[Bug 264287] Re: zoom keys dont work in my microsoft natural keyboard 4000
Hi folks, I don't know if anyone associated with this bug still cares, but for those who have one of these MS keyboards with the slider control (labeled 'Zoom'), it seems the slider is actually recognized as joystick buttons, using the autoloaded joydev.ko kernel module (at least this is the case with my model 1031 'Digital Media Pro Keyboard). Mine is recognized as having 41 buttons (don't know where this comes from, but okay) and when I push the slider up button 25 is reported as pressed, and button 26 when pushed down (this is in Jaunty KDE Keyboard Mouse - Joystick under System Settings). I'm not really sure what the state of actual joystick support is in KDE or X desktop usage in general, but thought this might give someone an idea. Hi Leann, Sorry again for taking so long to get back; unfortunately this laptop's home is about an hour and a half from where I live, so I can only work on it when I get the chance to get back here. Anyway... I have tried the latest kernel available in Intrepid now, the Jaunty Live CD (built 20090221), and building the latest drivers from w.k.o...all yield the same result with no apparent change. If there's anything else you can think of I'm open to ideas! I will be here until about 2:30pm EST today then I'll have to return home. [Bug 154647] Re: Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi
Reverting to the last available 2.6.24 kernel from Hardy brings this back to a much more usable state, so it looks like maybe this could be a regression in 2.6.27 (not sure of the exact package revision...whatever the latest image is that's available in Intrepid)? -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 154647] Re: Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi
Hi Leann, Sadly, this now seems worse than ever with 2.6.27 under Intrepid...it has now become difficult for the card to even associate with either AP. I'd like to reiterate that switching to a VC has the greatest effect on this- that is, while switched to X's vt/i.e., while actually looking at X, wifi network access is unusably slow. Switching to a VC while, for example, a page is loading in Firefox, results in network access becoming perfectly normal... when I come back to X, the page has loaded fine. If I had a terminal window open with a ping running against my LAN's router, the ping times are horrible if I'm in X (most packets lost, ones that made it are several hundred ms or greater), but again if I switch to a VC, when I come back, the ping times from when I went to a VC are normal, about 2ms. Thanks a lot for keeping this open and sorry for having taken so long to report back on this! ** Attachment added: dmesg.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20750516/dmesg.log -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: emerald I was scrolling through the xorg logfile using less in the gnome- terminal when emerald abruptly died (though I don't believe the two are related; emerald has died several times before with no apparent rhyme or reason; the only reason I hadn't reported the bug previously was because the debugging symbols for emerald were not complete so the backtrace was useless) I am using the 'Blueray' v0.3 theme. Modifications I've made via Emerald themer 0.5.2 are: change the window shadows to a more cyan-ish color, change the titlebar text font to 'Swift' 12 point (I am uncertain what package this font is part of if it is not part of a default installation). I believe emerald died unpredictably before these alterations and with other themes as well, however. It doesn't rotate to a non-existant face, it rotates to one of your currently available faces. [Bug 154647] Re: Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi
I have since tried using a Gutsy final live CD to see if it locked up the laptop hard a few seconds after X starts like the installed copy and it hadn't, so I backed up the contents and installed a fresh copy of Gutsy (prior install was an upgrade from Feisty). I can now confirm this bug occurs with the bcm43xx driver as well, albeit (sometimes) not quite as extreme - it sometimes manages to eke out about 10kbytes/sec. The same circumstances appear to have the same effects as well; e.g., switching to a vc while a download is in progress allows it to operate normally - switch back to X and the download has finished or progressed much more quickly. I have also tried extracting firmware for the Broadcom driver from a few different locations - the one suggested by the GUI for Broadcom restricted wifi drivers (which is what I've been using all along), and the bcmwl5.sys from my other Presario (which uses a 4318 instead of the 4311 rev 1 this laptop uses) and at the moment, while far from perfect, the latter is quite an improvement - downloading a large video from my Myth backend, for example, downloads at an average of 60-80kbytes/sec. Again, if I switch to a vc, (or watch this video using mplayer as it is downloading - hmmm), the transfer speed increases dramatically. This may of course be a fluke and possibly revert at any time, but at the moment appears to be a step in the right direction. -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 117892] Re: i810/intel xorg drivers hang Inspiron 1100
I am not 100% certain this is the same bug, however, I have a Compaq Presario C550/C552US running Gutsy w/2.6.22-14. It uses an i945GM and has the exact same problem (as described in the first post - box hard locks right after gdm starts and the busy cursor displays for a moment before locking up). My only workaround so far has been to use 2.6.20-15 from Feisty, and use the i810 server instead of the intel server. Interestingly, in 2.6.22-14, if I boot into recovery/single mode and start the X server by hand (startx) _as root_ instead of my user via gdm, all is fine (though it seems to have an adverse effect on the wifi for some reason). Okay I tried: acpi=noirq - no apparent effect irqpoll - Seemed to have a positive impact at first (took until the 24th ping packet to get anything - all rtt's were ~ 1ms after that; but that delay may well have been the wifi driver not being warmed up yet despite stating it was associated and had received an address. I switched that gnome-terminal to full screen (F11) and took a look at dmesg's output, came out of fullscreen, attempted again and this time it was back to its latent self again. I tried a second cold boot (power cycle) with this kernel option again and it seemed to have no effect this time (poor latency) pci=nomsi - no apparent effect pci=routeirq - no apparent effect noapic - no apparent effect -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 154647] Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi
Public bug reported: This is my post from the forums (I have reported this as a bug now because I believe I have found a partial solution): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=579941 Subj: Networking (wifi) latent/unusable in X but fine in a vc? I have a rather strange problem. I have a Compaq C550 laptop (C552US) with integrated WiFi. I have upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy. I am using ndiswrapper. The computer boots up, the WiFi card associates with my AP and receives an address. Any network access is unusably slow. Pinging either of my APs, I can see that most packets are dropped and those that are returned have a very long rtt (mostly 1-2sec+). However, here's the kicker: if I switch to a vc (using Ctrl+Alt+F#; not logging out or killing X), network access is slick as it should be, with no or minimal dropped packets. [EDIT: Incoming traffic is fine as well; e.g., if I ping this machine from another the latency is normal). A bit of a longshot, but I thought perhaps somehow the video card was assigned overlapping resources (io, irq, etc) with the WiFi card - it is not. Please note I am still using the 2.6.20-15 kernel from Feisty. I wanted to use the 2.6.22-14 as shipped with Gutsy so I could try the in-kernel bcm43xx driver, but unfortunately that has an even nastier still problem: the machine locks up hard at a somewhat random time after the gdm login screen [edit: using either the i810 or intel X server] (usually after logging in). The WiFi is an internal miniPCI Broadcom 4311 (according to lspci, rev 01) Video is i945GM. I have also tried removing as many unnecessary kernel modules as possible and tried with and without the 915resolution util. Cheers, Jesse EDIT: I got this working. I can confirm this appears to be a conflict of sorts with the intel X server; I thought for sure I had tried this but apparently not: using the legacy i810 server instead solves this problem for me. Yes I had tried removing the module earlier thinking the same thing; no effect. I was afraid it would come to a wall because of the use of the Windows driver. I would certainly like to see if the problem persists using the bcm43xx drivers instead but unfortunately this card will not work with them in 2.6.20-15. -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'd also like to just add a little more fuel: If I, for example, attempt to visit a site in Firefox, it will sit unsuccessfully attempting to push packets out. However, if I switch to a vc and return to X the site will have loaded (consistently reproducible). -- Possible severe conflict between intel X server and Broadcom wifi https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/154647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 152654] Re: Xorg (i810) crashes on startup after upgrade to Gutsy
I have a similar problem with a Compaq C550. The laptop hardlocks at a somewhat random time after arriving at the gdm login screen (usually once logged in). This is rather inconclusive, but the problem also seems to be accelerated by keyboard or touchpad input. Interestingly, if the laptop is booted in single-user mode (=recovery mode at grub boot screen) and the X server started by hand (startx as root), it never locks up. This only occurs using the current 2.6.22-14 kernel. When booting Gutsy with the Feisty 2.6.20-15 kernel, the problem does not appear (drm module - X server?) Contrary to Petri's fortune, specifying either the i810 or intel server in xorg.conf does not seem to make a difference. [Bug 149460] Successful rotation to nonexistent face
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz Description: Rotating to a nonexistent/unallocated face using the Desktop Cube is successful (i.e., the cube consists of only four faces, but switching to face 12 with the 'Rotate to Face 12' hotkey attempts to anyway) Expected: Attempts to switch to a cube face that doesn't exist should be ignored Steps to reproduce: Test case has Desktop Cube with four faces Enable 'Rotate Cube' plugin Using the hotkey, attempt to switch to a cube face that doesn't exist (default is Ctrl+F#; e.g., Ctrl+F12 for face 12) This also appears to produce a fully transparent borderless window in the upper left corner of the screen on top of the cube, occupying about 40% of the width and height of a 1680x1050 desktop. Contents shown through this window have a slightly distorted perspective. This can be observed when rotating the cube with the mouse (also when rotating to specific face using the hotkey, though it is more difficult to see because of the speed of changing faces). Edit: The second part of this bug is erroneous; I had inadvertently enabled two outputs in the General Options Display Settings: one that was 1680x1050, one that was 640x480, both at +0+0.
