[Bug 906388] Re: updates should not remove software from computers without installing an equivalent replacement

2011-12-20 Thread John Wiersba
This was not handled well at all. I encountered exactly the problem
described in this bug report. I took the latest updates and lost the
java plugin that my one critical app depended on. Now I can no longer
run my critical app (Netilla) and am effectively dead in the water until
I can figure out the workaround by browsing around the net. BTW,
openjdk may be the future of java, but it's not the present. There are
many applications which fail with openjdk.

The right thing to do:
1) Warn the user, in a very in-your-face way, that you are about to downgrade
your capabilities if you accept this update.
2) Explain specifically what the choices are.
3) Offer to install replacement packages (e.g. openjdk) if the downgrade path
is taken.
4) Give the user an easy way to accept other updates but ignore this one, now
and in the future.

If this had been done, it would have taken me no time at all to keep my
working machine and accept the risks involved with whatever security
issues are inherent in the previously working version of java. Part of
the reason I use linux is that encounter maybe a couple orders of
magnitude less security problems out on the net than those using
windows. Also, I don't visit those sites which are likely to cause
problems in the first place. And additionally, I take advantage of
plugins like noscript which further limit my vulnerabilities. It would
have been a no-brainer to keep my working setup as opposed to walking
into the mess I'm currently in.

And finally, it would be wonderful to have some kind of checkpoint
capability which would allow me to accept an update, try it, and if
necessary reject it and revert to my previous configuration. This is
not the first time I have accepted an update only to find that it has
broken a working configuration, with no way that I can figure out to
back out of it.

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2009-06-22 Thread John Wiersba
Same problem for me on a Dell GX270 with DVD RW drive (NEC Optiarc ND-

install 8.10 from the alternate disk.

I cannot use the desktop installer because I want to configure LVM
inside LUKS. I am attempting to test a reinstall of 9.04 in an LUKS-LVM
system.

Here is the error I got after continuing after applying the workaround
mentioned above:

[Bug 323011] [NEW] edubuntu-artwork-usplash hangs during boot in 8.10 ubuntu

2009-01-29 Thread John Wiersba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: edubuntu-artwork-usplash

(May or may not be related to bug 318522
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/edubuntu-artwork/+bug/318522.
In my case I believe the package install completed successfully). See
also my posts at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1050686 and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1051327.

usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so in /boot/initrd.img* causes a fully
up-to-date 8.10 Ubuntu to hang at start of boot if edubuntu-artwork-
usplash has been installed, but works fine with standard artwork.

I have a LUKS encrypted LVM partition containing root. Boot hung before
asking for LUKS passphrase. Only difference between working files in
/boot and failing files was initrd.img-2.6.27-9-generic. Only
difference in the initrd.img archive was usr/lib/usplash/usplash-
artwork.so, which had been installed and symlinked after adding
edubuntu-artwork packages version 0.1.0-55ubuntu1 (intrepid).

I was able to fix by uninstalling the 2 edubuntu-artwork packages and running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r)

[Bug 188245] Re: F3 in bash running under gnome-terminal causes loop

2008-11-29 Thread John Wiersba
No, it appears to have gone away. I just did some more experimenting
and found an easy way to reproduce it in 7.10:

1) boot from CD (to get a fresh installation of 7.10)
2) add System Monitor to panel, in order to be able to see the 100% use of one
CPU
3) open a Terminal (Accessories->Terminal)
4) in the Terminal window, type: set -o vi
4) hit F3
5) watch the System Monitor to see that one CPU has just been maxed at 100%
6) hit Ctrl-C to return bash to normal behavior
7) notice that the System Monitor shows that usage has dropped back down

I booted from 8.04 and 8.10 and was not able to reproduce it with these
same instructions, so it looks like it's gone away. Maybe it's worth
reporting upstream to bash or fixing in 7.10?

Re: [Bug 194629] Re: Ubuntu OS crashes, apparently by just moving mouse

2008-08-14 Thread John Wiersba
Thanks, Chris. However, it looks like I can't manage the status of this
bug, even though I created it. It says, "You are not the bug assignee
nor the maintainer of Ubuntu, and therefore cannot edit this bug's
status."

I had previously tried to attach multiple files independently, but when
I selected a new file to upload, it appeared to replace the previous
file that I had attached. Do you mean that I can attach them to
separate comments or that I can attach them all to a single comment?

As a user of Ubuntu, I believe it is my obligation to report what I
consider as important bugs. Thank *you* for your work on fixing bugs!!

Subject: [Bug 194629] Re: Ubuntu OS crashes, apparently by just moving mouse

This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this
no longer being a problem. For future reference you can manage the
status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in the yellow
line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down box. You
can learn more about bug statuses at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status
.

Also, you can attach multiple files independently, but you have to
upload them one at a time. This is the preferred way of doing it as
opposed to uploading a single tar file.

Thank you again for taking the time to report this bug and helping to
make Ubuntu better. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find

[Bug 188245] Re: F3 in bash running under gnome-terminal causes loop

2008-08-01 Thread John Wiersba
Sorry, I didn't get your previous comment from 2008/6/24. But I got
this last email. I don't know how to reopen this bug report -- can you
do that or let me know how?

Yes, this still happens. It's hard for me to find a terminal window
where this doesn't occur. I start my terminal windows by calling
/usr/bin/gnome-terminal with a title (-t) and a geometry (--geometry).
I managed to get one terminal window into a state where it DID NOT
produce this behavior. I ran stty sane in both terminal windows (one
window which reproduces this behavior, one which doesn't). Then I ran
strace and captured what's going on when I press F3, followed by ctl-c.
I've attached the outputs. There are 4 attachments in one tar ball:

good_f3 (strace of F3 in the terminal which DOES NOT produce this behavior)
good_ctl_c (strace of ctl-c in the terminal which DOES NOT produce this
behavior)
good_f3_ctl_c (strace of F3 followed by ctl-c in the terminal which DOES NOT
produce this behavior)
bad_f3_ctl_c (strace of F3 followed by ctl-c in the terminal which DOES produce
this behavior)

Unfortunately, I don't know how I got the "good" terminal in the state
where it doesn't produce this behavior.

[Bug 146946] Re: [gutsy] Gnome settings daemon randomly does not work

2008-03-23 Thread John Wiersba
I just started getting this one, too. Yesterday and the day before, for
the first time ever, this occurred. After I'm automatically logged in,
I see an error dialog with:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
   correctly.

   The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the
reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log
in.

After I rebooted, I'm OK. I'm running a Dell Latitude d820 with NVIDIA
Quadro NVS 110M. From the Restricted Drivers application, the "NVIDIA
accelerated graphics driver (latest cards)" is in use. I running Gutsy
Gibbon with all packages up-to-date.

I've attached every /var/log file modified during the latest boot when
this occurred.

[Bug 124517] Re: nm-applet hangs without creating any gui window

2008-03-20 Thread John Wiersba
It still has the behavior described in my original report, even under
Hardy Heron. However, I think I now understand that this is its
intended behavior. Running nm-applet only adds the nm icon to the
notification area and does not terminate. If the nm icon is already
there, it still does not terminate but it also has no visible behavior.
Running nm-applet does not bring up any GUI windows, such as you would
get by selecting from the left- or right- mouse button lists of the nm-
applet notification icon, which is what I expected (a GUI application).
In other words, nm-applet is not a GUI program in the same sense as, say
firefox or openoffice.org or gnome-terminal.

[Bug 194629] [NEW] Ubuntu OS crashes, apparently by just moving mouse

2008-03-07 Thread John Wiersba
Public bug reported:

This is the second time I've gotten the "black screen of death". This
has never previously occurred prior to a day or two ago. I'm running a
standard, up-to-date Gutsy Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude D820.

Apparently the kernel is crashing. The symptoms:

I'm moving the mouse pointer on the screen, The mouse pointer and screen
freezes for a second or two, then everything shuts down as if I'd pulled
the plug (however this is a laptop). By which I mean that the screen
turns black and the hard disk spins down.

I rebooted without problems and captured all files in /var/log which
were changed since just before the crash, if you think any of them would
be of interest.

Can you suggest anything to do if this occurs again, so I can add to
this report

[Bug 194629] Re: Ubuntu OS crashes, apparently by just moving mouse

2008-03-07 Thread John Wiersba
I don't know how to attach multiple files, so I'm attaching a tgz of
syslog and Xorg.0.log.

When this occurred last night, I had just booted the laptop at Feb 22
23:00. It crashed within a few minutes and I rebooted and captured all
of /var (that had timestamps after 23:00). I'm running the NVIDIA
accelerated graphics driver (restricted driver). I boot and shutdown my
laptop at least once per day. I'm running almost exclusively off of A/C
power with a UPS.

Because this has now happened twice, I'm expecting that it will happen
again. If it does, is there anything I can do that will make it easier
to debug what's going on? I could boot off of a Live CD and capture
various files, if that would help, or I could turn on some kind of
(kernel?) debugging in advance to capture more information. Anything I
should be particularly aware of when this happens (so I can report it
better)?

I have been running Ubuntu for over a year now and this problem has just
occurred in the past few days. IIRC, the first time this happened, I
was moving the mouse, so maybe it's related to that?

Thanks for your help!

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-02-28 Thread John Wiersba
I just tried this and it worked. You could do the following:

mv unlock.x unlock.shc (use any name you want, but I'd use something more
meaningful than a .x extension)
chmod 500 unlock.shc

Now you should be able to call unlock.shc exactly the way you previously
called your unlock script, with the same results.

[Bug 188245] [NEW] F3 in bash running under gnome-terminal causes loop

2008-02-01 Thread John Wiersba
Public bug reported:

I'm running bash in a gnome-terminal under an up-to-date Gutsy. If I
press F3, bash goes into some sort of loop, taking up 100% of a CPU. I
can no longer type in the bash terminal, but I can use Ctrl-C to kill
the loop and return to normal text entry mode.

By playing around, I have discovered that if I press F2 before pressing
F3, then F3 will not cause this behavior. However if I run
/usr/X11R6/bin/clear, then pressing F3 will cause the hanging behavior
again.

I suppose this bug could be in bash or in gnome-terminal or in libvte9
(I see gnome-pty-helper running as a sibling to bash).

[Bug 181281] Re: Allow access to Keyring manager with no password

2008-01-23 Thread John Wiersba
Sebastien,

So what is the work around when using automatic login? Browsing various
forums, the best I've seen seems to require pam-keyring-tool which
doesn't appear to be in any ubuntu packages for gutsy, only for feisty.
Please advise what is the best workaround?

Thanks!

[Bug 124517] nm-applet hangs without creating any gui window

2007-07-06 Thread John Wiersba
Public bug reported:

I'm running the latest feisty. When I run nm-applet from the command
line, it just hangs without any errors and without creating any gui
windows -- I have no clue what it's doing or what it's waiting for. I
am able to run Network Monitor 2.12.1 from the notification area icon,
which creates one window entitlede "Connection Properties: eth1".

I've never been able to run nm-applet, so I don't know what it's
supposed to do, but it appears to be totally inoperative. The Network
Monitor gui only allows WEP, not WPA. Wireless with WEP works fine with
DHCP, but I don't seem to be able to even attempt to run WPA.

Please let me know what more information I can supply to resolve this.

[Bug 68744] Re: USB Harddrive displayed multiple times

2007-07-01 Thread John Wiersba
I want to clarify my earlier comments. This only happens *sometimes*
and only when the USB stick is inserted before booting or during the
boot process. If inserted after my laptop has already booted, then the
USB stick is detected and displayed properly as a single usbdisk icon.
I've never seen this happen except when the USB stick is inserted before
or during booting and even then it doesn't always happen (maybe 80% or
90% of the time?).

Can you please provide a set of step by step instructions on how to
reproduce this? What version of firefox are you using and what version
of ubuntu is this on?

[Bug 113070] Re: firefox download manager doesn't work when target is on vfat filesystem

2007-06-12 Thread John Wiersba
I have firefox configured to download to a directory named /ftp.

$ ls -l /ftp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Jun 12 23:48 /ftp -> /d/ftp
$ mount
...
/dev/sda5 on /d type vfat
(rw,utf8,umask=02,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,quiet,shortname=winnt)
$ ls -ld /d/ftp
drwxrwxr-x 5 jrw jrw 4096 Jun 12 23:51 /d/ftp
$ uname -a
Linux nalini 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

firefox->help->about
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20061201
Firefox/2.0.0.4 (Ubuntu-feisty)

visit http://directory.fsf.org/cpio.html
select link ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/cpio/cpio-2.8.tar.gz

$ ls -l /ftp/cpio*
06/12 23:56:45 $ ls -l cpio*
-rwxrwxr-x 1 jrw jrw 0 Jun 12 23:51 /ftp/cpio-2.8.tar.gz

So, the file is created but never populated and the download manager
window doesn't appear, either. However, when I changed /ftp to point to
an ext3 filesystem, the tar.gz file downloaded properly. When I created
/ftp as a directory (rather than as a symlink), it also downloaded
correctly -- obviously in this case /ftp was on an ext3 filesystem
rather than on a vfat filesystem. The same thing happened when I set
the download directory in Preferences to be on a vfat filesystem
(without a symlink).

Also, I noticed when downloading an attachment from my yahoo mail
account a strange anomaly when the file was a text file named "hah" (no
extension) -- yahoo said it was of type "BIN". The file downloaded
correctly but when the file system was vfat, the file was named
"hah.bin". When the download directory was on an ext3 filesystem, the
file was downloaded properly as "hah". I don't know if it's related
(probably not), but it's annoying.

Please let me know how I can help you debug this. Thanks!

[Bug 68744] Re: USB Harddrive displayed multiple times

2007-06-11 Thread John Wiersba
I am also experiencing something similar. If I boot my laptop with my
usb stick already inserted, then I sometimes end up with two "usbdisk"
icons on my desktop. I can eject one of them but not the other one. If
I wait until after it has booted, then things behave properly. I'm
running feisty with all patches applied (up to last night). My
/etc/fstab contains:

/dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk vfat
users,rw,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=02,iocharset=utf8,noauto

[Bug 83974] Re: webbrowser incorrectly handles quoted arguments for GNOME browser configuration

2007-05-08 Thread John Wiersba
I submitted bug #113063 and was told that it was a duplicate of this one
(#83974) and that it was fixed in feisty. However, I am running feisty
with all updates applied (upgraded from edgy) but this bug still occurs.

Here's a copy of what I submitted in that other bug report:

Choose "Help > Report" a bug from firefox. After a few seconds, this
pops up:

title: Problem loading page - Mozilla Firefox
text: File not found
Firefox can't find the file at

/home/jrw/"https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+filebug/jQZxWlghNh5hoDa0sWkYpl9JP1m?";;.

I don't know what it's trying to do exactly, but this is an invalid
filename.

Thank you!

Hi, Hilario. Thanks for replying. However, I'm running feisty with all
updates applied and I still have this bug.

I don't know if I'm supposed to add something back into the bug report
to indicate this or if just replying to you (and to the "bug number" is
sufficient. Let me know if you want me to update the bug report. BTW,
I didn't see any place in the bug report for me to indicate which
version of ubuntu I'm running. Did I miss it?

[Bug 113070] firefox download manager doesn't work when target is on vfat filesystem

2007-05-07 Thread John Wiersba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

My download location was set (via a symlink) to a directory on a vfat
filesystem. The /etc/fstab entry for this filesystem is:
   /dev/sda5 /d vfat
defaults,utf8,umask=02,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,quiet,shortname=winnt 0 0

When selecting a file such as xxx.tar.gz from a web page, I get the
download manager popup. When I choose the Save to Disk option, all that
happens is that a 0 byte file is created at the target location -- no
download status, etc. I'm guessing that maybe download manager is
trying to manipulate file permissions in a way that is not supported on
the vfat file system? When I change the download location to a ext3
filesystem then everything works.
