good look round the LiveCD, I think there are too many downhill changes to Ubuntu for me to ever like it as much as Natty; there are a few new features that I like but they don't outweigh the negatives, and I'm very disappointed that there are no options for previously default or widely-used features and behaviour. But my Natty repos are out-of-date and barely updated anymore, so I need to upgrade. I've thought about trying to get Natty Unity running on Precise or Quantal, but it'd probably be more work than it's worth and it'd just break all the time. So I need to go 'distro shopping' and find something that makes more sense I think. It's not just this issue that's pissed me off, it's this and many other issues in Ubuntu over the last couple of years. Regressions that were so blatantly not accidental, and no care when people don't like them. The "won't fix" attitude is not one that I want to stay around for. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/849482 Title: Instant launcher reveal from top-left corner doesn't work in oneiric To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/849482/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 843373] Re: Dash button on a Launcher. How to return it back to top panel?
I'm still using Natty. I was thrilled when I first saw Unity. I loved how, at the intersection of the panel/menubar and the Unity Launcher, was resided the Dash Home button showing off the Ubuntu logo. Using CCSM, it's easily configured such that the icons aren't excessively big and clumsy, revealing Unity's hidden elegance. It was perfection! I was shocked when I saw Oneiric and I'm still shocked. That there wasn't even an option to revert the ugliness that Unity had become. Not even in the Unity plugin in CCSM. Not even in gconf/dconf. Not even in some config file hidden away somewhere. Let alone a nice, user-friendly preference in system settings! Really, this sleek corner-button should have stayed the default with no need for a 'sleek-style' preference. A default Launcher width of twice the menubar height (48pix rather than the huge 66pix), also wouldn't go amiss. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/843373 Title: Dash button on a Launcher. It does make sense for hwclock to show a timezone. The system is configured whether the hardware clock is in UTC or localtime. It makes sense if hwclock simply reports this configured timezone. [Bug 970966] Re: UTC is incorrectly implemented; it does not handle leap seconds
UTC is uniform but discontinuous. If someone wanted to precisely and reliably measure time between to points, they would need a uniform, continuous standard such as TAI. TAI can be implemented using the defined relation: TAI = UTC + 10s + Announced leap seconds since 1972 (Published here: http://maia.usno.navy.mil/ser7/tai-utc.dat) (24 leap seconds so far) So if UTC incorrectly fails to insert a leap second, TAI would appear to skip a second. I could therefore incorrectly measure a 25ms time interval as 1025ms. I could also implement UT1 (which is continuous but non-uniform) by the defined relation: UT1 = UTC + DUT1 (Published here: http://maia.usno.navy.mil/ser7/finals.all) See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DUT1 Again, if UTC incorrectly fails to insert a leap second, UT1 would appear to skip a second, and incorrectly be discontinuous. See IERS who publish the astronomical data and announce leap seconds: http://www.iers.org/ http://maia.usno.navy.mil/ Anyway, how does it make sense to sync a clock over the network to high precision using time protocols, when the system's UTC can't even be relied on to a precision of a second? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/970966 Title: UTC is incorrectly implemented; it does not handle leap seconds To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/970966/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

"Furthermore you have to make the changes for the latest revision of aptdaemon - that is where the development takes place." I'll merge it. BTW, I actually started on r646 because that was the version I had installed when I started attempting to fix it. I merged to r661 which was an update for Natty before making a branch. I tried a later revision but it didn't work. It probably depends on a lot of new things in Apt, python-apt, etc. I hope you don't mind that I'm developing on Natty. [Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
While cleaning up the code, I realised how to show the details. So now details for each file works as well. I've tried it with Software Centre and Update Manager and they both work well. I'm using this myself now, not just testing. I'm quite happy with it. As far as I'm concerned this bug is fixed and no longer affects me. Just need Bittorrent and LPD now. But I'm not sure where to lookup the BTIHs from, as they won't be on Ubuntu's servers. (At least not for a while.) Maybe I could use DHT, but I don't know the scope of DHT or whether that's possible. Or Avahi for a LAN-only solution. I'll file a new ticket. The branch is branched off r661 as that's is the latest version for good ol' Natty. ** Changed in: aptdaemon Assignee: James Haigh (james.r.haigh) => (unassigned) ** Branch linked: lp:~aptdaemon-developers/aptdaemon/separation -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830492 Title: Downloads should not lock apt To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/apt/+bug/830492/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
Hi Sebastian. I got progress to refresh on Thursday night. Software Centre works flawlessly for install and remove, and Update Manager works and shows progress but is missing details for files. Updating package information still works the old way, so those downloads still lock but are relatively small. "I don't understand why you want to add a custom download tool? Apt already supports a variety of protocols." So does Aria2. By using a dedicated download tool we save reinventing/reimplementing. Package Management in Ubuntu is moving towards Aptdaemon anyway. By all means add support in Apt, but I can't help out with that yet as my C is poor. I'm hoping to add Bittorent support but in any case the BTIH would be required. It would be ideal if this was supplied along with the MD5, SHA1 and SHA256 hashes. Using Aria2 or Deluge, we already have great features like Local Peer Discovery and DHT. LPD would allow a LAN to download updates only once rather than the number of Ubuntu machines on the LAN. Out-of-the-box! It would make many updates and installs a lot quicker, and save data throughput for both the LAN and Canonical's servers. I'll look at your branch and I'm also in the process of cleaning up and preparing my branch. My code is still a bit messy because I'm inexperienced and new to Aptdaemon/Python-apt. I'm hoping that these features will make it into Precise. I'm hoping to save some bandwidth for people, and make updates, installs and removes a lot quicker and more fluent. Anyway, it will be a /lot/ harder to use Bittorent if there are no BTIHs available. Could they be computed on the repo servers along with the other hashes? [Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
Michael, I've been working on implementing this in Aptdaemon. It's going quite well. I have downloads working concurrently without locking Apt. I'm testing with Update Manager, as it's a little more verbose than Software Centre. Download progress isn't working, I'm trying to figure out how/when/where it updates over DBus. I haven't used GObject before. I have a function to update the value but I don't know where to call it from. I'm currently using Aria2 for downloads. [Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
> Great to hear that you work on a more general fix for apt-get. As described in comment #5, I was originally planning to make a virtual package server such that a list of files can be easily obtained from any package manager just by directing it to the server. It would then download them and place in /var/cache/apt/archives/, then you would try again in the package manager which would have nothing to download. I was going to wrap apt-get such that the retry is automatic. Then I noticed that instead of wrapping apt-get, there are some Python APT bindings available. And I was about to start reinventing parts of Aptdaemon. So instead of using apt-get, I will use aptdcon and implement solutions in Aptdaemon as described in comment #7. After I have done this, I may still apply the virtual package server idea as an Aptdaemon client. This may allow 'legacy' package managers like Synaptic to /partially/ use Aptdaemon and allow concurrent downloads/installs. Synaptic, however, will still require bug #80753 to be fixed in this case. > Download and install in parallel is currently progressing only slowly, during > the current summer of code we got a new order algorithm that can now order > the packages in a way that puts them together in groups that can be installed > independently. That's interesting. Are those groups equivalent to transactions? > You linksed to "pacserve" which is quite interessting. Are you aware of the > similar (but not quite the same) project "squid-deb-proxy" and > "squid-deb-proxy-client" ? No, I hadn't. My long-term aim is that more efficient downloads (from LAN if available) can be achieved without configuring or messing around with proxies/shared caches/local mirrors/etc. So I'm preferring to contribute to Aptdaemon. It would be awesome if Ubuntu has these Aptdaemon solutions out-of-the-box. I'm also thinking that this is going to take a great deal of load off Ubuntu's servers if/when this happens. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/830492 Title: Downloads should not lock apt To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/apt/+bug/830492/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
Hey Michael, sorry I've not been participating recently. I've had a good look at Aptdaemon and touched on the Python APT bindings. This is what I envision: A transaction's download and install parts are separated. == Install == The install part should be like apt-get's '--no-download' option, so '_apply_changes' should never download files. No lock should be waiting for a download; this is wasting time. Only installs/removes/upgrades/triggers/etc should be holding a lock; the things that actually need it. When taking the next transaction in the queue in the function '_on_transaction_done', instead of: next_trans = self._queue.popleft() next_trans should be the next transaction /that has nothing to download/. == Download == apt-get's '--print-uris' option outputs lines like this: 'http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/gnash/gnash_0.8.9-1ubuntu1_i386.deb' gnash_0.8.9-1ubuntu1_i386.deb 197240 MD5Sum:32996ac2d709e1c6e0b65a90272202bb Of course all of this information can be represented in the form of a magnet URI, something like this: magnet:?as=http%3A//gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/gnash/gnash_0.8.9-1ubuntu1_i386.deb&dn=gnash_0.8.9-1ubuntu1_i386.deb&xl=197240&xt=urn:md5:32996ac2d709e1c6e0b65a90272202bb If the apt repo could also supply the BTIH, then the whole thing becomes very easy. A 'xt=urn:btih:' parameter can be added to the magnet which will be sent via RPC to Aria2 in daemon mode or deluge's server part. This approach could also allow load balancing of mirrors by specifying multiple Acceptable Source ('as') params to the magnet, and would make it trivial to obtain packages from other machines on the LAN making downloads upto 2 orders of magnitude faster out-of-the-box. I prefer the idea of having only one download utility on a machine (or even a LAN), this way downloads can be reordered or paused by any RPC client. When each file completes it is placed in /var/cache/apt/archives/ as usual, and of course when all files for a transaction complete, that transaction can be applied. So how is this sounding? Personally, I can't wait to get this working.

[Bug 769114] Re: there are no hints showing when I keep the mouse hovering an indicator icon
I find tooltips annoying, because there is no control over them (just delay), and when they appear they often obscure the very thing that you're trying to interact with. This helps the notification area feel less cluttered unlike the old version. However, much less information is accessible since they've gone. Possible solutions: * Integrate _all_ information that tooltips used to show into the menus. * Bring back tooltips but only show them when a chosen modifier key is pressed. (And /not/ right under the pointer!) If this sounds like it will bring back clutter, then add options. I'd like an option to see the charge percentage and volume percentage. "5. Ensure that the parent window receives the focus by clicking on it..." Note that the parent window will not become focused. While it is waiting for the dialog to close, it will transfer it's focus to the dialog whenever it receives focus. [Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
I have thought of a solution involving a Python script that is simple enough for me to work on, without having to touch apt-get code. The reason this bug is important to me is that I have a slow Internet connection. A more general solution is to implement a network shared package cache like Pacserve[1] or pkgdistcache[2]. It doesn't matter that apt is locked during a download if the packages are already in the local cache (/var/cache/apt/archives/) because the download stage is instantaneous. My script will run a virtual package server on localhost which should be set as the only repository in Software Sources. When my script receives a request it starts downloading the package from the quickest location, and sends an error to the apt client. My script will then get a complete list of packages to download, and the package manager will exit. I will also make a wrapper for apt-get so that when the download is finished, installation can proceed automatically. Synaptic will require bug #80753 to be fixed so that the lock is only made when changes are applied. It then also needs to integrate with the download script to display progress and proceed with installation automatically. Ubuntu Software Centre would just need to integrate with the script because it is not affected by bug #80753 anyway. So I'm assigning this bug to me, but for Synaptic this solution is blocked by bug #80753, so can someone please try to fix that. [Bug 830492] Re: Downloads should not lock apt
a: This could be solved be checking the cache just after locking for install. If any changes have occurred that conflict with the install then Synaptic should remove the install lock and ask the user what do to about the conflict. This would be failsafe because it is checking /after/ locking for install, but Synaptic could additionally check periodically to give users an early warning. b: I already considered b in the bug description: "To avoid multiple instances of apt downloading the same file, each partial file should have it's own lock (For example, /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/inkscape_0.48.1-2ubuntu2_i386.deb would have inkscape_0.48.1-2ubuntu2_i386.lock)." This would prevent 2 applications from downloading the same file. c: So while an update is still in the download phase, I install a package that conflicts with the update. This is very rare because if the package /is/ going to conflict, it will most likely conflict /before/ the update. But in this case, when the update finishes downloading, it should lock for install, check the cache and notice the conflict, remove the install lock, print a message about the conflict, and quit.

[Bug 830492] [NEW] Downloads should not lock apt
Public bug reported: It should be possible to download while installing, or download 2 things at once. Currently an apt-get command with '--download-only' will lock apt (/var/lib/dpkg/lock). Synaptic even locks apt just by being open! Examples: * I might be updating my system. The update is still in the download stage, and I want to download and install a small package for something. Currently I would have to stop the download, install the package, and resume the download. * I'm installing lots of application from the Software Centre. While 1 app is installing the next should be downloading. * Run apt-get from command line while browsing software in Synaptic. To avoid multiple instances of apt downloading the same file, each partial file should have it's own lock (For example, /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/inkscape_0.48.1-2ubuntu2_i386.deb would have inkscape_0.48.1-2ubuntu2_i386.lock). It may also be necessary to prevent updating package lists (sudo apt-get update) when any download lock exists as well as apt's main lock. ** Affects: apt Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: synaptic Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apt Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: synaptic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: synaptic Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: It should be possible to download while installing, or download 2 things at once. [Bug 830328] [NEW] When restoring a previous Firefox session, minimised windows appear briefly
Public bug reported: When restoring from many windows and tabs, windows flicker around for a while. This includes windows that were minimised when Firefox was closed. The window opens then minimises a moment later, unless it is the original window which stays unminimised. Tested on Natty. Steps to reproduce: * Start a guest session. * Launch Firefox. * Edit Preferences to 'Show my windows and tabs from last time'. * Hold Ctrl-T for a second. * Load a specific page to make a note of the original window. (Ex: ddg.gg) * Press Ctrl-N. * Hold Ctrl-T for a second. * Repeat the previous 2 steps until there are 10 windows in total. (See screenshot '10-windows.png') * Press Super-D. * Press Alt-Tab. (See screenshot 'all-but-1-minimised.png') Notice that only 1 window is unminimised and it isn't the original. * Press Ctrl-Q. * Launch Firefox. (See screenshot 'bugs-on-restore.png') Notice the flickering of windows appearing and minimising. Notice that the original window is unminimised, so there are now 2 unminimised windows. Minimised windows shouldn't even appear; they should /start/ minimised. The original window should also stay minimised. Other bugs: I expect you will also trigger this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/803831 Notice also that in half of the windows, globalmenu-extension stops working. [Bug 829784] Re: forward-search-history keybinding C-s conflicts with scroll lock

[Bug 829784] [NEW] forward-search-history keybinding C-s conflicts with scroll lock
Public bug reported: The default keybinding for forward-search-history does not work because the terminal captures ^S (Ctrl-S). The TTYs activate scroll lock. Gnome Terminal just seems to discard it. C-q (Ctrl-Q) should also be avoided; that is for scroll unlock. The default keybinding does nothing, so forward-search-history should be mapped to another keybinding by default. reverse-search-history is mapped to Ctrl-R which works fine. [Bug 828423] [NEW] Mobile broadband GSM/HSUPA status doesn't update
Public bug reported: The status doesn't update unless I reconnect the connection. Sometimes it says GSM when I have way more bandwidth than what 2.xG supports (See the screenshot). Other times it says HSUPA when bandwidth is at a snails pace. The status looks like this: 3 Internet (3 UK GSM) 3 Internet (3 UK HSUPA) If the status correctly updated, this would be a useful feature. When bandwidth goes slow, I would be able to click on the NM applet and check to see whether I've lost HSUPA signal and fallen back to GSM. [Bug 692569] Re: unity --replace would be nice
I'm using unity 3.8.16-0ubuntu1~natty1 and I don't see --replace in the man page. It does accept the option but I don't see any difference; both with and without, the existing instance crashes with 'Segmentation fault'. With or without other options, I would expect: * unity /with/ --replace to quit rather than crash the existing instance, and * unity /without/ --replace to say it's already running and quit. Take Compiz for example: james@james-ThinkPad-X60-Tablet:~$ compiz compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. I've attached output from the terminal for when a second instance of unity is run. I added space-hash-comment to note when I did something. See lines starting with space-hash (' #'). ** Attachment added: "692569-unity-1st-instance" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/692569/+attachment/2284979/+files/692569-unity-1st-instance -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692569 Title: unity --replace would be nice To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/692569/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
