[Bug 1010466] Re: dropdown boxes on sites stop working

2012-06-13 Thread Jon Anderson
Could somebody tell me a little about the release process and timing?
When will this fix get released?

I'm very affected by this and other unity-2d bugs. I see that this has
been marked for 5.14, and other fixes I'm waiting on marked for 5.12.1.
When will these get to Precise? I'm getting scared that it means no
time soon.

[Bug 912729] Re: [Unity-2D] Alt+tilde does not work

2012-05-09 Thread Jon Anderson
For me the keys are working. The issue is that it does not cycle through
all of the windows. Only the previous window is available. If you have
more than two windows opens they will have an icon in the popup, but you
can not get to them. You can only cycle between window #1 and #2.

Even worse, when cycling back to window #1, it is not outlined, and the
popup dissapears. It is very confusing. It sort of makes sense in that
you are back to an unchanged state, but that is not what Alt-tab does.
Alt-tab will outline window #1 and leave the popup until the Alt key is
released, so I expected Alt-` to do the same.

[Bug 298601] Re: Firefox cannot start: Cannot mix incompatible Qt libraries

2009-02-10 Thread Jon Anderson
Are you running KDE nightlies? I had this error because the nightly KDE
messed up my Qt config. To fix this, you need to (re)move your
Trolltech.conf file so a new one can be built, like the KDE bug report
says:

$ mv ~/.config/Trolltech.conf ~/Desktop/Trolltech-broken.conf

Then run your Qt application. If you want to see what happened:

$ diff ~/Desktop/Trolltech-broken.conf ~/.config/Trolltech.conf

2008-03-18 Thread Jon Anderson
Suspend/resume also works for me now, on Hardy, with default Ubuntu

Since so many people have this working on Hardy, it seems as though the

[Bug 202814] Re: Resume from standby works with pm-suspend but not with standard ubuntu/gnome actions (with fglrx-driver from restricted modules)

2008-03-18 Thread Jon Anderson
I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.
pm-supend works fine, but the KDE guidance-power-manager suspend
doesn't.

I've attached a patch file which gets rid of HAL quirks for me (lshal |
grep quirk shows power_management.quirk.none = true), but KDE's suspend
still doesn't work. Perhaps KDE uses something other than HAL for
suspend?

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

I'm using Catalyst 8.01 with Ubuntu 7.10 and a Mobility Radeon X1400.

Suspend/resume works when the fglrx module is loaded (previously it
didn't).

Switching to an FGLRX VT, whether it's the only X session or not, locks
my machine up hard. I can't even change to a text VT and shut down that
way.

Any suggestions?

Now that screen locking works, I'm running KDE4 as my default desktop
environment. One of the main things that I miss from KDE3 is my desktop
switching shortcuts.

KDE4 has Ctrl+F1 through Ctrl+F4 hardcoded, so there is no shortcut to
switch to desktop 5 or 6 (I like to use 6 desktops). Also, there is no
switch to next desktop shortcut, as there was in KDE3.

If these shortcuts were added, they would greatly increase KDE4's
usability.

[Bug 183817] FGLRX+AIGLX+KDE4: Bizarre Distortion

2008-01-17 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde4

When using recent FGLRX with AIGLX, KDE4 shows bizarre distortion, as
shown in the attached screenshot. Mousing over buttons causes them to
jump around; when I go to click on a button, I find that another
button's image is superimposed over it, so it looks like I'm clicking
the wrong one (though I'm not).

FGLRX+AIGLX works fine with KDE3 + Compiz, and KDE4 works with the 2D
RadeonHD driver.

[Bug 181078] Kontact Distribution Lists MIA

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaddressbook

On some recent upgrade (could've been Dapper - Edgy, Edgy - Feisty or
Feisty - Gutsy), the Distribution Lists panel disappeared from

I used to have a panel at the bottom of the KAddressBook screen that
listed my DLs, which I could edit, but now it's gone. For that matter,

[Bug 176251] Can't Import VeriSign Root CA Certificate

2007-12-13 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gpgsm

After a LOT of hunting around, I figured out why I can't use my VeriSign
Digital ID to do S/MIME with KMail.

When I try to import VeriSign's PCA1ss_v4.509 (downloaded from
http://www.verisign.com/support/roots.html) with gpgsm, I get these
messages:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop/VeriSign_Roots$ gpgsm --import PCA1ss_v4.509
gpgsm: unknown hash algorithm `1.2.840.113549.1.1.2'
gpgsm: (this is the MD2 algorithm)
gpgsm: self-signed certificate has a BAD signature: General error
gpgsm: basic certificate checks failed - not imported
gpgsm: total number processed: 1
gpgsm: not imported: 1
secmem usage: 0/16384 bytes in 0 blocks

gpgsm doesn't like MD2 for some reason, so Kleopatra doesn't see a valid
certificate chain for my personal cert, so I can't use it for S/MIME.

On a related note, Kleopatra should say something about this error,
rather than waiting for me to sign something in KMail and then saying
General error... but I guess that's a different bug.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-12-11 Thread Jon Anderson
David: is your 3D acceleration working?

I tried the latest FGLRX with Gutsy, and /var/log/Xorg.log.0 said that
it couldn't load DRI because it requires a more recent version of the X
server. If DRI doesn't load, then perhaps suspend/resume might work, but
you might as well be using RadeonHD if there's no 3D acceleration.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-27 Thread Jon Anderson
I've installed the kernel modules and suspend/hibernate does not resume
here when POST_VIDEO=false.

Nope, resuming doesn't work for me, either (Bug #84991 is still an issue
for me, no matter what's in my /etc/default/acpi-support file). The
important thing for the purposes of this bug is that suspend works with
a SLAB allocator.

As for actually resuming... sorry, I'm in the same boat as you.
Suspend/resume used to work back in Edgy; I'm seriously tempted to go
back just for working suspend and resume.

Right now I choose between eye candy (FGLRX + Compiz) or working
suspend/resume (RadeonHD); I'm currently in eye candy mode, but who
knows what tomorrow will bring?

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-26 Thread Jon Anderson
Are you all sure that recompiling with SLAB will actually help?

Yes. I compiled my own kernel, exactly like Ubuntu's except for SLAB
being enabled instead of SLUB, and now the machine suspends properly. It
doesn't wake up properly, but that's another, older bug (Bug #84991).

I installed this version of the driver and now my windows move very,
very slowly. My X is basically fubar'd with the ati driver. How can I
remove it and go back to the less busted version that came with Gutsy?

Make sure that you put Option TexturedVideo on in the ServerFlags
section of your xorg.conf. This changed my AIGLX performance radically.

X works nicely for me in Gutsy on my T60 [with the vesa driver]

Yup... this bug only applies to suspending with the FGLRX driver. My
machine suspends (using hibernate-ram) with the new RadeonHD driver,
whether I have SLAB or SLUB. When the FGLRX kernel module is loaded,
however, it only suspends if I use a kernel with SLAB allocation.

[Bug 94161] Re: Shutdown problem in Dell Inspiron E1505

2007-09-06 Thread Jon Anderson
I followed the procedure at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend... I now have a bunch of
/var/log files that show being edited in AD 1916, but there's also
something that looks useful:

[2.032000] Magic number: 7:951:842
[2.032000] hash matches device ptyu8
[2.032000] hash matches device ptyrb

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend says that I should rmmod
the second driver (ptyrb), but lsmod | grep pty shows absolutely
nothing.

I'll try suspend/resume with ptyrb in /etc/default/acpi-support's
MODULES list.

Is there anything else I can do that might help?

[Bug 94161] Re: Shutdown problem in Dell Inspiron E1505

2007-09-05 Thread Jon Anderson
My problem sounds a lot like this one. I also have an Inspiron
6400/E1505.

My video card is a Mobility Radeon X1400 (open-source Avivo driver), but
since I have the same problem at the command line and the original
reporter has Intel graphics, I'm gonna guess this is some kind of BIOS
issue.

[Bug 94161] Re: Shutdown problem in Dell Inspiron E1505

2007-09-05 Thread Jon Anderson
More information!

The following methods give me a perfect suspend+resume cycle:

sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force
sudo /usr/sbin/hibernate-ram (after killing ipw daemon)
sudo pmi action suspend

Note that I've installed the hibernate package manually while
diagnosing the issue.

The following methods have problems:

Suspend in KDE Logout Dialog
Suspends OK, resumes to a blank screen. I can switch to a VT (blind), login and
sudo reboot (also blind; not even the VTs come back from suspend). The screen
comes back to life when I hit the shutdown usplash.

/usr/lib/hal/scripts/hal-system-power-suspend
I get an error message:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.UnknownError
No back-end for your operating system

/usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux
Script seems to hang; after 30s or so I Ctrl+C'd it with no problem.

sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
Script returns immediately; no error messages get printed.

It's my understanding that all of these roads should lead to Rome (a good
suspend+resume cycle), but there are clearly big differences. The really
troubling bit is that my screen is dead when I come back from a KDE-initiated
suspend.

I use kpowersave... is this a problem? I can try the guidance power
manager (as well as echo mem /sys/power/state)...

Even more info!

kde-guidance-powermanager's Suspend feature and the raw sysfs suspend
(echo mem /sys/power/state) both result in behaviour that's very
much like the KDE Logout dialog's Suspend; the only difference is that
the screen remains dark until reboot (not even the shutdown splash
screen shows up).

[Bug 136878] Re: 00xserver-xgl_start-server Should Be Optional

2007-09-03 Thread Jon Anderson
I had xserver-xgl installed from the dark days before Avivo, when I had
to run the binary ATI driver.

I still keep it around when I want to see the current state of bling
on the Linux desktop... not a very important reason, sure, but Jarmo's
statistics indicate that I may not be alone.

I'm not an expert, but I know my way around the command line. For
somebody a little fresher (who might still install Xgl because somebody
in a Compiz forum told them they needed it), figuring a problem like
this out could be thorny.

I handle Xgl in /usr/share/xsessions (but then I need separate .desktop
files for KDE and GNOME with Xgl).

Anything else I can share?

[Bug 136878] 00xserver-xgl_start-server Should Be Optional

2007-09-02 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xgl

Recent versions of the xserver-xgl package install a file
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/00xserver-xgl_start-server. This file starts Xgl for
regular X sessions, which totally breaks performance when using non-
accelerated drivers (like Avivo).

This behaviour should really be optional, perhaps reconfigurable through
dpkg-reconfigure.

I post this bug because it took me quite awhile to hunt down the reason
that my Avivo performance died between two days ago and yesterday. I
don't think that such a major change shouldn't happen in such a non-
obvious way.

[Bug 135715] X Should Use Logrotate

2007-08-29 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Wishlist item!

Sometimes, especially when crashes/reboots are involved, two log files
(/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old) just ain't enough.

[Bug 66573] Re: nspluginviewer hangs up whole X server

2007-08-25 Thread Jon Anderson
I can confirm that libgtk2.0-0_2.10.11-0ubuntu3_i386.deb (from Feisty)
fixes the problem:

bin/download.pl?arch=i386file=pool%2Fmain%2Fg%2Fgtk%2B2.0%2Flibgtk2.0-0_2.10.11-0ubuntu3_i386.debmd5sum=a2ddb5a26e3b5122772fde8a85b24339arch=i386type=main

Before installing that .deb, opening youtube in Konqueror caused 100%
CPU usage. Post-install, I can use youtube (as well as *every* site that
uses Flash... a lot) again.

[Bug 133853] Automatically reclaim swapped pages when there is free memory

2007-08-21 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Sometimes a runaway process will eat up huge amounts of memory, forcing
memory pages to be shipped out to the swap partition.

When I kill said process, I might be left with 800MB of free memory and
300MB of swapped pages. I am going to use these pages at some point
(many belong to the WM, browser windows in the background, etc), but
reclaiming them Just-In-Time makes the desktop feel sluggish.

I sometimes do sudo swapoff -a sudo swapon -a to clean up the mess,

[Bug 131943] Re: When using mplayer, vlc, kmplayer in 7.10 Gusty Gibbon with ATI card fglrx, xv overlay, the video appears Shaky

2007-08-16 Thread Jon Anderson
Can you run the command xine-check? I have all kinds of problems with
Xvideo these days, too...

[Bug 132935] Xv Supports YV12; X Server Does Not

2007-08-16 Thread Jon Anderson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libxine1

When running xine-check, I get this error message:

[ good ] found xvinfo: X-Video Extension version 2.2
[ good ] your Xv extension supports YV12 overlays (improves MPEG performance)
[ hint ] Your X server doesn't support YV12 overlays.
That means xine will have to do color space transformation and scaling
in software, which is quite CPU intensive. Maybe upgrading your
 X server will help here.
If you have an ATI card, you'll find accelerated X servers on
 http://www.linuxvideo.org/gatos/
 press enter to continue...

Does this have to do with my video driver (fglrx)?

** Affects: xine-lib (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 130696] Re: xine and totem-xine crashes with the fglrx driver

2007-08-16 Thread Jon Anderson
I can confirm this.

Running xine-check gives an odd error message, as well:

[ good ] found xvinfo: X-Video Extension version 2.2
[ good ] your Xv extension supports YV12 overlays (improves MPEG performance)
[ hint ] Your X server doesn't support YV12 overlays.

[Bug 74691] Re: Unable to debug under 2.6.22 on i386: Failed to read a valid object file image from memory

2007-08-07 Thread Jon Anderson
I respectfully submit that on OS which doesn't let developers debug is
not a very useful OS.

If the choice is between breaking ABI (while two months away from 7.10)
and breaking the most basic of functionality for an entire Ubuntu
release, well, I should hope that the choice would be obvious.

If the ABI is deemed more important, perhaps the default kernel
arguments in GRUB could at least be modified to include vdso=0 (while
recognizing that this is a workaround, not a fix)?
