[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-19 Thread John T. Folden
Perhaps a better solution would be to disable the trigger on the first
50pixels (or whatever) of the left edge when a window is maximized. This
way the launcher would never be triggered when a user was actually
aiming for the left most toolbar button in a maximized window.

I don't believe we need a visual indicator when the launcher is hidden,
that seems to defeat the purpose and adds ugly screen clutter.

As far as alerts go, I seem to recall there was discussion that the icon
of the app needing attention would pop out from the left edge when the
launcher was hidden.

[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-09 Thread John T. Folden
Matt, throwing the mouse at the left edge, even with any necessary-but-
short delay is still less time/work for the user than the currently
inefficient method.

Also, having to resort to the keyboard to overcome this issue is not a
valid workaround, imo. A user should not have to resort to bandaids in
their workflow.

[Bug 754583] Re: UIFe: Launcher - update launcher reveal interaction to make it more accessible to first time users

2011-04-08 Thread John T. Folden
I think 'LEFT OF SCREEN' REVEAL is a boost to efficiency and will
greatly improve the desktop experience. If a user wants to open an app
via the launcher, they can aim directly for where that icon will be when
the launcher slides into view.

As it is now, a user must move the cursor to the top left of the screen
and then down to the desired icon. This requires unnecessary mouse
travel, particularly when the icon they're aiming for could be at the
other end of the screen.

Allowing app icons to 'pop out' when attention is needed is, also, a big
improvement over change of color in the BFB (given that provides
absolutely NO clue to which app needs the attention).

[Bug 73023] Re: Round orange emblems have lack usability

2006-12-23 Thread John T. Folden
Personally, I prefer the style of Jef's emblem icon set over the
current set to a rather sizable degree. They make use of an immediately
more recognizable image for each emblem and seem more integrated and
modern compared to other included graphics in the Distro.

Eric's 'colored' update is an improvement on the originals BUT many of
them are too simplistically stylized to properly indicate their meaning,
imo. For example. if I were not to read the descriptions beneath (and
when in use, keep in mind that these emblems don't have a text
description) the multimedia emblem looks like a ladder to me, the
Certified almost looks like a clock, the Package looks like a t-shirt,
and the art emblem draws to mind a flukeworm rather than a paint brush!
I would really be happy with a more photo-realistic direction in this
area.

I, also, think the circle behind the emblem tends to make the images
appear oversized. When combined with the object on which they are placed
it tends to create a rather unbalanced feeling, imo. Rather than using a
shape to tie them all together perhaps an overall 'color tint' could be
used to indicate their function instead.

John

[Bug 61341] Re: [Edgy] Missing progress bar indicator

2006-12-23 Thread John T. Folden
I have seen this exact issue in Edgy, as well, but it occurred when
using the default theme.

I installed Edgy on a system with an i815 onboard graphics chips. X was
set to a 24-bit display by default and the above issue was noted. After
reducing to a 16bit display the issue resolved itself.

I'm unclear on wether this would be considered a theme problem or an
X/driver bug.
