[Bug 1440339] [NEW] unity-settings-daemon grabs meta-p

2015-04-04 Thread Jean-Marc Bourguet
Public bug reported:

I've configured everything I could so that meta (the logo key) is passed
to applications, desktop programs are using key combination with alt.
Yet unity-settings-daemon is grabbing meta-p.

How do I know?
$ xdotool keydown "meta+p"; xdotool key "XF86LogGrabInfo"; xdotool keyup
"meta+p"
then looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log

System: Ubuntu 14.10

$ setxkbmap -print
xkb_keymap {
xkb_keycodes  { include "evdev+aliases(azerty)" };
xkb_types { include "complete"  };

  };
xkb_geometry  { include "pc(pc105)" };
};
$ dconf dump / | grep -i meta
xkb-options=['terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp', 'compose:menu', 'lv3:ralt_switch',

2015-03-11 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Hello,

Can you check something for me? Please give us the last modification date of
*  /usr/share/lyx/configure.py
* ~/.lyx_backup/lyxrc.default

For the later, I see 10/03/2015, but I'd like to know when was the last
time you Reconfigured LyX that first time the problem happened.

The reason why I ask this strange thing is the reconfiguration is done
automatically when the configure script is newer than the files that got
generated. I suspect that it was not the case for you, and that the date
of configure.py is the date when the package was built.

[Bug 1335642] Re: mdadm runs into infinite loop and prevents initrd/initramfs phase to finish on boot

2014-11-10 Thread Jean-Marc Le Peuvedic
Hello all!

Problem with same symptom (loops on the same massage).
My system boots on a USB stick and has 4 sata disks in RAID 5 with 3 active and
a hot spare. One of the disks failed and was kicked
out of the array (probably a transient failure, needs further investigation).
For some reason I then lost all access means to the machine, although Apache
was still responding. The machine did not react to an ACPI reboot and I hard
rebooted it while it was rebuilding the RAID on the spare disk ...
It should have come up fine on 2 disks, but instead was stuck with the four
line beginning with "Incrementally starting RAID arrays".
Some keying after boot in recovery mode lets me down to a root shell on
initdisk. I can see that the RAID is active forced read only on two disks out
of three. If I stop it and assemble it again from the working disks, it is
just active, ready to go and can be mounted.
I have re-added the failed and spare partitions: if the failing one fails again
rebuilding will proceed on the hot spare. Reconstruction of the missing RAID
component is ongoing.

I have operated Linux RAID setups for many years and I have had several
disk failures, some transient, some final. The boot scripts can handle
that in 10.04 LTS and 12.04 LTS. In 14.04 LTS something changed: it may
be mdadm choosing by default to assemble the array read only?

Hoping to provide useful information.

[Bug 1075833] Re: Untranslated strings on error message

2014-09-03 Thread Jean Marc
Hi,

It's the same in French with Trusty.
String 45 is not translated in Ubuntu because the last sentence is different.

- In update-notifier in Launchpad translations: "Please update manually
by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and
check if some of the listed repositories fail."

- As displayed: "Please update manually by selecting 'Show updates' from
the indicator menu, and watching for any failing repositories."

With my LyX developer hat on:

It is known indeed that LyX has problems with the way display is handled.
Unfortunately,
nobody is has the right amount of knowledge and free time to fix that currently.

I would be interested to know what happens if you add to your preferences file
(usually in the ~/.lyx directory) the
line:
  \use_qimage false

This will make LyX use a Pixmap (that lives in the display server)
instead of an image which lives in main memory.

[Bug 1303688] Re: SRU bug-fix microrelease 2.0.8.1 in Trusty

2014-06-20 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I definitely support this update request, although I am not really
competent wrt Ubuntu policies.

LyX 2.0.8.1 is the final 2.0.x release, which is able to read files
produced by the newer 2.1.x versions. In these stables series, we try
very hard to avoid dangerous changes. Stables updates are supposed to be
"no risk" releases, although of course life is never as simple as that!
Since 2.0.8.1 is the last 2.0 version, we have been particularly
careful. In particular, all 2.0.x version create the same lyx file
format.

The only really new code is the one that reads 2.1.x files. This one
probably still contains bugs, but IMO this release is better/safer than
all previous 2.0.x releases.

[Bug 1311192] Re: [HP Pavilion p6352fr] Scrolling is jerky after suspend/resume

2014-05-09 Thread Jean Marc
The problem comes from dpm and Radeon HD4350 graphic card.
Unable to continue the Git process, I fixed the issue by adding a parameter in
Grub.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.dpm=0"

See "Grub" in attachment.

[Bug 1311192] Re: [HP Pavilion p6352fr] Scrolling is jerky after suspend/resume

2014-05-07 Thread Jean Marc
Christopher, I made a mistake in the first bisect log. Here is the first part
of the new one called "bisect log 2".
Only the first part because I'm stalled at the 7th step.
I can't check if the problem persists because now hard drive don't suspend with
that custom kernel.

[Bug 1311192] Re: [HP Pavilion p6352fr] Scrolling is jerky after suspend/resume

2014-05-03 Thread Jean Marc
Sorry Christopher but I'm definitely not a Git expert.

However, I tried different kernels of that page:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

V3.12.18 kernel works.

The problem appears from V3.13-rc1 kernel.

I hope it could help.

[Bug 1303688] Re: Update to bug-fix release 2.0.7 in Trusty

2014-04-07 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I will not pretend that I understand how what the procedure look like
for Trusty, but FWIW lyx 2.0.8 (the final 2.0.x version) should be
released in the coming days, alongside 2.1.0 (which is less stable stuff
of course).

[Bug 1246601] Re: Scope would be friendlier if calc: worked like calculator: does

2014-02-04 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I guess there are reasons why a prefix is needed, but my favorite one
besides calc: (calculator: is just out of question) is "=", like in a
spreadsheet (if such a thing is possible with scopes).

Actually, I was happy to find this scope, but now I see that it is not
better than launching the calculator applet by hand.

I use "sudo nmcli nm sleep false" to restore the connection, "sudo

[Bug 347378] Re: Two columns in Hebrew is in LTR

I stand corrected. Actually, this bug has been fixed upstream in LyX
2.0.6. See http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/6389.

I am not sure what are the plans for getting 2.0.6 in saucy, though. But
the lyx ppa will contain all that.

[Bug 1038162] Re: HUD doesn't work with Lyx until after opening the menus manually

2012-11-21 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
I believe this is a bug in unity. The peculiar handling of menus that we
have in LyX already caused problems when top-screen menus where
introduced, but this now works.

I suspect that the solution is in unity itself.

Or if it happens that LyX itself shouold react to some signal to
populate its menus, please let us know.

[Bug 880676] Re: LyX spellchecker doesn't work in the Ubuntu repository version

This seems to indicate that the LyX package should require enchant. The
support for it is new to 2.0.0.

I do not know actually what is the default ubuntu spellchecking tool.
LyX probably supports it: enchant, hunspell and aspell are supported.

This happens because the contents of each LyX menu is generated as the

[Bug 1004958] [NEW] extra HDMI display on laptop HP 4310S : slow mouse

2012-05-26 Thread Jean-Marc Vanel
Public bug reported:

On my laptop HP 4310S, when I connect an extra HDMI display, after a while
(minutes), the mouse and keyboard respond very slowly.
The 2 displays are one above the other.

I have no special settings on X11 .

When I disconnect the HDMI screen, the problem stops at once.

This bug is old, about one year ( since then I used a double boot with Debian ).
But I kept checking Ubuntu from time to time.

[Bug 897493] Re: Lyx crashes randomly, even when left standby

2012-05-23 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
Is it a bout a hang (LyX is unresponsive) or a crash (the windows
disappears)?

I do not think I have seen such a report on http://trac.lyx.org

[Bug 1003419] Re: Lyx does not preserve DOS/Unix line endings

2012-05-23 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
The correct solution to this problem is to use
  svn propset svn:eol native

This way windows users will see a file with CR+LF, and unix users will
see plain LF.

I agree that LyX could implement what you describe, but that would be a
problem for (say windows) users who use an editor (say notepad) which
does not honor LF end of lines. It is precisely for these admittedly
naive users that we should make as unsurprising as possible. Especially
since svn does all the work.

Re: [Bug 598696] Re: instantaneous kernel freeze on intel server

2012-04-20 Thread Jean-Marc Le Peuvedic
I was pleased to see you coming back to me. Unfortunately, the
headless server suffered from inadapted power cycling, resulting in
damage on the RAID array and a non bootable system. I managed to
return it to a bootable state, but thousands of files are damaged and
ssh access doesn't work. It is presently waiting for a full backup of
user data, before a full reinstall.

I will do these tests when I have time, and when a more convenient ssh
shell becomes available.

I'll keep you informed. I am familiar with the tools and processes
evoked in your message (apport).

Best regards,

JM Le Peuvédic

[Bug 938235] Re: Application needs hi-res or SVG icon

2012-03-06 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
What I meant is that we provide a svg icon and that the autotools
machinery tries to install it in freedektop-mandated places. However, I
would not be surprised to find that there is some packaging to do on the
debian/ubuntu side of things to make use of it.

So this is probably a shortcoming of this particular build.

2012-03-05 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
This problem is fixed in LyX 2.0.3, released today. It would make sense
to upgrade LyX at least in precise and oneiric, since stable releases
tend to be very safe.

[Bug 812020] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB, playback] No sound at all

2011-07-17 Thread Jean-Marc Wislez
Public bug reported:

Sound did work on Ubuntu 10.04, but doesn't after 11.04 upgrade or fresh
install (mythbuntu). It's the jack back connectors that don't work.
While trying to solve the problem I did from time to time have sound
through the headphones output (not at the time of filing the bug
though).

ProblemType: Bug

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: phpmyadmin

I tried to install phpMyAdmin using apt. I guess the problem basically
occured because I restarted the Apache server while PhpMyadmin was being
installed. The point is I thought PhpMyadmin was successfuly installed
(a box opened asking me which server I wanted PhpMyAdmin to work with
-Apache2 ). The computer is a bit slow and the 2nd configuration box
popped up after the server restart. It is not possible to configure
database now.

[Bug 756538] Re: [Sync request] Please sync lyx 2.0.0~rc2-1 from Debian Unstable

2011-04-10 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
A few details with my LyX developer hat on :

Concerning the LuaTeX situation : LyX 2.0 has support for it as well as XeTeX.
However LuaTeX in
Texlive 2009 is not mature enough to be usable and we added in rc2 new code to
detect this situation and avoid to use it.
This is therefore a fix rather than a new bug.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask for more details.

2.0.0rc3 should be out in a matter of days, BTW.

[Bug 353449] Re: lyx 1.6.x impossibly slow

I would propose to recompile with --enable-build-type=prof, compile, and then
run LyX under
a profiler like sysprof. This should show what is the process that uses all the
time. If it turns out that it is X, then I am not sure how to proceed.

I don't, but I am not the author of the comment. I can ask, though.

Could there be some connection between evince and LyX (related to
forward/backward search)?

[Bug 619811] Re: does not show Lyx menu

2010-11-19 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
With my LyX developer hat on (and my LyX menu system designer cap on my
hat).

The bug is probably due to the fact that LyX generates its menus on the fly
when they are open (many things are dynamic). Is there some documentation
on how to do it properly? It already works on OS X, so it cannot be so
difficult...

[Bug 261312] Re: LyX should recommend cm-super for vector fonts

2010-10-29 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
This happens because by default LyX follows LaTeX default. In this
sense, what you complain about is a LaTeX bug. The choice has bee made
to stay with whatever LaTeX does for defaults. While people used to
workprocessors complain, people who exchange documents with other LaTeX
users are happier.

Another solution besides what you proposed is to use "Almost European"
fonts. This is a virtual fonts that uses the postscript OT1 fonts that
ship with LaTeX to emulate postscript T1 fonts. This avoids the overhead
of either cm-super of lmodern.

Finally, you can also use the "Save as Document Defaults" button of the
Document Settings dialog to select your current settings (font,
paper...) as default for new document.

[Bug 598696] [NEW] instantaneous kernel freeze on intel server

2010-06-25 Thread Jean-Marc Le Peuvedic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic-pae

Similar to bug #508699 but occurs on a server system with integrated intel
graphics instead of a workstation with VIA chrome.
Similar symptoms of freeze without crash reports nor significant messages in
the log files. Mainly detected by loss of ssh session and confirmed by no
response to ping. Observed once an interactive graphic session freeze, closely
resembling bug #508699.

Freeze happens with gdm stopped and X turned off.

Workaround: run 2.6.31-rt from lucid repos instead of 2.6.32.

[Bug 508699] Re: [K8M800] Xorg freeze / Kernel 2.6.32-10-generic freeze

2010-06-25 Thread Jean-Marc Le Peuvedic
Dear All,

I operate a server (no keyboard, no mouse, integrated intel video
i82G33/G31). When I switched from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS the server
stated to freeze after a few minutes of operation. Normal access to the
command line is via SSH. On learning from the web about the intel
driver/X problem I shut gdm down intending to finish the configuration
of other services (this is a SAMBA and LAMP server). The server still
froze after a few minutes or hours. I only observed one case of desktop
freeze since I only ran one interactive graphic session.

I downgraded the kernel from (lucid-updates 2.6.32-22) to (lucid
2.6.32-21). The same kernel mentioned above (i386 generic-pae in my
case). The sitation improved: the server stayed online for several
hours, but never lasted a day. I reenabled KMS, and generally applied
all the recipes listed in the Ubuntu.fr forum which do not degrade 3D
performance. I installed more recent intel 2.9.1 drivers to no effect.
With KMS the i915 driver stays loaded all the time and cannot be
unloaded, but with gdm stopped and no interactive session it shouldn't
have been exercized significantly.

The solution came from the installation of lucid's 2.6.31-rt kernel,
which works for me, as it worked for Thomas (post #54).

Other symptoms are similar: no oops recoverable, no crash file, nothing
relating to a serious kernel problem in any log file. I did not try to
store log file remotely though. The freeze seems to be instantaneous,
but it is not related directly to graphical session activity.

But again, booting on the same machine with Xubuntu 8.04, libdvdread3
and libdvdcss2, everything works just fine.

Hope you can help,

best regards, Jean-Marc

[Bug 187540] Re: Gnome-panel freeze when 8 windows are open when the panel is vertical/"non-expanded horizontal"

2010-03-18 Thread Jean-Marc Bourguet
@Sebastien, if I can do anything more than the two patches above, just
say so. For the record, I'm using the second one since I wrote it.

[Bug 504235] [NEW] fontconfig strange selection

2010-01-07 Thread Jean-Marc Bourguet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fontconfig

I've the Adobe Type 1 "basic types" package which includes Helvetica and
Helvetica Narrow fonts.

I think I've installed them correctly:
$ fc-list | grep Helveti
Helvetica:style=Narrow Bold
Helvetica:style=Oblique
Helvetica:style=Narrow
Helvetica:style=Bold
Helvetica:style=Narrow Oblique
Helvetica:style=Regular
Helvetica:style=Narrow Bold Oblique
Helvetica:style=Bold Oblique

but

$ fc-match Helvetica:Oblique
hvno.pfb: "Helvetica" "Narrow Oblique"

I'd have expected hvo__.pfb, "Hevetica" "Oblique". And worse, fc-
match -s doesn't even present the correct result in its list.
