[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1890913] Re: init is using 100% of processor

2020-09-11 Thread John C.
I am experiencing this same problem and I can confirm that when I mask the
apport-autoreport.service the problem stops.

I am on Ubuntu 20.10 with Kernel 5.8.0-18-generic. I also have Ubuntu 20.04
with Kernel 5.8.0-05-generic and
can confirm the problem does not happen there

[Bug 1735700] Re: Suggestion to suspend on lid close by default

2018-02-09 Thread John C Fowler
Personally... There should be an option for the laptop lid to be closed
when docked. I have Dell with two HDMI monitors attached to my docking
station. Since 17.10 upgrade, I have to run with the laptop lid open.
Should I power up with the lid closed, I see the boot sequence on
Monitor one until LXE Window Mgr starts, then the screen blanks. Xfce-
power-manager options for "Plugged in" should be "Switch off (Laptop
Screen Only)", "Suspend", "Lock Screen". It appears that "Switch off
Display" shuts down the Docking Station Video Ports as well.

@oddid I can confirm installing only `fonts-ipaexfont-mincho` fixes the
problem and reduces the footprint needed to fix this issue. Thanks!

[Bug 748615] Re: Login fails on Webmin

2011-04-30 Thread John c
Solved same issue with Mythbuntu 11.04 - The default webmin user was root, with
an unknown password. This did not match my username and password set during
install!
Ran this script to set it;
sudo /usr/share/webmin/changepass.pl /etc/webmin root your-password
Once in to the web, I added a new webmin user, to match my logon name. Hope
this helps someone get it fixed!

[Bug 377967] Re: Incorrect(?) USB Id in the database: 1941:8021 Watson W-8681

2011-03-26 Thread John C Barstow
This USB id is also used by the USB drum kit sold by ThinkGeek, which
also handles everything via client software.

I suspect that it's actually a generic serial-to-USB converter; that
would explain why it shows up in such diverse products and also why
these products require specific client software to drive them.

[Bug 662109] bug 662109

2010-10-18 Thread John C Howe
Hi, Firstly I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit version) with a 'Athlon AMD
64 Processor. I am using the Avant window Navigator. When I try to
access the 'Downloads folder via, Main menu/Places/downloads, I get The
Appearances Menu box with the Error message There was an error
Installing selected file. Downloads does not appear to be a valid
Theme I seem to have got over the immediate problem by accessing Avant
Applet 'FILE BROWSER LAUNCHER' preferences. and unchecking 'system
Default' and checking 'Nautilus'. But the problem still exists when
trying to access 'places' menu in main menu. I hope this is a clearer
explanation, than my previous attempt. My Apologies for that.

[Bug 580305] Re: Version of hid-quanta in Lucid kernel is broken

2010-05-18 Thread John C Barstow
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

The hid-quanta driver backported from 2.6.34 into the Lucid kernel is
slightly dated and missing a bug fix needed for the driver to actually
generate events (at least with my model of the touchscreen)

Actually it's slightly more complicated - the /dev/hidraw* device
responds to touches, but the /dev/usb/hiddev* device does not, and udev
does not create a corresponding /dev/input/event* device.

- The version in 2.6.34-rc7 includes this fix (verified by installing from
- the mainline PPA).

[Bug 580305] Re: Version of hid-quanta in Lucid kernel is broken

2010-05-18 Thread John C Barstow
As mentioned in the bug report, this piece of hardware works correctly
with the 2.6.34 mainline, it's simply that the backport grabbed an early
version of the driver which fails to produce input events.

[Bug 580305] [NEW] Version of hid-quanta in Lucid kernel is broken

2010-05-13 Thread John C Barstow
Public bug reported:

The hid-quanta driver backported from 2.6.34 into the Lucid kernel is
slightly dated and missing a bug fix needed for the driver to actually
generate events (at least with my model of the touchscreen)

Actually it's slightly more complicated - the /dev/hidraw* device
responds to touches, but the /dev/usb/hiddev* device does not, and udev
does not create a corresponding /dev/input/event* device.

The version in 2.6.34-rc7 includes this fix (verified by installing from
the mainline PPA).

[Bug 437526] [NEW] OpenGL applications with shaders turned on have severe performance issues

2009-09-27 Thread John C Barstow
Public bug reported:

I first noticed this under wine, but have reproduced it with several
Linux-native games including Yo Frankie! and Cube 2.

When shaders are disabled, I see normal performance. When shaders are
enabled, however, I get very jerky performance; essentially one-two
seconds of normal performance alternating with a freeze of at least 0.5
second.

This is a regression from Jaunty.

[Bug 358430] [NEW] updates to the kernel fail to update menu.lst

2009-04-09 Thread John C Hatch
Public bug reported:

The last two updates to the kernel installed correctly but did not show
up when I booted until I manually edited /boot/grub/menu.lst. I don't
know if the fault lies with grub or synaptic or with my installation
which is kubuntu h. h. upgraded to jaunty and with a lot of extra stuff
installed.

Not a huge problem, probably, but confusing for new users.

2008-10-23 Thread John C Barstow
OK, I've done a little more investigation to see how the crash is
triggered.

1) Create a new menu.
2) Drag a shortcut from the desktop into the new menu.

Crash!

But...
1) Create a new folder.
2) Drag a shortcut from the desktop to a previously existing menu.
3) Drag the shortcut from the existing menu to the new menu.

No crash!

Re: [Bug 58503] Re: No response to keyboard input at prompt afterejecting CD-ROM

2008-03-14 Thread John C Lord
Regarding the reported bug, and the exact wording:
Installation process seems to complete successfully. When rebooting, the
process hangs after ejecting the CDROM. Here is the last line output to the
console:

mount: Function not implemented
Please remove the disc, close the tray (if any) and press ENTER:

At that point, pressing on the ENTER key doesn't do anything and a hard
reset is necessary. After the reset, Ubuntu seems to boot fine with the
newly installed system.

By the way, this bug is also reproducible by simply loading the live CD
and rebooting without installing. The process hangs after ejecting the
CDROM.

My experiences:
In the first instance (install, then reboot), when I did it, the system shut
down to the point where the installation had completed successfully and the
system had finished closing all the processes being run from the LiveCD and
ejected the CD and issued the last message on the screen for me to remove the
CD and press Enter. I'd remove the CD and press enter and the PC preceded to
finish rebooting back up exactly as I expected it to. My keyboard DID respond
to the Enter key after the CD had ejected.

While attempting to reproduce the problem by loading (i.e - booting
from) the live CD (not the hard drive) and rebooting without installing,
here's what happened: I clicked the red STOP button and then
selected Restart from the offered choices. The system shut down to the
last bit of progress bar, ejected the Live CD (from which I had booted),
and issued the message:

Please remove the disc, close the tray (if any) and press ENTER to
continue.

I removed the CD, closed the tray, and (maybe this is critical?) waited
until the CD drive light quit blinking and went out, then I pressed
ENTER and the PC went on to finish rebooting (this time from the hard
drive.) Again, I had no problems with this.

My hard drive has Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 installed with all updates
current up to March 2008 (although I never booted from it for these
tests), and the Live CD I booted from was the original normal release of
7.10 that came out last October 2007 (18th?19th?) - NOT a pre-release.

Hope this helps. Sorry about the other email. I'll try to keep
answers strictly relevant next time

John C Lord

Redding, CA, USA

p.s. I also had no problems when I tried to reproduce the problem using an Edgy
6.10 Live CD.
By the way, I have a PS2 style keyboard. Could the people with the problem
maybe have been using USB connected keyboards?
Also, I only tested this with my desktop PC, not my laptop.

John C Lord : Thanks for your fast answer, but you spoke about another
problem (yes the Hard Drive problem is really a BIOS/Motherboard problem
:)). Concerning this bug report which is about the keyboard that is not
working to eject the LiveCD once the system is installed, can you
confirm if it still happens to you when you you exit the ubuntu LiveCD ?

Re: [Bug 58503] Re: No response to keyboard input at prompt afterejecting CD-ROM

2008-03-12 Thread John C Lord
In my case, I believe the problem is that my motherboard is so old (a
FIC-6110), that although Ubuntu sees it as ACPI compatible, it really isn't.
Other problems I've had are probably also due to this old motherboard, which I
plan to replace.
The Motherboard's BIOS has other problems in that, even with LBA turned on, it
cannot handle drives larger than about 120gb, no matter what settings I put in
for hard drive characteristics. Apparently, this MOBO BIOS cannot handle
the number of clusters (using LBA) on drives larger than about 120-130GB.
My workaround for my 320GB drive, was to partition it split into 30GB and 290GB
and set the BIOS up as though for a 30GB drive and install Ubuntu, and later
move the /home folder to the 290GB partition and say the heck with it - it
works now. Once the system is booted up using the 30GB partition, the OS
(Ubuntu) can handle the 290GB partition where the /home folder is, and seems to
be having no problems now. I'm up to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 now.

Thanks for asking.

John C Lord

Thanks for your contribution to this bug report. I see that the last
release on which that bug could be reproduced is Feisty. Can someone
reproduce that issue with latest Hardy / Gutsy release? In my case,
using AMD64 release, I can't reproduce this bug with Gutsy or Hardy so I
suspect that this bug is not fixed.

[Bug 138995] python-numpy incorrectly depends directly on python2.4 and python2.5

2007-09-11 Thread John C Barstow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-numpy

Version: 1:1.0.3-1ubuntu2

Depends: python2.4, python2.5, python-central (= 0.5.8), python (
2.6), python (= 2.4), atlas3-base | lapack3 | liblapack.so.3,
atlas3-base | refblas3 | libblas.so.3, libc6 (= 2.6), libg2c0 (=
1:3.4.4-5), libgcc1 (= 1:4.2-20070516), python-numpy-dev (=
1:1.0.3-1ubuntu2)

Because python-numpy already uses python-central AND depends on
python=2.4,2.6, it's counter-productive to require both versions to
be installed.

Removing the dependencies on python2.4 and python2.5 would allow either
version of python to be installed, instead of requiring both.

[Bug 106631] Re: Ubiquity hangs while starting up manual partitioner (GUI Error)

2007-04-16 Thread John C Hatch
I have gotten the same error while trying to install Feisty Fawn Beta
i386. I have made two separate downloads, burned two cds and checked
mdsums. I got an error message saying that ubiquity had crashed and
tryed twice to send a bug report from wthin the installation desktop but
I have no way of knowing if they got through. I have been able to
install and use the beta kubuntu feisty fawn but I haven't been able to
get past this point installing this beta nor was I able to save anything
in the way of documentation. I wondered if the program is confused by
the number of versions of Linux installed on these drives.

[Bug 58503] Re: No response to keyboard input at prompt after ejecting CD-ROM

2006-11-01 Thread John C Lord
I have similar problems with a an older desktop PC using all of the desktop
Edgy 6.10 versions of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Edubuntu, in that the PC does not
shut down or restart as it should. The drives power off, but the monitor
display stays on and still shows the logo, so the PC has obviously not
completely shutdown. This is easily reproducible on my PC with all three Edgy
Live CD's by simply booting up with the Live CD and telling it to shutdown
(completely turn off the computer.) It simply won't shutdown completely.
NOTE: Ubuntu 6.06 LTS worked correctly in this respect and could shutdown or
restart the PC when it was supposed to. I suspect this will turn out to be
something very basic in changes made to power management. It is also probably
the reason why the systems appear to hang when during installations when the
PC gets to the now remove the CD and press Return to continue step. The PC
is probably unable to continue its shutdown to restart due to the misbehaving
power management. Do we need to be SU to shutdown our systems now?
Next: I plan to test various shutdown commands in terminal mode while SU. If
that doesn't work, I will RTFM (read the fine manual) to see what I can learn
about power management settings to see if this is something I can reconfigure.
Meanwhile, holding my power-off button 5 seconds still works. :)

[Bug 63532] Regression: ACPI broken on Asus A6Km (AMD64)

2006-10-02 Thread John C Barstow
Public bug reported:

No problems with 2.6.17-7-generic kernel at all.

Upgrading to 2.6.17-10-generic produces a large cascade of errors that
appear to be caused by failing ACPI support. The relevant dmesg lines:

powernow-k8: Found 2 AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors (version 1.60.2)
ACPI: Invalid package argument
ACPI Exception (acpi-processor-0275): AE_BAD_PARAMETER, Invalid _PSS data
[20060707]
powernow-k8: 0 : fid 0x0 (800MHz), vid 0x16 (1000 mV)

Probable symptoms include hanging on shutdown, HAL hanging during
startup (does not respond to any signals; GNOME crashes on startup
claiming HAL not initialized)

If it's any help I have a Turion MT32 processor.
