[Bug 2083744] [NEW] Window Maximized is not persistent for some apps after startup

2024-10-05 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

For example Slack:

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

- run slack
- maximize window
- close slack
- click on the icon tray
- slack is run not maximized
- resize window manually
- close slack
- open slack - window position and size is restored
- click maximize, close slack
- open slack - all the size is reset

The same behavior applies to Chromium (not Chrome), SmartGit

[Bug 2083742] [NEW] Omnipresent Busy cursor on some apps startup

2024-10-05 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

For most of the programs when I start them up annoying busy cursor is
spinning around ~20 seconds on the right dash and top tray area.

You can stop spinning it if you manually resize the window or you may wait as I
said around 20 seconds.
Fortunately it's seems like annoying but visual bug, you can actually run apps
or click tray icons and they will be run when this busy cursor is still spinning

1) Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

2) It's a case for Chrome, Chromium, Slack, Telegram | Not a case for
PhpStorm, Opera, Firefox, Thunderbird, ubuntu related apps like
settings, nautilus, terminal

3) When app starts up - replace busy cursor to normal cursor in a few
seconds

[Bug 2083741] [NEW] On some of restarts black theme is not applied and nautilus, terminal, system-monitor are loading way slow

2024-10-05 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

On some of restarts black theme is not applied and nautilus, terminal,
system-monitor are loading way slow.

After 2 minutes it's getting normal and it happens not on all the time.

1) Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

3) Normal working of the nautilus, terminal, system-monitor

4) Startup of terminal, nautilus takes long time. They are started in
the incorrect theme. Busy cursor is being displayed all the time.

I've recorded a video, where you can see this behavior

[Bug 2064177] Re: Window borders and shadows missing from GTK3 dialogs (if autologin is enabled and Xorg is used)

2024-10-04 Thread Joe
Having exactly the same issue with multiple apps, thank God somebody
suggested pressing WIN + holding middle button to resize the window
without even getting a cursor.

The more I use Ubuntu 24, the more I want to get rid of it, so much
bugs...

I don't know whether it's a same bug, but Maximizing application doesn't
persist on close/open.
Like Slack, SmartGit...

Update: we've had this deployed at scale since my last comment and
haven't noticed any such issues. I don't know if this information will
be of use to anyone, but at least our experience with this patch has
been a good one.

I would give this a try but the iwlwifi module specifies a minversion of
-17 (and a maxversion of 17 as well, but that's not a problem here). I
tried rebuilding with a lowered minversion that would allow loading a
-16 firmware but that didn't go well. I didn't capture the errors since
I didn't think it was particualrly useful, but on my 6.11.0-rc3 kernel
trying to load the -16 firmware resulted in a failure loop wherre the
device was brought up, an error occurred and the device was immediately
destroyed. By the time I managed to allow a -17 to load and the device
successfully came up it was wlan126.

Support for -16 firmware is all the way back in 4.8.0 [1]. I did go all
the way back and built a 4.7.10 (last in that series that I saw) but
unfortunately that's so far back that my system wasn't able to do
direct-boot. That's where I put debugging on pause for yesterday and
thought I would follow up here and see if there were suggestions of a
more efficient way to test this instead of trying out a 2016 kernel.

Thanks, really apprecite any attention on this bug at all!

2024-08-15 Thread joe
Created attachment 306729
Linux kernel 6.11.0-rc3 crash log

As with the other comments, I also tested on a current kernel and
observed a crash very soon after the link became active. This is the
relevant part of the log from a 6.11.0-rc3 kernel, built today.

I'm just adding here that this is still a problem with 6.1.0 and my

[Bug 2071644] [NEW] sometimes takes ~5 seconds to _dma_fmt_to_dma_drm_fmts: assertion 'fmt != GST_VIDEO_FORMAT_UNKNOWN' failed

2024-07-01 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

since upgrading to noble, sometimes the following bit of code works
instantaneously, and sometimes it takes ~5 seconds to report:

** (gst-plugin-scanner:692358): CRITICAL **: 10:55:31.508:
_dma_fmt_to_dma_drm_fmts: assertion 'fmt != GST_VIDEO_FORMAT_UNKNOWN'
failed

code:
>>> import cv2
>>> vc = cv2.VideoCapture('/dev/video2')

when it takes a long time and reports the assertion error, I see the
following in journalctl logs (so maybe an amd/kernel bug instead of an
opencv bug? -- also fwiw am on a hybrid amd/intel system where
DRI_PRIME=1 generally activates the amd card but this should be running

[Bug 2069165] Re: Instillation Failure

2024-06-12 Thread Joe Mike Bondick
This was the solution.

sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*

I issued this command from terminal and then reinstalled. It worked.
Before, I was uninstalling from the Software Center. Something about
uninstalling from Software Center was the problem.

We were seeing this pretty frequently in production, so we rolled out
Adam's patch above and it stopped completely. Thanks for the patch :)

[Bug 2060947] Re: Warnings produced in apt upgrade processing triggers for initramfs-tools

2024-05-24 Thread joe williams
I am experiencing this as well on a fresh install of 24.04 to a blank
NVMe using the ZFS with encryption option. I see similar error messages
under the password dialog when unlocking the disk. As far as I can tell
things seem to work fine.

[Bug 2066074] Re: Backspace key above numberpad spams infinite backspace on a single press

2024-05-19 Thread Joe
Okay it looks like Lenovo uses some kind of special layer for the number
pad when working with windows.

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/494698/thinkpad-second-sticky-
backspace-key

Although that still doesn't fully explain why it works properly before
the kernel loads. I don't really know when the kernel loads or even what
it takes over from, I'm just guessing that something else is in control
for those CLI parts where there's no bug.

[Bug 2066074] Re: Backspace key above numberpad spams infinite backspace on a single press

Copied from other report

Kernel: 5.15.0-107-generic

Keyboard: 01AX120 (the integrated keyboard on the laptop)

I don't believe this is a hardware issue because the button behaves as
expected in windows and in the Arch install command line interface. Plus
the evtest output doesn't spit out the following over and over like it
does if you hold it down:

[code]
Event: time 1715974930.271262, type 4 (EV_MSC), code 4 (MSC_SCAN), value 0e
Event: time 1715974930.271262, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 14 (KEY_BACKSPACE), value 0
Event: time 1715974930.271262, -- SYN_REPORT
[/code]

I checked Driver Manager but for some reason I'm only seeing the GPU
driver options and nothing else. However, I figured out how to get the
terminal to spit out a list of all the drivers. The problem being I
don't know which one is the one I'm supposed to be interested in, so I
don't know which one to ask the terminal to give me details about.

Here's the list, which ones should I get more info on?

From what I've read, the evtest output is telling us this is a kernel
issue? Who is in charge of the kernel? I'm perfectly happy to work with
them to get to the bottom of this.

2024-05-17 Thread Joe
Copied from other report

I just tried it with Arch but I couldn't figure out how to get past the
initial setup screen. The bug doesn't exist on that initial terminal
screen in set-up. That prompted me to try typing on that temporary CLI
login that shows up when starting Mint from a full power off and the bug
does not exist there.

So recap so far:

Mint - Yes
Mint Temp CLI Login - No
Ubuntu - Yes
Arch - Maybe not?
Windows - No

Bug description

A single press on the numberpad backspace key causes the computer to
think the key is held down. The continuous backspace only stops when
another key is pressed. From playing around with a CLI program called
evtest, it seems the computer sets the key value to 1 on press but
doesn't set it to 0 on release. For other keys, a return to 0 is the
normal behavior. Evtest will repeatedly report a value of 2 if a key is
pressed and held, and it does this correctly with the numberpad
backspace. However, a single press on the numberpad backspace and then a
single press with the regular backspace shows a value of 2 for the
second key even though the first was not held.

The standard backspace key behaves as normal.
Steps to reproduce

Open a text file and populate it with text

Press the numberpad backspace

watch the cursor eat the text without your help

press any other key to stop the madness
Expected behavior

Should behave the same as the ordinary backspace
Additional information

Output from evtest on the following button combination:

[Bug 2066074] [NEW] Backspace key above numberpad spams infinite backspace on a single press

2024-05-17 Thread Joe
Public bug reported:

I'm guessing the bug is in gsd-keyboard, but I can't imagine it being
from anywhere else.

I have also submitted a bug report with the Mint team, where I found the
bug, and so I will copy all the extra information from that report in a
follow-up comment.

1) Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
2) I can't find a package version. I get variations on "N: Unable to locate
package gsd-keyboard"
3) Should behave as an ordinary key, where a single press means a single action.
4) Behaved as if the key were held down, until pressing any other key ended the
non-stop backspacing.

Note that the ordinary backspace behaves as expected. More info will be
added with additional comment.

[Bug 2055044] Re: GIMP crash at closure on systems with GLib 2.80.0 (and 2.79.x)

2024-05-14 Thread Joe Auge
By activating the proposed repository I did not get any updates for
gimp. So i installed it via

sudo apt install gimp/noble-proposed

And I can confirm, that the patch works. No more crashes while closing
Gimp. Before I had them all the time.

[Bug 2057687] Re: systemctl hibernate error: "Call to Hibernate failed: Invalid argument"

2024-05-12 Thread Joe Zendle
Can confirm that manually populating /sys/power/resume works for me as well.

to get maj:min of root partition:

$ df /
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/nvme0n1p2 121969296 33951580 81775876 30% /

ls -l /dev/nvme0n1p2
brw-rw 1 root disk 259, 2 May 12 09:47 /dev/nvme0n1p2

in this case maj:min is 259:2

[Bug 2054866] Re: package linux-headers-6.5.0-21-generic 6.5.0-21.21 failed to install/upgrade: installed linux-headers-6.5.0-21-generic package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit

2024-02-26 Thread Joe Zhou
Find the problem, it isn't a broken/unsupported DKMS module for my case.

The system's default gcc/g++ version is 13. While installing CUDA 11.8,
I used update-alternatives to change the gcc/g++ version to 11. Switch
back to gcc/g++ 13 solved this issue.

Same problem. From /var/log/dpkg.log, Ubuntu 23.10 seems to
automatically install kernel 6.5.0-21-generic today. However, it fails
with a half-installed status.

[Bug 1971744] [NEW] external monitor static image after unlocking session

2022-05-05 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

Occasionally after unlocking a locked gnome session, the image on my
external monitor is "frozen" -- it displays the unlocked desktop as of
the lock/unlock time, but does not update (no mouse cursor etc).
Started noticing this post-jammy release.

Unplugging and replugging the monitor fixes it. Internal laptop display
does not have the issue.

[Bug 1970935] [NEW] File Association With Files in tempdir broken

2022-04-29 Thread joe mcverry
Public bug reported:

The bug has something to do with the file associations and files in the
tempdir directory. It started right after I upgraded from Ubuntu 21.04
to 21.10.

I have PDF files associated with Firefox. When I double-click them
from, say, Thunderbird (my mail program), the file should automatically
be loaded and displayed by Firefox. Firefox will load the file into the
tempdir, a subdirectory in the /tmp directory. Which the program does,
but when it tries to open the file Firefox reports that it can't find
the file. This error also occurs when a drag-and-drop operation is used
from the same directory. The error does not occur if the File->Open
operation is used in Firefox.

If the file is in one of my directories and I double-click the file
icon, Firefox opens the file without a problem.

So the association breaks if the file is in the tempdir directory or for
this case /tmp/pid-15374

[Bug 1968565] Re: unity login don't work, login screen appear again after a few seconds

2022-04-15 Thread joe
Sometimes I got an 'Oh no' error screen with an logout button, maybe
every second or third time, see attachment.

Same behavior when installing ubuntu-unity-desktop instead of unity.
Selecting gdm3 or lightdm makes no difference.

ubuntu 21.10 works fine...
Xubuntu 22.04 beta also, so there is a workaround :)

With Kubuntu 22.04 beta and Lubuntu 22.04 beta it works too, but I've
some display errors on the screen with the Intel graphics adapter, but
only when using unity. Also no errors about this in the logs.

[Bug 1968565] [NEW] unity login don't work, login screen appear again after a few seconds

2022-04-11 Thread joe
Public bug reported:

I'm unable to log in to unity desktop, when selecting it on the login page.
Wayland and Xorg login works fine.
No traceback, no crashfile.

Same behavior on my workstation, even with only the Intel processor
Graphics installed.

I have installed a fresh minimal installation, w/o network access.
7:42 rebooted
7:43 login using wayland with network access to install unity by 'apt update'
and 'apt install unity'
7:46 power off
7:49 start w/o network access
7:50 login to unity, without success
7:51 login to tty3 to call 'apport-cli -f -p unity --save unity.apport'
later create the bug report on my workstation by 'ubuntu-bug unity.apport'

var/log/gdm3/ is empty, no ~/.xsession-errors

I'm no programmer, have only basic knowledge with Xorg and no with wayland.
Will attache a tar-file from /var/log/

[Bug 1967813] [NEW] git config pull.rebase not observed

2022-04-04 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

I have pull.rebase=true and pull.ff=only set up in my global git config:

```
[pull]
ff = only
rebase = true
```

however in jammy, when I git pull with a local commit, I get the following
error:
```
fatal: Not possible to fast-forward, aborting.
```

doing a git pull --rebase does the right thing (but should not be necessary
with this config?):
```
Successfully rebased and updated refs/heads/main.
```

In impish the pull.rebase appeared to be observed properly.

drm/i915: Fix DBUF bandwidth vs. cdclk handling

Make the dbuf bandwidth min cdclk calculations match the spec
more closely. Supposedly the arbiter can only guarantee an equal
share of the total bandwidth of the slice to each active plane
on that slice. So we take the max bandwidth of any of the planes
on each slice and multiply that by the number of active planes
on the slice to get a worst case estimate on how much bandwidth
we require.

Yeah I was confused that the built kernel versions were in the v5.13-rc
range, but according to `git tag --contains

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/6d7a793aabf31d7ba2b16fc13a94ccf0b90e4be0)
v5.14-rc1 is the first tag that has this commit in it?

When PSR is enabled it handles DP_SDP_VSC, changing revision and all
the other fields as necessary.
It can also enabled and disable this SDP as needed without a full
modeset.

So here masking DP_SDP_VSC bit when previous and future state PSR
enabled, it will still be checked when comparing the asked state
to what was programmed to hardware.

Was the Precision 5530 2-in-1 version of this machine ever certified?
don't know if it would have the exact same issue but its the same
chipset.

In the meantime I'm attempting to bisect the mainline kernel to find the
commit that broke this.

[Bug 1965968] Re: post jammy update, black/flickering screen on boot

2022-03-22 Thread Joe Barnett
kernel parameter intel_idle.max_cstate=4 does not help.

Things do work properly if I boot with the external display plugged in
to begin with.

It does appear that blindly typing the encrypted disk password still
"works" and gdm does end up starting behind the black screen, but the
display does not fix itself until plugging in an external monitor.

booting with kernel 5.13.0-35 does not exhibit the bug (but uses the
previously configured ubuntu-gnome plymouth graphics instead of the new
spinner ones).

[Bug 1965968] [NEW] post jammy update, black/flickering screen on boot

2022-03-22 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

After initial jammy upgrade things were working fine, but after a recent
update the machine boots to a blank screen. There are occasional
purplish flickers that seem to correspond with keypresses, but even
blindly typing the encrypted disk password doesn't appear to advance the
boot process to gdm.

Plugging in an external monitor does fix the issue and allow boot to
proceed, but obviously doesn't help if not near an external monitor.

[Bug 1965648] [NEW] Autorotate initiates, but doesn't reset

2022-03-19 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

In jammy I can get mutter's auto-rotate to switch to portrait mode
("right-up") by rotating the device (this only worked in impish if I
installed the autorotate gnome-shell extension).

However, putting it back into "normal" orientation doesn't put the
screen back in landscape mode. Flipping it around ("left-up") does swap
to the reverse portrait mode, but still can't get back to "normal"
afterward.

running `monitor-sensor` does show the accelerometer orientation change
events (including the "normal" ones) triggering properly, just the
desktop doesn't respond.

Plugging in an external monitor does seem to trigger the desktop to go
back to normal landscape mode.

[Bug 1965638] [NEW] Can't drag to reorder tabs

2022-03-19 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from impish to jammy, seeing the following behavior in
firefox when trying to reorder tabs by clicking and dragging them:

1) in the .deb firefox, firefox will crash most of the time, but
sometimes reorder successfully

2) in the snap firefox, firefox will not register the drag (nothing will
happen). Following attempting to drag the tab, the next click in
firefox is discarded/ignored and things like mouse wheel scrolls don't
work until firefox is clicked in

[Bug 1892369] Re: Impossible to skip integrity test for ubuntu-server 20.04.1 iso

2022-02-25 Thread Joe Breu
We're in the process of installing 20.04 on machines at the end of a
very long VPN so the large ISO size is a real pain. To work-around the
integrity check I cracked the ISO open and replaced md5sum.txt with my
own that covered just the autoinstall files I wanted to track. I know
this isn't a permanent solution but it worked for us to remove up to 2
hours of re-installation time from our process.

[Bug 1937019] Re: FIDO2 tokens not supported on this build

2022-02-04 Thread Joe Richey
Note that this also means that TPM2 support also doesn't work with
cryptsetup-enroll (for similar reasons to the FIDO2 support).

The fix in Debian (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=991129) also fixes TPM2 support. Once Ubuntu 21.10
picks up that change, we should be able to use TPM2 and FIDO2 keys with
cryptsetup-enroll.

[Bug 1950925] Re: alt-tab doesnt work anymore after upgrade to 21.10

2021-11-22 Thread Joe
Hi all,

This also affects me, starting with the update to 21.04 and continuing
with the 21.10 update. alt&tab does nothing, super&tab switches between
applications. I haven't installed any Gnome extensions.

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-applications
['Tab']

~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-windows
['Tab']

Thank you for the work!!

-Joe

[Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2021-11-18 Thread Joe-xenotropic
For anyone needing a fix for nonfunctional alt-tab switching, at least
for Ubuntu/Gnome you can remap in keyboard shortcuts to have the "direct
windows switching", which by default is alt-esc, to be instead alt-tab.
It is slightly different behavior -- more visual noise -- but fulfills
the same essential function.

[Bug 1942174] Re: Button to enable VNC desktop sharing missing in settings menu

2021-11-02 Thread Joe Smith
I would settle for a console command that install VNC and makes sure it
starts on boot, before the login manager and stays running even if it
crashes or some for some random reason.

Unfortunately it's not as simple as "apt install vnc" for some obscure
historical reason

Also it would be great if instead of VNC, there was a way to do the same
thing but with the new level of performance expect by the likes of
nvidia gamestream / steam steamlink and wireless displays like WiDi and
MS-MICE. It's clearly the future of remote control of desktop, but the
future isn't on linux yet !

For sshd, at least that should be as easy as sudo apt install sshd ; rc-
update add sshd default or whatever the current syntax is to add
services to boot. That one is a little easier since it's not related to
any running x windows server

[Bug 1949248] [NEW] cockpit packages are not at the same version

2021-10-29 Thread Joe Smith
Public bug reported:

Two cockpit packages do not show version 252-1~ubuntu20.04.1 when
installed from focal-backports.

cockpit-dashboard is version 215-1 and refuses to install on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
cockpit-machines is version 250-1~ubuntu20.04.1 which installs but does not
show any virtual machines.

Please repackage those two to have consistent version numbers.

How to reproduce: # apt info cockpit-\* | egrep 'Package:|Version:'

[Bug 1938299] Re: Unable to SSH Into Instance when deploying Impish 21.10

2021-10-07 Thread Joe Slagel
I seem to have encountered the same or similar issue in ubuntu
focal/20.04 when using the image ubuntu-minimal-2004-focal-v20210928 on
GCP. Creating a new custom GCP image using this as the base image and
running:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade -y

created a custom image that exhibited the same issues with GCP OS login.
Rebooting the VM also resolved the ssh connection issues. Placing a
hold ('apt-mark hold cloud-init') on the cloud-init package before
running the upgrade also seemed to resolve the issue.

Public bug reported:

Watching Widevine content (eg netflix, hbomax, etc) on the .deb package

[Bug 1938096] Re: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend

2021-09-03 Thread joe williams
I am experiencing the same problem. The trackpad seems laggy after
suspend. Also, it seems to commonly get "stuck" in two finger scrolling,
where after lifting one of the two fingers it stays in scrolling mode.
The only way to get it out is to tap on the trackpad randomly to, I
assume, get it to detect different finger actions.

[Bug 1939344] [NEW] Bluetooth, when turned off, does not disconnect from connected headphones

2021-08-09 Thread Joe-xenotropic
Public bug reported:

It seems like there is some sort of "disconnect" message that other
operating systems (Android, MacOS) send to all connected bluetooth
devices when the computer/phone's bluetooth system is turned off, which
Ubuntu 20.04.02LTS does not.

When I connect my headphones (Aftershokz Aeropex) to my 20.04.02LTS
Ubuntu system (running on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen), and then turn
off bluetooth entire from Ubuntu settings, the headphones act as if the
connection to its source device (i.e., the computer) has been lost
unexpectedly, exactly in the same way they would if I'd walked out of
range: they give a periodic "out of range" beep until I power-cycle
them.

If I specifically go into Ubuntu bluetooth settings and disconnect just
the headphones, then the headphones do a quick beep to acknowledge the
disconnection, and do not give "out of range" notifications.

The expected behavior, which my two main other source devices do (a
Macbook, my Android phone), is that when one turns off the bluetooth
system, the source device sends that "disconnect" message to the
headphones (headphones beep once), and there is no "out of range"
beeping afterward.

[Bug 1935604] Re: network-manager-applet: stored auto connect VPN gets changed when viewing settings

2021-07-20 Thread Joe Bauser
Attaching the patches I've used to test the fix. I've generated these
patches via `git format-patch -1 HASH` from upstream for each of the
above listed commit hashes.

[Bug 1935604] Re: network-manager-applet: stored auto connect VPN gets changed when viewing settings

2021-07-20 Thread Joe Bauser
After some experimentation I have found that applying the following
commits from the upstream 1.22 version of the pacakge to the focal/devel
branch of network-manager-applet appears to fix the bug.

1. `768eb7dfa974bd3255e0062b1e9f191b731aefbe` c-e: fix initializing
drop-down-list for connection.secondaries
2. `da6b2bb94250d8ffb218caf921c9df8c394372d4` editor: fix crash when evaluating
secondaries
3. `8183932d985e4ca7c17bafb2cbaddb1ed5d5d6b8` editor: fix vpn tree sort
parameters

(the final commit I added only to simplify my debugging, I have not
tested without it)

I have no prior experience with debian or ubuntu package contributions,
so I'm not entirely sure how to contribute these potential backported
changes as patches to the package. I would very much welcome any
suggestions.

Please note that as these patches are just backports of specific commits
from upstream they would not be necessary if the entire 1.22 version of
the package could be made to work on focal.
