[Bug 1738290] [NEW] Could not install bootloader at end of install, even after selecting manually

2017-12-14 Thread Joe Millenbach
Public bug reported:

Trying to install from a USB stick. Had Fedora 27 installed and working
before. Is on an NVMe drive if that matters. I selected the default
"delete everything, and repartition" option. Also told it to download
updates and 3rd party things (like for MP3 and WiFi). And tried to
select the two possible entries in the drop down list after it
failed...those failed too (didn't try the USB stick entry).

[Bug 1269092] [NEW] Aw Snap! from chromium-browser v31 because needs updated chromium-codecs-ffmpeg

2014-01-14 Thread Joe Millenbach
Public bug reported:

I'm on an ARM system, but I'm guessing this could happen on x86 or x64
too.

I start with a stock raring (13.04) install that does not have the
raring-updates debian package location in /etc/apt/sources.list. I
install xubuntu-desktop and chromium-browser. The last package also
installs a chromium-codecs-ffmpeg package. Without the updates I get
version 25 of the browser. I want the latest stable (v31), but
upgrading some packages breaks my graphics driver (hidden in a mesa
library I heard). So I add the raring-updates location and only upgrade
chromium-browser. This also grabbed the chromium language package,
but it did not upgrade chromium-codecs-ffmpeg. Afterwards if I try to
view google.com, about a second after the page loads I get an Aw Snap!
and the chromium log has this.

...
[24337:24337:0113/180942:VERBOSE1:ffmpeg_stubs.cc(467)] Couldn't load
av_frame_unref, dlerror() says:
[24337:24337:0113/180942:VERBOSE1:ffmpeg_stubs.cc(472)] Couldn't load

sends
[24337:24337:0113/180942:VERBOSE1:ipc_sync_channel.cc(385)] Canceling pending

...

But if I manually also upgrade chromium-codecs-ffmpeg to the latest
version I can view google.com fine. I assume this means there is a
missing dependency for the newer version of the ffmpeg codecs pack in
the current chromium-browser package. I've tried to grab dependency
information for chromium-browser below.

$ apt-cache showpkg chromium-browser

I'm not sure how to read the values listed for the version required of

the upgrade looks to be version 31 like the browser proper, and I'd
guess they should be in sync with each other.

[Bug 1248745] Re: chromedriver needs to be upgraded to v2 to work with current chromium-browser builds.

A coworker found a PPA to test this with and it let our test script run
(that worked on an x86 similar system). Would be great to release it to
regular folks too :-)

How can I test this? We'd really like this to work.

And was it correct that you changed chromium-browser, and not chromium-
driver?

[Bug 1248745] Re: chromedriver needs to be upgraded to v2 to work with current chromium-browser builds.

2013-11-10 Thread Joe Millenbach
I don't have it in front of me (at home...and this is on a work
computer), but from what I remember the original chromedriver had
version numbers that looked like the chromium build. With the current
Ubuntu binary I saw v30... which roughly matches the current Chromium
build version number on the same machine.

Current x86 chromedriver2 builds have a version like 2.6. I downloaded
my x86 files from http://chromedriver.storage.googleapis.com/index.html
- found from http://chromedriver.googlecode.com , from
https://code.google.com/p/selenium/downloads/list . There was a fork or
new code base a few months back.

This is separate from the Selenium version.

[Bug 1069930] Re: chromium-browser package lacks chromedriver binary

2013-11-06 Thread Joe Millenbach
Thanks for this, but I hit an issue that looks like
https://code.google.com/p/chromedriver/issues/detail?id=471...and the
response was ChromeDriver 1 does not work with Chrome 29. There is a
ChromeDriver2 that needs to be packaged up. I assume a new bug should
be added, but figured it might be helpful to tell the people that fixed
this old version before.

The solution in the bug is ChromeDriver 1 does not work with Chrome
29. Which means for Chromium v29 and above chromedriver2 code must be
used to make the chromium-chromedriver package. I'm trying to run on
armhf, so can't use the packaged version from Google.

I assume the new code could be grabbed from
https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/chromedriver/contributing (took
a bit of poking around through invalid links to find).

[Bug 885651] Re: fresh install of ubuntu-server fails to boot

2011-11-23 Thread Joe Millenbach
I'm installing regular desktop Ubuntu, not server, x64 from USB as I've
hit a CD media bug with this system a while ago (updated existing bug
and not fixed). My motherboard does support EFI. For me to be able to
boot from the USB media in my BIOS's boot menu I can't do a USB boot,
I must do an EFI or it might be UEFI boot. Doing a USB I get a
loop of Could not find kernel image vesamenu.c32 over and over. I
haven't filed that one or added to an existing bug as I didn't find one
the first time I looked and I'm dealing with other more important issues
on the system where I can't see the whole screen (left top missing).

[Bug 891947] Re: Desktop not completely displayed after install

2011-11-23 Thread Joe Millenbach
From USB stick (try out Ubuntu), sudo randr -q gives...

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192
DVI-I-1 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

   720x40070.1
DVI-I-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I'll attach output from inside the broken install next. I tried to
install read-edid into my USB stick, but the package doesn't exist
according to apt-get and the software center. And I don't want to apt-
get update/upgrade in case that breaks everything.

According to the Xorg.0.log file the USB stick is using the NOUVEAU
driver ('Failed to load module nvidia (module does not exist, 0)'). I
think that is probably why it works and my installed version doesn't (it
installed the proprietary driver by default). That seems bad that the
Nvidia offered driver has problems (if true).

And Grub2's menu displays correctly at what I'm guessing is the default
screen resolution. The text is super tiny compared what what I used to
see back with 10.10, which I think was using 640x480.

Randomness...I setup my system to automatically login, but it seems to

[Bug 891947] Re: Desktop not completely displayed after install

2011-11-23 Thread Joe Millenbach
Problem appears using Nvidia's driver, but not with NOUVEAU. Targeting
that package for now. Also appears in post-release updates version
aka nvidia-current-updates.

[Bug 891947] Re: Desktop not completely displayed after install

2011-11-23 Thread Joe Millenbach
Installed copy is working using the Nouveau driver. Tried to switch by
just disabling the post-release updates entry in the 3rd party drivers
applet. Rebooted and same problem. This might be because I'd created
an xorg.conf in the process of trying to fix my problem. It still
listed the nvidia driver. After switching that line to nouveau,
commenting out the options that seemed related to the proprietary
driver, and manually removing the nvidia-current package using sudo
apt-get remove nvidia-current it seems to be working as I'd expect
(whole screen displayed). Not sure all above is required, but it works
for me after doing that.

2011-11-19 Thread Joe Millenbach
Yep, I checked and the current driver version from Nvidia seemed to be
installed. I'm not sure how to install the experimental version. And
not sure how to switch to Nouveau (or if that could help). Command line
instructions are preferred.

[Bug 885651] Re: fresh install of ubuntu-server fails to boot

2011-11-18 Thread Joe Millenbach
I've hit this fairly repeatedly (always hit a grub2 error) on my system
after install. I'm doing a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu 11.10 install
where I delete the existing Ubuntu install. I've fixed it every time
with instructions from the web that had me...

Boot with install media and select try out Ubuntu
Open a terminal
Inside terminal run (first command needs to be tweaked to point at your install
partition - /dev/sda5 part)...
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

[Bug 816200] Re: can't link libmxml for 32 bit app on 64 bit system

2011-07-29 Thread Joe Millenbach
Looks like I was wrong about this already working. But it is being
worked on (here http://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/Implementation and here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MultiarchCross). Feel free to close this or use
it to justify the work :-).

Also if others need to do this you can try to use a script to install
the 32 bit versions of packages available here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474790. It worked for me when
I ended up recreating the machine so went looking for a better solution
than compile it for wrong bit size and install.

[Bug 816200] [NEW] can't link libmxml for 32 bit app on 64 bit system

2011-07-25 Thread Joe Millenbach
Public bug reported:

It appears the libmxml-dev package only installs the library for my
running system. I need to compile a 32 bit application on my 64 bit
system and the linker skips the installed libraries (.so and .a) as
they're incompatible with my object files.

I managed to manually get it to work by removing this install,
downloading their copy, adding -m32 to my CFLAGS and LDFLAGS, then
followed their install instructions (of course now 64 bit apps wouldn't
work unless I rebuilt without -m32).

I'm using 10.10 and was up to date on package updates. Was package
libmsml-dev version 2.6-1.

[Bug 637718] Re: No option to install to unformated space in simple partisioning

2011-04-10 Thread Joe Millenbach
I've hit this twice now. I dual boot Windows and shrunk my boot
partition from inside it as I tend to trust MS tools manipulating their
own partitions better. Both times I came into Ubuntu's installer and it
acted as if there was no free space on the drive and that it had to
shrink the existing boot partition.

Working around this issue was annoying also because only after manually
creating my partitions do I see a message about needing a swap
partition. Then another round of delete and recreate...

[Bug 636711] Re: 10.10 can't mount squashfs file system

2011-04-10 Thread Joe Millenbach

other systems so I trust it. I tried using it a few different times and

from a Linux Mint bug I found by Google'ing for the text. Only got
around it by installing from a USB stick.

Intel P67 chipset (SandyBridge) using an Intel 3GB SATA port, not one of
the 3rd party ports or 6GB SATA ports, for an HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L
ATA Device. Combo HDDVD/Blu-ray drive. BIOS is set to AHCI for SATA
ports. CD-R disc.

Tried booting as AHCI and UEFI to the drive in my BIOS. No difference.
