[Bug 1341925] Re: [Dell Inspiron 11 - 3147] System will hang on reboot / poweroff

2014-09-02 Thread James Sparenberg
May I request that this bug be upgraded to high priority. (P1) As this
is not just a 3147 issue and it's not ACPI related. If you look here.
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=ubuntu+14.04+won%27t+shut+downspell=1
This is being reported in the forums and across the web in a wide
variety of hardware. Right now the solution is fairly straight forward.
Install something other than 14.04. This also is reported in but
1346269 as well With different HW.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1346269 Thank you.

2010-10-15 Thread James Sparenberg
Currently no 10.4 does not work. On this. Since this is a corporate
environment I don't want to move to 10.10 we wanted to stick with the
LTS system for the duration, only migrating to 12.04 I've been keeping
one system as my test bed, But so far none of the updates have fixed
this. Thanks.

[Bug 643845] [NEW] /usr/bin/time doesn't allow switches/flag/options

2010-09-20 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: time

Package: time-1.7-23build1
Release: Ubuntu 10.04

IAW the man page if I do

time -a -o log ls

It should append the result of the time command to a file called log for
the length of time it takes the command ls to run. however when I do
run this I get the following.

ja...@james-pc:~$ time -a -o log ls
-a: command not found

real0m0.256s
user0m0.210s
sys 0m0.030s

Now if I switch to the full name of the command

ja...@james-pc:~$ time --output log ls
--output: command not found

real0m0.277s
user0m0.250s
sys 0m0.030s

this is the way the man page shows to run it as well. The example in
the man page is

time -a -o log emacs bork

Which also fails, in the same way.

[Bug 589453] [NEW] mail command in mailutiils hangs and has to be killed.

2010-06-03 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mailutils

package mailutils-1:2.1+dfsg1-4ubuntu1  Lucid Lynx x86_64

Problem:

When attempting to send a mail from the command line you get the
following.

mail ja...@myemail.com
Cc:
Subject: test me
helo
.

At this point it's hung. I am able to enter the return key and lines
increase... I can enter more text but after 15 minutes still nothing has
happened. As you see I did enter a (.) on a new line. This is an
unmodified 10.4 install currently up to date. This is a real problem as
I've a number of systems that won't be going to LTS until I can get them
to be able to send mail out of reports, cron jobs etc.

[Bug 426909] Re: avahi logs invalid query without enough debug data

2010-06-03 Thread James Sparenberg
Red Hat also noted the bug back in 5.2 but relegated it to errata, then
didn't pick the bug back up.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438013

Debian has a work around here.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=534622

basically edit a new file

/etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/avahi-daemon

add this line to the file

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ avahi-daemon\[[0-9]+\]: Invalid query
packet.$

save it and make sure that the ownership and permissions match the other
files in the dir. Then restart the Avahi Daemon. (restart avahi-
daemon) So far it seems to be working here.

[Bug 571972] Re: With Lucid Lynx after upgrade or install mounts mounted with automounter daemon don't mount

2010-05-24 Thread James Sparenberg
I wish to retract my statement about 100% effective on adding the line
mount_type = autofs as I've run into two upgrade systems that did not
work right, so much so that it eventually borked the install on one.
(No problem thanks to amd I've got disposable installs however
) ;)

Has anyone tried pining the am-utils version in 10.04 back to the
version from 9.10 or 9.04? I'm wondering if that will give a clue as to
what changed. I'm planning on doing some experimentation in this
direction I'll report what I find.

[Bug 524454] Re: Networking is disabled on boot

2010-05-18 Thread James Sparenberg
Running Lucid Kubuntu here. Fully up to date and I can report that it
is still occurring for me as well. All I've come up with is that if I
attempt to hibernate or suspend to ram (both fail in Lucid both worked
in Karmic, this install is a clean install as I wanted to re-partition.
)

If I either write a script in rc.local that sed's the
NetworkManager.state file on startup to change false to true, or if I
use the chattr command and set the immutable bit (chattr +i so that not
even root can modify the file.) it doesn't have this problem after a
suspend crash/failure occurs. However if I don't do this every time
suspend of any kind crashes or fails I have this problem occur.

What appears to happen is that normal suspend should write this state
info out to this file so that the system doesn't react to commands while
suspended. (Like wake-on-lan?) then it should write back to the file
upon return from suspend to re-enable connectivity. This also seems to
have the added advantage of dealing with cases where you suspend with
wireless at location A and resume with wireless or wired at location B.
You don't end up with the iPad problem (this is good.)

The solution seems to be giving knetworkmanager or the gnome equivalent
a button to Enable Network Management Conversely a button to disable
it would also be a nice feature. In other words I don't think the bug
is with the code as it exists, I think the bug is a missing feature (ie
the Enable button)

[Bug 573696] Re: dpkg: ../../src/archives.c:763: tarobject: Assertion `r == stab.st_size' failed. Aborted

2010-05-03 Thread James Sparenberg
I'd like to say not yet on closing this. As this bug affects the
ability to do custom CD's for ubuntu installation as well. Even an
attempt to something like upgrade/update a CD is affected... 9.10 still
would allow me to do an apt-get update (customization done IAW
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization) and associated
installation of packages. I can take a 9.04 CD break it out like this
and do an apt-get upgrade to 9.10. If I attempt to do either one of
these two processes. (upgrade 9.10 to 10.4 in the chroot jail, or just
do an apt-get update of 10.4) I get the now for me infamous dpkg:

The following is an excerpt from inside the chroot jail. When attempting

[Bug 571972] [NEW] With Lucid Lynx after upgrade or install mounts mounted with automounter daemon don't mount

2010-04-29 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: am-utils

1. This occurs both in upgrades from 9.10 and Fresh Installs.

2. Recreation method: Start am-utils

3. Significant error messages (similar too)

 Apr 29 17:42:02 temp6 amd[4285]/error: '/net': mount: No locks
available

or
   Apr 29 17:42:03 temp6 amd[4283]/fatal: amfs_toplvl_mount: amfs_mount
failed: No locks available

This occurs with configuration files that prior to the upgrade/install worked
fine. This does however have a work around that for me at least has proven
100% effective. Adding this line to the [global] section of
/etc/am-utils/amd.conf

  mount_type = autofs

Seems that this is actually an upstream kernel problem with kernels
above 2.6.24, however I felt it would be best to report it for the
purpose of tracking and finding a way to alert people on how to manage
this problem. Additionally I've tested putting the line into the
amd.conf of 9.10 systems and it has had no negative affect on
performance.

[Bug 491977] [NEW] am-utils reads but ignores cache_duration settings in amd.conf

2009-12-03 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: am-utils

Settings on our systems has cache_duration = 1800 (30 minutes) what we
are seeing however is that the mount disappears with 2 minutes (amd
default timeout) of last access. This is occurring most noticeably now
that we are switching to karmic 64bit and new servers.

Impact is severe as time outs on directories are happening during the
build process, as it can sometimes be 3 or 4 minutes before the dir or
it's associated libs are needed again. (cross compile environment micro
OS)

The only way we have found to hold a dir open is to have a user cd into
a dir. This is why our home dirs don't disappear.

an ls of a dir will bring the mount back but a call to a specific file
will fail. so if I do

ls /auto/mount/

I get a return of the correct files in that dir, but if I do

/auto/mount/somelib.so.1

I will get a file not found error. Yes it seems that if we modify the
make file to do an ls prior to every section of all potential dirs it
might work around, however this is not viable. Make files are too long
each and too complex in the manor in which they call each other. (Add
in parallel building and it's way to much to work around.).

Under 9.04 this action was not observed. Under 9.10 both 32 and 64 bit
however we see the following when full logging is turned on.

Here is the log snip snip when the dir is mounted by doing an ls

*
Dec 2 17:52:34 guitar amd[20263]/info: netapp1:/vol/vol1/linux-bin
mounted fstype nfs on /.amd/netapp1/vol/vol1/linux-bin
Dec 2 17:52:34 guitar amd[20263]/info: /volume/linux-bin set to
timeout in 1800 seconds
*

Notice that it did read and acknowledge reading the 1800 second param
our amd.conf sets. Then you see this.

*
Dec 2 17:54:35 guitar amd[20263]/info: call_mountd: NFS version 3,
mount version 3
Dec 2 17:54:35 guitar amd[20263]/info: removing mountpoint directory
'/.amd/netapp1/vol/vol1/linux-bin'
*

You'll notice from the time stamps that it's only 2 minutes after
mounting that it auto unmounted the dir. Instead of the 1800 sec set in
the param. 2 minutes according to the man page is the default timeout.
One of our QA people said that they suspected a variable mismatch is the
culprit. However they looked at me with a blank stare when I asked if
they could help me in tracing it out. ;)

Please contact me directly if you need to. I'd like to help how I can
in getting this one right.

Running an Aspire 1410 here. My output of xinput -list-props has this

[Bug 445199] Re: ubiquity crashes while attempting to create user

2009-10-08 Thread James Sparenberg
Found the cause. My home directory was (and has been for years) on a
partition formated reiserfs. I had to jump through a ton of hoops to
avoid having to pulll off 80 some gigs of data and reformating, then
putting it back on. Once it no longer saw any reiser partions ... it
worked.

[Bug 445193] [NEW] missing rieserfsprogs from install cd

2009-10-07 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

The live/install cd either needs to contain the reiserfsprogs package so
that a partition can be formatted reiserfs or a reiserfs partition that
exists can be used or the option to user reiserfs needs to be removed
from the installer and the users informed that they will need to re-
format their partitions previously formated with reiserfs. (like Home)

First - Thanks for fixing this. Second I've found the work around for
the bug. If you install nfs-kernel-server you can mount/unmount nfs
shares without a problem. It seems whatever is missing from kernel
2.6.28-15 is in the nfs-kernel-server package.

Hope this helps someone trying to solve an immediate problem. --thanks

[Bug 94635] Re: [apport] kicker crashed with SIGSEGV in XConnectionNumber()

2007-10-30 Thread James Sparenberg
Didn't know which of these to attach to . But I have been experiencing
similar problems with near constant crashes of kicker. Then I noticed
that when kicker crashed the systray applet would come back in a
damaged state with only half of it's icons or worse.

So I created a new panel small that only holds systray. Not a single
crash since then. If I put another applet in that panel, or if I move
the applet to my other panel. It crashes. Further testing in that
PCLinuxOS just updated to kde3.8. Low and behold the exact same
behavior. Constant kicker crashes, I moved the systray off and sure
enough, the crashes have stopped. I plan on checking upstream for bug
reports. But it does seem to be connected to systray and related to
kde3.8.

1. I didn't file the bug. It was at the time I commented on it the ONLY

2. launchpad wouldn't let the bug go against kopete it kept moving me over to

3. The dang bug was closed out ages ago why are you yelling at me now?

[Bug 129801] Re: kde-window-decorator crashes in gutsy

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Experiencing 3 - 4 crashes an hour. No backtrace available as it keeps
restarting itself. Nothing from KDE ever goes into /var/crash. output
of lspci at the end. I've found the rate of crashes happens the same
with and without the 915 extension to the video driver. The following
does make it crash nearly every time.

1. Update of settings.
2. Install of any new kde app.
3. Startup music (about 3/4 of the way through every time.)

Occasionally I can get this to make it crash

1. Right click on kicker and choose to lock/unlock the panel
2. Add or remove an applet.
3. Open the menu.
4. loging in (results in lockups and/or partial screen draws.)

Basically Gutsy is almost unusable. Sorry to say that but I'm really
frustrated with it.

[Bug 155981] compiz-fusion Cube has only 2 faces

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

The cube effect in compiz-fusion for Gutsy only shows 2 faces despite
that fact that in the wall I have 4 faces. The work around is to logout
login and hope that it's working the next time around. Usually 4 -6
logins and restarts of X are needed to get all of compiz working and the
cube to have 4 faces + caps. follows is output of lspci. All of this
worked without a problem in Fiesty.

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

in order to get compiz to work and all aspects of the screen to display
it can require up to 6 restarts of the x server on my laptop. This
laptop previously ran feisty with compiz-fusion without a problem.
Gutsy however results in a system that is unusable. Now all plugins
will function on any one restart and that aspect is hit or miss. The
following plugins have been found to not start.

1. Cube (beyond 2 faces)
2. Cube caps
3. Resize
4. Move Window
5. Put.

Additionally it will crash multiple times or frequently it works but
extremely slow. Top shows now excessive CPU usage but screen updates
are jerky and hard to work with. Below is the output of lspci

[Bug 155993] Exchange calendar events show up as unknow attachement

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Evolution in Gutsy is missing the Mime type to allow it to be able to
process M$ exchange calendar events. As a result it's impossible to
accept/modify/acknowledge calendar events via evolution. All available
plugins listed in synaptic have been installed and activated but still
unable to view calendar events.

Then I went so far as to wack the .evolution directory in my home
directory and found that I'm still unable to view calendar events. Same
holds true when remove all .gnome* and .gconf and .config directories as
well.

current version of evolution is 2.12 as supplied in Gutsy.

[Bug 10669] Re: Filters are not applied to new mail on Exchange

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Also getting this with gutsy. Noticed that this is true for not only
and evolution dir brought forward but also if an account is created
fresh.

Further I've noticed that it often applies, some, of the filters but not
all or it will apply the filters on one checkin of mail but not the
next.

[Bug 155981] Re: compiz-fusion Cube has only 2 faces

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Unfortunately that is the setting I have. On occasion 4 faces show up.
On other occasions only 2. The settings however remain the same 4 all
around.

[Bug 156044] kmail settings for default account keeps removing default e-mail address

2007-10-22 Thread James Sparenberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

New install of Gutsy with Kmail 1.9.6, using an existing home directory
but new .kde directory. (imported old mailboxes) With my user account
set at 1st run. Problem is that every time I close kmail and logout, it
forgets my default e-mail address.

I re-enter the address click either ok or apply then ok (I've tried both
ways) it will remember my settings until the next restart. The worst
part is that when I check the kmailrc file in my config dir I see my
default e-mail address even though kmail can't.

[Bug 154525] Re: distribution upgrade continues to be an option after upgrade

2007-10-20 Thread James Sparenberg
Additional confirm. With an update to tzdata that came out adept
manager wanted to continue down the path of an update. Listed all of
the files then declared me up to date and allowed me to cancel.

[Bug 62255] Re: pptpd on edgy

2006-11-30 Thread James Sparenberg
Additionally pptp does not work with edgy.I even tried downgrading
kernel pptpconfig ppp to the versions in Dapper with equally poor
success. My solution was to re-install dapper (this is a daily use
system and I've got to interface with Balmy's World.) WM made no
difference.

The problem is not connecting, as it does connect but from command line
or using pptpconfig it hangs right at the point where it should be
modding route and resolv.conf. No errors no output to log or screen
just hangs forever.

Running on a Dell 610 latitude laptop Centrino, 2.4ghz Intel cpu 1G ram
The problem exists both wifi and land line.
