Does this means the patch from Brian Rogers is now accepted by the X.org

Oops, yes. In upstream version tab only fits contact name, whereas in new

It's not obvious what the issue is here. The only difference I can see

2009/1/22 Chris Coulson chrisccoul...@googlemail.com

Thanks Xavier. So, the answer is that the new Jaunty version actually
uses the upstream behaviour (tabs fill the whole width of the window -
screenshot 2), and the patch that Ubuntu originally carried to make the
behaviour different (screenshot 1) to the upstream behaviour has not
been accepted upstream, so Ubuntu dropped it.

Re: [Bug 316510] Re: Default sound device isn't used as default by several programs.

2009-01-14 Thread Joe_Bishop
Just a bug: no sound through device after stream has been moved. Sometimes
pavucontrol crashes after that and cannot
connect again, sometimes audio app hangs up, sometimes both work but no
sound, I haven't found any regularity yet.

2009/1/14 David Henningsson launchpad@epost.diwic.se

Linux is more complex than Windows in many cases due to the enormous
amount of configuration you can make, that is both good and bad. If you
think Linux sound is not ready, the best thing you can do is try to make
 it ready.

As for the pavucontrol utility, it will be replaced in Jaunty, so bugs
in there are not likely to be fixed unless you report them directly to
pulseaudio (www.pulseaudio.org). Pulseaudio has a lot of features but
not all of them are easily configurable through a GUI.

If removing .pulse/* helps you, then the behaviour is most likely by
Pulseaudio design (call it a design flaw if you wish).

Okay, back to the actual bug. Is the bug still that sound is being
played back through HDA-intel instead of through the Juli? And are you
saying that moving the stream in pavucontrol sometimes work and
 sometimes doesn't? Please clarify.

OMG, linux sound system is one big bug!
I made 3 bugreports yesterdau linked with sound system, it's too much!
And this buggy pulseaudio really annoy me. :(

2009/1/13 dontiego gauthier.fleu...@gmail.com

I am running 8.04 (studio) with alsa-utils-1.0.18, and still get into:

 $ asoundconf set-default-card EMU1010
 Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/bin/asoundconf, line 429, in module
exit_code(set_default_card(sys.argv[2]))
  File /usr/bin/asoundconf, line 354, in set_default_card
(j, k) = sep.split(i)
ValueError: need more than 1 value to unpack

Isn't this fix supposed to be in alsa-utils-1.0.18?
Or does it work only with intrepid?

I made the modification in Bug attachments by hand and it works, the
 affected lines were:
 sep = re.compile(r'[ ]')
 instead of
 sep = re.compile(r'[ \t]')

Just curious about why the change isn't in alsa 1.0.18.

Suggested approach works for my USB audio (but I can't call it user
friendly), but doesn't work for PCI Juli. I've spent more than a week
trying to resolve this issue: alsa configs (seems doesn't work at all),
than pulse audio gui approach (very buggy, crashes, etc), works, but not
stable and always in different way (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't).
Before this expirience I though Linux is ready, today I see it doesn't.

[Bug 316510] [NEW] Default device isn't used as default by several programs.

2009-01-12 Thread Joe_Bishop
Public bug reported:

I have two soundcards:
1) ESI Juli@ (used as default, snd-ice1724, no microphone input)
2) HDA Intel (snd-hda-intel)
Juli is set as default through /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Everything is OK with mplayer, flash, gstreamer apps are also OK.
Some apps, like empathy, works well with gnome sound settings. I mean, they
used ESI Juli@ for playback and HDA Intel for microphone input when voice
chatting as I set them up through System-Preferences-Sound.
But some playback through build in HDA Inte doesn't workl - absolutely all
games I've ever tried: Sauerbraten, Worsow, Wormux, X-Moto, etc. Ekiga doesn't
work too, inspite of the fact I've set up alsa, then ESI for playback and HDA
Intel for input. Absolutely no sound.

PS When I was installing Ubuntu 8.10, I didn't turn off integrated card in the
bios, and it usually was the first device after reboot.
I've managed to reproduce similar behaviour with Ekiga at another computer: It
has ASUS Xonar DX and HDA Intel. I switched off integrated sound card when
installing and there were no such issues. But I can't use my Dr.Dac2 USB Audio

Re: [Bug 314019] Re: Toolbar appearance

2009-01-05 Thread Joe_Bishop
 * Is this reproducible?
Yes, of course. Just try to create a new note or edit old one.

 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
By default, icon text font in toolbar is the same as Desktop one (set up
through appearance-fonts). But I've customized it's size by adding
following lines into ~/.gtkrc-2.0:

style smaller-text {
  font_name = 8
}

widget_class *ToolButton* style smaller-text
widget_class *StatusBar* style smaller-text

seems it doesn't work with Status Bar, but works OK with Toolbar. The only
exception is Tomboy.

2009/1/5 Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Also, please answer these questions:
 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem and resolving
this bug. I don't get such issue in my installation.

Thank you very much Mr Milone

2008/12/6 lunch [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you very much Mr Milone I installed your packages for 177.82 and
it went beautifully .. the only thing is that it should tell you to
restart your computer after you install the deb but I guess installing
from deb is not exactly the way you should do it.

Also I have to say that 2D performance seems to be better if installing
from a deb than installing from a .run file ... I think Mr Milone did a
 few tweaks to improve this.

Once again thanks for your hard work Mr Milone.

It's not a reason - you always can roll back to the older driver in this
case ;)

The reason why I'm against them is because I had stability issues - screen
would sometimes flicker and whole computer just pause. However I installed
the driver via nvidia's own installer - so I'm waiting for a package to be
available in ubuntu for testing first.

Re: [Bug 304805] Re: Cannot access to a child archive when have closed the parent one

2008-12-03 Thread Joe_Bishop
Of course I noticed this in error message, but it shouldn't be so.

2008/12/4 Ilya B [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think this is how it should be. When you open the inner archive, it is
unpacked from the outer archive to a temporary location. When you close the
outer archive, everything is cleaned up, and the temporary inner archive
file is deleted. After that, you can't extract anything from it.
So this is actually expected behaviour.

Summing up, 173 and 177 don't work with Compiz
What?

2008/11/26 ma2412ma [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Summing up, 173 and 177 don't work with Compiz, so there's no official
way to enable the desktop effects on Intrepid if you own an Nvidia card.
Now they have released a new driver which happens to be labeled as beta,
but it fixes all major bugs that we're complaining about. Just add 180
to the driver list and leave 177 the recommended one. Once 180 goes
final, recommend this release in the list. If possible, this should be
done ASAP for the reasons mentioned above. Just my 2 cents.

[Bug 275070] [NEW] Latest ubuntu wallpapers is sooo ugly

2008-09-27 Thread Joe_Bishop
Public bug reported:

What idiot delete previous (hardy heron) wallpapers? I will never prefer
latest ugly balls wallpaper to the previous hardy one if I had choice.
But it is definitely that current ubuntu artwork team has no any taste
;)

But this fix broke antialiasing in gnome-terminal, see attached shots.
First was made in gvim, and the second in vim in terminal. I used Droid Sans
Mono 10 in both of them.
(This is just an example, I'm using Emacs with gray background and
difference is felt not so strong there :D )

This bug was fixed in the package fontconfig - 2.6.0-1ubuntu4

  * add debian/patches/06_ubuntu_lcddefault.patch: set lcddefault as
default for the lcd-filter now that Cairo prefers lcdlegacy. This
is needed to restore our previous behavior. Thanks to Sylvain Pasche.

Rendering in gnome-terminal doesn't seem me perfect.
Rendering in GVIM with slight hinting which I need.
But rendering in VIM similar to full or medium hinting.

Looks perfect to me, Joe. Can you explain the problem?

Re: [Bug 264254] Re: subpixel rendering in intrepid

2008-09-19 Thread Joe_Bishop
It is in the case when I have no ~/.fonts.conf. When I have it everything is
OK.
I suppose I shouldn't have any .fonts.conf file if I set up font settings
through Gnome gui.
Especially because in this case everything except of gnome-terminal, qt apps
and, of course, ugly sucking OO.org looks OK.

Re: [Bug 260588] Re: unmounting through nautilus

2008-09-18 Thread Joe_Bishop
Damn, I forgot to answer you.
You should have some valid iso file and mount it through
fuseiso -p iso image tmp - then it will be mounted to the folder tmp in
the current directory.
Unmounting through nautilus doesn't work for these mounted iso images.
