[Bug 463168] Re: gnome-panel crashes with a BadPixmap X error

2010-01-03 Thread Jedasothi
I just got it with VLC. I have insufficient disk space to load gnome
debugging symbols.

I recommend compiling with the
-ggdb1
compiler flag. That puts in enough symbol information for a backtrace.
I recommend compiling all GCC compiled software with debugging symbols until
completion of beta stage.

[Bug 502092] [NEW] false report that The specified process does not belong to you.

2010-01-01 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I have only witnessed this in one case and can reproduce it reliably. I
have verified that I the process to submit the report on and ubuntu-bug
run as the same user.

To reproduce:
On a Gnome system, run konqueror, which hangs or loops while consuming all CPU
it can.
run ubuntu-bug with PID of konqueror as parameter.

Running the processes with a different group causes this bug to appear.
The shells from which konqueror and ubuntu-bug were started were running with
different groups.
To reproduce, change your active group in one shell using the newgrp command.

[Bug 502097] Re: konqueror freezes on start, consuming full CPU

2010-01-01 Thread Jedasothi
I found out that this only happened when starting with the
filemanagement
profile.
The reason was a dependency on dolphin which is not handled well.
dolphin was absent.
Installing dolphin fixed the problem.
Ideally, konqueror would report the problem rather than hang silently consuming
CPU when dolphin is not available.

[Bug 498796] [NEW] Windows are not displayed when client application is run

2009-12-20 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: maximus

When starting a client application, the client runs but its window is not
displayed and it does not have a taskbar entry.
The 'ps' command shows that the client is running.

I estimate this bug happens at random approximately 1/100 of client starts.
I have been unable to associate the occurrence with any activity or event on
the computer, such as other applications running or prior occurrence of a
different bug.

In fact, i think (I am uncertain) that maximus reports the window as openned in
.xsession-errors. Here is a sample:
** (maximus:2103): DEBUG: Window opened: res_name=Grpn -- class_name=grpn

[Bug 494639] Re: panel icon has visibility and poor contrast against some backgrounds

2009-12-15 Thread Jedasothi
I think it is clear that adding a border is a solution to the usability problem
i describe. It sounds like you find it an undesirable one due to the impact on
icon style.
I certainly appreciate(d) the advantages of the 'glyph icon' solution.

According to your description of the intents of humanity-dark,
by using a grey taskbar, i guess i was using the icons 'out of spec'.
In that context, the problem with humanity-Dark is not so grave.
Even with the task bar black, contrast is sufficiently low in some viewing
conditions, that i suggest brightening.

Whether it would be part of Humanity or not, i think there is a need for
a solution for the general problem of a varying background colour,
because i don't think there will ever be sufficient coordination among
icons provided by independent applications. That general problem can be
addressed with borders. With Humanity, 2 use cases are covered. That is
a choice with reason behind it and is better than some other icons.

As a side note, if a reader should ever consider making a version with
borders, you can have the borders have a transparency gradient — if it
suits your sense of style.

Review/Summary according to self:
Use case in bug was invalid.
nonetheless the problem of insufficient contrast is present, even under valid
viewing conditions.
Want of a general solution is 'wish list' and not necessarily part of this bug
report, because Humanity is not intended to provide that general solution.

[Bug 494616] [NEW] Antique clock face shows 4 as IV rather than IIII .

2009-12-09 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cairo-clock

Theme files for a patch are attached.

Select theme antique.
In the buggy version, the position of value 4 is represented as IV.
Correct is .

In traditional Roman numerals 4 is not IV . It seems the
subtractive principle did not apply to V.

I also viewed a large Book on antique Clocks . With exception of one of
the more recent clocks, from the 19th century, all which use Roman
numbers represent 4 as .

I corresponded with the original author of the theme. He informed me
that he had submitted the theme to the cairo-clock author with a correct
clock face but that it was altered by the cairo clock author. He also
sent me the correct theme files, which are attached.

[Bug 494630] [NEW] panel icon has visibility and poor contrast against some backgrounds

2009-12-09 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

See the attached image from a screen shot.

In this example, a panel background color of a mid gray is chosen on the
basis of being a good medium background colour against which bright,
dark, or hues can be rendered. The icon for ubuntuone-client is poorly
visible.

A solution is to include a border for the lines in the icon so the icon
is well visible independent of what the user has for a panel background
colour.

[Bug 494639] [NEW] panel icon has visibility and poor contrast against some backgrounds

2009-12-09 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

See the attached image from a screen shot.

In this example, a panel background color of a mid gray is chosen on the
basis of being a good medium background colour against which bright,
dark, or hues can be rendered. The icon for gnome-volume-control-applet
is poorly visible.

A solution is to include a border for the lines in the icon so the icon
is well visible independent of what the user has for a panel background
colour.

[Bug 487745] [NEW] Adding IP address with scope link creates global address

2009-11-24 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: iproute

Adding an IP address with scope of link creates a global address
rather than link local address.

To reproduce bug run

inet6 ::4/64 scope global tentative

[Bug 461709] [NEW] Mouse clicks on menus do not function or are displaced

2009-10-27 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

I am unsure whether this is the proper package. I have tested 2
dependent packages.

In Poe (package poe.app), i am unable to clicking on menu entries has no
effect.

In addressmanager.app , when i first ran it, a click on the menu
activated the entry about 4 entries below where i clicked instead of the
entry i clicked. This was also true for clicking on the title bar.
After much clicking, the clicks became correctly located on the menu,
even after closing and restarting the app.

I speculate that these bugs have a common cause, although i am
especially uncertain now that AddressManager is correctly handling the
clicks on the menu and Poe still does not.

For both apps, I can summon the menu by double clicking on the icon.
The keyboard functions for entries Hide Quit.

[Bug 461723] [NEW] Connection failed, reconnecting repeatedly

2009-10-27 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

See the .xsession-errors log.

I think the entries of
Usage:program_name [address][:port]
may be related. I have seen the same error message output to the console
profusely when running grip.

I have not, run any X Windows applications as another user in this session.
There is no process named gnome-settings-daemon running.
I am only running apps on localhost.
I have not noticed errors which i associate with a missing
gnome-settings-daemon.
Gnome applications seem to be able to acquire their settings as long as the
user logged into the console is the same as the one running the application.

[Bug 454941] Re: thinks that package information is 8 days old even after updating an hour ago (aptitude does not write update-stamp)

2009-10-27 Thread Jedasothi
So, if there were any error produced in updating one of the
repositories, the results would be as described:

update-manager would correctly find and install updates, but not update
the time stamp and so continuously report that updating is needed?

I no longer recall, but it could be that I had a repository at that time which
produced a non-fatal error.
Around that time I had a local repository which I think produced the error that
signatures or checksums could not be verified. I would expect myself to
disable that repo try the update again, but perhaps I did not. It would
perfectly explain the symptoms and seems the most likely explanation to me.

[Bug 461723] Re: Connection failed, reconnecting repeatedly

2009-10-27 Thread Jedasothi
Yes, it reproduces consistently, whether the X Server is started by GDM or
xinit. The following 1 line .xinitrc reproduces it:
exec /usr/bin/gnome-session --sync

The exec and --sync are surely superfluous.

netstat -anp
after booting shows no port being occupied by a settings daemon; yet
tail -f .xsession-errors
shows new attempts about 1/(5s) .

running
$ gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon
** (gnome-settings-daemon:12817): WARNING **: Failed to acquire
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon
** (gnome-settings-daemon:12817): WARNING **: Could not acquire name

Exits immediately with status 0.
I think those warnings are an important clue.

wireshark shows repeated attempts on addresses 127.0.0.1 ::1 to
connect to TCP port 4713, which is unoccupied response is RST.

These problems happen even if the iptables firewall is deactivated as shown by
iptables -L

[Bug 461723] Re: Connection failed, reconnecting repeatedly

2009-10-27 Thread Jedasothi
Since it seems to me usually desirable that the .xsession-errors recieve
endless Warning entries about something that is not an error, I will
convert this entry to 'Wish List'. Endless noise obscures true
problems.

Are other errors and messages related or separate? such as:

 - gnome-settings-daemon not running.

 - profuse Usage:program_name [address][:port] messages. It seems
something is being called incorrectly.

[Bug 454941] Re: thinks that package information is 8 days old even after updating an hour ago

2009-10-26 Thread Jedasothi
Previously, when closing the main window and re opening it, it would
still show outdated information. It may be that it was running in the
'background' and shown in the panel and not shut down. I no longer
recall.

Right now, i do not have it start upon login. Starting it manually, it
shows 'updated 3 days ago' which is probably the last time i used
update-manager. The last update via aptitude was an hour or few ago, so
i guess tracking updates by other programs is unimplemented.

Here is a conjecture: i had aptitude running and then update-manager
attempted update but could not due to resources being locked. After
closing Aptitude, update-manager had some invalid state information
which prevented it from operating properly.

[Bug 451600] [NEW] keyboard layout variant chosen in install is not applied for the X server

2009-10-14 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

This functionality is working in the Debian Debian installer, but not
Ubuntu Karmic Koala.

I select dvorak at the boot prompt and then later during the installation
dvorak or dvorak international.
When installation is complete, the GDM login is QWERTY layout.
I believe the VTs are dvorak, however.

I guess that the major category is used but the variant (Dvorak) is lost.
Maybe this is due to no longer having an xorg.conf file and the information not
otherwised being passed to or retrieved by the X server.

[Bug 449309] [NEW] PrivilegedActionException occurred while loading cursors.properties

2009-10-12 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

The error

java.lang.RuntimeException: cannot load system cursor: CopyDrop.32x32
Caused by: java.awt.AWTException: Exception: class
java.security.PrivilegedActionException null occurred while loading:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/images/cursors/cursors.properties

See attachment for full stack trace.
appears where running the same application with Sun JRE does not produce the
error.
I find a CopyDrop file is at
openjdk-6-jre-lib:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/images/cursors/motif_CopyDrop32x32.gif
with same path in sun-java6-jre.

The software run to produce this error is available at
http://www.sweethome3d.eu/download.jsp
I created a JAr from the source. You can also use the pre-made JAr which you
can run like this:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java -jar SweetHome3D-2.1.jar

I specified openjdk-6-jre-lib as the package to report a bug in to
apport-cli and it changed it to openjdk-6 . Is that desired behavior?

I did not find this bug at the bug site
https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/
There were some matches for PrivilegedAction at
http://bugs.sun.com/
but I did not identify any as being this bug.

[Bug 410867] Re: package ubuntustudio-default-settings 0.26 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-10-10 Thread Jedasothi
The entry
set -e
in the script causes this sort of problem to be more grave than it needs to be.
It prevents using package management at a high level even for other packages
when 1 package has a problem.
I think the
set -e
should be removed should rarely be part of removal scripts.

[Bug 447433] [NEW] consistently reports that USB storage needs to be formatted, even after formatting

2009-10-09 Thread Jedasothi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Starting with a USB stick without a valid partition table, I selected the
device and click the Format button. The device is then partitioned. I see the
partition listed with sfdisk -l , for example as type
W95 FAT32 (LBA)
usb-creator never recognizes the device as formatted. Once I did see that the
partition on the device was listed in the device selection frame. Formatting
the partition caused it to disappear in the frame. It is unable to recognize
the device as formatted, even upon restart of the program.

[Bug 442295] [NEW] Reference Name not found

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dia2code

A diagram is created with named reference.
dia2code reports
warning: unnamed association between ClassB and ClassA

4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//evdev_drv.so(EvdevMBEmuWakeupHandler+0x59)
